Use the control that matches your goal: remove the location from an existing item in your photo library, switch off location for one outgoing share, or disable camera geotagging for future pictures. Those are separate actions. A share setting does not necessarily rewrite your library original, and turning off camera access does not clean older files.
On iPhone or iPad, Photos can remove an existing location with Adjust Info > Adjust Location > No Location, while the Share Sheet can omit location for a particular send. On Mac, Photos uses Image > Location > Hide Location. Android camera labels vary, but the setting is usually called Save location, Location tags, Geo-tag photos, or a similar name. Google Photos requires an extra distinction: estimated or manually added locations can be edited there, but a location written by the camera may remain in the downloaded original.
First decide which location you are trying to remove
A photograph can carry more than one kind of place information. The camera may write GPS coordinates into the image file when it captures the picture. A photo service may let you add a place manually, or estimate one from landmarks and other images. A sharing feature may hide location in its own viewing experience without changing the underlying file. Treating all three as the same problem leads to accidental exposure or a false sense of security.

Before sending, identify the destination. A private album inside a photo service, a message attachment, an email, and a downloaded file uploaded to another site do not necessarily use the same metadata path. If you need the strongest practical protection, remove or exclude the location at the source and then check the exact copy you plan to send.

Remove location from an existing photo on iPhone or iPad
Apple’s Photos privacy guidance, published in September 2026, provides a direct control for an existing library item. It applies to a photo or video selected in Photos.
- Open Photos and select the picture or video.
- Tap More (the menu button).
- Choose Adjust Info.
- Tap Adjust Location.
- Select No Location.
Apple describes the result this way: “You can remove location information from any photo or video by tapping More on the photo or video, then tapping Adjust Location > No Location.” This changes the item in that Photos library. It is the appropriate control when you want the library record itself to stop carrying the location association, rather than merely changing one share.
Check the result in Photos
Open the item’s information view after applying No Location. The former place should no longer be shown as the photo’s location in Photos. If you have multiple copies of the picture, repeat the operation for each library item; changing one copy does not automatically clean a duplicate stored elsewhere.

This action is different from turning off Location Services for the camera. It also does not remove visual clues in the scene, such as a readable street sign or a recognizable house. If you later send a separate untouched copy from another app or device, that copy may still contain its own metadata.
Share an iPhone or iPad photo without location
When the immediate need is a single outgoing share, use the Share Sheet’s location switch. This is useful when you want to preserve place-based organization in your library but do not want the recipient to receive the location with this send.
- In Photos, select one or more pictures.
- Tap the Share button.
- Tap Options at the top of the Share Sheet.
- Turn Location off.
- Return to the Share Sheet and choose the destination.
Apple indicates that Location Not Included appears above Options before you complete the share. That label confirms the setting for the outgoing share. It should not be read as proof that the original item in your library has been rewritten. If you need the original cleaned as well, use Adjust Info > Adjust Location > No Location separately.

Use the share control for the correct copy
Apply the switch every time the privacy requirement applies. Selecting a different photo later, sharing from another app, or attaching a file that was previously exported can create a new path with different behavior. The safest routine is to select the final set in Photos, confirm Location Not Included, and then send that selection directly.
Stop future iPhone or iPad camera geotagging
To prevent new camera captures from collecting location, remove the Camera app’s Location Services access. Apple gives this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Location Services.
- Choose Camera.
- Select Never.
This is a prospective setting. It prevents future camera location collection; it does not remove GPS data already embedded in pictures you took earlier. Clean older items with Photos, and use the Share Sheet option when you need to omit location only from a particular send.
Trade-off: map and trip features
Location data powers map-based browsing and other place-oriented organization. Removing it or preventing its collection can reduce the information available for location searches, map views, or trip memories. Decide whether you want those conveniences for your private library before disabling collection everywhere.
Hide a location in Photos on a Mac
Apple Photos on Mac uses a different menu command from iPhone and iPad. The documented workflow is for items stored in the Mac Photos library.

- Open Photos on the Mac.
- Select the pictures whose location should no longer be shown.
- Choose Image from the menu bar.
- Choose Location, then Hide Location.
Photos also provides location review through the Places album and an item’s information view. Use those views to identify pictures that still show a place before you share them. The Mac command is a library-level action; it is not a general Windows file-cleanup procedure, and it does not establish what another application will do with an exported copy.

When a Mac library contains several versions
Look for edited, duplicated, or separately imported versions rather than assuming one command covers every file on every disk. If you export a separate original after hiding a library location, treat that exported file as its own privacy decision and verify it before uploading it elsewhere.
Stop future location tags on Android phones
Android camera controls are manufacturer-specific. Open the camera app, enter its settings, and disable the option that saves a capture location. Google documents these common labels:

The exact menu path and wording depend on the phone model and software version. If you cannot find one of these labels, search the camera settings for location, GPS, geo-tag, or save location.
Use Android’s permission control when necessary
You can also deny an app access to location through Settings > App info > Permissions > Location. This controls whether that app can access location going forward. It is not a metadata eraser and should not be described as removing location already written into a file. For camera captures, the camera’s own location toggle is the clearest control to check first.
Existing Android photos need a separate operation
Turning off the camera option does not clean your existing gallery. Review those images in the photo app or service where they are stored, and use that product’s documented location-removal or share-without-location control. If the app offers no reliable control for the file you need to send, do not assume that a normal share strips GPS data.

- The camera saved the location when the picture was taken.
- You added a location manually.
- Google Photos estimated a location from landmarks and other photos.
Those sources matter because they do not have identical editing controls. Google Photos lets you edit or remove estimated locations and locations you added manually. Its Android help says a location added by the camera cannot be updated or removed in Google Photos.

Remove an estimated or manually added location
When the location is service-generated or manually entered, use the photo’s location editing control in Google Photos and remove or correct that place. The exact buttons can vary by platform and app version, so read the label that identifies whether the value is estimated or added. Do not apply the same expectation to a camera-written GPS value.
Control location in a shared Google Photos album
Google says locations are private by default in new albums, links, conversations, and other sharing contexts, with partner sharing as an exception. For a shared album, open that album’s Share controls, choose Options, and review the location setting before inviting or sending the link. This controls location visibility in that Google Photos sharing context.
Why downloading can reintroduce the original location
Google warns that downloading and sharing a photo outside Google Photos does not apply edits made in Google Photos to the original location saved by the device. In practical terms, a location hidden or changed in the service can still be present in the camera-original file you download and upload elsewhere. If the destination is email, a messaging attachment, a work portal, or another website, treat the downloaded file as a new handoff and use a workflow that removes or excludes its location before that upload.
Partner sharing is a distinct exception
Do not infer that the default privacy behavior for a new album or link also describes partner sharing. Review the partner-sharing setting separately whenever that feature is involved.

Check the picture and the scene before you send it
Metadata is only one way a photo can reveal a place. Google warns that viewers may infer location from landmarks. A house number, street sign, transit stop, business name, distinctive mountain, or an unusual view can identify a location even when the file contains no GPS field.

- Inspect the visible frame for addresses, signs, badges, or landmarks.
- Confirm that the location control you intended was applied to the final selection, not merely to a different library copy.
- Use the receiving service’s preview or attachment details to make sure you are sending the intended copy.
- If the file came from a download or export, repeat the privacy check for that new file rather than relying on an earlier Photos setting.
Do not promise that a social or messaging platform will strip every metadata field unless that platform’s current documentation explicitly says so. The controls described here are the documented Apple, Android, and Google Photos workflows.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Turning off location and assuming old photos are clean
Camera permission and camera toggles affect future captures. Correct the mistake by processing earlier items with the library’s location control or by using a share option that omits location for the particular send.
Removing a place in Google Photos and then downloading the original
A service-level edit can leave the camera-written location in a downloaded file. Correct the workflow by treating the download as a fresh file for privacy purposes and cleaning or excluding its location before uploading it elsewhere.
Changing the library item but attaching an older export
Exports, duplicates, and copies on other devices may not inherit a library change. Select the exact file that will be attached, then apply the appropriate share or metadata control to that file’s route.
Protecting metadata while overlooking the image itself
Removing GPS does not blur a recognizable scene. Crop, blur, or replace identifying visual content when the scene could reveal the place, and remember that this is separate from metadata control.
Expecting one Android label on every phone
Look for the manufacturer’s equivalent rather than following a menu path from another model. Google’s documented examples include Save location, Location tags, Save location info, Geo-tag photos, Store location data, and Tag locations.
What you give up when you remove location
Place metadata is useful for map views, location searches, and trip memories. Google notes that photos without location may not appear in those location-based features. Removing a location therefore trades some organization and discovery convenience for reduced exposure. A selective strategy often works best: keep location for a private, trusted library; remove it from sensitive originals; and disable camera collection entirely if you do not want new photos tagged.
