Make a separate sharing copy, then clean both the file and the pictures. First preserve the untouched recording if it could matter for an insurance claim, investigation or dispute. On a duplicate, inspect metadata, remove or disable location-bearing fields, blur or cover identifying objects throughout the moving clip, review the audio, and inspect the exported file again before sending it.
Metadata removal alone does not make a video anonymous. GPS tags can be gone while a street sign, house number, navigation prompt, filename, reflection or recognizable landmark still identifies where and when it was recorded.
What can expose location or identity in a dashcam file?
A dashcam video is more than the images shown by a player. The container can carry GPS tracks, creation times, device details, stream tags, chapters and filenames. The frames can show plates, faces, addresses, signs, uniforms, paperwork, reflections and screens. Audio can contain names, conversations, spoken addresses or navigation instructions. A service may also add its own speed, map or location overlay during export.
| Exposure source | Examples | What cleaning requires |
|---|---|---|
| Embedded metadata | GPS coordinates or tracks, timestamps, camera model, software tags, chapters and filename information | Inspect the exact file, create a cleaned export, then inspect that export again |
| Visible content | License plates, faces, house numbers, street signs, badges, mail, documents, reflections and screens | Blur, cover, crop, mute or cut the affected material; follow targets across every frame |
| Audio | Names, addresses, conversations, radio traffic and navigation prompts | Listen to the complete clip and mute, replace or remove sensitive sections |
| File and service behavior | Original filename, unsupported identifiers, newly written tags, map overlays or platform-specific sharing data | Use a deliberate export name, check the output file and verify the copy actually sent |
Removing one GPS field does not remove the other categories. A person can infer a location from a landmark even when no location tag remains. Google Photos warns: “Even if you don’t include a location when you share with other people, they may be able to guess based on landmarks in your photo or video.”

Preserve the original before editing
Copy the recording from the card or camera to protected storage and leave that source untouched. Work only on a duplicate intended for casual or public sharing. Do not overwrite the only file with a blurred or metadata-stripped version.
This separation matters when a collision, insurance claim or investigation is possible. The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) says accident recordings may be needed for an investigation and advises retaining personal data only as long as the purpose requires. Its guidance is for Ireland and its GDPR context; it is not a universal legal rule.
Use clear names such as drive-2026-10-16-original.mp4 and drive-2026-10-16-share.mp4. Store the original with restricted access, and keep a note of which export was shared. If another person needs evidence, provide the preserved source through an appropriate channel rather than treating a public, edited clip as the evidentiary record.
Step 1: Inspect the exact file you plan to share
Run inspection on the duplicate, not merely on the camera’s source folder. Different exports can contain different streams and tags. A local inspection avoids uploading an uncleaned recording to a third-party website.
Inspect the container and streams with ffprobe
The following command reports format, stream and chapter information as JSON:
ffprobe -v error -show_format -show_streams -show_chapters -of json input.mp4
Look for GPS-related fields, location tracks, creation dates, device or software names, chapter entries and stream tags. Save the report privately: it can contain the filename and tag values you are trying to protect.
Inspect extended metadata with ExifTool
exiftool -a -ee3 -G1 -s input.mp4
In this workflow, ExifTool’s -ee3 option is used to read location tracks recorded alongside video. Read the output as an inventory, not as a guarantee that every possible identifier has been found. Containers and camera firmware can store data in fields a particular tool does not display.

Time Lapse Parking Mode provides continuous surveillance by offering a condensed overview of any events that may occur during parking periods. *Please note that the parking monitoring function requires a separate hardwire kit.
Step 2: Create a metadata-clean copy
A stream-copy export can remove ordinary global and stream metadata and chapters without re-encoding the pictures. One commonly used FFmpeg pattern is:
ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -map 0:v? -map 0:a? -map_metadata -1 -map_metadata:s:v -1 -map_metadata:s:a -1 -map_chapters -1 -c copy sharing-copy.mp4
The optional maps keep available video and audio streams; -map_metadata -1 and the stream-specific options prevent ordinary tags from being copied; -map_chapters -1 drops chapters; and -c copy avoids re-encoding. Adapt the output container and options when the source uses a codec or track type that cannot be copied into the chosen container.
This command is not a universal anonymizer. It may not remove every container-specific field, identifiers outside ordinary tags, data written by a camera in an unsupported track, or tags newly added by an editing application. It also leaves every visible frame and every audible sound unchanged. Keep the source separate, and inspect sharing-copy.mp4 with both tools after the export.
Step 3: Redact the picture across the whole clip
Play the duplicate from beginning to end and list every object that could identify a person, vehicle or place. Include objects that appear only for a few frames or in a reflection.
- License plates, temporary plates and plates in parked cars
- Faces, children and people wearing identifiable uniforms or badges
- House numbers, business signs, street signs and distinctive building names
- Mail, packages, paperwork, dashboards, navigation screens and phone displays
- Reflections in windows, mirrors, bodywork and wet roads
- Other vehicles, company logos or route information that reveals a regular journey
Use a mask that remains over the target as it moves, changes size or leaves and re-enters the frame. A fixed rectangle placed at the start is not enough for a moving plate or face. If tracking fails, split the clip into sections, keyframe the mask manually, crop the affected edge, cut the segment or remove the entire shot. Choose the least destructive method that meets the audience’s privacy need; a crop or cut can be safer than a mask that briefly slips.
Manual and automatic redaction choices
| Method | Best use | Failure points to check |
|---|---|---|
| Manual blur or opaque cover | Short clips, unusual objects and cases where you need to see exactly what was covered | Mask drift, uncovered frames, feathered edges that reveal text, and targets appearing in another part of the frame |
| Tracked blur | Longer moving shots with consistent plate or face movement | Occlusion, rapid motion, small or off-center targets, camera shake and tracking loss at cuts |
| Crop or cut | A target stays at an edge or an entire segment is unnecessary | New composition may remove context needed by the recipient; cropped reflections can still disclose information |
| Mute or replace the shot | A brief view cannot be safely covered | Silencing the picture does not address audio or metadata elsewhere in the file |
Automatic detection is an aid, not proof of coverage. Insta360’s documented Plate Blur workflow, for supported Insta360 media and compatible app versions, warns that small, blurry, distorted or off-center plates may be missed and that blur edges can jitter. Its workflow supports flat and 360 video, but Android users must export to see the applied effect. Those limitations are reasons to review the rendered export, not evidence that the tool is unsuitable for every supported clip.
Step 4: Review and redact audio separately
Visual blur has no effect on sound. Listen with headphones if possible, including sections where the image appears harmless. Mark names, addresses, conversations, radio messages, spoken registration numbers and navigation prompts.

For a short disclosure, cut the affected interval. For a longer recording, mute only the needed range or replace it with neutral room tone. Check that an editor did not leave the original audio as a second stream. If the audience does not need sound, removing the audio stream entirely can reduce the chance of an accidental disclosure, but verify that your export still plays as intended.

Verification is a separate task from editing. Perform it on the exact file that will be attached or uploaded.
- Run
ffprobeand ExifTool on the exported file. Confirm that expected GPS, chapter and ordinary stream tags are absent, and note any fields that remain. - Play the complete file, not just the first and last minute. Watch at normal speed and frame-by-frame around cuts, turns, stops and camera movement.
- Check every plate, face, sign, document, reflection and screen for mask drift or a brief unblurred frame.
- Listen for names, addresses, conversations and navigation prompts. Confirm that muted sections are actually silent and that no duplicate audio stream remains.
- Confirm orientation, duration, frame rate, image quality and audio synchronization. A privacy export that is rotated, truncated or corrupted may prompt someone to request the original.
- Check the filename and sharing folder for identifying dates, addresses or vehicle numbers. Rename the copy if needed, while retaining the original’s name in your private records.
- Open the file from the same type of attachment, cloud download or messaging workflow the recipient will use. Some services transcode or add their own data.
A clean metadata report establishes only what the inspected tools found. It does not establish that the video is anonymous: visual clues, audio, unsupported fields, identifiers outside ordinary tags and tags newly written during export can remain.
Step 6: Check the destination’s sharing controls
Apple Photos
Apple documents a location-off option for an individual share from Photos. That control applies to that particular Photos sharing action; it is not a general sanitizer for every dashcam file, editor or downloaded copy. If you attach the file elsewhere, inspect that resulting file rather than assuming the Photos setting followed it.
Google Photos
Google Photos says location details are excluded by default for many share types, while warning that landmarks can still reveal where a picture or video was made. The exact behavior depends on the sharing method and service settings. Download the sent copy, when practical, and inspect it instead of relying on a default.
Messaging, cloud links and social networks
Do not assume that a platform strips every tag or preserves your blur exactly as rendered. A service may transcode the video, preserve a filename, create a downloadable original or generate a preview with different data. Treat the platform as an additional processing step: share the cleaned copy, review the recipient-facing result and avoid posting the untouched source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Tool choices and their trade-offs
| Option | Metadata and GPS handling | Visual redaction | Processing and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg plus ffprobe and ExifTool | Local inspection and a documented path for removing ordinary global and stream metadata and chapters; location tracks and unsupported fields still require checking | None; it does not alter visible frames | Works locally and can preserve streams with a copy export, but commands are container- and codec-dependent. Verify the result and keep the source. |
| Insta360 app Plate Blur | Not a general metadata-cleaning workflow | Blur for supported Insta360 flat and 360 media; automatic results have documented limits | Compatibility depends on supported media, device and app version. Android users must export to view the applied blur. |
| everydashcam browser editor | Its export options may retain GPS or add speed and map overlays, so inspect the result | Manual face and plate blur plus beta automatic detection and tracking | Project documentation describes on-device browser processing. It is not independent validation; review every export and target. |
| Fleet camera privacy controls | Geotab documents database-level privacy blurring and separate camera or cloud retention controls | Configured at the fleet-recording system level | Useful for fleet administrators setting policy before recording; it may not clean a consumer’s already-recorded file. |
Choose on five practical axes: whether the tool sees and removes embedded tags or GPS tracks, whether it can follow moving plates and faces, whether footage stays local, whether it supports your camera’s format and resolution, and whether you can reliably review the resulting file. No formal comparative accuracy test establishes that one option catches every target.

- 2.5K Front + 1080P Rear Recording: S60 records 25601440P front video and 1080P rear video to help capture what happens ahead of and behind your car. The front 170 wide-angle lens helps cover more of the road during daily drives or unexpected events
- WDR Night Vision: The starlight night vision sensor and 6-layer glass lens help improve video clarity in low-light conditions. WDR helps balance bright headlights and darker areas, making footage easier to review at night, in tunnels, parking lots, and other changing light conditions
- Loop Recording & G-Sensor Lock: Loop recording replaces older unprotected clips when the card is full. SD card is not included, and the dash cam supports cards up to 256GB. If a sudden impact, hard braking, or collision is detected, the G-sensor locks the current clip to help protect important footage
- Optional 24-Hour Parking Monitor: S60 supports a 24-hour parking monitor with time-lapse recording. This feature requires a compatible Type-C hardwire kit, not included
- 2" IPS Screen & 360 Suction Mount: The 2" IPS screen lets you check the camera view and adjust basic settings directly on the device. The 360 suction mount makes it easier to adjust the camera angle and remove or reinstall the unit
Retention, publication and legal context
Privacy is not only a technical setting. The Irish DPC’s driver guidance, last updated in May 2022, says personal data should be kept only as long as required for the purpose. It also states: “Those using a dash cam in a public area should be aware that the publication of footage, for example on social media platforms, could represent a further act of processing and could risk infringing the data protection rights of recorded individuals.” That statement concerns Irish law and GDPR context; requirements differ elsewhere.
Before public posting, consider whether the audience needs the entire route, whether a shorter excerpt answers the purpose, and whether faces, plates and bystanders can be removed. If footage is needed for an accident or investigation, retain the unedited original securely while making a separate redacted copy for public or casual sharing. Do not rely on a platform’s privacy toggle as a substitute for that decision.

Troubleshooting common failures
The GPS report is empty, but the clip still reveals the route
Check landmarks, road signs, business names, house numbers, reflections and spoken navigation. Metadata inspection cannot remove information encoded in pixels or sound. Crop, blur, cut or mute the relevant sections and review the entire export.
A plate is blurred at the start but becomes visible later
Track the plate through turns, zoom changes, occlusions and exits from the frame. Add keyframes or separate masks for each movement. If reliable tracking is impossible, cut the segment or cover the full region with an opaque shape.
The cleaned file still contains location fields
Inspect which stream or container wrote them. Re-export with metadata and chapter mapping disabled, remove unnecessary streams, and test the output again. If a camera-specific track remains unsupported, use an editor or conversion path that can discard that track, then verify that the conversion did not add a map or speed overlay.
The recipient sees a different result than the local preview
Download the recipient-facing copy and inspect it. The service may have transcoded, regenerated a preview or preserved a downloadable original. Replace the upload with the verified sharing copy or use a transfer method that does not expose the source.
Editing damaged quality or orientation
Return to the preserved source and create a new export with settings compatible with the destination. Confirm rotation, duration, frame rate, synchronization and readability of the redactions before sending. Never “fix” the only original by overwriting it.
A repeatable pre-share checklist
- Original recording is preserved separately and access-restricted.
- Sharing copy has a neutral filename and was inspected with ffprobe and ExifTool.
- GPS, chapters and ordinary tags were removed where supported, and remaining fields were reviewed.
- Every plate, face, sign, number, document, screen and reflection was checked across the full moving clip.
- Audio was heard separately and sensitive sections were muted, cut or removed.
- The complete exported file was played after redaction, including frame-by-frame checks around movement and edits.
- The destination’s actual attachment or download was checked rather than assumed clean.
- Publication, retention and the rights of recorded people were considered for the relevant jurisdiction.
The safest practical rule is simple: preserve the evidence original, sanitize a separate copy, and inspect that exact copy after every export or sharing step. Location metadata is only one part of the privacy problem; the frames, soundtrack and destination can reveal just as much.
