To free space without deleting a Kindle book from your Amazon account, remove the download from the specific device—not the book from your account. The most consistently supported way is Amazon’s account-level device control: open Manage Your Content and Devices, choose Content and Books, select Deliver or remove from device, choose the registered Kindle, and apply the change. Then sync the Kindle and check the library’s All view.
The book remains available in your account for later downloading. Avoid Deregister and Factory reset when your goal is to remove only one downloaded title; both affect the device more broadly.
What “remove from device” actually does
A Kindle book can exist in two relevant places at once: in your Amazon account’s digital library and as a downloaded copy on a particular Kindle e-reader or Kindle app. Removing the download is a device-level action. It clears the local copy from the selected device while leaving the purchase in your account so you can download it again later.

Amazon exposes this control through Deliver or remove from device. It is designed to manage which registered devices receive a title. Removing a book from one Kindle does not automatically remove it from another Kindle or app unless you select that other device as well.

What stays available
- The title remains listed in the Amazon account that bought or redeemed it.
- You can deliver it to the same Kindle again or to another registered Kindle device or app later.
- Your account ownership is not cancelled by removing one device’s download.
What is removed
- The downloaded file on the Kindle device you select.
- Offline access to that title on that device until you download it again.
Amazon may change labels or page layouts over time, and the exact on-device menu sequence is not universal across every Kindle generation or Kindle app version. The account workflow below is the better-supported route when you need a predictable result.
Remove one downloaded book through Amazon’s account page
Use the Amazon account associated with the Kindle book. You do not need to deregister the Kindle or reset it.
- Sign in to the correct Amazon account. Use the account that owns the book. If a household has multiple Amazon accounts, verify the account before changing device delivery.
- Open Manage Your Content and Devices. This is Amazon’s central page for account content and registered devices.
- Select Content, then Books. The Books view narrows the list to Kindle books rather than other digital content.
- Find the title. Search or browse the list until the book you want to clear is visible.
- Open “Deliver or remove from device.” This control lets you choose which registered device should receive or no longer retain the title.
- Select the Kindle to clear. Choose the specific e-reader or Kindle app device that contains the download. If the title is downloaded on more than one device, handle each device separately.
- Apply the change. Confirm the delivery/removal action shown by Amazon.
- Sync the Kindle. On the e-reader or app, run its sync command, then wait for the library to refresh. The title should no longer be stored locally on the selected device, while its account entry remains available for future delivery.
If Amazon presents slightly different wording or a different confirmation layout, look for the same function: selecting a book and managing delivery to a registered device. Do not substitute a deregistration or reset command.

Verify that the download was cleared
A Kindle library can show books that are only in the cloud as well as books stored locally. After syncing, confirm the result rather than relying only on the cover’s appearance.

Check the device library
- Open the Kindle library after synchronization.
- Switch the library view to All, not only Downloaded or a device-only view.
- Clear active filters, collections, or sort settings that could hide the title.
- Search for the book by title or author.
In an All view, the book can still appear as an account item even though it is no longer downloaded. That is expected and is the visual sign that the book has not been lost from your library.
Test a later re-download
When you need the book again, select its library entry and choose the Kindle device as the delivery destination. The title should download again while your account ownership remains unchanged. Re-downloading is a separate delivery action; it does not undo the account record.
Do not confuse removal with deregistration or a factory reset
These commands have different scopes. Choosing the wrong one can disconnect the entire device or erase unsynchronized material.

Why deregistration is the wrong fix for one book
Amazon describes deregistration as disconnecting the Kindle from the Amazon account’s digital content and services. It is not a selective cleanup command. After deregistration, the device will not function as the currently registered reader until it is registered again, and the change affects access to the account’s content relationship rather than one downloaded title.

Why a factory reset can cause data loss
Amazon’s Kindle support documentation states: “A factory reset returns the device to its original factory settings, removing all your personal data, downloaded content, and content that hasn’t been synced.” That includes more than the book you intended to remove. A reset can therefore erase reading material or other changes that have not synchronized and requires the device to be set up again.
Troubleshoot a book that still appears after removal
An entry that remains visible does not necessarily mean the download is still present. Kindle libraries commonly show cloud titles, and filters can make the result confusing.
The cover is still listed
Set the library to All and inspect the title’s status. If the title is listed but requires a download before opening, the local copy has been cleared and the account copy remains. A visible cloud item is not the same as a stored offline file.
The Kindle has not updated
Run the device’s sync command and allow the library time to refresh. If the device is offline, connect it to Wi-Fi before syncing. Then repeat the All-view and filter checks.

A filter or collection hides the result
Clear filters, leave collection-only views, and search the full library by title. Amazon’s troubleshooting guidance specifically recommends choosing All, clearing active filters, and searching for the title when content seems missing.
The book is missing from the account page
First verify that you signed in to the purchasing account and that the content category is Books. For newly purchased content that does not appear in Manage Your Content and Devices, Amazon advises checking the payment status. A purchase that has not completed will not behave like a normally owned Kindle book.
The title disappeared after a reset or deregistration
Those actions affect the whole device, so the local library can be empty or disconnected even though account purchases still exist. Register the Kindle to the intended Amazon account again and sync. Do not use a reset as a routine way to remove individual downloads.

Remove downloads from multiple devices
The account workflow is device-specific. If you read the same title on an e-reader and a phone or tablet app, removing it from the e-reader does not necessarily clear the app’s local copy.

- In Manage Your Content and Devices, locate the book under Content and Books.
- Open Deliver or remove from device.
- Review the registered-device list carefully.
- Select each device from which the local download should be removed.
- Apply the change, then sync each affected e-reader or app.
Leave a device unselected if you want its offline copy to remain. This lets you keep a frequently used book on one reader while clearing it from another.
When to remove a download instead of deleting a book
Removing a device copy is appropriate when the problem is local storage, a crowded library, or a title you no longer need offline. It preserves the account record and makes the book easy to retrieve later.
- Freeing space: Clear large or finished books from one Kindle without changing the account library.
- Reducing clutter: Keep cloud access while showing fewer downloaded titles on a particular device.
- Managing shared devices: Remove a personal title from a borrowed or family device while retaining it in your own account.
- Switching reading devices: Clear the old Kindle after confirming the book is available for delivery to the new one.
Before removing a title you are currently reading, synchronize the Kindle so the latest reading position and annotations can be associated with your account. The account-level removal step is not a substitute for syncing unsent changes.

- Do you want to clear one title from one device? Choose Deliver or remove from device.
- Do you need the Kindle to use a different Amazon account? Consider deregistration only for that account change.
- Are you selling, giving away, or completely wiping the Kindle? A factory reset is the broader operation, and it removes unsynced content.
- Does the title appear to be missing? Sync first, choose All, clear filters, and search.
- Is a new purchase absent from the account page? Verify the purchasing account and payment status.

The distinction is simple but important: removing a downloaded book from a Kindle changes that device’s local storage, while the Amazon account remains the source of the purchased title. Use the account page’s Deliver or remove from device control, select only the intended registered Kindle, and sync afterward.
