To remove vanilla static contaminated areas, edit the active mission’s cfgEffectArea.json, delete the unwanted objects from its Areas array, save valid JSON, and restart the server. To disable every static effect area, Bohemia Interactive’s documented method is an empty file containing only {}. If gas zones still appear afterward, they are probably dynamic Central Economy events and must be disabled in the mission’s event configuration instead.
First identify which kind of contaminated area you are removing
DayZ can produce contaminated areas through two separate configuration paths. Static effect areas are defined in the mission folder’s cfgEffectArea.json. Dynamic contaminated zones are spawned by the Central Economy event system. Editing one does not automatically change the other, so the correct fix depends on what you see in game.

A zone that appears at the same map location every restart is a strong indication that you are dealing with a static definition. A zone that appears as an event and later disappears is more consistent with a dynamic spawn. Treat that as a troubleshooting clue rather than an absolute rule, because custom missions and mods can change the presentation.
Find the active mission folder
Make the change in the mission folder the server is actually running. A host may have separate folders for Chernarus, Livonia, test instances, or custom maps. Editing a dormant copy has no effect.

- Stop the server if your host requires it before editing files. If the control panel supports a built-in editor while the server is running, follow that host’s documented workflow, but do not assume a live process will reload the file.
- Open the server’s file manager or connect through the file-access method provided by your host.
- Locate the active mission directory. Use the mission selected in the server startup configuration as the deciding reference, not the folder name you happen to open first.
- Look for
cfgEffectArea.jsonin that directory. If you cannot see the mission files, ask the host for file-manager access or request that support expose the mission folder.
Keep the map and server build in mind while working. The schema documented for one DayZ release may not be identical to an older or modded installation.
Back up cfgEffectArea.json before editing
Download or copy the original file before making any change. Give the backup a descriptive name that records the map or server instance, such as a local copy with the date in its filename. Do not leave a second JSON file in the mission folder if the server or host might parse every file there; store the backup outside the active mission directory.
The backup gives you a direct rollback if a comma, brace, or schema value is damaged. It also lets you restore individual area objects if you later decide that only one region should remain.
Remove selected static areas from the Areas array
Use this method when you want to keep some static contaminated areas and remove others.
- Open the backed-up copy’s live counterpart,
cfgEffectArea.json, in a plain-text editor. - Find the top-level
Areasarray. Each entry in that array represents one configured static effect area. - Identify the unwanted entry using the location and values already present in your file. Do not rewrite fields you do not understand and do not copy a schema from a different server version without checking compatibility.
- Remove the complete object for the unwanted area, including its opening and closing braces. If it is between two entries, leave one comma between the entries that remain; if it is the last entry, remove the preceding comma as appropriate.
- Save the file as plain JSON. JSON does not accept explanatory comments, trailing commas, or editor-added markup.
- Validate that the file still has balanced braces, brackets, and quotation marks before uploading or saving it in the host panel.
Removing an object from the array changes the static list; it does not create a character, item, or map wipe. Static areas are created when the mission starts and are not persistent entities that need to be cleaned from a database.

Disable every static effect area with an empty JSON object
If the goal is to turn off all areas controlled by the static configuration, Bohemia Interactive Community documentation specifies an empty file: the file should contain an opening and closing brace with nothing else.
{}- Keep a copy of the original
cfgEffectArea.jsonoutside the active mission folder. - Replace the active file’s contents with exactly
{}. Do not add comments, a trailing comma, or explanatory text. - Save it under the exact filename
cfgEffectArea.jsonin the active mission folder. - Restart the server so the mission configuration is read again.
This documented empty-object method disables the static effect-area list as a whole. It does not disable a dynamic contaminated-area event that is being generated through Central Economy.
Restart the server and understand the wipe question
A mission-file edit is read during server startup. Perform a full restart through the host control panel or your normal server-management procedure after saving the file. A stop-and-start cycle is safer than assuming a restart command was accepted while the process is still running.
For vanilla static areas, removing entries from cfgEffectArea.json does not require a character wipe, persistence wipe, or map reset. The areas are created at mission start rather than stored as persistent world entities. Keep your backup, however, because a later update or mod change can restore a different configuration.
When gas zones continue to appear: inspect Central Economy events
If the static file is empty or the unwanted objects are gone but contaminated zones still spawn, move to the dynamic-event path. Dynamic zones are spawned through Central Economy and are independent of the static JSON list.

- Open the same active mission folder and locate the Central Economy event configuration. Depending on the mission and server layout, the relevant definitions are commonly in
events.xmlor associated event files. - Search for the contaminated-area event definition rather than searching only for the word “gas.” Event names and surrounding XML can vary by mission version.
- Disable the contaminated-area event using the syntax expected by that mission’s event configuration. Preserve well-formed XML and avoid deleting unrelated events.
- Save the event file, then restart the server to load the changed mission configuration.
- Review the server RPT or other startup log for XML parsing errors and event-loading messages before testing in game.
Do not assume that an empty cfgEffectArea.json can suppress these spawns. It controls static effect areas; Central Economy controls dynamic event creation.
The DayZ Wiki describes a dynamic contaminated zone on official servers as lasting about 35 minutes. That is version-sensitive gameplay behavior, not a configuration guarantee for every private server, mission, or mod. A zone disappearing after a period therefore does not prove that the event has been disabled.
Use the restart log to diagnose a failed change

Account for DayZ version and schema differences
Bohemia’s official documentation records a static-zone configuration change in DayZ 1.28 and documents the FillWithParticles function with this signature:
FillWithParticles(vector pos, float areaRadius, float outwardsBleed, float partSize, int partId)The function signature is useful as a version marker, not as a command you paste into cfgEffectArea.json. Use the schema that belongs to the installed server build. An older format may be backward-compatible, but that cannot be assumed for every custom mission or script.
Mods can define their own EffectArea classes, scripts, or event hooks. If a zone survives both the static-file and Central Economy checks, identify the mod that owns the behavior before deleting additional mission data. Removing unrelated files can create new errors without addressing the source.

Verify the result without risking players
After the restart, use the server log and an in-game check from a safe location. The purpose of the check is to distinguish a configuration load from an actual zone change.
- Confirm the restart completed and the newest RPT/log contains no JSON or XML parsing error related to the edited file.
- Join with a character positioned away from the suspected area, or use a safe test account if your server policy allows it.
- Travel toward the former static location only after confirming the server is stable.
- If the location is clear but another zone later appears, record its timing and location; that pattern points toward a dynamic event or mod rather than the removed static entry.
- Do not treat a single short observation as proof that a dynamic event is disabled. Continue checking the event configuration and logs if spawns recur.
Never advertise the change as tested unless you or an administrator actually completed this restart and in-game verification.

Common editing mistakes to avoid
Editing the wrong map
Servers often retain several mission directories. A correctly edited file in an inactive Chernarus or Livonia folder has no effect on the running instance. Confirm the mission selected at startup before changing anything.
Leaving comments in JSON
Comments are convenient for humans but are not valid JSON. Remove them from the active file. Keep explanations in a separate note or in your backup filename instead.
Deleting only part of an area object
An area is represented by a complete object inside Areas. Removing one property while leaving an incomplete object can cause a parse failure or unpredictable behavior. Delete the entire unwanted object when pruning the list.

Forgetting the comma rule
JSON arrays require commas between neighboring objects, not after the final object. Check the punctuation whenever you remove the first, middle, or last entry.

Expecting a wipe to remove a configuration entry
A wipe addresses persistence data; it does not repair a mission configuration. For vanilla static areas, the relevant action is editing the file and restarting, not erasing player or map data.
Changing files while a manager silently restores defaults
Some hosting panels regenerate mission files during deployment or updates. If your edit disappears, compare the file after restart and inspect the panel’s startup or deployment settings before repeating the change.
If the host does not expose mission files
You need access to the active mission folder to edit either the static JSON or the Central Economy event definitions. When a provider hides those files, ask support to grant file-manager or FTP/SFTP access, or ask them to apply the exact change to the correct mission instance. Choose DayZ server hosting with mission-file access if independent configuration is a requirement.
Give support the map, instance name, exact filename, and intended scope: selected static areas, all static areas via {}, or the dynamic contaminated-area event. That prevents a support agent from disabling the wrong system.
