You can remove unwanted bundled game files and load a personal collection, but the safe procedure depends on the exact Anbernic model, operating system, firmware build and microSD-card arrangement. Identify those details first, make a complete backup, then edit only the card and folders that the matching Anbernic instructions identify as game storage. Do not reflash firmware merely to delete games.

Start by identifying the exact handheld and firmware

Anbernic uses different firmware packages, storage layouts and menu behavior across its handhelds. A procedure that works on an RG40XXH may not apply to another XX-family model, an older device or an Android handheld. Anbernic warns that installing firmware intended for a different model can stop the device from starting normally.

Record these details before removing the card

  • Model: Read the name printed on the case, packaging or purchase record. If the device boots, check its system-information screen as well. Do not rely on a similar-looking product name or a seller’s shorthand listing.
  • Operating system: Note whether the handheld runs Linux-based firmware or Android. Android devices use a different file-management workflow from the H700/XX Linux tutorials, and an Android app may control where games are indexed.
  • Firmware build: Record the version shown in system settings. Firmware labels and availability change, so use the support page for the exact model rather than a similarly named device.
  • Card arrangement: Determine whether the handheld has one card containing both the operating system and games, or separate system and game cards. Some models have two slots without supporting every possible two-card layout.
  • Slot identity: Note which physical slot currently contains each card before removing anything. Photographing the slots and labels can prevent an accidental swap during reassembly.

The RG40XXH support page is a useful example of the model-specific approach: it groups H700/XX-series tutorials, including an “add games” tutorial and a “second card integration” tutorial. Other Anbernic models have their own support pages and instructions. Start from that official page, not from a folder path copied from a different handheld.

Back up the card before deleting anything

Do not begin by deleting files. Copy the accessible contents of the microSD card to a computer, or create a complete card image with an appropriate disk-imaging utility. Keep the original card untouched until the replacement library has been tested and your saves open correctly.

Why a backup matters

A game card can contain more than ROMs. It may also hold save data, emulator settings, BIOS files, artwork, playlists, boot files and system configuration. A mistaken deletion can therefore affect more than the visible game list. Anbernic specifically advises backing up important data before making a system card, and firmware flashing rewrites that card.

Use a two-stage backup check

  1. Copy or image the card while the handheld is working normally. If you have two cards, back up each one separately and label the backups by slot.
  2. Open the backup on the computer and confirm that it contains the expected partitions or folders, save files and configuration data. A desktop may show only one partition even though the card contains additional system data.
  3. Keep the original card and backup in a safe place while you test the edited card. Do not overwrite the only backup with a later, untested copy.

If the computer cannot read the card, stop rather than formatting it. A format prompt can erase the only copy of the data. Try a different reader or computer, and use the card image or an earlier backup if the contents remain inaccessible.

Understand which card stores the games

There is no universal Anbernic ROM path. Some devices use one microSD card for the operating system and games; others can keep the system on one card and games on a second card. The exact behavior depends on the model and firmware, and even a firmware update can change how a card is indexed.

Single-card and two-card arrangements

Arrangement How it works Advantages Limitations
Single card The operating system, emulators and game files share one card. Only one card must be managed; this is the simplest physical setup. The installed system image may reserve or restrict space, and replacing or reflashing the card affects both the system and games.
Two cards A system card boots the handheld while a supported second card holds game files. Games can be replaced or expanded without altering the system card, when the firmware supports this arrangement. Not every model or firmware build supports it, and folder names, card formatting and import steps differ.

For an H700/XX handheld that supports a second card, follow Anbernic’s second-card integration tutorial for that exact family. Do not assume that inserting a card into a second slot automatically makes it a game card. The firmware may require a particular structure before it scans the card, and some devices expect the system card to create folders on first boot.

Check for the 16 GB image limitation

Anbernic’s system-update page warns that several listed 16 GB operating-system images cannot expand the SD card or install ROMs on that same SD card after installation. Examples listed on the page include the RG35XXH, RG40XXH, RG40XXV, RG35XXSP, RG35XX Plus/2024 and RG CubeXX, among other models. This warning applies to the specific images identified on that page, not automatically to every Anbernic handheld.

Firmware listings and versions are volatile. The official page accessed on 13 October 2026 showed model-specific builds dated May 2026, so check the current entry for your model before changing cards. If the image says the system card cannot be expanded or used for ROM installation, plan on a supported second game card or the storage arrangement described in that model’s documentation. Do not assume that buying a larger card alone removes an image-level restriction.

Remove bundled games without damaging the system

Once the backup is complete and the correct game-storage card is identified, remove only the individual files you no longer want. Work slowly: the goal is library housekeeping, not a firmware modification.

1. Remove the card safely

Shut the handheld down through its normal power menu. Do not pull the card while the device is writing data. Insert it into a reliable card reader and let the computer mount the card without formatting it. If the device has two cards, remove and edit one card at a time so their contents cannot be confused.

2. Find the game directories using model documentation

Use the exact model’s “add games” instructions to identify the system folders. The retrieved Anbernic documentation does not establish one folder name that is safe to publish for every model, so do not rely on a generic path such as /Roms. A Linux handheld may expose several system-specific directories; an Android device may use internal storage, a removable card or an app-specific folder.

Read the tutorial for the firmware currently installed, not only the tutorial for the hardware name. If you changed firmware previously, its folder layout may differ from the factory card. When the instructions refer to a second card, verify that you are looking at that card’s root and not the boot card’s similarly named directory.

3. Distinguish game files from supporting files

Game directories can contain more than the files that appear as titles in the menu. Leave system files, emulator programs, BIOS files, save folders, configuration files, metadata and artwork in place unless the model-specific instructions explicitly identify them as removable. A filename that looks like a game may be a descriptor or index used by several titles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a folder’s purpose is unclear, leave it alone and consult the matching manual or tutorial. Do not delete an entire system directory merely because it contains unwanted entries. Removing one known title at a time makes it easier to identify the change if the menu or a save stops working.

4. Delete unwanted titles individually

Open the relevant system folder, select only the bundled game files you want removed and move them to a temporary computer folder first. This gives you a second recovery option while you test the handheld. After the new library works, you can permanently delete the temporary copies.

Check for companion files before deleting. Some game formats use more than one file, and deleting only one part can leave a broken entry. Conversely, deleting a file that belongs to a multi-disc set may make another title fail. The model tutorial should determine which files constitute one supported game.

5. Preserve required formats and naming rules

Do not rename or recompress files simply to make the list look tidy. Some firmware expects a particular archive format, filename pattern, cue file or companion file. The official pages name add-games tutorials, but their full step-by-step content is not exposed in the indexed material used here. Verify the current tutorial for your model before changing extensions or folder names.

Add your own authorized game files

Only copy files that you are authorized to use. Homebrew, public-domain releases and files supplied under a license that permits copying are the clearest examples. Device documentation does not create a general copyright exception for commercial ROMs, and owning a physical cartridge does not automatically establish that downloading a separate ROM copy is lawful. Copyright rules depend on your jurisdiction and circumstances.

Do not treat the factory card as proof that every bundled file is lawful to redistribute. You may remove files you do not want, but that does not grant permission to copy them to another person or publish them. If you are unsure about a commercial title, consult the law that applies where you live rather than relying on a blanket claim about personal backups.

Copy files to the correct system folder

  1. Use the model-specific add-games instructions to identify the destination folder and any required subfolders.
  2. Copy the authorized files without changing the archive type or required companion files.
  3. Keep each game with the files it needs. For formats that use a cue or other descriptor, do not copy only the data file if the tutorial requires both.
  4. Leave existing saves, BIOS files and emulator configuration untouched.
  5. Transfer a small test group first. It is easier to diagnose a naming or folder problem with three known files than with an entire library.

Do not download ROMs from unofficial sites as part of this process. The safe file-management procedure is independent of where a game came from; the source must provide permission for your use.

Finish the transfer correctly

  1. Wait for the file copy to finish and compare the computer’s copy count with what you intended to transfer.
  2. Use the operating system’s eject command for the card. Do not remove it while the computer reports pending writes.
  3. Return the card to the correct slot and boot the handheld. If you changed a second card, leave the system card in its original slot.
  4. If the new titles do not appear, use the model’s documented refresh or rescan function. Exact controls were not verified across Anbernic firmware, so do not assume a universal button sequence.
  5. Launch several newly added games and verify that existing saves and settings remain available.
  6. Only after those checks should you empty the temporary deletion folder or retire the original card.

When firmware flashing is involved

Flashing is an update or recovery operation, not a normal way to clean up bundled games. It rewrites the system card and can remove data, so do not reflash simply because you dislike the factory library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you genuinely need to reinstall firmware

  1. Confirm the exact model and read the current official firmware entry for that model.
  2. Check whether the image has a capacity or ROM-storage restriction, especially when it is a listed 16 GB image.
  3. Back up the card and any separate game card before proceeding.
  4. Follow the model-specific flashing instructions exactly, including the required card and image preparation.
  5. After the first successful boot, shut down normally and restore only the game files that the matching add-games instructions support.
  6. Keep the original system card until the replacement boots repeatedly and the game library is visible.

Using another model’s image because its file name looks similar can prevent normal startup. If a flash fails, return to the exact model’s recovery instructions and use the backup rather than improvising folder changes.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

The handheld boots but new games are missing

  • Confirm that you edited the card the firmware actually scans. On a two-card setup, the system card may boot normally while the game card is missing or in the wrong slot.
  • Check the destination folder against the exact model tutorial; a generic ROM folder may be wrong.
  • Confirm that the file format and required companion files match the firmware’s instructions.
  • Perform the documented library refresh or reboot procedure.
  • Test one known-good file before copying a larger batch. If that file appears, the problem may be naming, format or an individual damaged file rather than the card itself.

The card appears empty or the computer asks to format it

Cancel the format prompt. Some system cards contain partitions that a desktop operating system does not display normally. Reinsert the card, try a different reader and rely on the backup or card image if the contents remain inaccessible. Never let the computer initialize a card that still contains the only working installation.

The handheld no longer starts after card changes

Restore the original card or your verified card image. If the problem followed a firmware flash, confirm that the image was for the exact model; Anbernic warns that mismatched firmware can prevent normal startup. Also check that the system card was returned to its original slot and that no boot files were moved during the transfer.

Games launch but saves or settings are gone

You may have removed or replaced save/configuration data rather than only game files. Stop editing, restore those folders from the backup and test again. Keep separate backup copies until saves are confirmed across several games, because a title can launch successfully while its prior save path is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A second card is not recognized

Check whether the model and firmware support a second-card arrangement at all. Then follow the official integration tutorial for that family, including its formatting and folder requirements. A second slot alone does not prove that every card layout is supported. Verify the card’s physical position and test it with the small, documented folder structure before adding a large library.

Choosing a replacement or second microSD card

A compatible card can serve as a backup, replacement system card or supported second game card. Choose it according to the exact model, firmware image, supported capacity and slot role. There is no universal capacity recommendation because the firmware image may impose its own limits, and some 16 GB images cannot be expanded or used for ROM storage on that card.

  • For a backup: Match the original card’s usable layout and keep the image unchanged. Store the image separately from the card you actively edit.
  • For a replacement system card: Verify that the current firmware entry supports the card and model, then restore the image before adding games.
  • For a second game card: Confirm second-card support and follow the integration tutorial before copying files. Do not format it according to a generic handheld guide.
  • For transfers: A card reader is useful, but no particular reader or card model has been established as tested for this procedure.

A safe repeatable workflow

For future library changes, use this checklist:

  1. Identify the model, operating system and firmware build.
  2. Read the matching Anbernic add-games or second-card instructions.
  3. Back up the relevant card before every large change.
  4. Confirm whether the card is a system card, game card or both.
  5. Remove only unwanted game files, not system, BIOS, save or configuration data.
  6. Add only files you are authorized to use, preserving the required format and naming.
  7. Eject the card safely, boot and refresh the library using documented controls.
  8. Test new games and existing saves before discarding the backup.
  9. Keep a note of the working card arrangement, firmware version and destination folders for the next transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I delete every bundled ROM at once?

It is safer to remove individual, identified game files after a backup. Do not delete whole system directories, BIOS files, saves, configuration data or metadata unless the exact model instructions say they are removable.

Where is the ROM folder on an Anbernic?

There is no universal path. The folder depends on the model, operating system, firmware and card arrangement. Use the exact model’s official add-games instructions instead of assuming a folder named Roms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to reflash firmware to remove the factory games?

No. Reflashing rewrites the system card and is intended for updates or recovery. Remove unwanted files from the documented game-storage location, and reflash only when the model-specific instructions require it.

Can I use a larger microSD card to get more game space?

Not always. Anbernic warns that certain listed 16 GB system images cannot be expanded or used for ROM installation on that same card. Check the current firmware entry for your exact model and consider a supported second game card.

Can I put games on a second card?

Only if the model and firmware support that arrangement. H700/XX devices may have an official second-card integration procedure, but a second slot by itself does not guarantee support or identify the required folders.

What should I do if my computer asks to format the card?

Cancel the prompt. A system card may contain partitions the computer does not display normally. Try another reader and use your backup or card image; formatting can erase the working installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do copied games not appear in the menu?

You may have used the wrong card, slot, folder, file format or naming convention. Check the exact add-games tutorial, confirm companion files are present, then use the documented refresh or reboot process.

Is downloading a ROM legal if I own the cartridge?

Ownership does not automatically establish that downloading a separate ROM copy is lawful. Use homebrew, public-domain releases or files licensed for copying, and check the law and circumstances that apply in your jurisdiction.

Will deleting a game delete its save?

It can, if you remove a save or configuration folder along with the game or replace the card. Back up saves separately, delete only identified game files and test existing saves before discarding backups.

Which Anbernic firmware file should I install?

Use only the image listed for the exact model and follow its current official instructions. Anbernic warns that firmware for another model can prevent normal startup, even when the product names look similar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Identify the exact Anbernic model, firmware and card roles; back up before editing; remove only identified game files; and add only files you are authorized to use. Treat single-card and two-card layouts as model-specific, check warnings attached to 16 GB system images, and never reflash merely to clean up the bundled library.
