To completely uninstall AVG AntiVirus Free or AVG Internet Security from Windows 11 or Windows 10, use Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select AVG, choose Uninstall, and finish the AVG Setup prompts. Restart when asked. If the ordinary removal fails, use AVG’s official Uninstall Tool; it removes the software in Safe Mode.
Uninstall AVG through Windows Settings
- Save your work, then open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps. Find AVG AntiVirus or AVG Internet Security. The exact list label can vary by Windows version. Microsoft documents this Settings route for Windows 10 and 11.
- Open the app’s menu and select Uninstall. Follow the instructions in the AVG Setup window to confirm and complete removal. If User Account Control asks for permission, approve only if you initiated the removal and the publisher shown is AVG. AVG’s uninstall instructions describe this process.
- Restart Windows when AVG displays the completion prompt. AVG says the restart completes removal; Microsoft notes that some app removals also require a reboot.
Alternatively, open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, right-click AVG, and choose Uninstall. Use this legacy route if you prefer it or Settings does not remove the app. AVG warns that after removal, the device will no longer be protected by AVG AntiVirus against malware and other threats.
If AVG will not uninstall
Run AVG’s official Uninstall Tool
Use the tool if the standard uninstall fails or reports that setup is already running. Download it from AVG’s Uninstall Tool instructions. AVG’s documented process restarts Windows in Safe Mode.
- Run
avg_av_clear.exeas administrator. - Accept the prompt to restart into Safe Mode.
- In the tool, choose Remove under Remove only, then confirm.
- Wait for cleanup to finish and restart Windows.
Choose Remove only for an uninstall; the tool also offers a remove-and-reinstall option. Avoid manually deleting AVG folders or editing the registry as a substitute for the official cleanup process.

For a managed AVG Business device
If your organization manages the computer, use its AVG management console and follow the administrator’s removal workflow. AVG cautions that removing business antivirus while the management agent remains can cause the software to be installed again. See AVG’s business device-removal guidance.
If Windows still lists AVG
Restart the PC and try removing the app again through Settings. For Windows 10 removal problems caused by incomplete uninstall data or corrupted entries, Microsoft also documents the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter on its program installation and removal troubleshooting page. Follow Microsoft’s current instructions rather than attempting registry edits.

Check antivirus protection after removal
Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and inspect Manage providers to see which antivirus is active. Microsoft says, “If you uninstall the other app, Microsoft Defender Antivirus turns back on automatically.” Check the displayed provider rather than assuming protection has switched successfully, especially on an organization-managed PC or if Windows Security reports a problem. Uninstalling AVG does not cancel a paid subscription
If you paid for AVG Internet Security, removing the application does not cancel its subscription. Handle billing cancellation separately through AVG’s subscription cancellation process.

Windows 10 support status
Uninstalling AVG works on Windows 10, but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s support notice. That date does not change the removal steps; it is relevant when deciding how to keep a Windows 10 PC protected and maintained.
