First determine how AnyDesk was installed, then preserve evidence if the installation or a session is unexpected. Remove the matching package or custom deployment, verify that no package, process, or anydesk systemd service remains, and separately review unattended-access settings, ACLs, session history, and operating-system evidence. Uninstalling changes the current state; it cannot prove whether an earlier remote session occurred.
Decide whether this is an uninstall or a possible security incident
If you installed AnyDesk yourself and simply no longer need it, you can follow the removal procedure for your Linux distribution. If the program appeared without explanation, an unknown person connected, or credentials may have been shared, pause before deleting anything. Treat the machine as a possible security incident until you have recorded what is available.
Write down the date and time, the visible AnyDesk ID or alias, the currently logged-in users, and the package, process, and service state. Save relevant system and application records before cleanup where practical. Removing a package, configuration directory, or log can reduce the evidence available to determine what happened. AnyDesk’s documentation describes application settings and retention behavior, but it does not define a complete Linux forensic or incident-response procedure.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On a personal computer with no suspicious signs, ordinary package removal is usually appropriate.
- On a work computer, follow your organization’s incident-response process and contact its administrator or security team before making changes.
- For a system containing sensitive data, preserve the machine’s state and involve qualified incident-response personnel rather than relying on an uninstall as an investigation.
Identify how AnyDesk was installed
The removal command depends on the deployment method. AnyDesk publishes Linux packages for Debian-family systems and RPM-family systems. A portable executable, extracted archive, custom client, or managed corporate deployment needs a different approach. The official Linux download page listed version 8.1.0, released September 23, 2026, at the time these instructions were prepared (October 11, 2026); package names and supported distributions can change.

Start by identifying the distribution and checking for a package. On most systems, these commands are read-only:
cat /etc/os-release
command -v anydesk
pgrep -a anydesk
cat /etc/os-release shows the distribution family. command -v reports an executable found in your current PATH; it will not find every custom installation. pgrep shows running AnyDesk processes, if any. Do not infer the installation method from an application icon alone.
| Installation branch | Use it when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| DEB package | AnyDesk was installed through a Debian/Ubuntu-family package route | The package database contains the actual package name and your package manager is apt or a compatible tool. |
| RPM package | AnyDesk was installed on Fedora, RHEL-compatible, openSUSE, or another RPM-family system | Whether dnf, yum, or zypper owns the package. |
| Portable or custom deployment | The executable came from an archive, a custom client, or a managed software bundle | The executable path, any custom systemd unit, configuration location, and organizational ownership. |
| Preserve evidence first | Installation or access is unexpected | Logs, settings, users, service state, and timestamps before cleanup. |
Confirm the package name before removing it. A similarly named package, a locally rebuilt package, or a custom client may not be owned by the standard AnyDesk package entry.

Confirm the package
Query the Debian package database before changing anything:
dpkg -l anydesk
apt-cache policy anydesk
An installed entry normally appears with an installed-state marker in the dpkg output. If no package is installed, do not force an apt removal; investigate whether AnyDesk is portable or was installed under another package name.
Remove the package
- Review the package manager’s proposed changes and dependency list.
- For a normal package removal, run
sudo apt remove anydesk. - Read the confirmation screen. Stop if it proposes removing unrelated desktop, network, or management software.
- Allow the operation to finish, then record the result and time if the machine may be part of an incident.
This is a package-manager example, not a universal AnyDesk uninstall command. An enterprise repository, a different package name, or a front-end such as another Debian package tool can alter the exact command. Use the manager’s own transaction preview as the authority for your system.
Choose configuration cleanup deliberately
Package removal and configuration removal are separate decisions. AnyDesk states that ID and settings are kept by default during uninstall unless configuration files are specifically selected for removal. Keeping them may preserve useful evidence and make a later review possible. Removing them can be appropriate for a routine decommissioning, but it can also destroy timestamps, access-control settings, or other clues. If access was suspicious, preserve a copy through your organization’s evidence process before deleting configuration.

rpm -q anydesk
command -v dnf
command -v yum
command -v zypper
On a modern Fedora or RHEL-compatible system, dnf is common. Older or compatibility installations may use yum; openSUSE commonly uses zypper. The query result and your distribution’s documentation determine which manager owns the installation.
Remove with the matching manager
- For a DNF-managed installation, preview and run
sudo dnf remove anydesk. - For a YUM-managed installation, the equivalent form is commonly
sudo yum remove anydesk. - For a Zypper-managed installation, use the package removal operation offered by
sudo zypper remove anydesk. - Inspect every proposed package change and cancel if unrelated software would be removed.
These are distribution package-manager examples. They are not a Linux uninstall switch documented on AnyDesk’s Linux command-line page, and the exact transaction can differ for a vendor-managed repository or a locally rebuilt package.
Do not use the Windows --remove option on Linux. AnyDesk documents that option on its Windows uninstall material; its Linux command-line reference lists Linux administration and client commands but does not provide a Linux uninstall parameter.

If neither dpkg nor rpm reports the package, the program may be an extracted executable, a custom AnyDesk client, or software installed by an organization’s management system. First locate the process and executable without deleting it:
pgrep -a anydesk
readlink -f /proc/<PID>/exe
Replace <PID> with the process ID shown by pgrep. If no process is running, search only locations you are authorized to inspect and check shell history, deployment records, and desktop launchers. A managed installation may be recreated automatically after manual deletion, so the owner or management console must be consulted.
For a custom systemd deployment, list units and inspect their ownership before removing anything:
systemctl list-unit-files | grep -i anydesk
systemctl status anydesk
systemctl cat anydesk
systemctl cat can show whether the unit is vendor-provided or stored as a local override. Do not delete a unit, executable, or configuration directory merely because its name contains “anydesk” when an organization manages the machine. Record paths and timestamps, then follow the approved change or incident process.

Verify that the current installation is gone
Verification must cover package state, processes, and the system service. A missing icon is not sufficient, and a clean current state does not establish what happened in the past.

Check the systemd service
systemctl status anydesk
systemctl is-enabled anydesk
On a removed installation, status may report that the unit was not found, and is-enabled may return a non-enabled or not-found result. On a machine without systemd, these commands may not apply. AnyDesk identifies the service as anydesk; a remaining active or enabled unit deserves investigation before it is deleted.
Check running processes
pgrep -a anydesk
No output means no matching process was found at that moment. It does not rule out a portable copy with a different name or a process that starts later. If a process remains, capture its executable path and parent process, then determine whether a service manager, desktop autostart entry, or management agent launches it.
Check the package database again
dpkg -l anydesk
rpm -q anydesk
Use the query appropriate to your distribution. A package-query failure after removal is expected, but a positive result means the package remains or was reinstalled. Do not treat an absent package as proof that all files, settings, or historical records are gone.
Check autostart and scheduled launch points
Review desktop autostart entries, user services, system timers, cron jobs, and your organization’s management agent for references to the executable path. Locations and tools differ by distribution, desktop environment, and policy, so do not assume one universal directory. Preserve suspicious entries before editing them if an incident is possible.
Understand what configuration removal does
AnyDesk distinguishes the application package from its configuration. A normal uninstall can leave ID and settings so that they survive a reinstall; explicit configuration-file removal is a separate action. That behavior is useful when you need to inspect unattended-access choices or preserve evidence, but it means that deleting the package alone may not remove every local artifact.
Before deleting residual files, record their path, owner, permissions, modification time, and contents according to your evidence policy. Avoid publishing credentials or tokens in a ticket. If the device is personal and the access was clearly authorized, remove only the configuration you no longer need using the distribution’s documented package or application procedure. Do not run broad commands such as recursive deletion of every directory whose name resembles AnyDesk.
Review whether remote access could have been unauthorized
Check unattended access
AnyDesk’s unattended-access feature permits a connection without someone at the computer accepting an incoming prompt when valid credentials are supplied. Open AnyDesk’s Security settings and determine whether unattended access was enabled, which credentials or tokens were configured, and who was supposed to know them. Installed clients require administrative privileges to change Security settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a password may have been exposed, change it from a trusted device or trusted local session and revoke or replace any associated credentials. Do not reuse a password used for email, operating-system login, or another service. If an employee or contractor has left, AnyDesk recommends changing unattended-access passwords that may have been shared during offboarding.

Review the access-control list
Inspect the ACL for allowed AnyDesk IDs or aliases. An ACL can restrict which incoming identities are accepted; an unfamiliar entry is a lead, not automatic proof of a successful connection. Remove entries that are no longer authorized and document the change before making it if the machine is under investigation.
Check interactive-access behavior
Determine whether ordinary interactive incoming sessions required a local accept prompt and whether the person who normally uses the computer would have seen one. Interactive and unattended sessions have different evidence and control implications. A user not recalling a prompt does not conclusively rule out unattended access, another logged-in user, or a session that ended before observation.
Consider two-factor authentication
AnyDesk’s security guidance describes two-factor authentication as an additional control. Confirm whether it was enabled for the relevant account or access workflow. If it was not enabled and remote credentials may have leaked, enable it after securing the account and review every trusted device or recovery method associated with it.
Look for evidence in more than one place
AnyDesk history or session information, when available in the installed version, can show connection details. Preserve the records before uninstalling or clearing application data. The exact information retained depends on version, settings, and retention behavior.
Correlate that information with operating-system evidence:
- Authentication records for local and remote accounts, including unexpected successful logins, privilege changes, and new users.
- Service and startup changes, such as a newly enabled unit, timer, cron entry, desktop autostart item, or management policy.
- File timestamps and process-launch evidence around the suspected connection time.
- Firewall, router, endpoint, or network-monitor records showing unexpected outbound activity.
- Account, browser, SSH, cloud, and password-manager alerts that coincide with the AnyDesk event.
There is no single Linux log path that is universal. Journal configuration, traditional authentication logs, retention limits, desktop environment, distribution, and AnyDesk version all affect what exists. A missing record is therefore not evidence that no connection occurred. Preserve the original files and note the system time zone when exporting records.
AnyDesk’s Linux support information says incoming sessions require an Xorg graphical session, while Wayland is supported for outgoing connections. This distinction can help explain whether a particular incoming connection was technically possible in the observed desktop environment, but it does not show that anyone attempted or completed a session.
Respond when an unknown session is plausible
- From a separate trusted device, change important passwords beginning with email, operating-system administration, financial services, and identity providers.
- Revoke AnyDesk credentials, tokens, trusted devices, and ACL entries that may be exposed.
- Disconnect the Linux machine from networks if doing so will not destroy volatile evidence or violate an organizational response plan.
- Preserve logs, configuration, process information, and timestamps before cleanup.
- For a work device or a system containing sensitive data, transfer the case to your security or incident-response team.
- After evidence collection and authorization, remove AnyDesk and remediate any other persistence or account compromise found.
These actions are prudent containment steps, not a claim that AnyDesk itself was malicious. Remote-access software can be legitimate while still being misused through stolen credentials, an overly broad ACL, or an unmanaged installation.

Troubleshoot common removal problems
The package manager says AnyDesk is not installed
Check the other package family, the executable path, custom launchers, and management records. A portable binary or custom client will not appear in dpkg or rpm. Do not install a second copy merely to make the package query succeed.
The service remains after package removal
Run systemctl status anydesk, systemctl cat anydesk, and systemctl is-enabled anydesk. Identify whether the unit is a leftover local file, a custom deployment, or a package that was not actually removed. Preserve it first when access is suspicious, then remove it through the owner or approved change process.
The process returns after being stopped
Find the executable and parent process, then inspect systemd, user services, desktop autostart, timers, cron, and management software. Automatic recreation usually indicates another launch mechanism; deleting the binary alone is not a reliable fix.

You cannot change Security settings
Installed clients require administrative privileges for those settings. Sign in through an authorized administrative path or ask the system owner to make the change. Do not bypass controls by editing unknown files while an incident investigation is active.
You found no history
History may be unavailable because of retention, configuration, version differences, cleanup, or incomplete logging. Correlate every remaining source and report the conclusion narrowly: current evidence may be insufficient to establish whether a session occurred.
What a successful cleanup can and cannot establish
After a verified package removal, no matching process, and no active or enabled anydesk service, you can say that the known installation is not currently running through those checked paths. If a custom executable or management deployment remains, that conclusion is incomplete.
You cannot say that no one connected previously, that no credentials were copied, or that the machine is otherwise uncompromised. Historical access requires retained application and operating-system evidence, and the available records may not be complete. Keep that distinction in any incident report and use qualified language about what was observed, when it was observed, and which checks were performed.
