If the stripped screw head sticks above the surface, locking or vise-grip pliers can usually remove it: clamp the jaws tightly on the head’s sides, gently rock the screw right and left to break it loose, then turn it out. If the head is flush, recessed, or too damaged for the jaws to grip, pliers are the wrong tool; use a correctly sized manual screwdriver if any recess remains, or a screw extractor.
What “stripped screw” means—and when pliers can help
A stripped screw has a damaged drive recess—the cross, star, hex, or other socket where the driver engages. The driver can no longer transmit enough turning force without slipping. That is different from stripped threads, where the screw may turn but no longer holds material securely. Pliers address the first problem only when they can grip the outside of the screw head.
The deciding factor is access. A screw head that projects above the work surface gives plier jaws an outside edge to clamp. A head that is flush with, below, or surrounded by a narrow recess does not provide that edge. The Home Depot’s guide states: “If enough of the screw is above the surface, try using pliers.” Its guide was last updated May 6, 2025. McCoy’s Building Supply and This Old House give the same practical limitation: locking pliers are for a protruding head, not an inaccessible one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Exposed head: external gripping with locking pliers is the most direct option.
- Partly damaged recess: a correctly sized manual screwdriver may still work before you escalate.
- Flush or recessed head: use a screw extractor or another method that creates engagement from the center.
Do not keep forcing a driver or pliers that are slipping. Each slip can round the head further, mark the surrounding surface, or injure your hand when the tool suddenly releases.

Tools and preparation
Gather the tools that match the screw’s condition rather than starting with the most aggressive method. For an exposed head, use locking pliers (often called vise-grip pliers) with jaws small enough to reach the head and large enough to clamp it firmly. Ordinary smooth-jaw pliers can work in a favorable situation, but their grip is not self-locking and is more likely to slip under torque.
- Locking or vise-grip pliers, sized so both jaws contact the screw head.
- A matching manual screwdriver, if a usable portion of the drive recess remains.
- Eye protection when the screw, bit, or surrounding material could chip.
- A screw extractor and drill, only if the head cannot be gripped and the workpiece can safely be drilled.
- A wrench for turning the extractor, as specified by the extractor instructions.
Put the workpiece on a stable surface or clamp it so it cannot move. Clean dirt, paint, or rust from around the head so the jaws can sit low and square. If the fastener is part of an energized appliance, vehicle system, or other hazardous assembly, disconnect power and follow the equipment maker’s service procedure before touching it.
How to remove an exposed stripped screw with locking pliers
1. Confirm that the jaws can reach the head
Look at the screw from the side. You need enough metal above the surface for both jaws to contact the head’s sides. The jaws should be able to close around the screw without bearing heavily on the surrounding material. If the head is level with the surface, buried in a counterbore, or hidden by a washer or bracket, stop and choose a different method; tightening pliers against the workpiece can damage it without turning the screw.
2. Set the pliers for a firm lock
Open the pliers and adjust the locking screw so the jaws close around the head with strong pressure. The exact adjustment depends on the tool, but the locked position should hold the head without requiring you to keep squeezing the handles. If the jaws close completely with no resistance, open the adjustment slightly. If they cannot close around the head, reduce the adjustment or use a smaller pair.

3. Clamp the sides, not the damaged recess
Place the jaws on opposite outside faces of the screw head. Keep them as low as practical while still clearing the work surface. A low grip reduces the chance that the head will shear and gives the turning force a shorter path to the threads. Check that the jaw faces are parallel to the head rather than perched on one corner. Lock the handles and test the clamp with a light hand movement before applying torque.
4. Break the fastener loose with short, gentle movements
Turn the pliers in the direction that backs the screw out, normally counterclockwise when viewed from the head. Instead of making one forceful pull, apply a small movement to the left and then a small movement back to the right. This gentle rocking can break initial friction or corrosion without loading the jaws so abruptly that they slip. Once the head moves, continue with controlled turns in the loosening direction.
5. Reposition if the grip changes
As the screw rises, the head may tilt or the jaws may no longer sit squarely. Stop, unlock the pliers, and reset them rather than twisting through a poor grip. Keep the jaws on the screw, not on the surrounding surface. If the head begins to deform under the jaws, further force is likely to make removal harder; move to an extractor or a professional repair approach.

Which pliers work best?
| Tool | Best use | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Locking (vise-grip) pliers | Protruding head that can be clamped from both sides | Cannot grip a flush or recessed head; excessive force can deform the head or mark the surface |
| Ordinary slip-joint or combination pliers | Lightly stuck screw with a clean, accessible head | Hand pressure is not self-locking, so the jaws can slip as torque rises |
| Long-nose pliers | Narrow access around a small exposed head | Thin jaws provide less clamping area and can twist off a damaged head |
| Screw-extraction pliers | Specialized external grip when their jaw shape fits the exposed head | Still require enough exposed metal; availability and design vary |
Locking pliers are the general recommendation because their clamping force remains engaged while you turn. Select the smallest tool that gives full contact without touching the workpiece. A larger pair is not automatically better: its jaws may sit too high or foul nearby parts.
What to do when the pliers slip
Check the jaw position
Unlock the tool and look for shiny marks or flattened areas where the jaws contacted the head. Reposition on undamaged sides and clamp lower. If only one corner is being held, the tool is not aligned for reliable torque.
Clean the contact surfaces
Oil, paint, rust scale, or sawdust can act as a lubricant between the jaws and the head. Brush the head clean and wipe the jaws. Do not add oil to a joint merely to make the pliers slide; lubrication belongs on the screw threads or interface only when it is appropriate for the workpiece and the fastener.

Reduce force instead of increasing it
A slipping tool is a warning, not an invitation to pull harder. Use short rocking movements and keep your hand out of the line of a possible release. If the jaws still slip after a careful reset, the exposed head may be too small or too damaged for this method.

Protect the surrounding surface
Place a thin protective layer near—but not under—the jaws if the finish is easily scratched, while keeping the pliers’ contact with the screw unobstructed. Do not wedge a soft material between the jaws and the head; it can reduce grip and make a sudden slip more likely.

Try a correctly sized manual screwdriver first
If some of the original recess remains, choose a manual driver whose tip matches the screw exactly and seats fully. This Old House recommends trying a matching manual screwdriver before escalating to an extractor. A hand tool lets you control downward pressure and feel whether the tip is engaging. Keep the driver aligned with the screw axis and apply steady pressure while turning slowly. Stop as soon as the tip cams out; repeated attempts can destroy the remaining recess.
Use a screw extractor when there is no usable grip
A screw extractor creates its own engagement in the fastener. Extractor designs differ, so follow the instructions supplied with the particular set. BLACK+DECKER’s support guidance, dated September 27, 2022, specifies that the pilot-hole size comes from the extractor instructions, then directs the user to insert the extractor and turn it left with a wrench.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Center-punch or otherwise mark the middle of the damaged screw so the drill does not wander onto the surrounding material.
- Drill the pilot hole to the extractor’s specified diameter and depth. Use the speed, lubrication, and depth limits required for the workpiece and extractor.
- Insert the extractor into the pilot hole as instructed. Keep it aligned with the screw.
- Turn the extractor counterclockwise (left) with the specified wrench. The extractor’s bite should transfer that rotation to the screw.
- Stop if the extractor slips, breaks, or begins enlarging the hole unpredictably. A broken extractor is difficult to drill and can cause more damage than the original screw.
Drilling is not risk-free. A wandering bit can scar the workpiece, enlarge a threaded hole, or damage components behind the fastener. Use an extractor only when the material, access, and hole depth make drilling appropriate. For a precision part, expensive finish, hardened fastener, or hidden assembly, a repair professional may be safer than improvising.

Consider a new drive slot only when the material allows it
McCoy’s Building Supply lists creating a new slot as another alternative to plier removal. That approach requires a cutting tool and enough head surface to make a slot without contacting the workpiece. It is unsuitable where sparks, heat, dust, or a visible cosmetic mark are unacceptable. Because the exact cutting method depends on the fastener and material, treat it as a separate repair decision rather than an extension of the pliers technique.
Choose the method by access and remaining engagement
| Condition | First choice | Why | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head clearly protrudes; sides are intact | Locking pliers | External jaws bypass the damaged recess | Jaw slip or head deformation if clamped poorly |
| Head protrudes only slightly; recess still partly usable | Matching manual screwdriver, then locking pliers if an edge can be reached | Uses existing engagement without drilling | Further cam-out can worsen the recess |
| Head flush or below surface | Screw extractor, following its pilot-hole instructions | Creates a new internal grip | Drilling can damage the fastener or surrounding material |
| Nearby finish or component is fragile | Least-invasive method or professional service | Limits collateral damage | Slower or may require disassembly |
No universal success rate or time estimate has been established for these household methods. Results depend on the screw’s material, corrosion, size, installation torque, access, and the workpiece.
Stripped drive versus stripped threads
If the screwdriver recess is damaged but the threads are sound, removal is the objective described above. If the screw turns freely without rising, the threads may be stripped in the screw, the receiving material, or both. Pliers can sometimes pull while you turn an exposed head, but that is a different repair and may enlarge the hole. Once the screw is out, inspect the threads and the receiving hole before selecting a replacement fastener or a thread-repair method.
After removal: prevent another stripped head
- Use the driver size and profile specified for the screw; a nearly matching bit concentrates force on the recess edges.
- Seat the bit fully and keep it straight while turning.
- Apply firm downward pressure with a manual driver when starting a stubborn fastener, but stop if the bit begins to cam out.
- Replace screws with damaged recesses instead of reinstalling them.
- Use the correct pilot hole and torque for the material and fastener so the head is not over-stressed during installation.
- Keep tools and screw heads free of grit, paint, and oil that can reduce engagement.
The central rule is simple: use pliers only when the head gives the jaws a solid external purchase. Once that purchase disappears, stop forcing the tool and switch to the least-damaging method that fits the access and the workpiece.
