Back up your save or world, disable the suspected graphics mod through the game’s supported mod manager, then retest before uninstalling it or deleting files. This isolates the cause while reducing the risk of losing progress. If the game still crashes with mods disabled, switch to troubleshooting the game itself rather than assuming the mod is still responsible.
Before removing a graphics mod, protect your save
Make a separate backup of the save, world, or campaign before changing mods. A modded save may rely on content or settings supplied by a mod; removing it can make that save fail to load or require you to continue from an unmodded save or start a new game. Bethesda advises Skyrim players to keep unmodded saves available, and SEGA warns that a Total War campaign can depend on mods. Minecraft Help likewise recommends backing up a world before disabling Bedrock add-ons.
Use the game’s backup or save-management feature if it has one. Otherwise, follow the publisher’s instructions for locating and copying saves for that specific game. Do not assume a folder that contains mods contains only disposable files: it may also hold saves or configuration. The right location and backup procedure differ by game and platform.

Keep the backup separate from the files you are about to change, and make sure you can distinguish it from your current save. If the game offers unmodded saves, retain those rather than overwriting them during testing. A backup gives you a way back if the save depends on the mod; it does not guarantee that a save created or played with the mod will work correctly after the mod is removed.

Disable the mod first, then test
Disabling is a diagnostic step: it lets you check whether the symptom changes without immediately deleting downloaded files. Use the game’s own mod menu, launcher, or platform content manager when available. Bethesda recommends disabling or removing installed mods while troubleshooting Skyrim crashes or black screens; Larian recommends unchecking installed mods to see whether a Baldur’s Gate 3 issue persists.
- Record what changed. Note the game version, the mod’s name, when you installed or updated it, and the symptoms—such as a black screen, a crash on launch, missing textures, or a shader error. This gives you a baseline for the retest and useful details if you need to contact the author or support.
- Back up the affected save or world. Keep the backup separate from the files you plan to change, and do not overwrite your only working unmodded save.
- Open the game’s supported mod interface. Look for the installed-mod or add-on list in the game, launcher, or platform content manager. Select the suspected graphics mod and choose the available disable or deactivate action. Labels vary, so use the game’s official instructions rather than assuming a particular menu path.
- Restart if the game requires it. Some mod changes do not take effect until you close and relaunch the game. Follow the game’s prompt or instructions.
- Retest under comparable conditions. Reopen the same save only if it is safe to do so; otherwise use a separate test save or a new session. Check whether the original crash or visual problem is gone. Avoid changing graphics settings or other mods during this first test, so you can tell what disabling this mod changed.
Try to reproduce the same symptom you initially saw, rather than judging from a different menu or scene. If the game crashed while loading a particular save, test that behavior only if you have a backup and the game’s guidance makes it safe; otherwise use a separate session. Record whether the game launches, whether the visual glitch appears, and whether the result changes after the restart. These observations help separate a mod-related symptom from an unrelated issue that happens at a different point in the game.
If the game works normally with the mod disabled, that is evidence the mod—or its interaction with the current game setup—may be involved, but it does not prove the mod alone is defective. A game update, a dependency, or a conflict with another mod can also affect compatibility. Bethesda notes that Skyrim mods may stop working after a game update until their creators update them; Larian also identifies updates, dependencies, and conflicts as factors in mod issues.
When you have several possible culprit mods
Change one variable at a time. If multiple graphics mods are enabled, disable one suspected mod, retest, and record the result before testing another. For Minecraft Bedrock, Minecraft Help specifically recommends disabling resource packs and/or behavior packs individually to identify a problematic add-on, after backing up the world.
Compare candidates by whether disabling each one changes the symptom, whether it was updated for the installed game version, whether it depends on or conflicts with another mod, and whether the active save may rely on it. If you disable several mods at once and the problem disappears, you will know the cause is somewhere in that group but not which mod or interaction was responsible. Once you have identified a likely cause, re-enable unrelated mods only if the game and save can safely support that test.
When more than one mod is plausible, a useful comparison is the change in symptoms after each individual disable test. If the black screen disappears with one mod disabled but returns when it is enabled again, that is useful evidence to report to the author; it still may reflect a conflict or version mismatch rather than a defect in that mod by itself. Avoid testing combinations on your only copy of a modded save. If you cannot safely load that save without its existing setup, prioritize the backup and use a separate test session rather than risking progress to prove causation.

Also check whether the game recently updated and whether the mod’s author or the game’s official mod interface indicates compatibility with the installed version. A graphics mod can appear to be the cause when it is actually incompatible with a recent game update or another mod it depends on. Keep the game version, mod version if shown, and the exact test result together; those details make a report more useful than saying only that the game looks wrong.

If disabling the mod fixes the problem
Remove or unsubscribe from the mod through the same supported interface you used to disable it. Disabling does not necessarily uninstall downloaded content, and unsubscribing does not always remove every related file. SEGA documents leftover mod-related files in its Total War setup even after unsubscribing, and provides title-specific cleanup guidance. Use that guidance for the relevant game; do not apply its folder locations to another title.
If the mod came from a third-party manager or was installed manually, consult the mod’s and game’s official removal instructions before deleting anything. Do not use a blanket instruction to erase a Mods, Addons, Workshop, or profile folder: locations vary, and those directories can contain other mods or user data. Preserve a copy of files you may need to restore, and avoid touching saves or configuration unless the game’s instructions specifically say to do so.
Think of disabling and removing as different operations. Disabling tests whether the game behaves differently when the manager stops activating a mod; it may leave the downloaded files in place. Unsubscribing or uninstalling removes it through the service or manager, but a title may still have related files that require its own cleanup steps. The sequence matters: first test with the mod inactive, then remove it if that test points to it, and finally check the game’s instructions for remaining files. Manual deletion before identifying the problem can remove unrelated content or make it harder to reverse the change.
For a mod that appears to be the cause, report the game version, mod version if shown, symptom, and whether disabling it resolved the issue to its author. Bethesda specifically advises contacting the author about issues with a particular Skyrim Creation or mod. This can distinguish a compatibility problem from a broader game fault.

First confirm that the game actually launched without the mod: some managers can leave files behind, and some games load mods from more than one source. Check the title’s official instructions for residual files, but use only paths documented for that game. Larian’s guidance, for example, gives Baldur’s Gate 3-specific locations and removal advice for third-party mods, especially after a major game update. Those locations are not general instructions for other games.

If you used a launcher, Workshop, in-game catalog, or third-party manager, consider which source the title’s official instructions say controls the mod. Compare the manager or launcher involved and the platform-specific location of any leftover files; do not assume that removing a subscription clears every installed copy. A careful check is to confirm the mod is no longer active in each relevant supported interface, then consult the game’s own directions for residual files. Avoid searching for a universal folder path or deleting a whole directory simply because its name suggests it contains mods.
If the game’s files may have been altered, use the platform’s official file-verification feature when supported. Bethesda and SEGA both document Steam file verification in their game-specific troubleshooting or cleanup guidance. Verification checks or restores game files according to the platform’s process; it is not a substitute for backing up saves or following the game’s instructions about mod files.
When the issue persists after mods are disabled and the documented cleanup steps are complete, treat it as a game-level problem. Follow the publisher’s troubleshooting for your title and platform, then contact official support if needed. For Skyrim on PC, Bethesda’s crash and black-screen guidance includes separate checks for system requirements, GPU drivers and selection, graphics settings, launch options, and Steam file verification. It also describes clean reinstallation as a later option if crashes continue after mod removal, and advises preserving the existing game folder and saves first.

This is the point to stop treating the graphics mod as the only explanation. Use the troubleshooting page for the game you are actually playing: GPU selection, launch options, drivers, requirements, and verification steps are title- or platform-specific, not interchangeable fixes. If you have already disabled the suspected mod and followed that game’s cleanup guidance, include those steps and the results when you contact support.
What to do if a save or world will not load afterward
Do not repeatedly overwrite the affected save while troubleshooting. Restore the backup you made before changing mods, or consult the game or mod author about whether the save depends on the removed content. Minecraft’s backup advice applies to worlds with Bedrock add-ons; Bethesda and SEGA both caution that modded saves or campaigns may not be independent of their mods. Depending on the game, you may need to load an unmodded save or begin a new game rather than continue the modified one.
If the save crashes only when a specific Creation or mod is installed, Bethesda recommends uninstalling the recently installed item and reloading to test the connection. Keep an unmodded save available so you can recover without relying on a save that was created or changed with the mod active.

A failed load after removal does not necessarily mean the game installation is damaged. It may mean the save expects content or settings supplied by the removed mod. Preserve the affected save, avoid saving over it during repeated tests, and use the backup or the game’s save-recovery guidance. If the publisher or mod author confirms that the save depends on the mod, you may need to restore that setup to access the campaign, use an unmodded save, or begin a new one. Use the outcome to decide whether you are dealing with mod isolation, mod cleanup, save compatibility, or a broader game fault. If disabling one mod changes nothing, that result is still useful: it means you should not jump straight to deleting other files or reinstalling. If disabling it fixes the symptom, remove it using the supported route and preserve the information needed to report a possible compatibility problem. If the game still fails, shift to its official troubleshooting instead of repeating the same removal step.
When a clean reinstall is appropriate
A reinstall is a later troubleshooting option, not the first response to a visual glitch. Before doing one, make independent backups of saves and any game-specific folders the publisher tells you to preserve. Reinstall steps differ by title and platform, and a reinstall may not remove user-created files stored outside the main game directory. Bethesda’s Skyrim PC guidance places a clean reinstall after mod removal when crashes continue and advises preserving the existing game folder and saves. For other games, follow their own support instructions.
Paradox’s Cities: Skylines guidance likewise calls for backing up the Addons folder and moving saves before a full reinstall. Treat those as title-specific precautions, not universal folder directions. A reinstall may be reasonable only after you have tested without the suspected mods, checked the relevant publisher’s cleanup steps, and followed the game’s troubleshooting for continuing crashes. Do not start by deleting folders wholesale: you may erase content or saves you meant to preserve, and a reinstall alone may not address files stored elsewhere.

What if the game is still crashing after I remove or disable all mods?
Confirm the game is launching without mods and check the title’s official instructions for residual files; managers and platforms differ, so do not use a folder path from another game.
