To remove a photo’s background in Canva on iOS, open the image in a design, select it, then tap BG Remover in the editor toolbar. Canva processes the photo and removes the background. The feature is included with paid plans, and Canva sets limits on eligible image files.
Remove a photo background in the Canva editor

Open Canva on your iPhone or iPad and open a design containing the photo, or add the photo to a design.

Tap the photo to select it. Find and tap BG Remover in the editor toolbar.

Wait for Canva to process the image. If the cutout needs adjustment, use the Erase and Restore brushes to refine the areas removed or retained. Canva documents these controls on its Background Remover feature page.

The toolbar label or placement can vary by app version or editing context; Canva’s Help Center instructions describe the mobile control as being in the editor toolbar.
Open the image from Projects instead
If the photo is already in Canva’s Projects, use the image-management route: go to Projects → Images, open the photo’s more menu, choose Edit image, then tap BG Remover. This route edits the image from Projects rather than first opening a design.

Save a file with a transparent background
Removing the photo’s background and exporting a design with transparency are separate steps. After removing the subject’s background, download the design as PNG and turn on Transparent background if you need the exported file itself to have transparency. Canva lists that download option for Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits plans in its transparent-background download instructions.

Check eligibility and image limits

Plan access: Canva says Background Remover is included with paid plans. If BG Remover is missing, check whether the account has an eligible plan and whether team brand controls restrict the feature. Canva’s photo editor guidance discusses feature availability and controls.

File type and size: Canva’s Help Center says Background Remover works with photos under 9 MB and is not available for vector images. Its feature page lists JPG, PNG, HEIC, and HEIF as supported photo upload formats.

Resolution: Canva says photos uploaded above 10 MP are downscaled to 10 MP after background removal.

Remove a background from a video on mobile
Canva’s mobile background-removal instructions distinguish videos from photos: upload the video through the Uploads tab rather than selecting it from Camera Roll or Gallery. The original video must be under 10 minutes. These limits and instructions are from Canva’s Help Center.
