To remap the Xbox Nano Controller’s programmable Action Button, connect and turn on the controller, open Xbox Accessories, choose Configure, create or edit a profile, select the Action Button, assign an available function, save the profile to a slot, and press the controller’s Profile button to activate it. On Windows 10 or 11, the Xbox Accessories workflow requires a compatible USB-C cable; on an Xbox console, connect the controller normally before opening the app.

What you can remap on the Xbox Nano Controller

The XBOX Nano Controller has all 18 standard gameplay inputs plus a programmable Action Button. Microsoft describes the Action Button as suitable for screenshots, gameplay capture, and other frequently used shortcuts. That makes it useful for a command you want immediately under a finger without opening an Xbox menu or reaching for a keyboard.

The controller was announced on October 14, 2026, by James Hunter, General Manager of XBOX Accessories. It is described as a little over 5 inches long and 3.5 ounces. Microsoft lists a price of $49.99, with a Microsoft Store release date of November 4, 2026. Availability and final firmware behavior can vary by region and may change after launch.

Xbox Accessories presents assignments through profiles. A profile stores the selected mapping, and the controller’s Profile button lets you activate the slot you assigned during play. The exact list of functions shown for the Nano depends on the controller firmware and the version of Xbox Accessories connected to it.

Before you start

Use the correct connection

On Xbox consoles, connect the Nano through Xbox Wireless and power it on. On compatible Windows 10 or Windows 11 PCs, tablets, iOS devices, Android devices, and Smart TVs, the controller can use Bluetooth where the device supports it. The Xbox Accessories configuration workflow on Windows requires a compatible USB-C cable, however. Bluetooth is not a substitute for that cable when the app needs to configure the controller.

The Nano has an internal rechargeable battery. A USB-C cable is required for charging and is sold separately, so have a suitable data-capable cable available rather than assuming that any charging-only lead will work.

Check the app and controller state

  • Install or update Xbox Accessories on the Xbox console or Windows device where you will configure the controller.
  • Power on the Nano before opening the app.
  • Connect the controller to the target device in the supported way. For Windows configuration, use USB-C.
  • Close games or other controller utilities that might be using the device while you create the profile.
  • Decide whether the assignment should control a game action, a capture command, or a keyboard shortcut.

How to remap the Nano Action Button

  1. Connect the controller. Pair the Nano with the Xbox console, or connect it to Windows with a compatible USB-C cable. Turn the controller on.
  2. Open Xbox Accessories. Wait for the Nano to appear as the connected controller. If it is not listed, the app cannot edit its profile yet.
  3. Select Configure. This opens the controller configuration area rather than the general device information page.
  4. Create or edit a profile. Choose the option to make a new profile if you want a separate setup, or open an existing profile to change its assignments.
  5. Select the Action Button. In the controller diagram or control list, select the programmable Action Button. If the app exposes another control for remapping, select that control instead.
  6. Choose the primary use. Select the function offered by the app. The Nano launch material specifically identifies screenshots, gameplay capture, and other frequently used shortcuts as examples.
  7. Save the profile. Store the configuration and assign it to one of the available profile slots. Saving without assigning a slot leaves you without a quick profile to activate during play.
  8. Activate the slot. Press the controller’s Profile button to cycle to or activate the slot that contains the new mapping.
  9. Test it. Use the assigned button in the game or app. Verify that the expected action occurs before relying on it in a match, stream, or recording.

The labels can change as Xbox Accessories is updated, but the sequence remains the same: connected controller, Configure, profile, control, function, save, profile activation, and test.

Assigning screenshots and gameplay capture

Screenshot shortcut

If Xbox Accessories offers a screenshot action for the Action Button, select that action in the profile and save it to a slot. After activating the slot, press the Action Button once when you want to capture the current screen. Confirm the result in the console’s captures area or the operating system’s capture destination. A game can intercept a button or temporarily disable capture features, so test in the title where you plan to use the shortcut.

Gameplay capture shortcut

For video recording, choose the gameplay-capture option exposed by the app rather than a screenshot option. Capture commands can have different behavior, such as starting a recording, stopping one, or saving the previous segment. The Nano announcement confirms capture as a supported example of the Action Button’s intended use, but it does not define a universal recording duration or destination. Check the capture settings on the Xbox or Windows device for those details.

Other frequently used shortcuts

Use a shortcut assignment when the command is available in the profile list. Keep the Action Button’s job distinct from ordinary gameplay inputs: a capture command is often more useful there than a button you press repeatedly in combat. If the desired command is not shown, it is not necessarily a fault; the available actions are controlled by the app, the controller firmware, and the connected platform.

Using profiles during play

Why profiles matter

A profile lets you keep a mapping for one purpose without overwriting another. For example, one slot can contain a screenshot assignment and another can contain a gameplay-capture assignment. The controller’s Profile button activates the slot you saved, so you do not need to reopen Xbox Accessories every time you change activities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Activating the right profile

  1. Press the Profile button on the Nano.
  2. Cycle through the available slots until the slot containing your saved mapping is active.
  3. Press the Action Button once and observe the result in a safe test location.
  4. If the old behavior remains, return to Xbox Accessories and confirm that the profile was saved and assigned to the slot you selected.

Do not assume that a profile is active merely because it was edited. Saving and slot assignment are separate parts of the workflow.

Can you map a keyboard key to the Nano?

Xbox’s detailed keyboard-key instructions are documented for the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller. Those instructions are useful for understanding Xbox Accessories profile mechanics, but they do not establish that every keyboard-mapping option is exposed on the Nano. Check the controls actually shown for the Nano in your installed app and firmware.

Where the Nano profile exposes keyboard mapping, Xbox documents one non-modifier key per controller button. Modifier combinations using Ctrl, Shift, Alt, or Win are allowed. This means a button can be associated with one ordinary key, optionally combined with a modifier, rather than an unrestricted multi-key macro.

Keyboard input is also game dependent. A title may accept keyboard controls fully, accept only some keys, or ignore them entirely. A mapping that works in a desktop application may therefore do nothing in a particular game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Important PC connection limitation

Keyboard-key mapping over Bluetooth is not supported on PC. If the feature is available for the Nano profile and you need it on Windows, use a USB connection or an Xbox Wireless Adapter. The Windows Xbox Accessories workflow already calls for a compatible USB-C cable, which is the most direct way to configure and test the assignment.

What happens if the Action Button is missing?

The controller does not appear in Xbox Accessories

  • Confirm that the Nano is powered on.
  • On Windows, replace a charging-only lead with a compatible USB-C data cable.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the cable, then reopen Xbox Accessories.
  • On Xbox, confirm that the controller is connected through the supported Xbox Wireless connection.
  • Install available updates for the app and controller before trying the profile again.

The Action Button appears but has no expected function

Open the profile and inspect the assignment list. The function you want may not be exposed for the current Nano firmware or platform. Save a different available action as a test. If the test works, the original function is unavailable rather than evidence of a defective button.

The profile saves but the old behavior remains

  1. Return to Configure and verify that the profile was saved.
  2. Check which slot contains the edited profile.
  3. Press the Profile button until that slot is active.
  4. Test outside the game’s most complicated menu, where an input may be consumed by the title.
  5. Reconnect the controller and test again.

A keyboard assignment does nothing

  • Confirm that the game accepts keyboard input. Support can be full, partial, or absent.
  • If you are on PC, stop using Bluetooth for the keyboard-mapped profile and use USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter.
  • Check that the assignment uses one non-modifier key, with only supported Ctrl, Shift, Alt, or Win combinations.
  • Test the emitted key in an application that visibly accepts keyboard input before blaming the game.

Official guidance establishes the supported app and connection requirements, but it does not provide a Nano-specific error-code procedure. If the controller still cannot be configured after these checks, record the app version, firmware state, connection type, and the point at which the profile fails before contacting Xbox support.

Remapping rules that can surprise you

Standard-controller remaps are not automatically portable

Xbox documentation distinguishes standard-controller remapping from Elite controller behavior. Standard-controller button mappings do not transfer automatically to another console. If you use the Nano with more than one Xbox, check the mapping on each console instead of assuming that a profile created on one system is present on another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Platform behavior can differ

A profile that works for a console capture command may not expose the same command on Windows. The Microsoft Store listing identifies button mapping for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11, but the available actions still depend on the connected platform and software version.

One button does not create a general macro engine

The documented keyboard rules describe a single non-modifier key per controller button, with supported modifier combinations. They should not be read as permission to build arbitrary sequences, timed macros, or multiple unrelated commands from one press.

Practical profile layouts

Capture-focused layout

Put screenshot on the Action Button and leave the standard gameplay controls unchanged. This is the simplest setup for players who frequently preserve a moment but rarely record video. Keep the slot clearly identified so you do not activate it accidentally during a different activity.

Recording-focused layout

Assign gameplay capture to the Action Button and test both the start and stop behavior before recording a live session. Check the console or Windows capture settings separately; the controller assignment triggers the command, but those settings determine where and how the recording is stored.

Desktop or accessibility shortcut layout

If the Nano firmware and Xbox Accessories expose a keyboard assignment, reserve a profile slot for that purpose. Use USB on PC, verify the key in a text field or other visible application, and then test it in the target game. This keeps a keyboard-oriented profile separate from your normal Xbox capture profile.

Battery, cable, and maintenance considerations

The Nano’s battery is internal and rechargeable rather than user-swappable. Keep a compatible USB-C cable available for charging, and remember that the cable is sold separately. A controller that powers on but repeatedly disappears from Xbox Accessories on Windows may be connected with a cable that supplies power without carrying the data needed by the app.

Because profile editing depends on both the app and controller firmware, update them before diagnosing an assignment as unavailable. After an update, reopen the profile and confirm that the Action Button still points to the intended function.

Quick verification checklist

  • The controller is powered on and visible in Xbox Accessories.
  • Windows configuration uses a compatible USB-C cable.
  • You selected Configure rather than only viewing the controller.
  • The Action Button is selected in the profile.
  • The desired function is present in the available list.
  • The profile is saved to a known slot.
  • The Profile button activates that slot.
  • The assignment is tested in the actual game or app.
  • Keyboard mapping, if used, is tested over USB or Xbox Wireless Adapter rather than Bluetooth on PC.
  • The game supports the mapped input.

Bottom line

The Nano’s extra-button remap is handled through an Xbox Accessories profile, not through an in-game menu. Connect the controller correctly, select Configure, assign the Action Button, save the profile to a slot, activate that slot with the Profile button, and test the result. Screenshot and gameplay-capture assignments are specifically identified for the Action Button. Windows users need a compatible USB-C cable for the app workflow, and anyone attempting keyboard mapping must account for the PC Bluetooth limitation and the target game’s own keyboard support.
