Short answer: Google TV does not provide a universal setting for changing every branded streaming key. On the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, you can configure the star button to open a favorite TV app, open the Google Home panel, or switch inputs. Google also documents changing the YouTube button so it opens a preferred YouTube app. Other dedicated app buttons require a third-party remapper, and compatibility depends on the exact television or streamer, remote model, software version, and app permissions.
What you can change natively
Google’s own remote settings distinguish between the configurable star button, the YouTube button, and other dedicated app keys. The star shortcut is the broadest built-in option, but it is specifically documented for the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote. It is not proof that every Google TV television or older Chromecast remote supports the same controls.
| Remote control | Built-in action documented by Google | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Star/customizable button | Open a favorite TV app, open Google Home, or display device inputs | Google TV Streamer Voice Remote |
| YouTube button | Open a preferred YouTube app | Documented as a narrow YouTube-specific choice |
| Other branded app buttons | No universal Google setting documented for arbitrary reassignment | May require third-party software, if the device supports it |
That distinction matters when a remote has Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, or another sponsored key printed on its face. A button can look like a normal shortcut while actually being handled by the remote firmware or by the television manufacturer. The presence of a star shortcut on one Google TV product does not create a general-purpose remapping menu for every other product.
Identify your Google TV hardware first
Before changing anything, identify both halves of the setup: the device running Google TV and the physical remote controlling it. The relevant combinations include a Google TV Streamer, a Chromecast with Google TV, and a television with Google TV built in. Their menus, firmware, remote layouts, and supported button events can differ.
- Look for the remote’s star or customizable button. That is the key Google documents for the built-in shortcut on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote.
- Check whether the remote has a dedicated YouTube key. Google’s separate YouTube note applies only to the preference exposed by the particular product and software version.
- Record the television or streamer model before installing a remapper. A guide written for a Chromecast remote may not apply to a television manufacturer’s remote.
- Make sure the remote is paired with the device you intend to change. A shortcut configured on one Google TV device does not automatically configure another.
This quick inventory prevents a common mistake: following instructions for the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote while using a television remote that has no customizable star key or no equivalent system menu.

How to make the star button open an app
These instructions apply to the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote’s star or customizable button. Menu wording can vary by language and region.
- Press the star/customizable button on the remote.
- When the shortcut choices appear, select the option for a favorite TV app.
- Choose the installed app you want to launch.
- Confirm the selection. Pressing the star button should now open that app.
If the button already has a shortcut and you want to replace it, press and hold the star button for one to two seconds, then choose a different shortcut. The short press and the press-and-hold behavior are useful to remember: a brief press tests the saved shortcut, while holding it opens the editing choice on supported remotes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the settings menu instead
You can also edit the shortcut from the Google TV settings:
- Open All Settings.
- Select Remotes & Accessories.
- Choose Set up remote buttons.
- Select Customizable button.
- Choose a favorite TV app and complete the on-screen confirmation.
The available choices can include a favorite app, Google Home, or device inputs. If you select inputs, follow the on-screen setup and confirm the input that the button should switch to. The input option is useful when the star key is more valuable as a quick way to reach a game console, disc player, or another HDMI source than as an app launcher.
If you do not see Set up remote buttons, check that you are using the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote rather than a different Google TV remote; the feature is hardware- and software-specific. Do not assume that a missing menu can be fixed by reinstalling an app. The native shortcut is supplied by the Google TV device and its paired remote, not by the streaming apps themselves.
How to configure the YouTube button
Google’s remote overview separately notes that the YouTube button can open a preferred YouTube app. This is a limited, documented remapping choice. It should not be interpreted as a general control for changing every branded key to any app.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open the Google TV remote or device settings where the YouTube-button preference is offered.
- Choose the preferred YouTube app from the available choices.
- Save the selection and press the YouTube button to test it.
The exact screen can differ between Google TV products and software releases. If no YouTube preference appears, your model or current software may not expose that option. An installed YouTube-related app also may not be offered if the system does not recognize it as an eligible choice. In that situation, use the launcher or a third-party remapper only if your device and the app support it.

Why Netflix, Prime Video, or another sponsored key may not change
Dedicated branded keys are usually wired to a command that the remote firmware sends when pressed. Google’s documented star-button and YouTube options do not establish a system-wide remapping layer for every other key. A television maker can also ship a different remote layout or restrict which key events its software accepts.
That creates several common situations:
- The star button is configurable, but a branded key is not exposed in Google TV settings.
- A shortcut works on the Google TV Streamer but is absent on a television with Google TV built in.
- The same app appears in the launcher but is not offered as a shortcut target.
- A remapper detects a press but cannot intercept it before the manufacturer’s default action runs.
- An update changes button behavior or accessibility permissions.
- A key responds only to a long press or double press in the remapper, while a normal press continues to launch the sponsored service.
- The remote sends a manufacturer-specific event that Android does not expose as a standard button code.
These are compatibility limitations, not necessarily setup mistakes. Identify the exact remote and device before assuming that a guide written for another Google TV product applies to yours. A third-party app’s claim of Android TV or Google TV support describes the developer’s tested target categories; it does not guarantee support for every television, streamer, firmware build, or branded remote.
Using a third-party remapping app
If the native options do not cover the key you want, a third-party app may be able to map supported remote presses to installed apps, a launcher, or a system setting. Button Mapper TV Quick Actions describes this capability in its Google Play listing and says it uses Android’s accessibility service to detect button presses. The listing claims support for Android TV and Google TV, but that is the developer’s description rather than a guarantee from Google for every device.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchAnother listing, FOBB: TV Remote Button Mapper, describes disabling unwanted buttons for free and enabling custom-app remapping as a paid feature. It names Chromecast with Google TV among supported device categories, but the listing does not establish that every Chromecast, television, or remote model will work, nor that all features are available without payment. Treat both apps as options to evaluate, not as universal fixes or Google-endorsed products.
Pricing and feature gates can change. A function that is free in one version may be limited to a paid tier later, and a button that works on one model may fail on another. Check the current Play Store listing on the device itself rather than relying on an old walkthrough, a cached price, or a package downloaded from an unrelated website.
Check compatibility before installing
- On the Google TV device, open the Play Store and search for the exact app name.
- Confirm that the app is offered for your device. If it does not appear, do not sideload a random package merely to force compatibility.
- Read the current listing for supported device categories, pricing, and any limits on free features.
- Note the developer’s explanation of accessibility access and decide whether the permission is appropriate for your household.
- Record your current remote behavior so you can undo the mapping if an essential key stops working.
- Check whether the desired action is included in the free tier or requires a purchase before spending time configuring it.
Typical setup flow for a remapper
Names differ by app, but the process generally follows this pattern:
- Install the remapper from the Google Play Store.
- Open the app and read the requested accessibility-service explanation.
- Go to the device’s accessibility settings when prompted and enable the service for the remapper.
- Return to the app and use its button-detection screen to press the key you want to configure.
- Choose an action such as launching an installed app, opening a launcher, or invoking a supported system setting.
- Save the mapping and test it from the home screen and inside an app.
A remapper may offer single-press, double-press, or long-press actions, but do not assume that every mode works on your remote. Test each gesture separately. Test the original sponsored action as well, because some mappings affect only one gesture and leave another gesture untouched.
Start with one low-risk sponsored key and one simple action, such as opening an already installed app. Avoid changing several buttons at once. If something fails, a single change is easier to identify and remove than a collection of overlapping mappings.
Accessibility permission and privacy considerations
An accessibility service can observe button events so the app can react to them. That permission is why a remapper can do more than an ordinary launcher shortcut, but it also gives the app privileged access to interaction events. Read the permission screen and the app’s current Play Store disclosure before enabling it.

- Do not enable multiple remappers at the same time unless you understand which service will receive each event.
- Disable the accessibility service if you uninstall the app or no longer use its mappings.
- Review whether a paid feature is required for the specific button or action you want.
- Explain the permission to other household members, especially if the device is shared or used by children.
Accessibility access is not the same as a normal app shortcut permission. If the app’s behavior or requested access changes after an update, pause and review the new disclosure before continuing. If you decide the permission is too broad, turn off the service and return to the native star or YouTube options.
Protect navigation, volume, power, and voice controls
Changing an app key is relatively low risk; changing a control used to operate the device can make the remote difficult to recover. An older Chromecast with Google TV walkthrough about Button Mapper specifically cautions against remapping important navigation and volume keys. That guidance is supplementary rather than a current, universal procedure, because app and system versions change.
Keep these controls at their defaults unless you have a recovery plan:
- Directional pad and select/OK
- Back and Home
- Volume up, volume down, and mute
- Power and input
- Voice-assistant button
If you experiment with one of them, create only one mapping at a time, test it immediately, and keep a second control method available, such as the Google TV mobile remote or the original physical remote. Do not test a risky mapping immediately before handing the remote to someone who needs reliable volume or power control.
Native settings or a remapper: which approach fits?
| Consideration | Google’s built-in settings | Third-party remapper |
|---|---|---|
| Supported buttons | Star button on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote; YouTube-specific choice where offered | Only buttons the app and device can detect |
| Possible actions | Favorite app, Google Home, device inputs, or preferred YouTube app | May include installed apps, launchers, and system settings |
| Compatibility | Defined by the particular Google TV product, remote, and software | Must be checked for the exact model and current app version |
| Permissions | No separate remapper accessibility service | Typically requires accessibility access to see button presses |
| Cost | Included where the feature is supported | Depends on the app; some functions may be free and others paid |
| Reliability after updates | Controlled by Google’s system implementation | Can change when Google TV, the remote firmware, or the app is updated |
Use the built-in shortcut whenever it meets your goal. Consider a remapper only when the required key is not supported natively and you accept the permission, payment, and compatibility trade-offs. If your main goal is simply faster access to an app, the native star shortcut is usually the least complicated path on supported hardware.
Troubleshooting a remap that does not work
The customizable button menu is missing
- Verify that the remote is a Google TV Streamer Voice Remote with a star/customizable button.
- Open All Settings → Remotes & Accessories and look for Set up remote buttons.
- Restart the streamer and check for system updates.
- Confirm that the remote is paired with the intended Google TV device.
- Check whether you are looking at a television’s settings instead of the Google TV Streamer’s settings.
The shortcut opens the wrong app or input
- Press and hold the star button for one to two seconds and select the shortcut again.
- For an input shortcut, repeat the on-screen input setup and select the correct HDMI or device source.
- Make sure the desired app is installed on that Google TV device, not only on another television or phone.
- Test the shortcut from the home screen so an app-specific key handler does not confuse the result.
The remapper sees no button press
- Confirm that its accessibility service is enabled in the device settings.
- Reopen the app and use its detection screen rather than typing a button name manually.
- Try a different supported key; some manufacturer-specific buttons cannot be intercepted.
- Check the current Play Store listing for device restrictions or a required premium feature.
- Restart the device after enabling accessibility if the app instructs you to do so.
The default branded action still happens
- The key may be handled at firmware level before Android receives it.
- The app may support only long-press or double-press detection for that remote.
- Disable other remapping or accessibility tools that could be competing for the same event.
- Remove the mapping and restore the original behavior if interception is inconsistent.
A navigation or volume key became unreliable
- Open the remapper and delete the custom action for that key.
- Turn off its accessibility service temporarily.
- Restart Google TV and test the physical remote again.
- If necessary, uninstall the remapper and pair the remote again through Settings → Remotes & Accessories.
What to check before following any guide
- Device: Is it a Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV, or a television with Google TV built in?
- Remote: Does it have a star/customizable button, a YouTube button, or a manufacturer-specific branded layout?
- Software: Are Google TV and the remote firmware current?
- Target: Do you want an app shortcut, an input switch, Google Home, or a replacement for a sponsored key?
- Recovery: Can you undo the change without losing navigation, volume, power, or voice control?
- Permissions and price: Does the third-party app require accessibility access or a paid feature for your intended mapping?
- Source of the instructions: Are you following Google’s current support steps or an older third-party walkthrough whose menus may have changed?
Frequently asked questions
Can I change the Netflix button to another app?
Google does not document a universal setting for replacing every branded button. A third-party remapper may detect and change it on a compatible device, but the result depends on the exact remote, television or streamer, software version, and app support. A remapper may also leave the original Netflix action in place for some press types.

Can the star button switch HDMI inputs?
Yes, the documented customizable-button choices include device inputs. Select the input option, follow the on-screen setup, and confirm the desired source. This capability is tied to the supported Google TV Streamer remote rather than every Google TV remote.
Can I remap the YouTube button to Netflix?
Google documents the YouTube button as opening a preferred YouTube app, not as a general shortcut to any installed app. If the setting on your device offers only YouTube choices, it cannot natively be changed to Netflix. A third-party remapper is a separate, device-dependent possibility.
Is Button Mapper TV Quick Actions guaranteed to work?
No. Its Google Play listing describes Android TV and Google TV support and accessibility-based button detection, but that developer claim is not a guarantee for every model or remote. Confirm that the listing appears in your device’s Play Store and test a low-risk key before changing an important control.
Is FOBB free?
Its listing describes disabling unwanted buttons for free and custom-app remapping as a paid feature. Check the current listing for the price and the exact function you need, because feature access and pricing can change.
Will a system update undo my remapping?
It may affect behavior. Google TV, remote firmware, or the remapper can change how a key event is exposed, how accessibility access works, or which actions are intercepted. After an update, test the mapped key and all essential controls, and be prepared to remove the mapping if it becomes unreliable.
What should I do if I cannot recover the remote?
Delete the custom action in the remapper, turn off its accessibility service, restart Google TV, and test the physical remote. If needed, uninstall the remapper and pair the remote again through Settings → Remotes & Accessories. Keeping a second control method available makes recovery easier.
Bottom line for sponsored-button remapping
There is no documented, universal Google TV switch that turns every sponsored remote button into an arbitrary shortcut. The dependable built-in route is the star button on the Google TV Streamer Voice Remote, which can launch a favorite app, open Google Home, or switch inputs. Google also documents a separate YouTube preference. For other keys, a remapper such as Button Mapper TV Quick Actions or another compatible app may work, but treat compatibility and feature claims as device- and developer-specific. Check the exact hardware, Play Store availability, accessibility permission, current pricing, and recovery options before changing a key.
