For an otherwise healthy adult with short-term constipation and no warning signs, start with food-based fiber, enough liquids to let that fiber work, gentle activity, and a relaxed toilet routine. Try sitting on the toilet for 15–45 minutes after breakfast, keep your feet on a low stool so your knees are higher than your hips, and respond when you feel the urge. These measures are safe for many people, but they are not an instant cure: the NHS says improvement may take a few days and sometimes a few weeks.

If these steps do not help, a pharmacist can help you choose a short-term laxative. Do not self-treat if you have severe or persistent symptoms, or any sign that constipation could be caused by bleeding, obstruction, infection, or another serious illness.

First, make sure home treatment is appropriate

Constipation commonly means stools are hard, difficult to pass, or less frequent than usual. The self-care steps below are intended for adults with uncomplicated, short-term symptoms. They do not diagnose the cause, and they are not a dosing guide for children.

  • Bleeding from the rectum or blood in the stool
  • Constant or severe abdominal pain
  • Inability to pass gas
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Lower back pain
  • Unexplained weight loss

These warning signs are identified by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). An inability to pass gas together with worsening pain or vomiting can indicate a blockage and needs prompt assessment.

A practical home plan for the next day

1. Increase fiber gradually

Fiber helps add bulk and softness to stool, but increasing it abruptly can cause gas and bloating. Add high-fiber foods in small increments over several days instead of trying to reach the full target at once. NIDDK gives adults a general target of 22–34 grams of fiber per day, depending on age and sex. That figure comes from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2015–2020 and was cited on an NIDDK page last reviewed in 2018.

Useful food sources include:

  • Whole-grain breads, cereals, brown rice, and other whole grains
  • Lentils, beans, and peas
  • Berries and apples eaten with the skin when comfortable
  • Vegetables
  • Nuts

Spread these foods across meals. If your usual diet is low in fiber, adding one serving at a time is more comfortable than making several large changes in a single meal. For example, you might choose a whole-grain breakfast, add beans or lentils at lunch, and include a vegetable or fruit serving at dinner. The goal is a steady pattern rather than one unusually large “catch-up” dose.

Pay attention to how your body responds. Some people notice more gas while their digestive system adjusts. That is a reason to slow the increase, not to abandon fiber altogether. If pain becomes constant, vomiting starts, or you cannot pass gas, stop treating the problem as routine constipation and seek urgent care.

2. Drink liquids with the extra fiber

Liquids help fiber work more effectively. Have water or another suitable liquid with high-fiber meals and whenever you use a fiber supplement. NIDDK advises drinking plenty of liquids but does not set one universal water amount. Your needs vary with body size, activity, climate, diet, and health conditions.

Do not force extra fluids if a clinician has prescribed a fluid restriction or if you have a condition that affects fluid or salt balance. Ask a clinician or pharmacist how to increase fiber safely in that situation. Likewise, do not assume that drinking a very large volume will produce rapid relief; the useful approach is adequate fluid paired with gradual fiber.

3. Move your body

Regular physical activity can support bowel movement. A daily walk or run is the specific example given by the NHS; choose an activity that is safe for your fitness level and medical conditions. Even a short walk can be a practical way to add movement when you have been sitting for much of the day.

Build movement into the day rather than waiting for a dramatic workout to “flush out” constipation. A walk after a meal, light activity during a break, or another routine you can repeat is more practical than overexertion. Stop and seek advice if activity causes significant pain, dizziness, or other concerning symptoms.

4. Use a predictable toilet time

Your bowel may be more active after eating. NIDDK suggests trying to have a bowel movement 15–45 minutes after breakfast. Sit long enough to relax, but do not strain or remain on the toilet indefinitely. A regular time each day can help you notice and respond to your body’s pattern.

Go when you feel the urge instead of repeatedly postponing it. Ignoring the urge can allow stool to become drier and harder to pass. Keep the routine unhurried: gather what you need beforehand, allow privacy, and focus on relaxing rather than forcing. If nothing happens, get up and try again at another appropriate time instead of repeatedly straining.

5. Adjust your position

The NHS suggests placing your feet on a low stool while on the toilet and raising your knees above your hips. This position can make it easier to relax the pelvic muscles and pass stool without forceful straining. The stool should be stable; do not use an unsafe object that could tip. Combine the position with the post-breakfast routine and a willingness to stop if you feel pain.

6. Check whether a medicine may be contributing

Some medicines and supplements can cause constipation. If symptoms began after starting or changing a medicine, ask a health professional about it. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or alter its dose on your own; the safer solution may be a dose adjustment, a different medicine, or a separate treatment for constipation.

When you speak with a pharmacist or clinician, bring the names and doses of prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements. Mention when the constipation began and whether the change followed a new product. This prevents accidental duplication and helps the professional decide whether self-care is appropriate.

When an over-the-counter laxative may be reasonable

If food, fluids, activity, and a toilet routine are not helping, ask a pharmacist to recommend an option suited to your symptoms, medicines, age, and health history. NIDDK lists several over-the-counter classes. The examples below describe what each class is generally intended to do, not a personal recommendation or a ranking of which product is best.

Laxative class Typical role Important safety points
Fiber supplement Adds bulk and retains water in stool Increase gradually and take with sufficient liquid. It may be unsuitable without professional advice if obstruction is possible or fluid intake is restricted. NIDDK gives Metamucil as an example of this class.
Osmotic agent Draws water into the bowel to soften stool Follow the product label and ask a pharmacist about interactions, kidney or heart disease, and fluid or electrolyte restrictions. MiraLAX is an example named by NIDDK.
Stool softener Helps water mix with stool Use only as directed; a pharmacist can tell you whether it fits your situation and whether another class is more appropriate. Docusate, also sold as Colace, is an example listed by NIDDK.
Lubricant Coats stool to help it pass Professional advice is important because improper or prolonged use can cause complications, and it is not suitable for every person. Mineral oil is an example named by NIDDK.
Stimulant Stimulates bowel contractions NIDDK says to reserve stimulants for severe constipation or when other treatments have not worked, unless a health professional advises otherwise. Dulcolax is an example listed by NIDDK.

The brand names above are examples in NIDDK guidance, not endorsements and not instructions to choose a particular product. Products and labels differ by country. Compare the class, label directions, warnings, expected time to effect, and maximum duration, then confirm the choice with a pharmacist when there is any uncertainty.

The NHS says most laxatives work within three days and should be used for a short time. The exact onset depends on the product and the person, so read the current package directions rather than assuming that a particular class will work immediately. A laxative that has not worked within the label’s stated period is not a reason to keep taking extra doses; ask a professional instead.

Rules for safer laxative use

  1. Ask first when the cause is unclear. A pharmacist can screen for warning symptoms, medicine interactions, pregnancy, chronic illness, and duplicate ingredients.
  2. Follow the local label. Use the stated dose, preparation method, and maximum duration. Do not combine several laxatives unless a clinician tells you to.
  3. Do not use laxatives as a long-term daily fix without review. MedlinePlus advises consulting a provider if you need a laxative for more than one week.
  4. Do not take one for severe stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting. MedlinePlus specifically advises against laxative use in that situation until you have medical advice.
  5. Keep liquids and fiber instructions together. Fiber products need adequate liquid to work properly and may worsen discomfort if taken dry or with too little fluid.
  6. Check active ingredients. Different boxes can contain the same type of laxative, so read the ingredient panel before combining products.
  7. Reassess rather than escalating. If symptoms are persistent, recurrent, or changing, medical review is safer than repeatedly switching products at home.

How quickly should you expect relief?

There is no reliable home method that guarantees a bowel movement within minutes. The NHS says lifestyle improvement may be noticeable within a few days, although it can sometimes take a few weeks. Laxatives may act sooner, but the NHS still describes most as working within three days rather than immediately.

Use the waiting period to judge the direction of symptoms, not just whether a bowel movement has happened yet. Note whether stool is becoming softer, whether you are passing gas, and whether discomfort is easing. A gradual improvement supports continuing the appropriate plan. A worsening trend, new vomiting, blood, fever, constant abdominal pain, or inability to pass gas changes the situation from routine constipation to a reason for urgent care.

Avoid taking repeated doses simply because relief has not occurred after a short interval. The package may specify when another dose is allowed, and exceeding that direction can increase risk. If the expected time has passed without improvement, call a pharmacist or clinician with the product name, dose, time taken, and your symptoms.

When to arrange a non-urgent medical review

Contact a clinician if constipation is not improving with appropriate treatment or keeps returning. The NHS also advises review for blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent tiredness, a sudden change in bowel habits, abdominal pain, or a medicine that may be causing constipation. These problems deserve evaluation even if a laxative produces temporary relief.

Bring a list of medicines and supplements, how long symptoms have lasted, your recent bowel pattern, and any changes in diet or activity. Include the names and dates of laxatives you tried and how you responded. This information helps the clinician look for an underlying cause instead of repeatedly treating the symptom.

Situations that need individualized advice

General adult self-care guidance may not be enough if you are pregnant, have a chronic medical condition, have significant pain, have a fluid restriction, or might have an obstruction. Ask a clinician or pharmacist before starting a supplement or laxative in these circumstances. People with kidney or heart conditions, or restrictions on fluids or electrolytes, should not assume that an over-the-counter product is automatically suitable.

The NHS adult guidance is separate from advice for babies and children. Do not use the amounts or product choices in this article as pediatric instructions. Older adults and people taking multiple medicines may also benefit from a medication review before selecting a product.

Common mistakes that delay relief

  • Adding a large amount of fiber at once: this often causes bloating; increase it in stages.
  • Taking fiber without liquid: fiber works better with adequate fluid and can be uncomfortable when taken dry.
  • Expecting an instant result: self-care may take days, and occasionally weeks.
  • Straining hard or sitting for a very long time: use a relaxed posture and stop rather than forcing a bowel movement.
  • Ignoring the urge: respond when you can, then maintain a regular time such as after breakfast.
  • Stopping a prescribed medicine abruptly: discuss suspected medicine-related constipation with a professional first.
  • Taking more than one laxative without advice: this can duplicate ingredients or produce unwanted effects.
  • Continuing self-treatment despite warning signs: bleeding, constant pain, vomiting, fever, inability to pass gas, lower back pain, or unexplained weight loss require medical evaluation.

A simple decision guide

  1. Check for warning signs. If any are present, seek urgent medical care.
  2. If none are present, start the basics. Increase fiber gradually, drink suitable liquids, move regularly, use a post-breakfast toilet time, and raise your knees with a low footstool.
  3. Review medicines and supplements. Ask before changing any prescribed treatment.
  4. Give the plan reasonable time. Lifestyle changes may take a few days and sometimes a few weeks; do not promise or expect a result within minutes.
  5. If there is no improvement, speak with a pharmacist. Choose one short-term laxative option that matches your circumstances and follow its label.
  6. Track the response. Record the product, dose, time, stool changes, pain, vomiting, fever, and ability to pass gas.
  7. Arrange clinical review if symptoms persist, recur, or change. Do not continue laxatives beyond the product’s limit or more than one week without provider advice.

What to have ready before calling a pharmacist

A short checklist makes the conversation safer and faster. Note your age, how long constipation has lasted, whether you can pass gas, the presence or absence of pain, vomiting, fever, or blood, and what you have already tried. List every prescription medicine, over-the-counter product, vitamin, and supplement. Tell the pharmacist if you are pregnant, have a chronic illness, or have been told to limit fluids. These details help distinguish a problem suitable for brief self-care from one needing a clinician.

Ask how soon the suggested product should work, how long to use it, what to do if it does not work, and which symptoms mean you should stop and seek care. Read the label yourself as well; packaging can change, and a product sold under a familiar brand may have different ingredients or strengths in another location.

Bottom line for a quick but safe approach

For uncomplicated adult constipation, begin with gradual fiber from whole grains, beans, fruit, vegetables, and nuts; drink suitable liquids; move regularly; respond to the urge; and try a relaxed, post-breakfast toilet routine with your knees above your hips. Expect improvement over days rather than minutes. If those measures fail, a pharmacist can help select one short-term option. Never use laxatives to delay care for bleeding, constant abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, inability to pass gas, lower back pain, or unexplained weight loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do right now for constipation at home?

If you are an adult without warning signs, drink a suitable liquid, take a short walk, and try an unhurried toilet session 15–45 minutes after breakfast. Use a low footstool so your knees are above your hips, and do not strain. Begin increasing fiber gradually rather than taking a large amount at once.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much fiber should an adult get each day?

NIDDK gives a general adult target of 22–34 grams daily, depending on age and sex. Increase toward that range gradually from whole grains, beans and lentils, fruit, vegetables, and nuts.

How long does constipation self-care take to work?

The NHS says improvement may appear within a few days, but it can sometimes take a few weeks. No home method reliably guarantees relief within minutes.

When should I ask a pharmacist about a laxative?

Ask when gradual fiber, suitable liquids, activity, and a regular toilet routine are not helping. A pharmacist can consider your symptoms, medicines, pregnancy status, chronic conditions, fluid restrictions, and the product label before suggesting a short-term option.

Can I take a laxative if I have stomach pain or vomiting?

Do not take one for severe stomach pain, nausea, or vomiting without medical advice. These symptoms can signal a problem that needs assessment rather than additional laxative doses.

What warning signs mean constipation is urgent?

Seek urgent care for rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, constant abdominal pain, inability to pass gas, vomiting, fever, lower back pain, or unexplained weight loss.

Is a fiber supplement a fast cure?

No. Fiber supplements are an optional class that adds bulk and retains water, and they need adequate liquid. Increase gradually and ask a professional first if obstruction is possible or fluids are restricted.

How long can I use an over-the-counter laxative?

Use it only as the label and pharmacist advise. The NHS recommends short-term use, and MedlinePlus says to consult a provider if you need a laxative for more than one week.

Should I stop a medicine that may be causing constipation?

No. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own. Ask a clinician or pharmacist whether a dose change, alternative, or separate constipation treatment is appropriate.

Can children use the advice in this article?

No. The guidance is for adults. Children and babies need age-specific advice from a pediatric clinician or an appropriate local health service.

The Bottom Line

Start gently: add fiber over time, pair it with suitable liquids, move, use a post-breakfast toilet routine, and raise your knees with a footstool. Improvement may take days or weeks. Use a laxative only short term and with label or pharmacist guidance. Blood, constant pain, vomiting, fever, inability to pass gas, lower back pain, or unexplained weight loss require medical care.
