Keep your fingers out of the jaws and the handles’ closing path, stabilize the workpiece, and press the release lever on the handle. If the lever will not move, slightly loosen the adjustment screw at the end of the handle and try the lever again. If the pliers still will not open, or any part looks bent or broken, stop rather than forcing the mechanism.
How to release locking pliers safely
- Protect your hands and control the workpiece. Keep fingers clear of both the jaws and the area where the handles close. Hold or support the workpiece so it cannot fall or spring away when the jaws release.
- Locate the release lever. It is built into a handle. On the IRWIN VISE-GRIP 10WR model described in its manual, the lever is on the lower handle; other designs may differ.
- Press the lever as the tool is designed to be operated. On that 10WR model, the manual describes pushing the lower-handle lever; the jaws then spring open. Do not put your hand between the jaws as they open.
- If the lever resists, reduce tension slightly. Turn the adjustment screw at the end of the handle a small amount counterclockwise, then try pressing the release lever again. Make small changes rather than backing the screw out completely.
- Stop if it remains jammed or looks damaged. Do not hammer the tool, force the lever, or pry at the linkage. Seek model-specific guidance from the tool maker, or replace the pliers if the release mechanism is damaged or unusable.
Why the adjustment screw may help
The adjustment screw sets the jaw opening and clamping pressure. Reducing that setting slightly may ease pressure on a release mechanism that is resisting, which is why loosening it a little is a reasonable troubleshooting step. However, the manuals described here explain ordinary operation and adjustment; they do not establish this as a manufacturer-approved fix for every stuck pair of locking pliers. Treat it as a cautious attempt, not a guaranteed remedy.
Turn the screw only a little, then test the release lever. If the lever still will not operate, repeated adjustment or added force is not a reliable way to diagnose the problem. Stop and check the tool maker’s instructions for the exact model.
What to check if the pliers still will not open
- The lever moves after a small adjustment: Let the jaws open while keeping clear of their path, then remove the tool from the workpiece. Before using it again, check that the lever and adjustment screw operate normally.
- The lever does not move: Stop. The available instructions do not provide a universal procedure for freeing a jammed release mechanism, so avoid improvised force and consult model-specific guidance.
- A handle, jaw, lever, or other part appears bent, broken, or badly worn: Do not rely on the pliers. A WORKPRO instruction page cautions against using damaged or worn pliers; if the release mechanism is not usable, replacement may be necessary.
What the manual guidance covers
The IRWIN VISE-GRIP 10WR manual hosted by Manuals.plus describes the adjustment screw, the lower-handle release lever, and the jaws’ spring-opening action. A separate WORKPRO instruction page hosted there describes similar lever and adjustment controls and warns against using damaged or worn pliers. These are third-party-hosted manual pages, and their details should not be assumed to apply to every locking-plier design. IRWIN Support also discusses locking pliers in an article about turning a broken tap, but that article does not give a stuck-release procedure.
