An abstract syntax tree (AST) lets your application inspect the structure of AI-generated PostgreSQL and reject statements that violate an explicit policy before they reach the database. It is a useful gate—not proof that a query is safe, authorized, or appropriate to run. PostgreSQL first parses SQL syntax into a raw parse tree; a later stage interprets database-dependent meaning. A robust design combines AST checks with separate parameter binding and database permissions suited to the task.

What PostgreSQL parsing tells you—and what it does not

PostgreSQL’s parser checks SQL syntax and builds a parse tree when the text is syntactically valid. The documentation describes this stage as creating a parse tree “using only fixed rules about the syntactic structure of SQL” (PostgreSQL: The Parser Stage). A later transformation stage resolves database-dependent meaning, including referenced tables, functions, and operators, and adds type information.

That distinction matters for AI-generated SQL. An AST exposes structure that an application can inspect more reliably than SQL text with ad hoc string matching. But parsing alone does not establish what a statement means in the target database, whether the user is allowed to perform it, or whether its effects are acceptable. AST validation is a policy check your application defines; it is not a PostgreSQL sandbox or a complete SQL-injection defense.

Build a validation gate before execution

Use a PostgreSQL-compatible parser, reject parse errors, inspect the resulting structure against a narrowly defined policy, bind data values separately, and execute only statements that pass. The policy should reflect the application’s intended use rather than treating any syntactically valid query as acceptable.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Parse with a version-compatible parser. Treat parser errors as rejection, not as a reason to fall back to executing the original text. Align the parser’s grammar with the PostgreSQL major version the application targets.
  2. Inspect the AST against explicit rules. Allow only the statement forms and represented constructs the feature needs. Reject anything outside that policy. This is application-defined guidance; PostgreSQL does not supply an AST allowlist for your application.
  3. Bind values through the database driver. Keep user or model-supplied data out of SQL text wherever it can be supplied as a parameter.
  4. Execute only approved statements. Use database permissions appropriate to the task; passing an AST check does not grant authorization or make an operation harmless.

Keep parameter values separate from SQL structure

PostgreSQL’s extended query protocol separates parse, bind, and execute. A prepared statement represents query text that has been parsed and semantically analyzed; binding supplies parameter values before execution (PostgreSQL: Extended Query). The SQL PREPARE command uses positional parameters such as $1 and $2; those placeholders stand for values, not arbitrary SQL grammar (PostgreSQL: PREPARE).

Use your client library’s parameter-binding API for values rather than concatenating them into generated SQL. If a query needs variable table or column names, constrain those identifiers to an application-owned allowlist or use a safe identifier API. Value placeholders do not substitute for identifiers, operators, or other structural parts of a statement.

Do not use EXPLAIN ANALYZE as a harmless preflight

EXPLAIN displays a planned statement. EXPLAIN ANALYZE executes the statement and adds profiling overhead, which can make reported runtime longer than ordinary execution (PostgreSQL: EXPLAIN). Do not run it as though it merely validates generated SQL, especially when the statement may modify data or have other effects.

Parser options and version fit

For Python applications, pglast exposes PostgreSQL parser output as AST nodes. Its repository associates the v8 branch with PostgreSQL 18 (pglast repository). libpg_query makes PostgreSQL’s parser available outside the server and returns its internal parse tree; its repository lists bindings for multiple languages, including pglast.

These are implementation options, not interchangeable guarantees. Before choosing one, check PostgreSQL major-version coverage, the language and runtime fit, whether the library exposes structured nodes or serialized output, and its license and deployment requirements. Pin and verify the parser release against the grammar version your application targets; a parser that accepts a different PostgreSQL grammar may not represent the server’s behavior accurately.

What an AST check can responsibly promise

A successful check can mean that the statement parsed and met the structural rules your application encoded. It cannot, by itself, promise safe intent, adequate authorization, or acceptable runtime and effects. Treat it as one layer in a controlled execution path: combine structural policy with parameter binding and suitable database permissions rather than relying on the tree alone.
