To reinstall Ubuntu on a VPS, use the hosting provider’s control panel to rebuild the server or create a replacement server from an Ubuntu image. This replaces the operating-system disk and can permanently erase everything that is not backed up. Inventory the server, stop writes, verify recoverable backups, record access details, perform the provider operation, then harden and test the new installation before changing DNS or deleting the old system.

What a VPS “reinstall” actually does

A VPS reinstall is normally not an apt command. It is a control-plane operation performed by the hosting provider. Depending on the provider, the control panel may call it Rebuild, Reinstall, Restore base image, or may expect you to delete the old server and create a new one. The operation writes a selected Ubuntu image to the server’s system disk.

That process removes the existing operating system, installed packages, users, service configuration, logs, and usually application data stored on the system disk. DigitalOcean warns that if a Droplet has no backups, snapshots, or local copies and you rebuild it, its data is “completely irretrievable.” Treat the confirmation dialog as a destructive disk wipe, not as a routine software update.

Attached block volumes, object-storage data, external databases, and provider snapshots may have separate lifecycles, but you must verify each item in your provider’s documentation and console. Never assume an attached volume, reserved IP, firewall object, or snapshot will automatically be preserved or reattached.

Decide whether to reinstall, rebuild, or upgrade

First identify the outcome you need. A clean operating system is appropriate when the installation is compromised, unmanageable, polluted with obsolete packages, or being repurposed. A release upgrade is usually better when the current system is healthy and you only need a newer Ubuntu version.

Rebuild versus a replacement VPS

Decision factor Rebuild the existing VPS Create a replacement VPS
Data-loss exposure High: the selected system disk is overwritten in place. Lower during preparation because the old server remains available, but data can still be lost if migration backups are incomplete.
IP address Often retained by the same resource; DigitalOcean retains the Droplet IP when rebuilding. Usually receives a different address; provider-specific reserved-IP behavior must be checked.
Rollback Requires a snapshot, image, or separate backup that can be restored. The old server can remain as a rollback source until cutover.
Downtime Begins when the rebuild starts and lasts through bootstrap and restoration. Can be close to zero for readers who test first and switch DNS only after validation.
Pre-cutover testing Limited, because the production resource is being changed. Strong: test by temporary hostname, direct IP, or local hosts-file entry before DNS changes.
Provider console access Existing console, account permissions, quotas, and recovery settings remain associated with the resource. New firewall, monitoring, backup, quota, and access settings may need to be configured.
Snapshots and backups Existing snapshots may be available, but confirm they cover the required disk and date. Take a final snapshot of the old VPS and an initial snapshot of the replacement after hardening.
Ongoing cost Normally continues at the existing resource rate. Two servers may be billed while you migrate and test; exact pricing depends on the provider and plan.

A replacement server is usually the safer choice for a production application because it provides a testable migration and a straightforward rollback. Rebuilding is practical when the IP must remain attached to the existing resource, the system is disposable, or the provider’s replacement workflow would disrupt dependent resources.

Reinstall versus an in-place Ubuntu release upgrade

Factor Reinstall In-place release upgrade
Resulting system Clean image with no historical packages or configuration unless you restore them. Existing users, packages, configuration, and accumulated changes are retained and transformed.
Configuration preservation Only what you deliberately back up and restore. Most configuration remains, although files can require conflict resolution.
Downtime Rebuild, bootstrap, restore, and validation time. Upgrade duration plus possible reboots and service repairs.
Application compatibility You choose exactly which versions and services to install, but every dependency must be redeployed. Existing applications remain in place, but package, language-runtime, and database compatibility must be checked.
Rollback complexity Requires a tested image, snapshot, or replacement server. Usually requires restoring a full backup or reverting to a prior server image.

Canonical recommends sudo do-release-upgrade for Ubuntu Server and cloud images when the goal is a newer release. Ubuntu supports sequential LTS upgrades; do not skip directly across multiple LTS releases. Canonical states that an LTS release receives five years of standard support and security updates, while an interim release is supported for nine months.

Before touching the rebuild button: make an inventory

Do this while the current VPS is still reachable. Save the results somewhere outside the VPS, preferably in an access-controlled password manager or private repository. Do not place private keys or production secrets in a publicly readable file.

  • Operating system: record the output of cat /etc/os-release, kernel version, architecture, and whether the machine uses BIOS or UEFI conventions supplied by the provider.
  • Network identity: record public and private IP addresses, IPv4 and IPv6 assignments, reverse DNS, provider firewalls, security groups, load balancer membership, and any allowlists that reference the old address.
  • DNS: list A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, SRV, and verification records. Record the current TTL and the intended cutover value.
  • Storage: list root and attached volumes with lsblk -f, mount points from findmnt, filesystem labels, RAID or encryption details, and any provider volume identifiers.
  • Accounts and access: record administrative usernames, sudo rules, SSH authorized keys, bastion or VPN paths, console access, and the provider’s recovery credentials. Never copy private SSH keys onto the server as a substitute for keeping them securely on your workstation.
  • Services: list enabled systemd units with systemctl list-unit-files --state=enabled, listening sockets with ss -tulpn, scheduled tasks in system and user crontabs, timers, workers, queues, and container or orchestration definitions.
  • Packages: export manually installed packages, repositories, package pins, language runtimes, container images, and custom binaries. A simple package list is useful, but it is not a substitute for documenting how each service is configured.
  • Application state: identify web roots, uploaded files, media, user-generated content, deployment artifacts, database engines and versions, message queues, caches, and data stored outside the obvious application directory.
  • Configuration and secrets: collect relevant files under /etc, reverse-proxy and web-server virtual hosts, service unit files, environment files, TLS certificate locations, deployment scripts, API credentials, and encryption keys. Encrypt this export and restrict its permissions.
  • Operations: record monitoring checks, alert destinations, backup schedules, log destinations, resource limits, process supervisors, and any manual runbooks needed to start or stop the application.

Stop writes and create a recoverable backup

Backups must represent a consistent application state. A file copy taken while a database is changing may restore files that do not agree with the database’s transaction state.

  1. Announce a maintenance window or put the application into maintenance mode. Stop background workers, queues, scheduled jobs, and deployment automation that could write during the backup.
  2. Export each database using its engine’s consistent dump or backup procedure. Record the database version, character set, extensions, users, grants, and any files stored outside the logical dump.
  3. Copy application files and configuration to independent storage. For a remote destination, an example is rsync -aHAX --numeric-ids /srv/app/ backup-user@backup-host:/backups/vps-app/. Adjust paths, destination permissions, and exclusions for your environment; do not blindly copy transient sockets, caches, or enormous log directories.
  4. Copy selected system configuration, for example rsync -a /etc/nginx/ backup-user@backup-host:/backups/vps-etc/nginx/, and separately preserve firewall definitions, systemd units, cron files, and package lists.
  5. Take a provider snapshot or enable provider backups if the plan supports them. A snapshot is a recovery asset, not proof that your application-level database backup is valid.
  6. Verify the backup from another machine. Check that files can be read, the archive can be listed, and a database dump can be restored into a disposable instance. Record the backup timestamp and retention location.

Hetzner’s documented Rescue workflow allows an administrator to boot a recovery environment, mount the root partition, and copy files with scp or rsync before reinstalling. Use that path when the installed operating system no longer boots but the disk may still contain data.

Preserve access and plan for the new SSH fingerprint

Keep the provider web console open, retain a working SSH private key on your workstation, and arrange a second administrative path such as an out-of-band console or recovery environment. Confirm that your account can create or attach SSH keys to a newly installed server.

A rebuild normally generates a new host key. Your SSH client may stop with a warning that the host identification has changed. Do not disable host-key checking. Confirm that the rebuild really completed through the provider console, remove only the old entry for that address from your workstation’s ~/.ssh/known_hosts, and reconnect so the new fingerprint can be verified and saved.

If you are migrating to a replacement VPS, keep the old server online and do not change DNS until the new server passes the validation checklist. Lowering DNS TTL ahead of time can shorten propagation, but resolvers may continue to cache records for longer than the nominal TTL.

Run the provider’s reinstall operation

DigitalOcean rebuild or base-image restore

  1. Open the Droplet in the control panel.
  2. Choose Settings → Rebuild, or choose Actions → Restore base image where that label is shown.
  3. Select the required Ubuntu image and verify the release and architecture.
  4. Read the warning, type the Droplet name exactly as requested, and confirm the destructive operation.
  5. Wait for the control panel to report completion before attempting SSH. The IP remains associated with the Droplet when it is rebuilt, but the operating system and host key change.

DigitalOcean documents a 672-hour (28-day) monthly charging threshold for eligible bundled-plan Droplets. That figure is specific to the applicable DigitalOcean plan and must not be treated as a universal VPS billing rule.

Hetzner rebuild, replacement, or Rescue

For a clean installation, Hetzner documents using the server’s Rebuild function or deleting the old server and creating a new one. A replacement is preferable when you need to test the restored application without disturbing the current machine. If the operating system will not boot, activate the Rescue System, mount the relevant partition, and recover files before choosing a new image.

Provider labels, image availability, billing behavior, and IP retention can change by product and region. Confirm the final screen’s disk, image, IPv4/IPv6, volume, backup, and firewall selections before submitting.

Bootstrap the clean Ubuntu installation

The exact provider-supplied username varies. Use the username and SSH key selected during provisioning; do not assume that root or ubuntu exists on every image.

1. Connect and verify the image

ssh provider-user@SERVER_IP
cat /etc/os-release
hostnamectl
ip address
lsblk -f

Confirm that the release, hostname, disks, and network addresses match your plan. If SSH reports a changed fingerprint, verify the rebuild in the provider console before updating known_hosts.

  • Compatibility: Compatible with any brand's PC, works with both legacy BIOS and UEFI booting mode, except for Apple computers, Chromebooks and ARM-based devices.
  • Popularity:Most popular linux distributions and all come with common software includes office software, web browser, image editing, multimedia, and email except Lubuntu which is desgined to targted for very old PC.
  • Support: Print user guide and support available. please contact us for help if you have an issue.
  • Live USB or install: You can either try on USB or install on hard drive.

2. Update the base system

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade -y
sudo reboot

Reconnect after the reboot and check uname -a. Install only packages you can account for. Avoid copying the old machine’s entire package list without reviewing whether each package is still required.

3. Create a non-root administrator and enforce key authentication

sudo adduser adminuser
sudo usermod -aG sudo adminuser
sudo install -d -m 700 -o adminuser -g adminuser /home/adminuser/.ssh
sudo cp ~/.ssh/authorized_keys /home/adminuser/.ssh/authorized_keys
sudo chown adminuser:adminuser /home/adminuser/.ssh/authorized_keys
sudo chmod 600 /home/adminuser/.ssh/authorized_keys

Open a second terminal and test ssh adminuser@SERVER_IP before changing the original session. Then configure SSH policy in a drop-in file such as /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/ hardening.conf (without the space in the actual filename), using settings appropriate for your provider and automation:

PasswordAuthentication no
PermitRootLogin no
PubkeyAuthentication yes

Validate syntax with sudo sshd -t, reload with sudo systemctl reload ssh, and keep the existing session open until the new administrator connection succeeds. If an application or recovery process genuinely needs a different policy, document that exception rather than locking yourself out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Configure the firewall before exposing services

sudo apt install ufw
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw allow from YOUR_ADMIN_IP to any port 22 proto tcp
sudo ufw allow 80/tcp
sudo ufw allow 443/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose

Replace YOUR_ADMIN_IP with your actual management range. Do not open database, cache, or administrative ports to the entire Internet unless the design requires it. Coordinate the host firewall with provider-level firewalls so that both permit the intended traffic.

5. Set identity, time, and storage

sudo hostnamectl set-hostname vps.example.internal
sudo timedatectl set-timezone Etc/UTC
timedatectl status
findmnt
sudo blkid

Use your organization’s real hostname and time zone. Add attached volumes by stable UUID in /etc/fstab, test with sudo mount -a, and confirm ownership and permissions before restoring application files. Do not format a volume until its contents have been verified as disposable.

6. Install only the required services

Install the web server, runtime, database, queue, container engine, monitoring agent, and other components from your documented dependency list. Pin versions only when the application requires it, and enable services deliberately with sudo systemctl enable --now SERVICE. Recreate system users and groups with stable IDs where file ownership on restored volumes depends on them.

7. Restore configuration, data, and secrets

  1. Restore service configuration into a staging path first, compare it with the new image’s defaults, and preserve distribution-provided security changes.
  2. Restore application files with the correct owner, group, mode, and extended attributes. Avoid making the whole application tree writable by the web-server user.
  3. Initialize the database engine at the documented version, create roles and extensions, and import the consistent dump. Check row counts, migrations, indexes, and application connectivity.
  4. Restore environment files and secrets from encrypted storage. Rotate credentials if the old VPS was compromised or if secrets were exposed during recovery.
  5. Install certificates or rerun your certificate automation. Confirm that private keys are readable only by the intended service account.
  6. Recreate cron jobs, systemd timers, queues, workers, log rotation, backup jobs, and monitoring checks. Run one controlled job manually before enabling schedules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Validate everything before DNS cutover

Validation should be explicit and repeatable. Test through the replacement server’s temporary hostname or IP while the old production endpoint remains available.

  • Background processing: submit a test job, verify queue consumption, scheduled tasks, email delivery, and idempotency of retries.
  • TLS: inspect the certificate chain, names, expiry, protocol policy, renewal timer, and any certificate-dependent upstream connections.
  • Observability: confirm metrics, alerts, log shipping, disk and memory thresholds, and uptime checks point to the new system.
  • Capacity: check CPU, memory, disk space, inode usage, file-descriptor limits, database connections, and provider quotas under a realistic workload.
  • Recovery: perform a small restore test from the newly configured backup job and document the exact rebuild and restore sequence.

After the replacement passes, update DNS and external allowlists, watch traffic and logs, and keep the old VPS untouched until the agreed rollback period ends. Remove the old server only after application owners confirm that data, scheduled work, mail, certificates, monitoring, and backups are all operating from the new host.

Common failure modes and recovery actions

The server is unreachable immediately after rebuild

Check the provider console for operation status, confirm the assigned IP, and use the out-of-band console or Rescue System. Verify that the image booted, the network interface obtained the expected address, and the host firewall did not block SSH. If the provider supplied a different username or key, use those credentials rather than repeatedly trying the old account.

SSH says “REMOTE HOST IDENTIFICATION HAS CHANGED”

A new host key is expected after a rebuild. Verify the server identity in the provider console, remove only the old address entry from known_hosts, reconnect, and record the new fingerprint. Never solve this warning by disabling strict host-key checking globally.

The application starts but cannot read files

Inspect ownership, group membership, permissions, ACLs, mount options, and security profiles. A restored file may be owned by a numeric UID that does not yet exist on the clean system. Recreate the intended service account, then correct ownership selectively rather than applying a blanket world-writable mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The database import fails

Confirm that the target engine and extensions are compatible with the dump, that the database role exists, and that the import has enough disk space and temporary space. Restore into a disposable database first, read the first error rather than skipping failures, and rerun migrations only after the base import is known to be consistent.

DNS appears unchanged after cutover

Check authoritative records, resolver caches, TTLs, split-horizon DNS, IPv6 AAAA records, and application redirects. Test with several independent resolvers and query the new server directly. Do not delete the old VPS merely because one workstation resolves the new address.

When an upgrade is the safer operation

If the server is healthy and the requirement is only a newer Ubuntu release, make a full backup and use the supported release-upgrade path rather than rebuilding. Run sudo do-release-upgrade from a supported Ubuntu Server or cloud image, review proposed configuration changes, and schedule time for reboots and application testing.

Upgrade one supported release at a time, especially between LTS releases. Check application runtimes, database versions, third-party repositories, kernel modules, and provider images before starting. An in-place upgrade preserves much of the existing configuration, so it does not provide the clean baseline that a rebuild does; conversely, it avoids redeploying every service and restoring every file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision checklist

  • Choose rebuild when you need a clean image, can tolerate downtime, have verified backups, and want to retain the existing VPS resource and usually its IP.
  • Choose a replacement VPS when production continuity, pre-cutover testing, or an easy rollback matters more than keeping the same resource.
  • Choose an in-place upgrade when the current installation is healthy and only the Ubuntu release needs to change.
  • Do not start any destructive operation until the database export, file backup, provider snapshot, access keys, DNS plan, and restore test are all accounted for.
