To reimage a server running Rocket.Chat without losing the workspace, first map and preserve its MongoDB database, uploaded files, deployment configuration, and network settings. Reimaging replaces the host’s operating system; it does not automatically reinstall Rocket.Chat or restore its data. Make a verified backup that survives the wipe, rebuild with a deployment method supported for your release, restore persistent data, and test the service before directing users to it.

What to preserve before you reimage

Rocket.Chat’s official documentation describes database backup and restore, but does not provide one universal reimage checklist for every deployment topology. The files and storage locations vary, so identify where each component lives on your actual system before shutting it down.

  • Application and database: record the Rocket.Chat release, MongoDB version, database location, replica-set arrangement, and whether MongoDB is on this host or managed elsewhere.
  • Uploads: identify the configured file-storage backend and its data location. Rocket.Chat recommends object storage such as Amazon S3, Google Cloud Storage, or MinIO for uploads and says GridFS is not recommended. Do not assume a MongoDB dump contains every uploaded file.
  • Deployment configuration: save Compose files, the .env file or service environment, Kubernetes manifests or Helm values, and any custom scripts or service definitions. Treat secrets as credentials; keep them in a secure location.
  • Network and integrations: record the domain and DNS settings, TLS certificates and renewal process, reverse-proxy configuration, firewall rules, and any custom integrations or apps.
  • Recovery destination: confirm database archives, upload data, and configuration copies are stored somewhere that will not be erased with the server.

Rocket.Chat’s [Docker deployment guide] and [file-storage guidance] cover some of these configuration surfaces, but the correct inventory depends on your setup.

Back up MongoDB and verify the copy

Rocket.Chat’s Docker guide demonstrates creating a MongoDB archive from a running container. Replace <container_name> with the actual MongoDB container name:

  • Drag-and-drop file saving right out of the box

docker exec <container_name> sh -c 'mongodump --archive' > db.dump

Copy db.dump off the server or to storage that will survive the reimage. A backup left only on the host being wiped is not a recovery copy. Protect it as sensitive workspace data, and do not put database credentials in an exposed shell history or file.

The documented restore pattern for a MongoDB container is:

docker exec -i <container_name> sh -c 'mongorestore --archive' < db.dump

For an external MongoDB target, the same guide shows using mongorestore --uri=... --archive=db.dump. Treat credentials inside a URI as secrets. Review the official [backup and restore instructions] for the relevant deployment, target, and database details before relying on these examples.

  • High-capacity add-on storage.Specific uses: Business, personal

A successful dump command is not proof of recoverability. Where practical, test restoring the archive into a separate suitable MongoDB instance before wiping the original host. Back up and test the upload backend separately, and preserve configuration independently of the database. An offline external drive can hold an exported database archive, but by itself it neither saves the rest of the deployment nor proves that recovery will work.

Choose a deployment method for the rebuilt host

Rocket.Chat lists Docker Compose, Kubernetes with its official Helm chart, Podman, and OpenShift as recommended self-managed deployment methods. The [deployment overview] treats additional platforms separately and says Rocket.Chat does not support those methods, warning of compatibility challenges. Use an approach your team already operates and can recover, rather than changing deployment models during a host rebuild without a migration plan.

Approach Best fit Recovery considerations
Docker Compose A team seeking a straightforward container-based deployment on a server. Preserve the Compose file, environment settings, and persistent data locations. Rocket.Chat’s Docker guide requires Docker, Docker Compose v2, and Git; it recommends pinning a specific Rocket.Chat release tag in production rather than allowing an unplanned latest-version change.
Kubernetes with the official Helm chart An organization that already runs Kubernetes and needs its orchestration capabilities. Preserve Helm values and manifests, and map persistent database and upload storage to the infrastructure that will remain available after the node or server is reimaged.
Manual Ubuntu installation An administrator intentionally maintaining a manual service installation. Preserve service definitions, environment settings, database and upload storage, and the exact application version. Rebuilding the application directory alone does not recover these components.

For all three, plan for database persistence, upload storage, configuration versioning, availability needs, and who will maintain the platform. Follow the official instructions for the specific deployment method rather than assuming their procedures are interchangeable.

Check release compatibility and capacity

Before installing, check the exact Rocket.Chat release’s requirements against the MongoDB version and runtime you intend to use. Rocket.Chat’s current [System Requirements] page, accessed October 7, 2026, states that Rocket.Chat 8.x requires MongoDB 8.0 or later. Its compatibility guidance is release-specific and may change. Official Docker deployments bundle Node.js, but MongoDB compatibility remains the operator’s responsibility.

The same page lists these planning configurations; its publication year is not stated, and the values are not a guarantee of capacity for a particular workload:

Scenario listed by Rocket.Chat Rocket.Chat resources MongoDB resources
Starter, no high availability, up to 500 concurrent users 2 vCPU, 4 GiB memory, 20 GiB storage 2 vCPU, 4 GiB memory, 10 GiB storage; three MongoDB replicas listed
Commercial/Government/Defense high-availability scenario, more than 500 concurrent users 4 vCPU, 8–12 GiB memory, 20 GiB storage 2 vCPU, 8–16 GiB memory, 20–80 GiB storage; three replicas
More than 5,000 concurrent users Kubernetes microservices approach; per-component minimums are specified on the requirements page See Rocket.Chat’s per-component requirements for this scenario

Rocket.Chat notes that actual sizing depends on expected concurrency and workload. Treat these as planning figures, not a server purchase recommendation or a promise that a given machine will handle the stated load.

Rebuild, restore, and validate in sequence

  1. Finish the inventory and backups before shutdown. Confirm the database archive, upload data, configuration, and network settings are saved outside the host. If possible, test the database restore before proceeding.
  2. Reinstall the operating system and prerequisites. Set up the prerequisites for the deployment method you selected. For Docker Compose, Rocket.Chat’s guide calls for Docker, Docker Compose v2, and Git.
  3. Recreate configuration and network access. Restore the Compose or service configuration, secrets, domain and DNS, reverse proxy, HTTPS certificates, and firewall allowances. Rocket.Chat’s production Docker guide requires a domain pointing to the server; its [Ubuntu installation guide] recommends serving the workspace over HTTPS.
  4. Restore persistent data. Restore MongoDB to the intended target and reconnect the upload backend. Confirm paths, permissions, and credentials against the preserved configuration before starting the application.
  5. Start Rocket.Chat on the intended release. Use the matching deployment procedure and a deliberate release tag or version, not an accidental upgrade caused by an unpinned latest image.
  6. Test recovery before announcing the service. Check container or service status and logs, sign in to the workspace, inspect older messages, open uploaded files, and test integrations. Verify the public DNS route and HTTPS certificate from the user-facing path.

Rocket.Chat’s [FAQ] says Docker deployments can be checked with docker ps and a container status of Up; for a manual Ubuntu install, check with systemctl status rocketchat. These status checks help identify whether a process is running, but they do not by themselves establish that messages, files, or integrations were restored correctly.

Do not treat an application-directory cleanup as a reimage plan

Rocket.Chat’s Ubuntu update procedure includes replacing the application directory in that specific update context. That is not a universal host-recovery step: deleting an application directory does not preserve or restore MongoDB, uploaded files, environment settings, or proxy configuration. Do not use rm -rf /opt/Rocket.Chat as a substitute for a complete backup and rebuild plan.
