Register a widgetized area during the widgets_init action, give it a stable lowercase ID, and render that same ID with dynamic_sidebar() where the area belongs in your theme. WordPress then exposes the area in the Widgets screen or Widgets Editor, where administrators can add widgets and blocks without editing templates.

Despite its name, a WordPress “sidebar” is not limited to the side of a page. It is any widgetized area defined by the active theme, including regions above or below content, in a footer, or inside a custom layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How dynamic sidebars work

A dynamic sidebar has three separate parts:

  1. Registration: PHP tells WordPress that a widget area exists and defines its label, ID, wrappers, and other settings.
  2. Administration: The registered area appears under the site’s Widgets interface. An administrator assigns widgets or blocks to it.
  3. Rendering: A theme template calls dynamic_sidebar() at the location where the assigned content should appear.

The area is “dynamic” because its contents are selected in the administration interface and can change without changing the template file. The active theme owns the available areas, so switching themes can remove, rename, or reposition them even though the widgets remain stored by WordPress.

The Theme Handbook defines a sidebar as “any widgetized area of your theme.” Treat the word as a technical label rather than a promise about visual placement.

Choose the implementation that matches your theme

Classic themes

In a classic PHP theme, registration normally goes in the active theme’s functions.php file or in a theme-specific include loaded from it. The registration function must be attached to widgets_init. Templates such as sidebar.php, single.php, page templates, or footer partials then call dynamic_sidebar().

Block themes

Block themes use block templates and the Site Editor for much of their layout. The Widgets Block Editor can place blocks and legacy widgets into widget areas or sidebars defined by the active theme. Inspect the active theme’s templates and the Widgets interface before adding PHP: a block theme may not expose the same classic template files or areas as a traditional theme.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A classic theme can contain both legacy widgets and blocks, depending on the site’s WordPress version and configuration. Registration still controls whether a PHP-defined area exists; the editor controls which widgets or blocks occupy it.

Register a sidebar with register_sidebar()

This is a complete classic-theme registration example:

<?php
function mytheme_widgets_init() {
    register_sidebar( array(
        'name'          => __( 'Primary Sidebar', 'mytheme' ),
        'id'            => 'primary-sidebar',
        'description' => __( 'Widgets shown beside main content.', 'mytheme' ),
        'before_widget' => '<aside id="%1$s" class="widget %2$s">',
        'after_widget'  => '</aside>',
        'before_title'  => '<h2 class="widget-title">',
        'after_title'   => '</h2>',
    ) );
}
add_action( 'widgets_init', 'mytheme_widgets_init' );

Save the code in the active theme, then reload the administration area. The Primary Sidebar label should be available in the Widgets screen. If it is not, the active theme may be different from the one containing the code, the PHP may have a syntax error, or the callback may not be attached to widgets_init.

What each registration argument does

Argument Purpose Practical guidance
name The human-readable label shown to administrators. Use a clear location such as “Primary Sidebar,” “Footer Column 1,” or “Below Article.” Wrap translatable text in __() with the theme’s text domain.
id The programmatic identifier used when rendering. Use a unique, explicit, lowercase ID such as primary-sidebar. Keep it stable after launch.
description Explains where the area appears or what belongs in it. Describe the visible location and intended content so another administrator can select the right area.
before_widget and after_widget Wrap every widget instance. Use a balanced pair and preserve both replacement tokens: %1$s becomes the generated widget ID and %2$s becomes the generated widget class.
before_title and after_title Wrap a widget’s title. Use a real heading element that fits the page hierarchy, commonly h2 or h3.
before_sidebar and after_sidebar Optionally wrap the entire sidebar output. Use these when the theme needs a container around all widgets, rather than a wrapper around each widget. These arguments were added in WordPress 5.6.0.
show_in_rest Controls whether the sidebar is exposed through the REST API. Set it only when the site’s integration needs REST exposure. The API reference documents a default limited to administrators; do not assume public exposure.

register_sidebar() returns the registered sidebar ID. Most themes do not need that return value, but it can be useful when registration is generated programmatically or when logging the resulting identifier.

Use stable IDs instead of automatic numbering

WordPress can work with numeric sidebar indexes, names, or IDs, but explicit IDs are the safest choice for a maintained theme. Automatically generated IDs can change when another theme or plugin changes the registration count. A template that silently depends on “sidebar 2” can therefore render a different area after an unrelated change.

Follow these ID rules:

  • Use lowercase characters, numbers, and hyphens.
  • Make the ID unique within the site’s registered sidebars.
  • Describe purpose or location, not a temporary design detail. primary-sidebar is more durable than blue-right-column.
  • Do not rename an ID casually after widgets have been assigned. A new ID is a different storage location and may appear empty until widgets are assigned again.

The display name can be changed for administrators without changing the ID used by templates.

Render the area in a theme template

Place the call in the template location where the widget area should appear. This example belongs in a sidebar partial or another template that outputs the complementary column:

<?php if ( is_active_sidebar( 'primary-sidebar' ) ) : ?>
    <div class="primary-sidebar" role="complementary">
        <?php dynamic_sidebar( 'primary-sidebar' ); ?>
    </div>
<?php endif; ?>

The string passed to dynamic_sidebar() must exactly match the registered ID. WordPress also accepts a numeric index or registered name, but using the explicit ID keeps the template independent of registration order and label changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why check is_active_sidebar() first?

An empty area should not leave an unexplained column, border, or blank spacing. is_active_sidebar() returns whether the named area has active widgets, allowing the theme to omit its outer layout container when there is nothing to show.

Use the return value when the call itself controls the layout

dynamic_sidebar() returns true when it renders a populated callable sidebar and false when the sidebar cannot be found or has no callable widgets. You can use that result instead of a separate check:

$output = ob_get_clean();

if ( $rendered ) {
    echo '<div class="primary-sidebar" role="complementary">';
    echo $output;
    echo '</div>';
}
?>

Most themes should prefer the simpler is_active_sidebar() pattern. Capture output only when you specifically need to decide whether to print an enclosing element after rendering.

Call it in the right page template

A registered area can be visible in Widgets administration but absent from the front end if the current page type never calls it. Confirm that the relevant single, page, archive, footer, or custom template contains the call. Registration creates the area; it does not place it anywhere automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build valid, accessible widget markup

Keep wrapper pairs balanced

Every opening wrapper must have a matching closing wrapper. If before_widget opens an aside, after_widget must close it. The same rule applies to sidebar-level wrappers and title wrappers. Unbalanced strings can break the document structure and cause later widgets or page content to inherit unintended styles.

Preserve WordPress placeholders

Keep %1$s in the widget opening tag for the generated widget ID and %2$s for the generated CSS classes. Removing either token makes individual widget targeting harder and can interfere with styles or plugin-generated behavior. A typical opening wrapper is:

'before_widget' => '<aside id="%1$s" class="widget %2$s">',

Use heading elements for titles

A widget title is content in the page outline, not merely text to style. Use h2 or h3 according to the surrounding template hierarchy. Do not choose a non-heading element solely because it is convenient to style; adjust the CSS instead.

Choose an appropriate landmark

An outer wrapper such as <div class="primary-sidebar" role="complementary"> identifies content related to, but separate from, the main article. If the area contains a distinct navigation menu, the widget itself or its theme markup may need a more specific navigation treatment. Avoid adding redundant landmark roles to every nested widget.

Populate the area in WordPress administration

  1. Sign in with an account that can manage widgets.
  2. Open Appearance → Widgets. The exact interface depends on the active theme and WordPress configuration.
  3. Locate the registered area by its name, such as Primary Sidebar.
  4. Add a legacy widget or a block, configure its settings, and save or publish the change as the interface requires.
  5. Visit a page type whose template calls dynamic_sidebar( 'primary-sidebar' ) and verify the output.

The Widgets Block Editor allows users to insert blocks and widgets into widget areas or sidebars defined by the active theme. A classic theme can therefore show a mixture of older widgets and blocks. The editor does not create arbitrary PHP-defined locations; it works with the areas the active theme exposes.

When an area is present but appears empty

Check whether the area actually contains an assigned widget or block, whether the widget is enabled for the current context, and whether the front-end template calls the matching ID. An area can be correctly registered and visible in administration while producing no output because it has no active content.

Register several widget areas

Use one callback for all areas so their lifecycle is easy to inspect:

<?php
function mytheme_widgets_init() {
    register_sidebar( array(
        'name'          => __( 'Primary Sidebar', 'mytheme' ),
        'id'            => 'primary-sidebar',
        'description' => __( 'Widgets beside the main content.', 'mytheme' ),
        'before_widget' => '<aside id="%1$s" class="widget %2$s">',
        'after_widget'  => '</aside>',
        'before_title'  => '<h2 class="widget-title">',
        'after_title'   => '</h2>',
    ) );

    register_sidebar( array(
        'name'          => __( 'Footer Column 1', 'mytheme' ),
        'id'            => 'footer-column-1',
        'description' => __( 'First footer widget column.', 'mytheme' ),
        'before_widget' => '<section id="%1$s" class="widget %2$s">',
        'after_widget'  => '</section>',
        'before_title'  => '<h3 class="widget-title">',
        'after_title'   => '</h3>',
    ) );
}
add_action( 'widgets_init', 'mytheme_widgets_init' );

Render each area with its own stable ID:

<?php if ( is_active_sidebar( 'footer-column-1' ) ) : ?>
    <div class="footer-column footer-column-1">
        <?php dynamic_sidebar( 'footer-column-1' ); ?>
    </div>
<?php endif; ?>

Use consistent wrapper conventions across areas unless a particular region genuinely needs different semantics. A footer column may use an h3 while a primary content sidebar uses an h2, because their surrounding heading levels can differ.

Classic PHP registration versus block-theme workflows

Decision point Classic PHP area Block-theme or Widgets Editor workflow
Where the area is defined Theme PHP registers it during widgets_init. The active theme’s block templates and registered widget areas define available locations.
Where content is managed Appearance → Widgets, using legacy widgets, blocks, or both. Widgets Editor or Site Editor, depending on the theme and WordPress setup.
Markup control High: PHP supplies widget, title, and optional sidebar wrappers. Primarily controlled by blocks, templates, and editor settings.
Rendering call Template code calls dynamic_sidebar() with an ID, name, or index. Follow the active block template’s existing structure; do not assume a classic sidebar.php exists.
Maintenance risk Changing an ID, wrapper, or template can affect assigned content and front-end layout. Changing templates or switching themes can change which areas are available and where blocks appear.
Best fit Sites requiring precise PHP placement and established classic-theme templates. Sites managed primarily through the Site Editor and block templates.

Do not add a PHP sidebar solely because the word “sidebar” appears in a design brief. First identify how the active theme builds its layout and which editor the site administrators already use.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Common failures and exact fixes

The area is missing from Appearance → Widgets

  • Confirm the code is in the active theme, not an inactive theme or an un-loaded include.
  • Confirm the callback is registered with add_action( 'widgets_init', 'mytheme_widgets_init' );.
  • Check PHP syntax and the site’s error log after saving the file.
  • Verify that the registration function runs only after WordPress has loaded it; do not call it conditionally in a way that skips normal requests.
  • If the site uses a block theme, inspect the block templates and Widgets Editor because the classic screen may not represent the whole layout model.

dynamic_sidebar() returns false

  • Compare the template argument with the registered id character for character.
  • Use the lowercase explicit ID, not an assumed number based on registration order.
  • Assign at least one active widget or block to the area.
  • Make sure the widget is callable and not disabled by another condition.

The area exists in administration but not on the front end

  • Find the template used by the page you are viewing.
  • Confirm that template reaches the dynamic_sidebar() call; a different page template, archive layout, or block template may be in use.
  • Check whether is_active_sidebar() is suppressing an empty area.
  • Inspect the browser output and CSS. The PHP may render correctly while a theme rule hides or collapses the container.

The markup is malformed

  • Pair every before_* value with its matching after_* value.
  • Keep the %1$s and %2$s placeholders in before_widget.
  • Validate the generated HTML around the first and last widgets, especially when using nested sidebar wrappers.
  • Check that title wrappers contain valid, properly nested heading elements.

Widgets disappeared after a theme change

Widget assignments are associated with registered area IDs. A new theme may not register the same IDs, may use different IDs, or may define its layout entirely through blocks. Record the old area names and IDs before a redesign, then map content deliberately to the new theme’s areas instead of expecting visual positions to carry over.

Maintenance and compatibility practices

Treat IDs as an interface

Templates, widget assignments, CSS, and sometimes integrations depend on the sidebar ID. Once a site is live, changing primary-sidebar to main-sidebar is a migration, not a cosmetic rename. If a new name is necessary, register the new area, move content, update every template call, and remove the old area only after verification.

Keep registration separate from placement

Registration belongs in the initialization callback; placement belongs in the template. This separation lets administrators populate an area without changing layout code and lets developers move an area without rewriting its widget settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a child theme or maintained code location

Editing a parent theme’s functions.php or templates can be overwritten by an update. Put custom registration and template changes in a child theme or another maintained theme extension appropriate to the site. Keep the same text domain and document each ID’s intended location.

Test empty and populated states

Preview each area with no widgets, one widget, and several widgets. Confirm that conditional wrappers remove unwanted gaps when empty, that titles have the expected heading level, and that long widget content does not break the layout.

Consider REST exposure deliberately

show_in_rest is an opt-in design decision for integrations that need to discover sidebars through the REST API. The register_sidebar() reference records the argument’s addition in WordPress 5.9.0 and documents a default limited to administrators. Match the setting to the site’s authentication and data-exposure requirements rather than enabling it indiscriminately.

A practical implementation checklist

  • Identify whether the active theme is classic or block-based.
  • Choose a descriptive, lowercase, stable ID.
  • Register the area on widgets_init.
  • Give administrators a useful name and location description.
  • Use balanced wrappers and retain %1$s and %2$s.
  • Use an appropriate heading element for widget titles.
  • Place dynamic_sidebar() in the template that actually renders the desired page region.
  • Guard the outer container with is_active_sidebar() or handle the boolean result of dynamic_sidebar().
  • Populate and test the area in Appearance → Widgets or the Widgets Editor.
  • Test empty, single-widget, and multi-widget states on every relevant page type.
  • Document the ID before shipping so future template and theme changes preserve the association.
