In the United States, legal camera-drone flying starts by choosing the correct FAA operating category—not by buying a particular model. Fly only for fun or personal enjoyment and qualify for the recreational exception, or use the Part 107 route for business, paid work, public-safety missions, and other non-recreational operations. Then complete the matching registration and pilot requirement, verify Remote ID, obtain any required airspace authorization, and follow the operating rules at the actual location and time.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) says, “More importantly, drone safety is the law.” The checklist below applies to U.S. federal rules consulted on October 13, 2026. Fees, Remote ID listings, test procedures, temporary flight restrictions, and airspace-processing times can change, so confirm the live FAA pages and tools before registering or flying.

First decide: recreational exception or Part 107?

Your purpose determines which legal path applies. FAA recreational registration and Part 107 registration are separate systems; a registration completed for one type of operation cannot be transferred to the other.

Question Recreational exception Part 107 operation
Typical purpose Fun or personal enjoyment, when the operation meets the statutory recreational exception Business, paid photography or video, public-safety work, client services, or another non-recreational purpose
Pilot requirement Pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test (TRUST) and retain proof Hold the appropriate FAA remote-pilot certificate and meet current testing or recurrent requirements
Registration trigger Required above 0.55 pounds (250 grams); lighter aircraft are exempt only when flown exclusively under the recreational exception Every drone must be registered, regardless of weight
Registration model One recreational registration covers the aircraft in the registrant’s listed inventory Register each Part 107 drone separately
Airspace Prior authorization is required for controlled airspace when applicable Prior authorization is required for controlled airspace when applicable

A camera does not decide the category. A drone used to record your own vacation for personal enjoyment may fit the recreational route; the same aircraft used to deliver footage to a client belongs on the Part 107 path. When a planned flight has mixed purposes, do not assume that calling it “hobby” makes it recreational. Describe the actual mission and use the route that matches it.

Do you need to register your camera drone?

Recreational weight rule

A recreational flyer may leave a drone unregistered only when it weighs 0.55 pounds (250 grams) or less and is flown exclusively under the recreational exception. The limit is a condition of the exemption, not a general “small-drone” pass. A heavier recreational drone must be registered before flight.

Any drone operated under Part 107 must be registered, including one at or below 0.55 pounds. If you switch a lightweight aircraft from personal flying to paid work, the Part 107 registration requirement applies before that operation.

What the current registration page lists

The FAA’s registration page listed a $5 fee for recreational inventory registration and $5 for each Part 107 drone, with either registration valid for three years. Those amounts and terms were shown on the FAA page in 2026 and are subject to change; verify the amount at checkout rather than relying on an old receipt or article.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Registration requires personal information and aircraft details. The FAA page identifies make and model information and, when applicable, the specific Remote ID serial number as part of the information you may need. A Remote ID serial can be different from the serial number printed on the aircraft body or packaging, so copy the identifier requested by the FAA system for the exact configuration.

Where and how to register

  1. Open the FAA’s FAADroneZone registration service and choose the recreational or Part 107 path that matches the intended operation.
  2. Enter the requested registrant information and the aircraft information. For Part 107, prepare the details for each drone; recreational registration uses your listed inventory.
  3. Pay the displayed fee and submit the application. Save the confirmation and registration record where you can retrieve it without an internet connection.
  4. Mark the registration number on the drone’s exterior in the manner currently specified by the FAA registration instructions. The marking must remain readable and attached during normal use.
  5. Record the expiration date and set a reminder well before the three-year term ends. If the aircraft or operation changes category, complete the correct registration process instead of trying to move the old registration.

The number belongs on the aircraft, while the registration record belongs with your operating documents. Carrying a screenshot or printed copy is practical when cellular service is unreliable, but always follow the current FAA documentation instructions.

TRUST or a Part 107 certificate: which pilot requirement applies?

TRUST for recreational flying

Anyone flying under the recreational exception must pass the Recreational UAS Safety Test, commonly called TRUST, before flying. FAA-approved test administrators deliver it online. Keep proof of passage available; the FAA says law-enforcement officers or FAA personnel may ask to see it.

Part 107 remote-pilot certification

Part 107 operations require the appropriate FAA remote-pilot certificate. The FAA process includes an initial aeronautical-knowledge test and a certificate application route; certificate holders also have recurrent-training obligations described by the FAA. Requirements and procedures can be revised, so use the current FAA instructions when scheduling a test, applying, or completing recurrent training.

A certificate is a pilot qualification, not a blanket permission to fly anywhere. The aircraft still needs the correct Part 107 registration, Remote ID compliance, and any required airspace authorization.

Remote ID: verify the exact drone configuration

The FAA states that drones required to be registered or that are registered—including recreational, business, and public-safety drones—must comply with Remote ID. Registration alone does not prove compliance.

Check the FAA-accepted declaration

  1. Identify the exact aircraft model and the configuration you will fly, including any firmware or hardware changes.
  2. Check that model and configuration against the FAA-accepted Declaration of Compliance information.
  3. Determine whether the aircraft is a Standard Remote ID drone or an eligible aircraft configured with a broadcast module.
  4. Use the Remote ID serial number requested by the FAA registration system, which may not match the ordinary aircraft serial.
  5. Before each major configuration change, recheck the manufacturer’s instructions and the FAA acceptance information. Do not assume that a product listing, a retailer description, or another owner’s setup proves your aircraft is compliant.

A broadcast module is a conditional option, not a universal accessory. It is relevant only when the aircraft configuration is eligible and the module is compatible and accepted for that use. Without those checks, buying or attaching a generic module does not establish legal compliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Airspace permission is separate from registration

A registration number does not authorize a location. Before every flight, check current FAA airspace information for the exact launch and operating area, date, and time. Controlled and uncontrolled airspace can have different requirements, and temporary restrictions can change the answer after you have planned a shoot.

Controlled airspace and LAANC

Recreational flyers need prior authorization for operations in controlled airspace when applicable. In areas supported by the Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC), an approved service can provide near-real-time authorization within the published UAS Facility Map altitudes. A request that needs further coordination is not automatically approved; wait for the required authorization.

Part 107 pilots likewise need authorization for controlled-airspace operations when required. LAANC can handle supported requests, while requests outside LAANC-enabled areas can be submitted through FAA DroneZone for manual processing.

DroneZone timing

The FAA Part 107 airspace-authorization page, updated October 1, 2026, reported that some DroneZone requests have historically taken up to eight weeks and that actual processing varies. Treat eight weeks as a historical estimate, not a promised service level. Apply early, monitor the request, and do not fly in the controlled area until the required approval is in hand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Near an airport

Being outside a charted controlled-airspace boundary does not remove every safety duty near an airport. FAA airport guidance distinguishes controlled from uncontrolled airspace and emphasizes avoiding interference with airport operations and yielding to other aircraft. Check the current airspace tools and airport information for the location rather than relying on distance rules remembered from another flight.

Operating rules that apply after the paperwork

The category and location determine the detailed requirements, but the following habits are central to legal recreational operations and are also essential risk controls for Part 107 work:

  • Keep the drone within visual line of sight as required for the operation, using a qualified visual observer only in the manner allowed by the applicable rule.
  • Yield to manned aircraft and land or move away when an aircraft creates a conflict.
  • Follow the applicable FAA safety and airspace requirements for the operation, including any authorization limits or altitude ceilings shown for the location.
  • Check temporary flight restrictions and other time-specific notices on the actual flight date.
  • Do not treat a camera’s ability to record as permission to fly over a location, event, or person. Local, state, property, and privacy rules may impose additional limits beyond the federal FAA rules covered here.

These are operating obligations, not optional tips. A compliant registration can coexist with an illegal flight if the pilot ignores line of sight, aircraft priority, authorization boundaries, or a temporary restriction.

  1. Write down the purpose. Label the flight personal recreation or non-recreational work. If it is for a client, employer, sale, public-safety mission, or other service, evaluate it under Part 107.
  2. Confirm the aircraft weight and category. Weigh the ready-to-fly aircraft as instructed by the manufacturer. A weight at or below 0.55 pounds helps only with the narrow recreational exemption; it never removes Part 107 registration.
  3. Check registration status. Confirm that the recreational inventory entry or individual Part 107 registration is active, that the exterior number is legible, and that the registration category matches the purpose.
  4. Confirm the pilot requirement. Recreational operations need current TRUST proof. Part 107 operations need the appropriate remote-pilot certificate and any current recurrent requirement.
  5. Verify Remote ID. Match the exact aircraft configuration to FAA-accepted compliance information and confirm the correct Remote ID serial number.
  6. Map the location. Check controlled-airspace boundaries, UAS Facility Map limits, airport information, temporary restrictions, and any local rules that affect takeoff or recording.
  7. Request authorization if needed. Use LAANC where the area and request are supported. Use DroneZone when required, allowing for variable manual-processing time. Never substitute a pending request for approval.
  8. Plan the operation. Establish visual-line-of-sight coverage, a route that yields to manned aircraft, a safe launch and recovery area, and a way to land if weather, people, or traffic make the flight unsafe.
  9. Carry proof. Have registration information, TRUST proof or the Part 107 certificate details, and the airspace authorization available to show authorized personnel if requested.
  10. Recheck immediately before takeoff. Airspace status and restrictions are time-specific. Refresh the tools on the flight date instead of relying on a saved map from an earlier day.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“It weighs under 250 grams, so I do not need anything.”

That conclusion is valid only for a drone flown exclusively under the recreational exception. A sub-250-gram aircraft used for paid imaging or another Part 107 operation still must be registered, and the pilot needs the Part 107 qualification.

“My registration covers every use.”

Recreational inventory registration and Part 107 registration are not interchangeable. If the purpose changes, stop and complete the registration path for the new operation before flying.

“The aircraft listing says Remote ID ready.”

Verify the exact model and configuration in the FAA-accepted Declaration of Compliance information. If a broadcast module is proposed, confirm both eligibility and compatibility; a generic module is not automatic proof.

“The airport is nearby but the app did not warn me.”

Use current FAA airspace information and airport guidance. An app alert, or the absence of one, does not replace the pilot’s duty to check controlled airspace, authorization requirements, temporary restrictions, and interference risks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I submitted DroneZone, so I can launch.”

A submission is not an authorization. Wait for the approval that covers the planned operation, and remember that some manually reviewed requests have historically taken up to eight weeks.

“I passed TRUST, so I can take client work.”

TRUST is the recreational test. Client work and other non-recreational operations require the Part 107 route, including the appropriate remote-pilot certificate and per-drone registration.

Keeping a legal setup over time

Compliance is a recurring process rather than a one-time purchase decision. Renew the three-year registration before it expires, update records when the aircraft or Remote ID configuration changes, and retain the documentation associated with each operation. Recheck FAA guidance when a rule, test procedure, or Remote ID declaration changes.

For each new location, repeat the airspace review. The FAA’s general airport explanation was updated April 25, 2024, while the Part 107 authorization page reported an October 1, 2026 update; pair general guidance with the live airspace tools and current restrictions on the flight date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your plans expand from personal footage to paid assignments, do not retrofit the recreational paperwork after the fact. Decide on Part 107 before accepting the work, register each aircraft under that category, verify the pilot certificate and Remote ID, and obtain authorization for controlled airspace when required.

What a legal camera-drone purchase should include

When evaluating a camera drone, treat compliance as a specification to verify rather than a feature to assume. A suitable purchase checklist is:

  • The aircraft’s exact model and configuration can be matched to FAA-accepted Remote ID information.
  • The manufacturer provides the serial identifiers needed for registration, including the Remote ID serial when applicable.
  • The aircraft can be operated within visual line of sight and safely yielded to manned aircraft.
  • The weight is documented so you can determine whether the narrow recreational exemption could apply.
  • The intended mission has been classified before purchase: personal recreation or Part 107 work.

No camera, obstacle sensor, or autonomous mode substitutes for the pilot requirements, registration, Remote ID, or airspace approval. The legal answer comes from the operation and location, not from the marketing name of the aircraft.

Bottom-line decision

For a U.S. recreational flight, determine whether the aircraft exceeds 0.55 pounds, register it when required through FAADroneZone, pass TRUST, mark the registration number, verify Remote ID, and check airspace and restrictions before every launch. For business, paid, public-safety, or other non-recreational work, use the Part 107 path: obtain the remote-pilot certificate, register each drone, meet Remote ID requirements, and secure controlled-airspace authorization when applicable. If any one of those steps is unresolved, postpone the flight until it is.
