To connect a domain to an AI agent or hosted service, complete two separate jobs: register or select the domain, then publish the service’s DNS records at the provider that operates the domain’s authoritative nameservers. Add the hostname in the agent platform, complete any ownership check, enter the exact CNAME, A, TXT or other records it gives you, and wait until the platform verifies them before testing HTTPS. The registrar where you bought the name may not be the place where its live DNS is managed.

Registration and DNS are different jobs

Domain registration gives you control of a name such as example.com. DNS hosting publishes the records that tell browsers and other services where that name should resolve. One company can handle both roles, but it does not have to.

As CustomDomain’s setup guide puts it, “Where a domain is registered and where its DNS is answered are separate things.” A domain can stay at its registrar while its nameservers point to a separate DNS operator. In that case, changes made in the registrar’s apparent DNS editor will not affect the live zone unless the registrar is also the authoritative DNS host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical rule is simple: identify the nameservers first, then edit records in the DNS panel operated by those nameservers. The CustomDomain guide explains this relationship in How to set up a custom domain.

What you need before starting

  • A domain you control, either newly registered or already in use.
  • The exact hostname you want to connect, such as app.example.com, agent.example.com or the apex example.com.
  • Access to the AI agent, hosting or deployment platform’s domain settings.
  • Access to the DNS provider serving the domain’s authoritative nameservers.
  • The platform’s current verification and routing values. Do not substitute a target copied from another vendor or tutorial.
  • An inventory of existing website, email, verification, policy and security records if you intend to change nameservers.

Registration prices, renewal terms, privacy features and the sequence of screens vary by registrar. The available source material does not establish universal pricing or a standard registration interface, so review the selected registrar’s current terms before purchasing.

Choose the hostname: subdomain or apex

Use a subdomain for the lowest-risk connection

A subdomain such as app.example.com is usually the clearest choice for an agent or service. It can normally be connected with a CNAME to the hostname supplied by the platform, while the existing website at example.com remains untouched.

A CNAME does not point to an example value. If the platform displays customer-123.provider.example, enter that exact target, including any required trailing dot behavior handled by the DNS panel. Targets differ between platforms and accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the apex limitation

The apex, also called the root or bare domain, is example.com without a host label. A conventional CNAME cannot occupy the apex because the zone apex must also carry SOA and NS records. To use the apex, choose one of these options:

  • Use a provider-supported apex alias or flattening feature.
  • Enter the exact A record values supplied by the hosting or agent platform.
  • Use a subdomain instead, and redirect or otherwise route the apex according to the platform’s documented design.

Alias features are provider-specific; an alias offered by one DNS operator is not automatically interchangeable with another provider’s implementation. Never invent A records or convert a CNAME target into an address yourself.

Step 1: Register or select the domain

If you do not own a domain

  1. Search for an available name and top-level domain at a registrar you have evaluated.
  2. Confirm the spelling, renewal price, registration period, contact requirements and any privacy options shown at checkout.
  3. Complete registration and sign in to the account that controls the domain.
  4. Record the domain name and the current nameserver delegation before changing anything.

You do not need to move the registration to the same company that hosts DNS. Keeping registration and DNS with separate providers is valid as long as you know which account controls each function.

If you already own the domain

Decide whether the service should use a dedicated subdomain or the apex. Check for existing records before adding anything. A current website, mail service, domain-verification token or security policy can be disrupted by an incorrect edit or an unplanned nameserver move.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Find the authoritative DNS operator

Look up the domain’s NS records with a DNS lookup tool or a command such as dig NS example.com. The returned nameserver hostnames identify the DNS operator whose control panel publishes the live zone. A registrar account may still show a DNS editor even when the domain is delegated elsewhere, so the presence of an editor is not proof that it is authoritative.

For example, if the NS response lists nameservers operated by a managed DNS company, create the CNAME, TXT or A record in that company’s account. If the nameservers remain at the registrar, use the registrar’s DNS panel. When several nameservers are listed, they are normally authoritative together; update the zone at the operator that manages them rather than editing an unrelated provider’s account.

Microsoft’s documentation describes the same separation for Microsoft 365: “If you purchased a domain from a non-Microsoft registrar, you can connect it to Microsoft 365 by updating the DNS records at your registrar.” In practice, that statement assumes the registrar is the active DNS host; if the nameservers were delegated elsewhere, the update belongs at that DNS host. See Connect your domain by adding DNS records.

Step 3: Add the domain in the AI agent or hosting platform

  1. Open the platform’s project, deployment or site settings.
  2. Choose the option labeled Custom domain, Domains, Connect domain or an equivalent current label.
  3. Enter the complete hostname, including the subdomain if you chose one.
  4. Review the platform’s ownership-verification instructions. It may request a TXT challenge or another proof that you control the name.
  5. Copy the requested record name, type and value exactly. Keep the dashboard open because many services show different records for verification and for traffic routing.

Ownership verification and service routing are separate. A TXT token can prove control without directing visitors to the service. After verification, the platform may require a CNAME, A records or an apex-alias configuration to route requests. Some services present both sets of records in one wizard; others expose them in separate stages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents both an automated Domain Connect path, where supported, and a manual path for entering records. These are examples of one service workflow, not a universal interface for every AI platform.

Step 4: Publish the records at the authoritative DNS provider

Typical subdomain CNAME

Field What to enter Important check
Name or host The label requested by the platform, often app, agent or the full hostname depending on the panel Some panels append the domain automatically; avoid creating app.example.com.example.com.
Type CNAME Use CNAME only where the platform requests it and where no conflicting record exists.
Target or value The exact hostname supplied for your project Do not reuse a sample target from another vendor.
TTL The provider’s default unless the platform specifies another value TTL affects caching; it does not fix an incorrect record.

A hostname cannot generally have a CNAME alongside other data records at the same name. If a pre-existing A, AAAA or conflicting CNAME record occupies that label, follow the platform’s instructions before removing it. Preserve unrelated records such as mail records at other names.

TXT ownership challenge

Enter the exact TXT host and token shown by the platform. Do not add quotation marks unless the DNS panel requires them as part of its normal TXT-entry format. Some panels display the host as a full name; others expect only the label. Use the panel’s documented convention and verify the resulting public record.

Apex A records or alias

For example.com, use the exact A values supplied by the service, or select the DNS provider’s documented apex-alias feature. Do not create a conventional apex CNAME. If the service supports only a subdomain, connect app.example.com instead of forcing an unsupported root-domain configuration.

Keep unrelated records intact

Do not delete MX records, SPF or DKIM records, existing verification TXT values, DMARC policies, or records for other applications merely because a new service asks for a DNS change. Remove or replace a record only when the service explicitly identifies it as conflicting and you understand what depends on it.

Automated, manual and nameserver-migration approaches

Approach What happens Best fit Checks before approval
Automated Domain Connect A supported service and DNS provider exchange the requested changes through an integration. A quick setup when both providers support the same integration. Confirm the participating providers, inspect the records the authorization screen will add or change, and approve only the requested scope. The IETF description is a draft protocol, not evidence of a finalized standard: Domain Connect Protocol — draft-ietf-dconn-domainconnect-04.
Manual DNS records You copy the platform’s record names, types and values into the authoritative DNS panel. Any provider combination, including services without an integration. Check NS delegation, use the platform’s current values, and verify that no conflicting record remains.
Nameserver migration or managed DNS You change the domain’s delegation so another DNS operator becomes authoritative. A deliberate move to a different DNS management service. Recreate every required record first, check DNSSEC and DS status, and plan the cutover as a migration rather than as a single record edit.

Step 5: Verify DNS and wait for the service

After saving records, return to the platform dashboard and run its verification action. A connection workflow may show states such as pending, propagating and live. The service should mark the domain live only after its required records resolve from the DNS system it checks.

Verification timing is not universal. DNS caches can cause different resolvers to observe changes at different times, and certificate issuance can happen after ownership and routing checks rather than simultaneously. CustomDomain describes a flow that waits for the desired records to resolve before marking a domain live; its details are documented in Overview — Connect flow. Firebase documents certificate provisioning after its own verification and DNS configuration in Connect a custom domain | Firebase Hosting.

  1. Use a DNS lookup tool to query the intended hostname and confirm the returned type and value match the platform’s instructions.
  2. Check the platform’s domain status again after the record is publicly visible.
  3. Open the hostname over HTTPS, not only HTTP.
  4. Confirm that the expected agent interface or endpoint loads and that a request reaches the intended deployment.
  5. Test from a separate network or resolver if one location still shows an old answer.

Do not promise a fixed propagation or certificate time. The authoritative response, recursive caches, platform checks and certificate provider all affect when the service becomes reachable.

Step 6: Plan a nameserver move safely

Changing NS records moves authority for the entire zone. It is not equivalent to adding one CNAME. Before switching:

  • Export or record the current A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV, CAA and policy records.
  • List every website, email service, verification token, API endpoint and security control that depends on the zone.
  • Build the replacement zone with the same required records, adjusting only values that must change.
  • Check the new provider’s support for DNSSEC, apex aliases and any records your services require.
  • Lowering TTLs may help a planned migration, but it does not replace a complete record inventory.
  • Change delegation only after the replacement zone answers correctly.

DNSSEC and DS records

DNSSEC can make an otherwise correct migration fail validation. The managed-DNS guidance warns that leaving a DS record at the registry while the replacement zone is unsigned can cause validating resolvers to reject responses. Before changing nameservers, determine whether DNSSEC is enabled, whether the new DNS operator can sign the zone, and which party is responsible for updating or removing the DS record. Follow the chosen provider’s current migration procedure; DNSSEC behavior and controls differ between operators. See Managed DNS.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The platform says the record is missing

  • Recheck the domain’s authoritative NS records. You may have edited a non-authoritative panel.
  • Compare the host label. If the panel automatically appends example.com, entering the full name can create a duplicated hostname.
  • Confirm the record type and value character-for-character, including TXT tokens.
  • Check whether the platform expects the apex or a subdomain; these are different names.
  • Allow for resolver caching, then query the public name again from more than one resolver.

The CNAME exists but the service still does not route traffic

  • Make sure the CNAME target is the one generated for your project, not a documentation example.
  • Remove only a record that conflicts at the same hostname and only as the service instructs.
  • Check whether the platform requires a separate TXT ownership record or additional A, AAAA or CAA records.
  • Confirm that the deployment behind the custom domain is active and that the hostname was added to the correct project.

The apex will not accept the CNAME

This is expected behavior for a conventional DNS zone. Use the provider’s supported apex alias, enter the exact A records supplied by the service, or switch to a subdomain. Do not work around the restriction by guessing IP addresses.

HTTPS is not ready

  • Verify that DNS resolves to the intended service before diagnosing the certificate.
  • Check the platform’s domain status for a pending certificate or ownership step.
  • Ensure the hostname is spelled exactly the same in the platform and in DNS.
  • Do not assume that an HTTP response means certificate issuance has completed; test the HTTPS URL after the provider reports success.

Email stopped after a DNS change

Inspect the MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records in the authoritative zone. A nameserver migration that copied only the new agent’s record can remove mail configuration even though the agent itself works. Restore the required mail records from your inventory and follow the mail provider’s current values.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some networks fail while others work

Different recursive resolvers may retain cached answers for different periods. Compare authoritative and recursive lookups, confirm that the new zone is consistent across its nameservers, and avoid repeatedly changing records while caches are still expiring. If DNSSEC is enabled, also investigate a stale or mismatched DS record.

Security and operational checks

  • Use a registrar account protected with multifactor authentication and keep recovery details current.
  • Grant DNS access only to people or automation that need it.
  • Review automated connection screens before authorizing them so you know which records will change.
  • Keep a dated copy of the working DNS zone before migrations or major edits.
  • Preserve verification and email records unless their owners explicitly tell you to replace them.
  • Use HTTPS as the normal public endpoint and verify the certificate at the exact hostname users will visit.
  • Document which account controls registration, nameservers, DNS records and the deployment, so a future operator can troubleshoot without guessing.

A complete example workflow

Suppose your agent platform asks you to connect agent.example.com and supplies a TXT token for ownership plus a CNAME target. The safe sequence is:

  1. Look up the NS records for example.com.
  2. Sign in to the DNS operator identified by those nameservers.
  3. Add agent as a TXT record with the exact verification token.
  4. Add agent as a CNAME pointing to the platform-generated target.
  5. Leave the existing apex website and mail records unchanged.
  6. Return to the platform and run verification.
  7. When it reports that the domain is live, open https://agent.example.com and test the agent.

If you instead need example.com itself, stop before creating a CNAME at the apex. Use the platform’s documented apex method or select the subdomain workflow.

Decision checklist

  • Need the fastest, least disruptive setup? Use a new subdomain and manual records at the current authoritative DNS provider.
  • Do both providers support an approved integration? Automated Domain Connect can reduce copying, but review every requested change.
  • Need to move all DNS management? Treat it as a migration: inventory records, recreate the zone, verify DNSSEC and then change nameservers.
  • Want the bare domain? Confirm apex-alias or exact A-record support first; a normal CNAME is not valid at the apex.
  • Verification succeeds but HTTPS does not? Check routing first, then wait for the platform’s certificate process and test the exact HTTPS hostname.

What “connected” should mean

A domain is properly connected when the service has verified control, the authoritative DNS records resolve to the intended deployment, the platform reports the hostname as active, and the HTTPS endpoint loads without a certificate error. Registration alone does not create that path, and adding a record in the wrong DNS panel does not change the public Internet. Keeping those distinctions clear prevents most failed custom-domain setups.
