To request a refund for an Xbox digital game, open Microsoft’s Xbox refund form, sign in with the Microsoft account that made the purchase, select the order, choose Request a refund, explain why, review the details, and submit. Microsoft says the request can take up to 72 hours to process. Whether the purchase qualifies is decided for that order; the available Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal number of days owned or hours played that guarantees approval.
Use the official Xbox refund form
Microsoft directs Xbox customers to its Request a refund for digital games page. The form is tied to the account and order, so use the Microsoft account that paid for the game. Signing in with a different family member’s account can leave the purchase missing from the list even when the console is the same.
You do not start this process from a retailer’s general return page, a bank dispute form, or a physical-game return policy. The relevant route for a digital game bought from Microsoft is the Xbox Support digital-game request flow. If you bought through another seller or used a different account, the transaction may not appear in this Microsoft order list.
How to submit the request
- Open the Xbox Support digital-game refund page.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy the game, add-on, or other digital item.
- Find and select the relevant order item.
- Select Request a refund.
- Enter the reason for the request, then select Next.
- Check the information shown on the review screen and select Submit.
Save the confirmation or take a screenshot of the submitted request. It gives you a reference point if you need to check the order later. A request is not the same as an approval: submitting the form asks Microsoft to assess that particular transaction.

Before submitting, compare the displayed title with your receipt. Deluxe editions, add-ons and similarly named games can appear as separate order lines. Selecting the wrong line can send Microsoft a request about a different transaction, so correct the selection on the review screen instead of relying on the game’s icon alone.

Microsoft’s wording is conditional: “If you purchased a game or app from Microsoft, you may be able to request a refund.” Its general digital-goods guidance says games and add-on content are normally refundable only when the applicable offer or local law makes the buyer eligible. The practical test is the order-specific refund flow. Sign in, select the purchase, and see whether the item can be sent through Request a refund. The result reflects the account, product, transaction and market details Microsoft has for that order. Two purchases of the same title can therefore produce different results if their accounts, markets, order types or applicable terms differ.
No published universal days-or-hours rule
The public Xbox material reviewed does not provide a universal purchase-age cutoff, gameplay-hour cutoff, or guaranteed approval rule. Do not treat a number copied from another gaming platform as an Xbox policy. The stated 72-hour figure is the time Microsoft allows to process a submitted request, not a 72-hour period in which every purchase automatically qualifies.

A bundle limitation is different from an ordinary rejection. Microsoft’s stated information says an individual component of a bundle cannot be returned by itself, so identify whether the receipt shows one bundled transaction before you submit. If the entire bundle is the order item, select that order rather than trying to create separate requests for each included game or add-on.

The “up to 72 hours” estimate comes from Microsoft’s refund-request instructions. The 3–5-business-day figure is a general processing estimate for refunds after issuance, not a promise for every bank, card, payment service or country. If the status says the refund was issued but your statement does not show it, Microsoft advises allowing a few days for the payment provider.
These clocks begin at different points. The first begins when you submit the request; the second applies only after Microsoft issues a refund. A request that is still under review is not yet in the bank-posting period, and a refund marked issued can still be absent from a statement while the original payment provider processes it.
Check the refund status
- Open Microsoft’s Check the status of your Microsoft Store return or refund instructions.
- Sign in with the account that submitted the request.
- Open Xbox order history and locate the game or other product.
- Read the refund status attached to that order.
Microsoft says it will contact you with updates, and its support instructions also direct you to the Refund status tab. Check the order itself rather than relying only on a bank notification: the store can show that a refund was issued before the payment provider posts the credit.
Keep the order details and submission confirmation together. If you contact support, those details let the representative identify the same transaction instead of opening a second request for a similarly named product. Repeated submissions can make it harder to tell which request is current, so use the existing status entry first.

The game is not listed
- Sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that completed the purchase.
- Compare the account’s Xbox order history with the email receipt or bank record. A console profile and the purchasing account are not always the same.
- Check whether the transaction is still pending, was bought through a different account, or was made in a different market.
- If the item was part of a bundle, remember that Microsoft’s published guidance excludes returning one component by itself.
Do not submit a request for a different order simply because it is the only item visible. The refund decision attaches to the transaction you select. A receipt can also help distinguish a completed Microsoft purchase from a charge made by another seller, which would require that seller’s support process.
The page does not offer online returns
Microsoft states that online return requests are not available in all markets. Use the regional support option presented after signing in, and keep the order number, purchase date, product name and account email available for the support representative. The absence of a button is a market or transaction limitation, not a published promise that the purchase is refundable through another route.
Do not change your account region merely to make a different form appear. Use the market associated with the transaction and ask Microsoft which regional route applies. Local rules can affect the remedies available, and Microsoft specifically states that its return information does not affect remedies under the Australian Consumer Law.

The request is still pending after 72 hours
Seventy-two hours is Microsoft’s stated processing estimate, not an instant-resolution guarantee. Recheck the Refund status entry in Xbox order history and look for Microsoft’s email. If there is no update after the stated window, contact Microsoft Support with the order details and the confirmation of submission rather than opening multiple duplicate requests.

The refund is marked issued but the money is missing
Wait for the payment provider’s posting period. Microsoft’s general guidance says refunds are generally processed within 3–5 business days and applied to the original payment option, while its status guidance says to allow a few days when an issued refund has not appeared. If that period passes, ask the bank or payment service to trace the credit, then return to Microsoft with the order and refund information.
The original payment option matters. Look for the credit on the same card, account or service used for the purchase rather than assuming it will arrive as cash or as a different balance. Provider statements can use a posting date that differs from the date Microsoft marks the refund as issued.
Cancellation, pre-orders and completed purchases
A transaction that has not completed may belong in Microsoft’s cancellation workflow rather than the completed-purchase refund flow. Microsoft provides separate instructions for canceling an order or pre-order from Microsoft Store. Check that page when the order is a pre-order or otherwise still eligible for cancellation.
