To refund a PC game, first identify which store processed the payment, then open that store’s purchase history and submit a request. Steam and Epic Games Store generally use a 14-day window and a limit of less than two hours of playtime or runtime; GOG allows requests up to 30 days after purchase, even if you played the game. These are store policies, not guarantees of approval, and eligibility can depend on the purchase type and your account.

Check the transaction in the account that processed payment: a console or mobile store, or a developer’s own checkout, may have different rules. The store’s current purchase-specific eligibility and final decision control, particularly for bundles, pre-orders, gifts, and consumables.
How to request a refund on Steam
- Sign in to Steam Help and open Purchases.
- Select the game purchase and the problem that best describes your request.
- Choose I’d like to request a refund, complete the form, and select Steam Wallet or the original payment method where available.
- Submit the request and keep the confirmation email.
Valve’s standard guideline is a request within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of playtime. If you fall outside it, you can still submit a request for review; that does not guarantee approval. Steam says approved refunds can take up to seven days to appear. Approved Steam Wallet credit may take 24–48 hours, while international payment methods can take longer. See Steam’s refund FAQ.

A pre-order can be refunded any time before release. After release, the standard two-week period starts on the release date, and the less-than-two-hours rule applies. For a purchase with Advanced Access, the pre-release refund period ends when Advanced Access begins. See Steam’s refund policy.

How to request a refund on GOG
- Sign in to GOG and open your account’s Order History.
- Find the order and select Ask for a refund.
- Follow the support flow and retain the confirmation.
GOG’s voluntary policy allows a request up to 30 days after purchase even if the game was downloaded, launched, and played. GOG may refuse a request in individual cases if it identifies abuse. If the game does not work, GOG asks customers to consider contacting Tech Support first; its help page says that if support cannot resolve the problem after you contact it within the 30-day period, a full refund will be offered. Pre-orders may be refunded during the pre-order period and for 30 days after release. Details are in GOG’s refund instructions and GOG’s refund policy.
How to request a refund on Epic Games Store
- Sign in to the Epic account used to buy the game and open Transactions.
- Select the purchase and check whether it is marked Self-refundable or Refundable.
- For an eligible self-refundable purchase, select Request refund, choose a reason, and submit. If it is marked refundable but has no self-service option, contact Epic Player Support.
- Check the refund destination and payment method. Epic says processing may take up to 30 days depending on the method.
Epic’s PC/Mac policy generally requires a request within 14 days, runtime under two hours, and a purchase marked refundable or self-refundable. Products containing virtual currency or other consumables are usually non-refundable, and gifts are non-refundable. A purchase through a console or third-party mobile store, or through a developer’s own payment provider, follows that seller’s policy instead. Epic also lists bans, terms violations, and abuse as reasons a refund may be unavailable. Review Epic’s refund policy and its eligibility requirements.

What if you played the game or missed the deadline?
Playing does not automatically rule out a refund on every store. GOG’s policy allows requests within 30 days even after download, launch, and play. Steam and Epic apply the less-than-two-hours threshold for their standard PC-game policies, but you can still check the purchase page and submit a request when the ordinary guideline has passed. Steam expressly says it will review out-of-guideline requests; GOG reserves discretion, and Epic’s purchase label and exclusions matter. None of these routes promises approval.

- Confirm the seller on the receipt. Start with the store or payment provider that charged you, not a different storefront where the game may also be sold.
- Use the purchase record. Submit through Steam Purchases, GOG Order History, or Epic Transactions before considering a payment dispute. A charge dispute is not the normal platform refund request.
- Describe the issue accurately. If the game is broken, state what happens; on GOG, consider contacting Tech Support within the stated period.
- Keep the confirmation and monitor the destination. Approval and the time funds take to arrive are separate steps, and the timing depends on the platform and payment method.
Regional rights and policy changes
These policy details reflect English-language, US-facing storefront support pages checked on October 11, 2026. Store rules can change, so use the linked current help pages and the eligibility shown on your transaction. Epic says its policy does not limit EU consumers’ statutory withdrawal rights, though it says a buyer may be asked to waive those rights at purchase. Rights vary by jurisdiction; consult local consumer guidance and the applicable platform terms for regional questions rather than treating store policy as a complete statement of legal rights.
