If 310 of 335 tracked files differ from the repository’s own Prettier rules, the safe fix is a controlled formatting migration—not a casual prettier --write run. Exclude generated artifacts first, coordinate the rewrite as one isolated commit, inspect Tailwind class-order changes, preserve blame history, and make format:check a required CI gate.

What the 310-file mismatch actually means

The repository has a formatting policy, but the policy was not applied consistently. In this case, 310 of 335 files—about 92.5%, normally reported as 93%—differ from the configured output. The mismatch is concentrated in application code rather than one isolated folder:

Extension Files that differ
.tsx 198
.ts 90
.json 17
.mjs 2
.css 1
.md 1
.yaml 1
Total 310

Only 25 files already match. Those files cluster in newer pricing and billing work, which indicates gradual adoption: newer contributors or newer areas followed the configuration, while older code retained earlier conventions. This is formatting drift, not evidence that the code in the 310 files is functionally broken. It is still an engineering problem because every future change can carry two competing styles, produce noisy diffs, and make automated review less trustworthy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Formatting drift has an unusual property: it usually has no production symptom. The application can run while the repository becomes harder to review and maintain. That makes an automated check important. A script that exists but is never run by a pull-request or push workflow is only a manual reminder, not enforcement.

The exact Prettier policy being enforced

Before rewriting anything, treat the configuration as the source of truth. The repository’s settings are:

Option Configured value Effect
semi false Omits semicolons where Prettier controls the statement ending.
trailingComma "es5" Adds trailing commas in the ES5-compatible locations supported by this mode.
singleQuote true Prefers single quotes in JavaScript and TypeScript strings where quoting does not require escaping.
tabWidth 2 Uses two spaces for indentation.
printWidth 100 Targets lines around 100 characters before wrapping.
bracketSpacing true Places spaces inside object literal braces, such as { value }.
arrowParens "always" Keeps parentheses around a single arrow-function parameter.
endOfLine "lf" Normalizes line endings to LF.
Plugin prettier-plugin-tailwindcss Also sorts Tailwind utility classes according to the plugin’s ordering rules.

The plugin matters because its changes are not limited to whitespace. In JSX and TSX, class strings can be reordered. That ordering is normally stylistic, but application code that reads, compares, snapshots, or parses class strings can make assumptions about the original sequence. The 198 affected .tsx files therefore deserve a deliberate review rather than a blind acceptance of every line in the diff.

Why format:check did not stop the drift

The repository already had both format and format:check scripts. The missing piece was execution: no GitHub workflow ran the check. A developer could invoke the script, but a normal push or pull request did not automatically verify that changed files matched Prettier.

That distinction explains how a configuration can be present from the first commit while hundreds of files diverge. Configuration expresses an intention; enforcement creates a repeatable boundary. Without a workflow, adoption depends on each contributor remembering to run a local command, using the same dependency installation, and noticing the result before committing.

There was also no .prettierignore. As a result, the generated lockfile was included in the rewrite set. Generated files can be reproducible without being useful formatting targets: rewriting one can create a large, unrelated diff and obscure the application changes that reviewers need to inspect.

Prepare the repository before touching source files

1. Inventory generated and intentionally excluded files

Start by deciding what belongs under Prettier control. Add the generated lockfile and any other generated artifacts that the project deliberately does not maintain by hand to .prettierignore. Keep the ignore list narrow: source files, configuration files, and documentation should remain included unless the project has a specific reason to exclude them.

Do this before the first formatting run. Otherwise, the lockfile can be rewritten, committed accidentally, and mixed into the same history that is supposed to explain a source-format migration.

2. Check the working tree and active branches

Do not begin a repository-wide rewrite with unrelated edits in progress. Confirm that the working tree is clean or that every existing change is clearly accounted for:

git status --short

The team specifically needs coordination around active WebSocket changes. If those files are being edited at the same time, pause the rewrite, agree on a handoff point, or isolate the formatting work so that functional WebSocket changes cannot be mistaken for formatter output.

3. Confirm the scripts before running them

Use the repository’s existing scripts so local formatting and CI use the same declared configuration:

npm run format
npm run format:check

The first command is the write operation in this project; the second should report whether files already match. Run the check before the migration to establish the current mismatch, then run it again after the rewrite and after any manual conflict resolution.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run the formatting migration as one controlled change

1. Create a dedicated formatting branch

Make the migration easy to review and easy to revert. Do not combine it with feature work, dependency upgrades, refactors, or bug fixes. A formatter-only branch also gives the team a single commit hash that can later be excluded from blame.

2. Apply the configured formatter

After updating .prettierignore, run the existing format script. The expected result is a large diff across the 310 mismatching files and no rewrite of the intentionally ignored lockfile. The 25 already-compliant files should remain unchanged unless the configuration or plugin itself produces a legitimate difference.

3. Inspect the diff by category

Do not review a 310-file diff as one undifferentiated block. Start with a summary:

git diff --stat
git diff --name-only

Then review in this order:

  • Generated artifacts: verify that the lockfile and other ignored outputs are absent.
  • TSX class strings: inspect Tailwind reorderings, especially where code compares or derives behavior from class text.
  • Configuration and data files: check the 17 JSON files and the two MJS files for meaningful structural changes hidden among quote and comma edits.
  • Line endings: confirm that LF normalization did not create unexplained changes in the single CSS, Markdown, or YAML file.
  • Active feature areas: compare files touched by concurrent WebSocket work with the feature branch so no functional edit disappeared during conflict resolution.

4. Resolve exceptional cases deliberately

Prettier should own ordinary formatting. If a file contains generated content, embedded text, or a class-string convention that must remain in a particular order, decide whether the correct remedy is an ignore rule, a narrowly scoped formatter override, or a code change that removes the hidden assumption. Do not hand-edit hundreds of lines merely to make the diff look smaller; that produces a second, less predictable style.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Commit only the formatter output

Once the diff has been reviewed, run the check again and create one formatting-only commit. A single commit reduces the blast radius for review and gives future developers a stable boundary between functional history and mechanical normalization.

Preserve usable history with .git-blame-ignore-revs

A repository-wide formatting commit changes most lines without changing their behavior. If it remains visible to every git blame invocation, future investigators may see the formatter commit instead of the author who introduced the logic. Record the formatting commit hash in .git-blame-ignore-revs immediately after committing it.

The file should contain the complete hash on its own line, optionally preceded by a comment explaining that it is the repository-wide Prettier migration. Developers can configure their local blame command to read this file, and hosting interfaces that support ignored revisions can use the same list. If another intentional formatting migration happens later, add its hash as a separate entry rather than rewriting the old record.

Choose a migration shape that matches the risk

Approach Blast radius History preservation Generated-file handling Enforcement outcome Plugin review
One repository-wide formatting commit Largest immediate diff, but one-time Clear when isolated and added to .git-blame-ignore-revs Requires .prettierignore before the run Works well when followed by a required CI check Review all affected TSX class-order changes in one pass
Directory-by-directory migration Smaller individual diffs, spread over multiple changes Each formatting commit must be documented separately Still requires the ignore file before the first directory Can allow drift between migrated and unmigrated areas unless CI is scoped carefully Plugin effects are easier to isolate but persist longer across the project
Ad hoc formatting of files during feature work Appears small, accumulates unpredictably Formatting and behavior become harder to distinguish Lockfiles or generated outputs can be touched repeatedly Does not solve the missing automated gate Class-order changes are mixed with functional edits

For this repository, the proposed order favors one coordinated formatting commit. Staging the work can make sense when release or branch constraints prevent a full rewrite, but it should be an explicit migration plan rather than an indefinite series of opportunistic edits.

Review Tailwind sorting for semantic assumptions

The Tailwind plugin is the main reason to give the TSX diff special attention. A class list that is only a presentation string can usually be reordered safely. A class list that is compared literally, used as a map key, stored in a snapshot, parsed by custom code, or inspected by a test may have an accidental ordering contract.

Search the affected TSX changes for code that:

  • compares a complete class string with strict equality;
  • splits the string and relies on a particular index;
  • uses class text as an identifier or cache key;
  • builds behavior from the presence and order of utilities;
  • asserts the exact serialized class value in tests or snapshots.

Where such assumptions exist, prefer behavior that tests class membership or rendered output rather than incidental ordering. If changing that code is outside the migration’s scope, document the exception and use the narrowest justified formatter exclusion. The formatting commit should not silently alter application semantics.

Add CI enforcement after the migration

The repair is incomplete until the repository runs format:check automatically on every push and pull request. Add a GitHub workflow step that installs the project’s dependencies and executes the existing script. The workflow should use the same lockfile and configuration that developers use locally; it should not substitute a different Prettier command or a second configuration.

The essential workflow behavior is:

  1. Trigger on pushes and pull requests.
  2. Check out the revision being evaluated.
  3. Install dependencies reproducibly.
  4. Run npm run format:check.
  5. Fail the workflow when Prettier reports a mismatch.

Make that workflow status a required gate for merging. A non-required workflow can report drift while a branch is still merged around it, allowing the mismatch count to grow again. The point of the gate is not to prevent all formatting mistakes through punishment; it is to make the repository’s declared style observable and inexpensive to maintain.

  • Result: npm run format:check passes on the migration commit.
  • Diff quality: the commit contains formatting changes only, with no lost WebSocket or other feature edits.
  • Plugin review: Tailwind class-order changes in affected TSX files were inspected for literal-string assumptions.
  • History: the formatting commit hash is recorded in .git-blame-ignore-revs.
  • Automation: the workflow runs on both pushes and pull requests and is configured as a required check.

After the merge, a clean working tree and a passing check establish the new baseline. Future changes should fail quickly when a file is formatted with a different local setting, rather than allowing another large drift to accumulate silently.

Common failure modes and their fixes

The lockfile changed anyway

Stop and restore the generated file, then add the appropriate lockfile pattern to .prettierignore before rerunning the formatter. Do not hide the change inside the migration commit simply because it is already present.

The diff contains feature changes

Abort the mixed commit, separate the functional work from the formatter branch, and recreate the formatting commit from a clean base. This is especially important when WebSocket code is under active development.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Literal class-string tests fail

Determine whether the failure reflects a real ordering dependency or a brittle assertion. Update the assertion to test the intended behavior when possible; otherwise, document and narrowly exclude the exceptional code rather than disabling the Tailwind plugin globally.

The local check passes but CI fails

Compare dependency installation, configuration files, ignored paths, and line-ending settings between environments. The workflow should invoke the repository’s format:check script so local and CI behavior are defined by the same project command.

CI reports drift after an approved merge

Check whether the workflow is running on the merge commit and whether its status is required. A report that does not block merging cannot prevent the mismatch from returning; fix the branch protection requirement rather than asking contributors to remember another manual step.

The practical conclusion

The 310-file mismatch is best treated as a one-time formatting migration followed by permanent enforcement. First exclude generated outputs, then coordinate a clean formatter-only commit, inspect the Tailwind-sensitive TSX changes, record the commit for blame, and require format:check in CI. That sequence removes the current inconsistency without mixing mechanical edits with product work and prevents the repository from quietly returning to two competing styles.
