Use a Protection Idol to refine armor at the Forge of Potential in Valheim. The Idol must match the armor’s material tier. Refinement can fail, destroying the selected gear and damaging your character, so attempt it only if you accept the risk.
Protection Idol or Battle Idol: choose the one for your gear
Protection Idols are for armor; Battle Idols are for weapons. Match the Idol’s material to the material of the item you want to refine. The guide describing this mechanic does not establish a broader tier chart or exact refinement odds, so check the item and Idol you have rather than assuming any Idol will work.
Find the Forge of Potential
The Forge of Potential is reported in the Mountains biome. A map icon resembling an Idol may appear when you get close. Its precise spawn location is not established. A guide author reported finding it near Moder’s summoning altar in two worlds, but that observation does not show that the Forge always spawns there.

Bring cold protection before searching. The guide suggests frost-resistance mead, a wolf-fur cape, or a wolf-fur armor chestpiece. Also consider your health before attempting a refinement: failure can damage you.

Attempt a refinement
- Bring the Protection Idol and the armor you want to refine in your inventory. Confirm that their materials match.
- Travel to the Forge of Potential in the Mountains and interact with it.
- Select the armor, then choose Attempt Refinement.
- Proceed only if you are willing to risk losing the selected item. The guide recommends approaching at full health.
What happens if refinement fails?
The guide reports that a failed attempt destroys the selected gear and damages the player. It says the gear’s crafting materials are returned, but the Forge cannot recraft the lost item. Returned materials therefore do not replace the item itself: you must decide whether the chance of an upgrade is worth losing that gear.
What can an upgrade change?
One example published by PC Gamer guide author Christopher Livingston on September 10, 2026, describes a bronze sword gaining 50 durability points, with slash damage changing from 41 (11–24) to 47 (13–27), and block force increasing from 25 to 30. Other stats reportedly stayed the same. This is a single reported result, not a guaranteed outcome or a complete formula for refinement.
