Use the refill procedure for your exact Epson EcoTank model. EcoTank printers do not all use the same tank covers, bottle caps, filling ports, or screen prompts. Before opening a bottle, read the model’s Epson user guide, verify the bottle part number and color, and stop at the tank’s upper line. On newer keyed systems, ink should stop automatically; if flow does not start, Epson’s documented action is to lift and reinsert the bottle once. Epson’s reviewed manuals do not describe a universal method for removing air bubbles, so do not shake, squeeze, inject ink, pull tubes, or repeatedly reinsert a bottle as a bubble cure.
What to check before opening an ink bottle
The EcoTank name alone does not identify compatible ink. Find the complete printer model number on the front, rear label, or printer menu, then open the Epson user guide for that model and region. Confirm the bottle’s part number, color, and any regional suffix before you remove its cap. A bottle that fits another EcoTank can still be the wrong formulation or color for yours.
For example, one Epson model-specific guide lists T544320-AL for magenta and T544420-AL for yellow. Those numbers belong to that guide’s printer family; they are examples, not universal EcoTank SKUs. Buy a genuine Epson bottle or another bottle explicitly identified for your exact model, color, and region.
Identify the filling design
Look at the tank and bottle interface before you plan the refill. Older designs generally use an open tank cap. You prepare the bottle by removing specified seals or caps, pour while watching the level, and stop manually at the upper line. Some older printers have a detachable tank unit; Epson warns not to pull the ink tubes when handling it.

Newer keyed designs use a color-coded bottle and a matching filling port. The bottle must be oriented correctly and should not be forced. On these models, the bottle and port are designed to fill the tank and stop at the upper line automatically.
| Feature | Older bottle-cap design | Keyed bottle design |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | Open tank cap; bottle is prepared according to the manual and ink is poured into the tank. | Color-coded bottle mates with a keyed filling port in the correct orientation. |
| How filling stops | You watch the level and stop at the upper line. | The documented models stop flow automatically at the upper line. |
| If ink does not flow | Check the model’s preparation and pouring steps; do not improvise with tubes or pressure. | Lift and reinsert the bottle once as Epson directs. Do not repeat this after the tank reaches the upper line. |
| Spill controls | Protect the work surface, handle removed caps carefully, close the tank tightly, and store leftover ink upright. | Keep the bottle upright, do not shake or squeeze it, keep its open tip from striking objects, and do not leave it inserted. |
These are representative differences among the cited Epson families, not a rule for every EcoTank generation. Your model guide takes precedence.
Supplies and a safe refill setup
- The correct Epson bottle part number and color for your printer.
- Your printer’s Epson user guide, open to the refill section.
- A stable, level work area with enough light to see the upper line.
- A protective sheet under or around the refill area if the guide recommends one.
- Disposable gloves if you want extra protection from stains; Epson recommends them in the cited instructions for some models.
- A dry cloth and a damp cloth or damp towel for a spill, following the cleaning method in your model’s guide.
Keep the bottle upright from the time you open it. Do not shake or squeeze it. On the ET-2720/L3160 instructions, Epson says not to touch the bottle top after removing the cap and not to let the open top hit another object, because ink can spill. Put the printer where a small spill will not reach clothing, paper, carpet, or electronics.

One Epson guide instructs users to let a bottle brought in from cold storage sit at room temperature for three hours before use. This is a model-specific handling instruction, not a universal waiting period. Follow the time and conditions in your own guide; do not heat the bottle or place it in direct sun.
Step-by-step: refill a keyed EcoTank without forcing ink
Use this sequence only when your model has the keyed bottle-and-port system described in its guide. The illustrations and labels in the guide are the authority if they differ from these general steps.
- Open the exact model guide. Confirm the printer model, bottle part number, color, and any preparation or menu prompts before opening the tank.
- Prepare the work area. Place the protective sheet recommended by the guide, put on gloves if desired, and keep the bottle upright.
- Start the printer’s refill workflow if it has one. Some Epson procedures begin at Maintenance > Fill Ink and ask you to review precautions. Other models simply have you open the tank cover. Do not assume that this menu path exists on every EcoTank.
- Open only the tank you are filling. Match the bottle’s color to the tank label. Check the label again before removing the bottle cap.
- Open the bottle carefully. Do not shake or squeeze it. Keep the open tip from touching the printer, table, or another object.
- Insert the bottle in the illustrated orientation. A keyed bottle should seat only when its color and shape match the port. Never force it, twist it aggressively, or use a tool.
- Wait for flow. Keep the bottle upright and leave it in place while ink enters the tank. On the covered keyed models, filling stops at the upper line.
- If flow does not start, lift and reinsert once. This is Epson’s documented response for the applicable keyed systems. Do not pull an ink tube, squeeze the bottle, shake it, or repeatedly remove and insert it.
- Stop at the upper line. If the ink has reached that line, do not reinsert the bottle to improve flow or address a suspected bubble. Epson warns that reinsertion after the tank is full can allow ink to leak.
- Finish the refill. Remove the bottle when full, close the tank cap securely, replace and tighten the bottle cap, and close the printer’s tank cover. Do not leave a bottle inserted while you perform another task.
- Store leftover ink upright. Follow the guide’s storage directions and keep the bottle away from children, pets, heat, and items that could be stained.
- Update the displayed ink level if prompted. Some EcoTanks estimate ink use rather than directly measuring the liquid in the tank. If the printer asks you to reset or confirm a level after refilling, complete that model-specific step.
Step-by-step: older open-cap EcoTank designs
Older printers can require a different preparation sequence. The following is a checklist for understanding the procedure, not a replacement for your model’s illustrations.

- Confirm the exact bottle part number and color.
- Open the tank cover and the specific tank cap identified by the guide.
- Prepare the bottle by removing the seals, cap, or other protective pieces in the order shown. Do not improvise by piercing a seal or cutting the nozzle.
- Pour with the bottle positioned as illustrated, keeping the opening controlled and the printer level.
- Watch the liquid level continuously and stop at the upper line. There is no automatic-stop assumption for this design.
- Close the tank cap and tank cover firmly, then recap and store the bottle upright.
- If the tank is a detachable unit, handle the unit itself. Epson warns not to pull the ink tubes.
- Perform any ink-level reset or confirmation that the printer displays.
Because cap, seal, and tank-unit designs vary, never apply the keyed-bottle lift-and-reinsert instruction to an older open-cap printer unless its own guide says to do so.
What Epson’s instructions actually say about air bubbles
The Epson manuals reviewed for these model families do not provide a general procedure for removing air bubbles from an EcoTank reservoir or ink path. They do not establish that shaking a bottle, squeezing it, injecting ink, pulling a tube, or repeatedly reseating a bottle will clear a bubble. Those actions can create spills, leaks, or damage.
On an applicable keyed-fill model, lifting and reinserting the bottle once is documented as a response to ink that has not started flowing. That is a flow-start instruction for the covered models, not a universal air-bubble treatment. Once the tank reaches the upper line, do not repeat the insertion because ink may leak.
If you see a small pocket of air but the tank is at the upper line and the printer operates normally, do not disturb the bottle or overfill the tank. If printing problems continue, use the maintenance and nozzle-check procedures in the exact model guide rather than attempting an unapproved tank or tube intervention. The guide may identify a model-specific priming or cleaning operation; do not assume one exists or use a procedure from another EcoTank family.
How to prevent spills
Before filling
- Verify model, part number, color, and bottle orientation before opening anything.
- Cover the work surface if the guide recommends it.
- Keep clothing, documents, and electronics away from the tank.
- Place the bottle where it cannot be knocked over while you open the tank.
While filling
- Keep the bottle upright.
- Do not shake or squeeze the bottle.
- Do not let the open tip hit an object.
- Do not force a keyed bottle into a port.
- Do not leave a bottle inserted after filling.
- Stop at the upper line; more ink is not safer or better.
After filling
- Close the tank cap and cover securely.
- Recap the bottle tightly and store it upright.
- Wipe any visible ink before it spreads.
- Complete the model’s displayed ink-level update.
What to do if ink spills
Act immediately and use the cleaning instruction for your model and surface. In one general Epson guide, the sequence is to blot with a dry cloth and then wipe with a damp cloth so the ink does not spread. Another cited guide advises immediate wiping with a damp towel. These directions differ, so follow the applicable manual rather than scrubbing aggressively or applying an unlisted chemical.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The bottle will not fit
Stop. Recheck the color, bottle part number, and model guide. A keyed interface is intentionally shaped to prevent an incorrect bottle from being inserted. Do not force, sand, modify, or transfer ink to another container.
Ink does not flow from a keyed bottle
Confirm that the bottle is upright and correctly aligned, then lift and reinsert it once if the guide for your model gives that instruction. Do not squeeze or shake it. If the tank is already at the upper line, do not reinsert it; close the tank and consult the model’s support instructions.
The tank appears full but the printer still shows a low level
Some printers estimate consumption instead of measuring tank contents directly. Complete the ink-level reset or confirmation requested on the printer. Use the physical tank level and the model guide together; do not keep adding ink solely to change an on-screen estimate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Ink leaks after filling
Stop adding ink, remove the bottle only if the guide permits it, close the tank cap, and wipe the spill using the model’s instructions. A leak can result from overfilling, reinserting a bottle after the upper line, a loose cap, or an incorrect bottle/interface. Do not continue printing if ink has reached internal electronics.
You are unsure whether the bottle is compatible
Do not open it. Compare the complete printer model, color, part number, and region with Epson’s guide or support information. EcoTank branding is not sufficient to establish compatibility.
Before you buy or begin: a quick decision checklist
- Write down the full model number, including letters and regional characters.
- Locate the refill section in the matching Epson guide, not a guide for a similar-looking printer.
- Confirm every color you intend to replace and the exact part number printed for that color.
- Check whether your printer uses a keyed port, an open cap, or a detachable tank unit.
- Look for any model-specific preparation, room-temperature, menu, or ink-level-reset instruction.
- Have a protective sheet and cloths ready before opening a bottle.
This checklist prevents the most expensive mistake: opening an incompatible bottle and then trying to transfer ink into the correct container. Genuine Epson ink bottles are the simplest choice when available, but even a genuine bottle must match the printer model, color, and region. Do not assume that one listing or one bottle family serves every EcoTank.

After the refill: verify before printing a large job
Once the cap and cover are closed, inspect the tank around the upper line and look for wetness around the port or cap. If the guide requires an on-screen confirmation or ink-level update, complete it before relying on the displayed estimate. A physical tank can look adequately filled while the printer continues showing an old estimate until that step is completed.
Use the printer’s own maintenance options if the first print shows a problem. A nozzle check or other cleaning operation may be specified for your model, but the names, order, and cautions differ. Do not open the tank again merely because a screen estimate has not changed, and do not use a tube-priming method copied from another EcoTank family.

- Which ink bottle fits my Epson EcoTank? The bottle whose Epson part number and color are specified for your exact model and region.
- Can I use the same refill method on every EcoTank? No. Tank caps, bottle preparation, keyed ports, automatic stopping, and menu prompts differ by model family.
- Should I shake the bottle to mix the ink? No. Epson’s cited instructions say not to shake or squeeze it.
- Should I keep reinserting the bottle until every bubble disappears? No. The one-time lift-and-reinsert instruction applies to no-flow situations on applicable keyed models, not to bubble removal; reinsertion after the upper line can cause a leak.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I refill an Epson EcoTank without spilling ink?
Identify the exact model and matching bottle first, protect the work surface, keep the bottle upright, match the color, and follow that model’s illustrated procedure. Never shake or squeeze the bottle, force a keyed port, or fill beyond the upper line. Close the tank and bottle promptly when finished.
Why is ink not flowing from my Epson bottle?
For a keyed-fill model, confirm the bottle is upright and correctly aligned, then lift and reinsert it once if the Epson guide gives that instruction. Do not squeeze, shake, pull tubes, or repeatedly reseat it. If the tank is already at the upper line, do not reinsert the bottle because it may leak.
How do I remove air bubbles from an EcoTank?
Epson’s cited manuals do not give a universal bubble-removal procedure. Do not shake, squeeze, inject ink, pull tubes, or repeatedly insert the bottle. The single lift-and-reinsert step is a documented no-flow response for certain keyed models, not a general bubble cure.

What should I do if I overfill the tank?
Stop immediately at the upper line and do not add more. Close the tank cap and cover as the guide shows, wipe any spill using the model’s cleaning instructions, and contact Epson support if ink has reached internal parts.
Do I need to reset the ink level after refilling?
Some EcoTanks estimate ink use rather than directly measuring tank contents. If your printer displays a reset or confirmation prompt, complete that model-specific step and use the physical tank level as well as the screen estimate.
What if I spill Epson printer ink?
Wipe it promptly according to the applicable guide. One Epson instruction says to blot with a dry cloth and then wipe with a damp cloth; another says to wipe immediately with a damp towel. Do not scrub aggressively or apply an unlisted chemical.
How long should a cold ink bottle sit before filling?
One Epson guide specifies three hours at room temperature for a bottle brought from cold storage. That timing is model-specific. Follow your own guide and never heat the bottle or place it in direct sunlight.
The Bottom Line
Refill only by the instructions for your exact EcoTank model. Match the bottle part number and color, keep the bottle upright, use the correct keyed or open-cap method, and stop at the upper line. For a qualifying keyed model, lift and reinsert the bottle once if flow does not start; never repeat insertion after the tank is full. Epson does not document a universal air-bubble cure, so avoid shaking, squeezing, tube pulling, injections, and overfilling.
