Use Canon GI-21 bottles for the PIXMA G3270: GI-21 PGBK pigment black (135 ml) and GI-21 C, M, and Y dye-based cyan, magenta, and yellow bottles (70 ml each). The bottle nozzles are color-keyed to fit the corresponding tank. For the exact cap-opening sequence, bottle position, fill limit, and cleanup steps, open the G3070-series online manual from Canon’s PIXMA G3270 support page before you start. Canon’s G3270 support listing identifies that manual, but the model-specific refill section and fill-line instructions are not reproduced here, so no responsible guide should guess them.
A spill-free refill is a handling goal, not a guarantee. Prepare a level, protected work area, identify every bottle by its GI-21 label and color, and follow the manual exactly. Do not squeeze, tip, pierce, or otherwise activate a bottle unless the G3070-series manual explicitly directs that action.
Which ink does the Canon PIXMA G3270 use?
The G3270 uses Canon’s GI-21 four-color ink family. The black bottle is GI-21 PGBK and contains pigment-based black ink. The color bottles are GI-21 C (cyan), GI-21 M (magenta), and GI-21 Y (yellow), all dye-based. Canon lists all four bottles as compatible with the PIXMA G3270.

| GI-21 C | Dye-based cyan | 70.0 ml | Cyan tank |
| GI-21 M | Dye-based magenta | 70.0 ml | Magenta tank |
| GI-21 Y | Dye-based yellow | 70.0 ml | Yellow tank |
Canon describes the GI-21 bottles as having uniquely shaped, color-keyed nozzles intended to fit only the matching ink tank. Treat that physical key as a safeguard, not as permission to force a bottle into a tank. Confirm the printed color and code before opening any bottle.

Why is the black bottle larger?
The listed package sizes are different by design: PGBK black is 135.0 ml, while each color is 70.0 ml. The larger black bottle does not mean black ink belongs in a color tank or that a color bottle can substitute for PGBK. Use the code and color marking, not bottle size or the bottle’s position in a package, to identify the ink.
What does pigment black versus dye color mean for a refill?
For this printer, the distinction is an identification aid. GI-21 PGBK is the pigment-based black formulation; GI-21 C, M, and Y are dye-based color formulations. Keep those categories separate. Do not dilute, combine, or transfer ink between bottles, and do not try to make up a partly used bottle with another formulation.
What to have ready before opening a bottle
- The correct Canon GI-21 bottle or bottles for the tanks that need ink.
- The Canon PIXMA G3270 support page and its linked G3070-series online manual, opened on a phone, tablet, or computer.
- A level surface with enough room to stand the bottle and printer securely.
- Disposable nitrile gloves and clothing or an apron that can tolerate ink.
- Several lint-free towels or absorbent paper, plus a sealable bag for used towels.
- A sheet of plastic, a tray, or several layers of newspaper to protect the work surface.
- Good lighting so the tank color, bottle label, and tank level are easy to see.
Keep food, drinks, children, and pets away from the work area. Do not refill immediately after moving the printer; place it on a stable surface and let it sit as directed by Canon’s manual. Keep each bottle upright until the manual tells you how it is to be positioned.
Set up an identification area
Place only the bottle for the target color in front of you. Keep the other three bottles closed and physically separated. This simple arrangement reduces the chance of picking up cyan when you intended magenta, particularly when the bottles have the same 70 ml size. If you are refilling several tanks, finish, close, and inspect one color before bringing out the next.
Verify the bottle and tank match
Read the complete bottle label
Before removing a seal or cap, read the code and color on the bottle. A correct set has one GI-21 PGBK bottle and one bottle each for GI-21 C, GI-21 M, and GI-21 Y. The black bottle is larger because Canon lists 135 ml for PGBK versus 70 ml for each color. Volume alone is not a substitute for reading the code.
Identify the tank by its printed color
Locate the corresponding color marking on the G3270’s integrated tanks. Match black to PGBK, cyan to C, magenta to M, and yellow to Y. Work on one color at a time and keep the other bottles capped and upright. Never rely only on where a tank sits in the printer, since an arrangement can look different from a diagram or photograph.

Do not use a “close enough” substitute
The fact that a bottle nozzle is keyed does not establish compatibility with another Canon series or a third-party formulation. The confirmed G3270 family is GI-21. If the code, color, seal, or bottle shape does not match, stop and verify it through Canon before opening the bottle.
Find the model-specific refill instructions first
Canon’s G3270 support page lists the G3070-series online manual; the page listing is dated August 21, 2025. Open that manual and navigate to its ink-tank or ink-refilling section before touching the printer. Use the model selector or product heading to ensure the instructions apply to your G3270, not merely to an unrelated MegaTank series.
The manual is the authority for details that vary by model, including the order of operations, how the tank cover and cap are opened, how the bottle is activated or held, the permitted fill line, and what to do if ink drips. Those details were not verified in the G3270 material used for this guide. Copying a procedure from another Canon printer can cause an overfill, a poor seal, or a spill.
What the manual must answer
- Whether the printer must be powered on or off and what cover position Canon specifies.
- Which tank cover and individual cap to open first.
- How the GI-21 bottle’s keyed nozzle is aligned and whether the bottle is activated in a particular way.
- The exact fill line or stopping point for a partially empty tank.
- How to withdraw and close the bottle without leaving the nozzle open.
- How to close the tank, handle a drip, and confirm the printer is ready afterward.
If the online manual is unavailable, postpone the refill rather than relying on a generic video. Other Canon MegaTank models may use a different cap, vent, or stopping procedure.
A cautious, no-spill refill workflow
The following workflow separates preparation and verification from model-specific actions. Whenever a step concerns a cap, bottle position, fill line, or printer control, use the wording and illustrations in Canon’s G3070-series manual rather than improvising.
- Prepare the printer and surface. Put the G3270 on a level, protected surface with the power and cover state specified by the manual. Arrange towels within reach, but do not place loose towels over an open tank where fibers could fall in.
- Confirm the target color. Check the tank’s printed color and the bottle’s GI-21 code twice. Set the other bottles aside, upright and closed.
- Inspect the bottle. Do not use a bottle with a damaged seal, cracked neck, leaking cap, or label that cannot be read. Wipe exterior dust from the bottle without disturbing its nozzle or seal.
- Open only the parts the manual identifies. Follow Canon’s specified order for the printer’s tank cover and cap. Do not pull on an unlisted component or leave an opened tank unattended.
- Use the keyed nozzle as intended. Align the matching GI-21 nozzle with the color tank exactly as shown in the manual. If it does not seat naturally, stop; never force it, twist it aggressively, or try another color.
- Control the transfer without improvising. Follow the manual’s instruction for activating, holding, or dispensing the bottle. Do not squeeze or tip it based on a generic refill video. Keep your face and clothing away from the opening and keep one hand ready to stabilize the bottle or printer.
- Watch the tank level continuously. Stop at the manual’s stated fill limit. Do not top off to the neck, guess from the bottle’s remaining volume, or continue because the tank appears to accept more ink. An overfilled tank can leak inside the printer.
- End the transfer before moving anything. Use the manual’s method for ending flow and withdrawing the bottle. Keep the bottle upright as soon as Canon’s instructions permit, and keep its cap or closure available.
- Close and secure the tank. Replace the tank cap and cover in the order and orientation shown by Canon. Check that the closure is fully seated without forcing it.
- Inspect for drips. Look around the nozzle, tank opening, and printer exterior. Blot a small drop with a lint-free towel; do not smear ink across sensors, contacts, or moving parts. Bag contaminated towels before resuming.
- Repeat one color at a time. If more than one tank needs ink, close and inspect the first tank before preparing the next bottle. Keep colors physically separated while you work.
- Finish with the manual’s printer checks. Perform any ink-level confirmation, print-head maintenance, or test-print procedure Canon specifies. Do not start an unlisted cleaning cycle merely because the first page is not perfect.
How to reduce spill risk in practice
Keep the work controlled
Use a tray or plastic sheet with a raised edge if available, and keep the printer far enough from the edge of the table that a bumped bottle cannot fall. Put the bottle cap somewhere clean and visible rather than on an inked towel. Work slowly enough to keep the nozzle aligned; rushing is more likely to create a drip than pausing to read the next manual illustration.

Protect the printer from contamination
Do not insert towels, cotton swabs, tools, or fingers into the tank. If ink reaches an area the manual does not identify as cleanable, stop and consult Canon support instead of dismantling the printer. Keep the bottle nozzle from touching the table or another color bottle.
Respond to a drip without spreading it
Stop the transfer using the manual’s method, stabilize the bottle, and close the tank as directed. Blot rather than wipe. Separate the wet towel from clean supplies and inspect the tank and surrounding plastic before powering or moving the printer. If ink has entered the printer body, reached electrical contacts, or continues to leak after the tank is closed, do not keep printing; contact Canon support for model-specific advice.
How much printing should a full set provide?
Canon’s published yields are estimates for a full replacement set, not a promise for every household. In default mode, Canon lists up to 6,000 black-and-white pages and up to 7,700 color pages. In economy mode, it lists up to 7,600 black-and-white pages and up to 8,100 color pages.

|---|---|---|---|
| Default | Up to 6,000 pages | Up to 7,700 pages | Manufacturer estimate for a full replacement set |
| Economy | Up to 7,600 pages | Up to 8,100 pages | Different print assumptions; not a guaranteed range |
These figures are Canon estimates and vary with page content, coverage, print settings, maintenance, and other use conditions. They describe the expected output from a full replacement set; they do not tell you how many pages remain when one tank is partially filled. Economy mode shows a larger quoted black-and-white yield than default mode, while the quoted color increase is smaller. That difference reflects Canon’s test assumptions, not a promise that every document will produce the same result.
Do not use the page numbers to decide whether an overfilled tank is safe. The physical tank level and the manual’s fill limit take priority over any yield estimate.
What if the printer still reports low ink?
A refill does not necessarily make a depleted tank appear full in software. Follow the G3070-series manual’s instructions for confirming the tank level and clearing or acknowledging an ink warning, if such a procedure is provided. Do not reset a warning blindly or continue printing when the physical tank is below Canon’s required level. A low-ink message, an empty-looking tank, and poor print quality are different conditions and may require different actions.

Ink formulation and color mistakes to avoid
- Do not put pigment black in a color tank. GI-21 PGBK is pigment-based, while C, M, and Y are dye-based.
- Do not swap the three color bottles. Cyan, magenta, and yellow are separate inks even though their bottles have the same listed 70 ml volume.
- Do not dilute or mix inks. The confirmed system is specified around the GI-21 formulation; adding water or another ink changes the system Canon designed.
- Do not assume a bottle from another printer is acceptable. Verify the GI-21 code and G3270 compatibility before opening it.
- Do not force a keyed nozzle. A nozzle that does not align naturally is a reason to stop and recheck the color and model.
- Do not estimate the fill line from bottle size. The 135 ml and 70 ml package volumes are not tank-fill instructions.
If the wrong color has entered a tank, stop before printing and contact Canon support. Flushing or disassembling the system without the model’s instructions can spread the contamination and create additional damage.
Can Canon’s automatic replenishment option help?
Canon lists the G3270 as capable of its Automatic Replenishment System. That indicates the printer may be eligible for a Canon replenishment service, but eligibility, enrollment terms, current availability, and any offer are separate questions. Do not assume the service is active for your account or region. For an immediate refill, identify and purchase the compatible Canon GI-21 bottle for the color you need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Warranty considerations
Canon’s U.S. warranty language addresses non-Canon or refilled ink when it causes damage or results in abnormally frequent service issues. That is narrower than saying third-party ink automatically voids the entire warranty. Keep the GI-21 packaging and purchase record, follow the manual, and document any leak or error before requesting service. If a service issue is unrelated to ink, the warranty wording does not establish that it is automatically excluded.
When to stop and get help
Stop the refill and use Canon support if the bottle will not align naturally, a seal is damaged, the tank cannot be closed, ink continues to seep, the printer shows an error after the tank is secured, or the wrong ink may have entered a tank. Have the printer model, bottle code, affected color, and a description of what happened available. Do not keep testing by printing large jobs; that can move spilled or mismatched ink farther through the ink path.

Can I use a GI-21 color bottle in any color tank?
No. Match cyan to C, magenta to M, and yellow to Y. The three color bottles are each 70 ml, but equal volume does not make them interchangeable.
How much ink is in each GI-21 bottle?
Canon lists 135.0 ml for GI-21 PGBK black and 70.0 ml for each GI-21 C, M, and Y color bottle.
What is the exact G3270 fill line?
Verify it in Canon’s G3070-series online manual linked from the G3270 support page. The exact model-specific fill limit should not be guessed from bottle size or a generic video.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I squeeze or tip the bottle to make ink flow?
Only if Canon’s G3070-series manual explicitly directs that action. Otherwise keep the bottle handling and activation method exactly as Canon illustrates.
What should I do if a bottle nozzle will not fit?
Stop immediately. Recheck the GI-21 code, color label, and G3270 compatibility. Never force or aggressively twist a keyed nozzle.
Are Canon’s 6,000- and 7,700-page figures guaranteed?
No. They are estimates for a full replacement set. Canon lists up to 6,000 black-and-white and 7,700 color pages in default mode, and up to 7,600 and 8,100 in economy mode. Actual output varies with content, settings, maintenance, and other conditions.
Does third-party or refilled ink automatically cancel the warranty?
Canon’s U.S. warranty language addresses non-Canon or refilled ink when it causes damage or abnormally frequent service issues. It does not state that every use of third-party ink automatically voids the entire warranty.
What if I put the wrong color in a tank?
Stop printing and contact Canon support. Do not flush or dismantle the ink system unless Canon gives model-specific instructions.
The Bottom Line
For a PIXMA G3270, use the matching Canon GI-21 bottle: PGBK black, C cyan, M magenta, or Y yellow. Protect the work area, refill one color at a time, and let the G3070-series Canon manual—not a generic video—determine the cap sequence, bottle handling, and fill limit. Treat spill-free handling as a goal, never force a nozzle, and stop for Canon support if ink leaks or colors are mixed.
