There is no single fix for crypto fraud, and getting stolen funds back is not guaranteed. You can reduce your risk by verifying investment claims and exchange alerts through channels you find independently, protecting your account details, and reporting suspected fraud quickly. If someone promises guaranteed recovery for an upfront fee, treat that as another warning sign.
How widespread are reported crypto losses?
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) recorded 181,565 cryptocurrency-related complaints and $11.366 billion in reported losses in 2025. Within that total, it recorded 61,559 cryptocurrency investment-fraud complaints and $7.228 billion in reported losses.
These are U.S. complaint figures, not a complete count of fraud or a measure of every person’s risk. They show what people reported to IC3; they do not establish the total amount lost across the country.
How do crypto scams work?
Fraud can arrive as an investment pitch, a warning about an account, or an offer to help after money has gone missing. The details differ, but a convincing message, a professional-looking site, or a displayed account balance is not independent proof that an investment or exchange activity is genuine.

What the SEC has alleged in a social-media scheme
In a December 22, 2025 announcement, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) described a complaint alleging a scheme that began with social-media ads, moved into WhatsApp investment groups, and used supposed AI-generated tips and fake trading platforms. The SEC said the complaint alleged that at least $14 million was misappropriated and that victims faced advance-fee demands when trying to withdraw. These are allegations in an enforcement complaint, not a final adjudication.
Why apparent market activity can mislead
In an October 2024 enforcement announcement, the SEC alleged that purported market makers used wash trading and other activity with no economic purpose to create the false appearance of an active market. A busy-looking market or professional interface is not proof of genuine demand.

How can you verify an investment offer or exchange alert?
- Pause before responding. Do not act on an unsolicited investment recommendation, group-chat pitch, or urgent account-compromise warning just because it sounds knowledgeable or time-sensitive.
- Separate verification from the message. Do not click its links or call numbers it provides. Navigate to the exchange’s official website independently or use contact information you already have.
- Keep credentials private. Never give account login information to an unsolicited caller or message. A contact’s knowledge of your name, account details, or recent activity does not establish that the contact is genuine.
- Check the investment independently. Do not rely on a friend, romantic contact, group-chat member, displayed balance, or apparent trading activity as proof that a platform or offering is real.
- Stop if the story changes at withdrawal. A demand for an advance payment to release funds is a reason to pause and verify through an independently located official channel, not to send more money automatically.
What should you do after a suspected crypto loss?
Report the incident promptly and preserve the information that can help describe what happened. A report does not guarantee reimbursement, and the evidence here does not establish a universal recovery process. Avoid anyone who contacts you with a guaranteed way to get funds back, claims special government access, or charges an investigation fee.

- Save the initial messages and contact details, including usernames, phone numbers, email addresses, and any site or platform identifiers.
- Record transaction dates, amounts, payment types, and the relevant account or receiving-institution details.
- Include cryptocurrency wallet addresses when available, along with transaction records that help identify the transfers.
Report to IC3
Submit a complaint to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and include the concrete contact and transaction details above. Be precise about what happened and what you can document. The FBI warns that fictitious law firms may target people who have already been scammed, so treat later recovery offers as a separate risk rather than as proof that the first report has produced a remedy.

Is there a way out?
There is no single remedy that prevents every crypto scam or guarantees recovery after a transfer. The practical way to reduce exposure is to verify independently before sending money or sharing information, treat urgency and unsolicited promises with caution, and report suspected fraud with records that can help investigators understand the transaction.
