You can reduce optional diagnostic data, limit some ad personalization, review app permissions, and uninstall apps you do not use in Windows 11. These settings do not switch off every data flow to Microsoft: required diagnostics and other services remain outside the scope of some controls.

What Windows 11 privacy settings can—and cannot—do

Windows separates required diagnostic data from optional diagnostic data. Required data supports functions such as security, updates, compatibility, and reliability; choosing not to send optional diagnostics reduces that additional category, rather than disabling all telemetry. Microsoft describes these categories in its Windows diagnostic data overview.

The controls below have specific scopes. Advertising ID is not a universal ad blocker, app permissions do not govern every desktop program, and uninstalling an app is not a general-purpose way to remove Windows system components. Microsoft’s documentation describes these controls, but does not establish a single switch that blocks every Windows connection or service-side data flow.

How to disable optional telemetry in Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.

  2. Under diagnostic data options, choose Required diagnostic data rather than Optional diagnostic data, if both choices are available. This limits optional diagnostic collection; required data remains.

  3. Review the other options on the page, including tailored experiences and feedback prompts, and turn off those you do not want. Labels and availability can vary by Windows release and by organization policy.

Microsoft’s documentation lists Windows 11 versions 25H2, 24H2, 23H2, and 22H2 for its optional diagnostic-data guidance. On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator may set or restrict these options, so the choices shown in Settings can differ.

Review diagnostic data on the device

If diagnostic-data viewing is enabled, the Diagnostic Data Viewer lets you inspect diagnostic data available on that device. It is not a complete view of information associated with your Microsoft account or of every service-side data flow. Microsoft explains the viewer and its requirements in its Diagnostic Data Viewer overview.

The Delete diagnostic data control on the Diagnostics & feedback page requests deletion of diagnostic data associated with the device. It does not stop future transmission, and it does not delete data associated with a Microsoft account.

How to limit personalized offers and advertising

On newer Windows 11 releases, check Settings > Privacy & security > Recommendations & offers. Microsoft says this page is replacing the older General privacy settings page in newer versions, so the exact location may depend on your release. Review the available recommendations and offers controls and disable the ones you do not want.

To limit use of Windows’ advertising identifier, look for the advertising ID option under Recommendations & offers and turn it off. This applies to apps that use that identifier; it does not control cookies or separate advertising practices in third-party products. Microsoft explicitly notes: “Turning the advertising ID off will not reduce the number of ads you see, but it may mean that ads are less interesting and relevant to you.” See Microsoft’s privacy settings for Recommendations & offers.

How to review app permissions

Open Settings > Privacy & security, then select a capability such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, or Calendar. Review which apps have access and turn off access for apps that do not need it. The precise permission list varies by capability and installed apps.

These permission controls chiefly govern Microsoft Store apps. Traditional desktop apps may not appear in the lists and can access information differently, so an absent app entry is not proof that the program cannot access a capability. Microsoft’s app-permissions guidance explains this distinction.

How to remove unwanted preinstalled apps safely

For an app you recognize and no longer need, use Windows’ supported uninstall workflow rather than a bulk debloating script:

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.

  2. Find the app, select its More menu, then choose Uninstall if that option is available.

  3. Follow the confirmation prompts. If Windows does not offer an uninstall option, do not assume that deleting files or forcing removal is safe.

Some built-in apps and components are not removable through this workflow. Microsoft does not provide a universal safe-to-remove list in the cited guidance, so avoid removing components indiscriminately. Uninstall an app because you do not want or use it; the available evidence does not establish that removing bundled apps in general improves privacy or performance. See Microsoft’s instructions for uninstalling apps and programs.

What “block Microsoft tracking” means in practice

The settings in this guide reduce particular forms of collection, personalization, or app access. Required diagnostics remain distinct from optional diagnostics; ad and permission controls cover only their stated scopes; and uninstalling an app removes that app rather than changing Windows-wide data practices. Microsoft’s documentation for these controls does not establish a complete map of every connection or a supported single setting that blocks all Microsoft data flows. Use the relevant control for the specific data or access you want to limit, and treat claims of a guaranteed, system-wide tracking block with caution.
