To reduce wind noise, shield the microphone opening with a compatible furry windshield and place the mic where clothing or hair will not block it. To reduce handling noise, secure the mic and cable so they cannot rub, tug, or transmit movement, and avoid touching the mic while recording. A low-cut or high-pass filter can tame some remaining low-frequency rumble, but it cannot replace physical wind protection or reliably repair severe wind distortion.

First identify which noise you are hearing

Wind noise and handling noise can both make dialogue sound rough, but they reach the recording by different routes. Wind noise begins with moving air at the microphone capsule. Handling noise comes through physical contact or vibration—for example, a hand touching a mic, a cable brushing clothing, or a transmitter shifting against fabric.

That distinction matters because the fixes are different. A filter may reduce some low-frequency wind rumble, but it will not stop clothing from rubbing against a microphone. A shock mount can isolate vibration for a microphone format designed to use one, but it does not protect a body-worn mic from wind blowing across its opening.

Shure’s Michael Pettersen described the airflow problem this way: “A microphone responds to the movement of air, and it does not care what caused the air to move.” The explanation appeared in Shure’s May 25, 2012 technical tip on minimizing wind noise. Read Shure’s wind-noise guidance.

This is why a mic can pick up wind even when the weather does not feel especially windy. The capsule responds to air moving across it, whatever the cause. A speaker turning into a breeze, a gust around a building, or movement through the air can all create airflow at the opening. A furry windshield helps by placing a barrier between that moving air and the capsule; it does not make the microphone immune to every wind condition.

In practice, a recording may contain both kinds of noise at once. A gust can create a low thump while a loose cable makes a short scrape as the speaker turns. Listen for when the noise happens and what changes it: noise that rises with gusts or orientation suggests airflow, while noise that coincides with movement, touching, or fabric contact points to handling. If both are present, correct each cause separately.

Know which wireless microphone you are using

“Wireless mic” can mean more than one physical setup, and the right accessory depends on where the microphone opening is. Before changing placement or buying a windshield, identify the actual mic format:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Built-in transmitter microphone: The opening is on the body-worn transmitter itself. Placement and any windshield must suit that transmitter’s shape and opening.
  • Separate lavalier capsule: A small mic connects to a body-worn transmitter by cable. Protect and place the capsule, then secure the cable so it does not tug or rub.
  • Camera-mounted microphone: The mic is mounted on a camera while a wireless receiver handles the signal. Wind and vibration protection must suit that camera mic, not a separate body-worn transmitter.

For the RØDE Wireless Micro specifically, the manufacturer discusses keeping the microphone openings clear, mounting the transmitter inside clothing for additional wind protection, and using its additional furry windshields outdoors. Those instructions describe that product; they do not establish that every transmitter can be mounted or shielded the same way. See the RØDE Wireless Micro guide.

That format check also helps you avoid buying an accessory for the wrong part of the signal chain. A furry windshield for a separate capsule needs to fit that capsule’s opening; it is not necessarily suitable for the transmitter body. Likewise, a camera-mounted mic may have its own wind and vibration accessories even though the audio is sent wirelessly. Check the product guide for the microphone itself, not just the wireless receiver or transmitter.

Reduce wind noise before recording

Fit a compatible furry windshield

For outdoor recording, a furry windshield is often the first practical measure to try. It reduces the force of moving air reaching the microphone opening. Use one intended for your exact microphone or transmitter, and check its dimensions, attachment method, and opening location. A windshield that does not fit securely—or that covers the wrong part of the mic—may not protect the capsule as intended.

Seat the windshield over the opening and check that it stays in place as the speaker moves. Wind protection varies with the accessory’s design and fit, wind conditions, and microphone placement. Do not transfer a performance figure from one microphone and accessory combination to another.

Sennheiser documents a model-specific example for its MKE 2: the metal windshield is stated to reduce wind noise by up to 20 dB, and the additional fur windshield reduces it by a further 10 dB. Those are manufacturer figures for the MKE 2 arrangement, not a general expectation for wireless microphones. See Sennheiser’s MKE 2 windshield instructions.

The phrase to look for when shopping is furry lavalier microphone windshield, but treat it as a starting point rather than proof of fit. Compare the listing’s stated dimensions and attachment method with the exact mic model and opening location. A generic accessory may be relevant, but fit is model-specific. If the mic’s instructions name a compatible shield, follow those instructions; do not assume that an accessory that looks similar will seat correctly.

When you fit a windshield, make sure it stays on during the movements you expect to record. A loose or incorrectly positioned accessory can leave the opening exposed or shift during a take. After fitting, record a short test and listen rather than judging only by appearance. For the MKE 2, Sennheiser describes the metal windshield and additional fur windshield as a particular configuration; it is an example of layered protection, not a universal assembly order for other microphones.

Choose placement that protects the opening

Keep the microphone close enough to the speaker’s mouth for the intended recording, while leaving its openings clear. Clothing or hair over an opening can obstruct it; loose clothing can also create a separate rubbing or movement problem. If your system supports clothing placement or a magnetic mount, use the manufacturer’s directions and check that the transmitter remains stable and its openings are not covered.

Clothing can provide additional shelter on a supported setup, as RØDE describes for the Wireless Micro, but it is not automatically a cure. Fabric that presses against, flaps over, or rubs on the mic can create handling noise even when it blocks some wind. A sheltered placement still needs a movement and sound check.

Think of placement as balancing two checks: the microphone opening needs to remain unobstructed, and the mic or transmitter needs to stay still enough that fabric does not scrape or shift against it. If a placement reduces wind but creates rustle, it has traded one noise for another. Try a small change in position, make sure the clothing or mount holds the unit in place, and repeat the test. Use only placement methods the manufacturer supports for that particular transmitter or capsule.

Test the setup in the conditions you will record

Before a full take, record a short test with the speaker facing different directions and moving naturally. Listen for distinct problems rather than treating every low or scratchy sound as “wind”:

  • Wind thumps or low rumble: Recheck the opening, windshield fit, and placement. Improve physical protection before relying on filtering.
  • Fabric rustle: Find where clothing touches or moves against the mic, then adjust the placement or secure the fabric.
  • Intermittent bumps or scrapes: Check whether the transmitter, capsule, or cable shifts or contacts another surface.

Make one adjustment at a time and repeat the test. That makes it easier to tell whether the problem was airflow, clothing, cable movement, or more than one cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a useful test, include the movements the person will actually make: turning their head, walking, or moving their arms if those motions are part of the recording. Listen to the test through headphones if available, since short rustles and bumps may be easy to miss in a room or through a speaker. The goal is not to create a lab measurement; it is to catch an obvious problem before the full take and find which physical adjustment helps.

Use a low-cut filter only for the rumble it can address

A low-cut filter, also called a high-pass filter, reduces low frequencies. If wind protection and placement are already as good as the setup allows, filtering may lessen residual low-frequency rumble. Shure’s wind-noise guidance explains that wind noise can contain substantial low-frequency content, so cutting extreme bass can reduce some audible wind noise.

Filtering is a finishing measure, not a substitute for a windshield. It cannot prevent wind from striking the capsule, and severe wind distortion may remain objectionable after filtering. Filter controls and their available settings vary by recording system, so use the controls documented for your own equipment rather than assuming a particular menu path or setting.

Listen to the voice with the filter both off and on. Stronger filtering can affect voice tone as well as rumble; RØDE’s processing guide describes high-pass filtering as reducing low frequencies such as rumble and notes that stronger settings can affect the sound of the voice. Choose the least aggressive setting that improves the recording without making speech sound unnaturally thin. Read RØDE’s audio-processing controls guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical way to judge it is to compare the same spoken line with the filter off and on. If the rumble is less intrusive and speech still sounds natural, the filter may be helping. If the voice loses body or sounds thin, back off the setting if the system allows it. Do not raise the filtering strength just because a severe gust still sounds distorted: the remaining problem may be airflow overwhelming the physical protection rather than bass that can be cleanly removed.

Not every wireless mic system offers the same filter or controls. The cited manufacturer guidance explains what high-pass filtering does, but it does not prescribe a universal cutoff frequency or menu setting. Check your system’s own documentation and make the decision by listening to the voice, rather than copying a setting from a different model.

Prevent handling noise by controlling contact and movement

Secure the mic, clothing, and cable

Handling noise is often a small movement becoming audible because it reaches the microphone through contact or vibration. Check likely contact points: fingers on a handheld mic, a transmitter rubbing against clothing, a loose cable brushing fabric, or a mount transmitting vibration. Secure the mic and cable so they do not flap, rub, or tug on the capsule, and avoid touching the mic during a take.

With a separate lavalier capsule, the capsule needs to stay in its intended position and the cable needs enough support that movement elsewhere does not pull on it. With a built-in transmitter microphone, inspect the transmitter’s contact with clothing and make sure a clothing mount does not leave the unit free to shift. Do not solve movement by covering or pressing fabric against the microphone opening.

Use the test recording to locate the contact point. If a scrape happens when the speaker turns, watch whether the cable or fabric moves at the same moment. If a bump occurs when someone adjusts the transmitter, avoid adjusting it during the take and check whether it can be secured more firmly before recording. Shure’s guidance to avoid excessive handling is a useful general principle: the fewer unnecessary touches and movements that reach the mic, the fewer opportunities for handling noise.

A listener may ask whether a grip can reduce handling noise. A grip is relevant only if the microphone is a handheld format and the grip or mount is compatible with that mic; it does not solve fabric or cable contact on a body-worn lavalier or transmitter. For a supported handheld, boom, or camera mic, an isolation mount may help with transmitted vibration. For a body-worn system, start with stable placement and cable control instead of adding an unrelated grip.

Use isolation mounts only with supported microphone formats

A shock or isolation mount can reduce vibration reaching a compatible handheld, boom, or camera-mounted microphone. It is not a universal accessory for wireless transmitters: a mount built into a camera mic does not show that a separate body-worn transmitter needs one. Check the mic and mount instructions for compatibility before using an isolation accessory.

Sennheiser’s MKE 400 Mobile Kit is an example of a camera microphone with integrated wind and shock isolation and low-cut filtering. It is useful context for what those features can do on a supported camera-mic format, not a recommendation or proof that the same arrangement applies to a wireless lavalier. See Sennheiser’s MKE 400 Mobile Kit specifications.

Keep the categories distinct when deciding what to add. A windshield addresses air reaching a mic opening. A shock or isolation mount addresses vibration on a microphone format designed to use the mount. A stable clothing mount and a secured cable address movement on a body-worn setup. One accessory may have several functions on a particular product, but that does not make it interchangeable with the others.

Choose the fix that matches the problem

Option Best suited to Check before using it
Furry windshield Outdoor airflow around a lavalier or transmitter microphone Exact dimensions, microphone-opening location, and attachment compatibility; fit and performance are model-specific.
Clothing placement or magnetic mount Body-worn transmitter placement and, on supported systems, additional clothing coverage Keep openings clear and prevent fabric rubbing or transmitter movement. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Low-cut/high-pass filter Residual low-frequency rumble after physical protection and placement are addressed Whether the system provides the filter and whether it changes the voice tone; it does not replace wind protection.
Shock or isolation mount Vibration reaching a compatible handheld, boom, or camera microphone Microphone format and mount compatibility; it is not automatically suitable for a body-worn transmitter.

There is no single accessory that covers every cause in the table. If outdoor wind is the main issue, prioritize a compatible furry shield and appropriate placement. If the sound changes when clothing or cables move, stabilize those contact points. If residual rumble remains after the physical setup is sound, consider filtering. If vibration reaches a supported camera, boom, or handheld mic, check whether its format accepts an isolation mount.

Cost and availability depend on the exact accessory and system, and no universal price or merchant can be recommended here. Check the microphone manufacturer’s dimensions, compatibility notes, and attachment method before buying. A low-cost generic listing is not useful if it does not fit the opening or stay attached; a model-specific accessory is not automatically necessary if the problem is actually a loose cable or rubbing clothing.

A practical recording workflow

  1. Identify the microphone format. Determine whether the microphone is built into the transmitter, is a separate lavalier capsule, or is mounted on the camera. Find the actual microphone opening.
  2. Place it correctly. Keep a body-worn mic near the speaker’s mouth as the system’s instructions allow, with its openings clear of clothing and hair.
  3. Add compatible wind protection outdoors. Fit the manufacturer-compatible furry windshield over the opening and confirm that it stays seated. For an inside-clothing placement, use that arrangement only if the manufacturer supports it.
  4. Secure possible sources of handling noise. Stabilize clothing, transmitter, capsule, and cable so they cannot rub, flap, shift, or tug. Do not handle the microphone during the take.
  5. Record a short movement test. Have the speaker turn and move naturally. Listen separately for wind thumps, fabric rustle, and cable or contact noise.
  6. Correct the physical cause first. Improve windshield fit or placement for wind; stabilize the mic, clothing, or cable for handling noise. Change one thing at a time and test again.
  7. Try filtering only if rumble remains. Apply a low-cut/high-pass filter if available, then compare the voice with the filter off and on. Keep the least aggressive setting that helps without harming the voice tone.

It can help to keep a simple mental order during setup: opening, shield, position, movement, then filter. First confirm the mic opening is not covered. Next confirm the shield fits and stays seated. Then check where the mic sits and whether the speaker can move without fabric or cable rubbing it. Only after those physical checks should you use filtering for remaining low-frequency rumble.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a test reveals more than one problem, do not try to solve everything with one aggressive filter. A low thump during gusts and a scrape during a turn likely have different causes. Address the airflow with protection and placement, and the scrape with cable or clothing control. Repeat the movement test after each adjustment so you know whether the change helped.

What not to expect from post-processing

Filtering can reduce some low-frequency energy, but it does not stop airflow or remove the physical cause of fabric and cable noise. If wind has severely distorted the recording, or clothing has repeatedly scraped the capsule, a filter may not restore clean dialogue. The most dependable opportunity to improve those sounds is before the take: protect and position the mic, eliminate contact and movement, and check the result under realistic conditions.

Likewise, do not treat a manufacturer’s decibel figure as a promise for a different microphone, shield, or wind condition. Sennheiser’s stated “up to” reduction and additional fur-shield figure apply to its MKE 2 accessory setup. Other combinations have different dimensions, attachment systems, and performance. The useful lesson is to select protection designed for your particular mic and then test it in the conditions you will actually encounter.

The same caution applies to mounts and filters. An integrated shock mount on a camera mic does not mean a separate transmitter needs a shock mount, and a high-pass filter that works on one voice or setup may affect another voice differently. Use compatibility instructions and a short listening test to decide. Physical prevention is the first line of defense; filtering and isolation are tools for the problems they are designed to address.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to reduce wind noise on a wireless lavalier mic?

Fit a furry windshield made for the exact lavalier or transmitter, seat it over the microphone opening, and keep that opening clear of clothing and hair. Test the setup in the conditions and movements you expect. A low-cut filter may reduce remaining low-frequency rumble, but it does not replace wind protection.

Can I put my wireless transmitter inside clothing to block wind?

Only if the manufacturer supports that placement for your model. RØDE describes inside-clothing mounting as an option for the Wireless Micro, but clothing can also rub, flap, cover openings, or let the unit shift. Check the fit and record a movement test.

Will a high-pass filter remove wind noise?

It can reduce some low-frequency rumble, since wind noise can contain substantial low-frequency energy. It will not stop airflow or reliably repair severe wind distortion, and stronger filtering can make a voice sound thin. Compare the voice with the filter on and off.

Does a grip or shock mount reduce handling noise on a wireless mic?

A compatible isolation mount may reduce vibration on a supported handheld, boom, or camera microphone. It is not a universal fix for a body-worn transmitter or lavalier. For those, secure the mic, clothing, and cable and avoid touching the mic during a take.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much wind reduction should I expect from a furry windshield?

It depends on the microphone, shield design and fit, placement, and wind conditions. Sennheiser states that its MKE 2 metal windshield reduces wind noise by up to 20 dB and its additional fur windshield by a further 10 dB; those figures apply to that MKE 2 setup, not every wireless mic.

The Bottom Line

Match the fix to the noise: use a compatible furry windshield and clear placement for wind; secure the mic, clothing, and cable to prevent handling noise. Test movement before the take, and use a low-cut filter only for residual rumble—not as a substitute for physical protection.
