The safest way to reduce VR motion sickness is to stop as soon as symptoms begin, wait until you feel normal, then return with shorter sessions and less continuous virtual movement. Start with teleport locomotion and snap turning, reduce acceleration and camera movement, and adjust the headset’s interpupillary distance (IPD) until the image is clear and relaxed. Comfort varies, so treat every setting as an experiment rather than a guarantee.
Why VR can make you feel sick
VR motion sickness is usually linked to a conflict between visual and physical movement cues. Your eyes may see the virtual world accelerating, turning or sliding while your inner ear and muscles report that your body is still. Meta’s Horizon OS developer guidance describes this mismatch as a cause of motion sickness and also discusses vection: the convincing illusion that you are moving when you are stationary.
Continuous joystick movement, sudden acceleration, rapid direction changes and artificial camera motion can intensify that conflict. A game can feel comfortable while you stand still and uncomfortable as soon as it begins smooth locomotion. Susceptibility differs widely; a setting that works for one person may make another person ill within minutes.

Latency, an unstable frame rate or a blurry image can make the experience harder to tolerate, but the practical response remains the same: stop when discomfort starts, restore a clear view and reduce visual motion. Do not assume that a more powerful computer, a different headset or an accessory will solve the problem unless the manufacturer has verified a specific issue. The comfort controls in the app and your session habits are the first things to test.

Common symptoms
The CDC Yellow Book lists nausea and vomiting among the primary symptoms. Other possible signs include dizziness, sweating, headache, eyestrain, fatigue and a general sense of disorientation. Symptoms can build gradually, so do not wait for vomiting before taking a break. Warmth, sudden salivation, a flushed or clammy feeling, difficulty focusing and a sense that the room is still moving after you stop are also reasons to remove the headset and rest.
What to do the moment symptoms start
- Stop the virtual experience immediately. Pause the app, remove the headset and sit or stand somewhere stable.
- Do not push through it. Continuing in the hope that your body will “get used to it” can make the session worse and may condition you to associate a particular experience with discomfort.
- Wait until the discomfort has gone. Meta Quest safety guidance says to remove the headset and stop use if you feel discomfort, and not to use it again until the discomfort is gone. The guidance is product documentation, not a diagnosis or a universal medical rule.
- Record the trigger. Note the app, movement mode, turning mode, session length and whether the headset image was blurry. This makes the next adjustment deliberate instead of random.
If symptoms are severe, unusual, or continue after you have stopped using VR, obtain appropriate medical advice. The available VR safety material does not establish a specific time threshold for clinical evaluation, so do not treat any particular number of minutes or hours as an official cutoff. Do not drive, climb stairs or resume activities requiring reliable balance while you are dizzy.
A safe progression for new users or a new game
Build tolerance gradually rather than trying to complete a long session on the first attempt. Meta’s safety example is up to 30 minutes of use followed by a 15-minute break when beginning with a headset or new content, with use increased gradually as a person becomes accustomed to the experience. It explicitly recognizes that people need different durations; the example is not a universal limit.
- Begin with a stationary experience. Choose a scene, puzzle or viewing mode in which your head movement controls the view but your virtual body does not travel continuously.
- Use a short trial. End the trial before you feel unwell. If you notice early warmth, sweating, eye strain or uneasiness, stop rather than waiting for nausea.
- Take a real break. Remove the headset, look at ordinary surroundings and let all symptoms pass. A break is not the same as pausing while the headset remains on your face.
- Change one variable at a time. On the next trial, alter locomotion or turning, not every setting simultaneously. You need to know which change helped.
- Increase exposure slowly. Add time only after several comfortable trials. A longer session is not evidence that a particular setting is safe for everyone.
Use the same level, route and posture for comparison when possible. If you change the app, movement mode, headset fit and session length all at once, you cannot tell which factor caused improvement or relapse. Keep a simple note such as “teleport, snap turn, 10 minutes, clear image, no symptoms.” That record is more useful than trying to remember how you felt several days later.
Choose movement controls that limit visual motion
Open the game’s Comfort, Movement, Locomotion or Accessibility menu. Names differ by app, but the relevant choices usually fall into three groups.
| Movement option | Continuous visual motion | Control and freedom | Orientation trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teleport movement | Low: you select a destination and move there without seeing the whole path slide past. | Good for discrete repositioning; less natural for walking through a space. | The abrupt scene change can disorient some people, especially when destinations are far away or rotated. |
| Snap turning | Low: the view rotates in set increments instead of sweeping continuously. | Fast to learn and predictable, but less smooth than physical or analog turning. | The instant angle change may feel startling; use smaller increments if the app offers them. |
| Smooth or slide locomotion | High: the scene moves continuously while you remain physically still. | Most freedom and usually the most natural virtual walking control. | More likely to provoke symptoms in susceptible users, particularly with acceleration or fast turns. |
Meta’s locomotion guidance identifies teleportation as a way to reduce motion sickness by removing continuous movement, while warning that sudden scene changes can disorient some users. Therefore, teleport is a sensible first setting, not a guaranteed solution. If it feels disorienting, try shorter teleport distances, slower fades, or a stationary mode.

Some apps let you combine modes: teleport for long distances, physical walking for small movements, and snap turning for orientation. That hybrid approach can preserve control without asking your eyes to watch a continuous glide. If an app offers a vignette or narrowed field of view during movement, test it as another optional reduction in visual motion, but keep it only if it genuinely feels better; no single comfort option works for everyone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Reduce acceleration and camera effects
- Turn off automatic camera sway, head-bob, screen shake and cinematic camera movement when the app provides switches for them.
- Use the slowest movement speed or acceleration setting that remains playable.
- Avoid rapid 180-degree turns and sudden changes in direction while testing your tolerance.
- If smooth movement causes symptoms, return to teleportation or another less continuous option instead of trying to “power through” the same mode.
- Disable forced camera rides, scripted vehicle sections or automatic rotations when the app allows you to skip them.
- Keep your real head movements natural. Deliberately swinging your head to counter a virtual turn can add strain rather than correcting the mismatch.
When a game has separate speed, acceleration and turning controls, change acceleration first, then speed, then turning increments. A high top speed may be tolerable if acceleration is gentle, while a moderate speed can still feel unpleasant when it starts and stops abruptly. Test each change for only a short period.
Set the headset fit and IPD correctly
IPD, or interpupillary distance, is the spacing between the centers of your pupils. A headset’s lenses need to align with your eyes so that each eye receives a clear image. Meta’s comfort guidance says matching IPD can make content feel more natural, reduce visual strain and help you maintain focus.
- Put the headset on and tighten the strap enough that it does not slide, without creating painful pressure.
- Use the headset’s physical lens slider, software control or on-screen calibration method, depending on the model.
- Adjust until text and fine edges look equally clear across the view and your eyes are not constantly refocusing.
- Recheck the fit after moving the headset, changing the strap or sharing it with another person.
Do not copy a single IPD number from an online guide. IPD is personal, and adjustment ranges differ between headsets. If the image is clear only when the headset is held at an awkward angle, correct the fit rather than forcing your eyes to compensate. A crooked headset, an over-tightened strap or lenses positioned too high or low can create eyestrain even when the movement settings are gentle.
Clean lenses according to the headset maker’s instructions and check that glasses, if worn, are not pressing the headset out of alignment. Do not make a lens adjustment while moving around; sit or stand safely, then recalibrate. If another person uses the headset, reset the fit and IPD for that person before starting.

When an experience makes you uncomfortable, use this sequence instead of changing settings at random:

- Confirm clarity. Re-seat the headset and adjust IPD before testing locomotion again.
- Select teleport and snap turn. Play briefly with continuous movement disabled.
- Remove extra motion. Disable camera shake, sway, head-bob and automatic turns where available.
- Test one short route. Use the same room or level so you can compare the result.
- Stop at the first warning sign. Record what happened and end the session.
If the same title repeatedly triggers symptoms even with comfort options enabled, choose a lower-motion experience for now. Repeated discomfort is useful information about the match between that content and your current tolerance, not a challenge you must overcome.
Match the experience to your current tolerance
Usually easier starting points
- Stationary viewing, seated environments and experiences with a stable horizon.
- Teleport movement with snap turning.
- Slow, deliberate interactions in which your hands and head move naturally while the virtual world remains stable.
- Short sessions in familiar scenes where you can pause immediately.
Commonly difficult situations
- Vehicles, flying and roller-coaster-style scenes that create strong forward motion.
- Free movement with acceleration, braking or fast strafing.
- Automatic camera rides, scripted transitions and smooth virtual rotation.
- Large visual fields moving quickly while your real body remains stationary.
- Experiences that repeatedly move or rotate you without giving you control over the timing.
These categories describe motion patterns, not a universal ranking of apps. A person may tolerate a fast game with teleport movement and feel ill in a slow experience with an automatic camera. Check each app’s comfort menu and treat its defaults as a starting point. Read the app’s comfort rating or movement description when available, but verify the actual settings in the headset because labels and defaults differ.
Seated versus standing use
Use the posture that lets you stop safely and keep your physical balance. Standing can make a mismatch feel more obvious because your body expects movement, while seated play may reduce fall risk when you are dizzy. Neither posture eliminates the visual conflict. Clear the area around you, keep the headset’s boundary system active and stop before balance becomes uncertain.
Do not use a chair with wheels or play near stairs, sharp furniture or other hazards. If you choose seated play, make sure the app’s height and floor calibration are correct; an incorrect virtual floor can make ordinary head and hand movements feel unnatural. If you choose standing play, keep both feet planted during initial tests and avoid turning your whole body quickly while symptoms are being assessed.
Common mistakes that make symptoms worse
- Waiting for severe nausea. Early sweating, eye strain or dizziness is already a stop signal.
- Taking a break without removing the headset. Your eyes and balance system are still receiving the same cues.
- Changing every setting at once. You lose the ability to identify the helpful change.
- Assuming teleport cannot cause discomfort. Sudden scene changes can disorient some users.
- Forcing a copied IPD value. A number that suits another person or headset may make your image less clear.
- Returning before symptoms have passed. The next trial should begin only when you feel normal again.
- Using an accessory as a substitute for settings. No general purchase has been established as a reliable preventive measure.
What does not have strong support as a general fix
The source-backed measures for this problem are stopping, taking breaks, changing locomotion and turning, reducing artificial motion and adjusting IPD. The available evidence does not establish that a particular headset accessory, cooling device, wristband, medication or other purchase reliably prevents VR motion sickness. Avoid treating a product claim as a substitute for comfort settings and a gradual schedule. There is no supported cost, device model or accessory specification that can be presented as a universal solution.
A 2021 arXiv preprint involving 360-degree VR reported that an AI-supplemented six-degrees-of-freedom motion technique reduced nausea scores in that experiment. It did not reduce oculomotor or disorientation measures, and the authors reported no change in fast motion-sickness ratings or heart-rate measures. That narrow result is not evidence that a consumer setting or product will reliably prevent sickness.

If one experience repeatedly causes symptoms while other VR content is comfortable, leave that experience for later and select content with less continuous motion. If many different experiences cause symptoms despite a clear image, careful fit and short sessions, seek advice from an appropriate health professional rather than assuming the issue is merely a settings problem. Current VR safety guidance does not provide a VR-specific clinical threshold, diagnosis or treatment plan.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Official developer and safety guidance supports the basic sequence: minimize visual-physical mismatch, use comfort options, take breaks and stop when discomfort begins. It does not provide a population-wide risk percentage, a guaranteed cure or one ideal locomotion mode for every user. The example of 30 minutes followed by 15 minutes is a starting schedule from Meta Quest safety material, not a medical threshold.
Meta’s Horizon OS developer comfort guidance was updated December 17, 2025, and its overview states that excessive use without breaks is not recommended. Product safety documents can change, so follow the current instructions supplied with your headset as well as the app’s own comfort warnings. These documents help with risk reduction; they do not diagnose why a particular person feels ill.
Comfort is therefore an individual calibration task. Keep the image clear, reduce continuous visual movement, test briefly and treat symptoms as the signal to stop. Those steps address the factors that settings can change without promising that every person can become comfortable in every VR experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does VR motion sickness go away eventually?
Some people become more comfortable as they build exposure gradually, but no setting or schedule guarantees that outcome. Stop when symptoms begin, wait until they have passed and return with shorter trials and less continuous movement. Do not keep playing through nausea in an attempt to force adaptation.

Is teleport movement always better than smooth movement?
No. Teleport removes the continuous visual motion that often triggers symptoms, but its abrupt scene changes can disorient some users. Try teleport first, then adjust destination distance or fades if the transitions feel uncomfortable. Smooth movement offers more freedom but is more likely to cause symptoms for susceptible users.
Why do I still feel dizzy after taking the headset off?
Symptoms can take time to settle after you stop. Rest and do not resume VR until the discomfort is gone. If symptoms are severe, unusual or persist, seek appropriate medical advice; VR safety guidance does not establish a universal time limit for evaluation.
What IPD should I use?
Use the setting that aligns the lenses with your own pupils and produces a clear, relaxed image. IPD is personal, and adjustment ranges differ by headset, so do not copy one millimeter value from another person or an online guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I use a fan, wristband, medication or a special headset strap?
Those purchases are not established as reliable general fixes by the cited guidance. First stop when symptoms start, take breaks, reduce artificial motion, choose teleport or snap turning and correct the headset fit. Ask a qualified clinician before using medication for any purpose.
Can seated VR prevent motion sickness?
Seated play can reduce fall risk when you are dizzy, but it does not remove the mismatch between visual and physical movement. Use the posture that lets you stop safely, and calibrate the app’s floor and height correctly.
How long should my first VR session be?
Meta Quest safety material gives up to 30 minutes followed by a 15-minute break as an example for beginning with a headset or new content, while noting that people need different durations. Treat it as a starting example, not a universal limit, and stop earlier if symptoms appear.
What if only one game makes me sick?
That game may contain more continuous movement, acceleration, forced camera motion or abrupt turns than the experiences you tolerate. Enable its comfort options, test a short route with teleport and snap turning, and leave the title for later if it repeatedly causes symptoms.
The Bottom Line
Stop at the first symptom, remove the headset and wait until you feel normal. Resume with short trials, real breaks, a clear and correctly fitted headset, teleport movement, snap turning and minimal camera motion. Change one setting at a time, and leave any experience that repeatedly makes you ill; no accessory, IPD number or locomotion mode is guaranteed to work for everyone.
