The most reliable ways to reduce tyre wear and the particles it creates are to accelerate and brake progressively, leave enough space to avoid harsh stops, take corners without unnecessary scrubbing, and keep every tyre at the vehicle manufacturer’s specified cold pressure. Do not inflate tyres above that specification to chase lower emissions: both underinflation and overinflation can create uneven wear, and evidence linking pressure changes to particle emissions is still limited.
Tyre particles are only one part of non-exhaust road pollution, alongside brake wear and road-surface abrasion. Your driving style, tyre pressure, vehicle load, alignment, suspension, tyre design, road surface and weather all influence how much rubber is lost. The practical steps below reduce avoidable wear without trading away braking, grip or vehicle compatibility.
What tyre particle pollution is
Friction turns tread into airborne and road-deposited particles
Tyre abrasion is generated where rubber meets the road. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) describes turning, acceleration and braking as typical situations that create abrasion. During these manoeuvres, the contact patch must transmit forces between the vehicle and the road. The more abruptly those forces are applied, or the more the tyre slips across the surface, the more tread material can be removed.

Some of the lost material remains on the road and can later be moved by traffic or stormwater. Finer material can become suspended in the air. The exact quantity depends on tyre construction, vehicle mass and power, pressure, load, alignment, suspension condition, road texture, temperature, wetness and the driver’s inputs. There is no single “normal” emission rate that applies to every car.

Tyre wear is not the same as all non-exhaust emissions
Inventories often group tyre wear with brake wear and particles generated by road surfaces under the heading “non-exhaust emissions.” The European Environment Agency reports that non-exhaust sources represented 77% of EU-27 road-transport PM10 emissions and 60% of PM2.5 emissions in 2023. Those percentages do not isolate tyres; they include the other non-exhaust categories as well.
A 2023 European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) review estimated mean passenger-car tyre abrasion at 110 milligrams per kilometre per vehicle, or 68 milligrams per kilometre per tonne of vehicle mass, based on approximately 300 measurements. The review stresses that results vary substantially with the tyre, vehicle, road, environmental conditions and driving style. It also reported literature ranges suggesting tyre abrasion contributes roughly one-third to one-half of unintentionally released environmental microplastics and 5% to 30% of road-transport particulate-matter emissions. Those ranges use different definitions and boundaries from the EEA inventory, so they should not be combined into a single percentage.
Driving techniques that limit unnecessary wear
Accelerate progressively
Apply the accelerator smoothly instead of demanding a sudden burst of torque. Progressive acceleration gives the tyre time to build grip without large slips at the contact patch. It is especially useful when pulling away on wet, dusty, loose or cold surfaces, where available grip is lower.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA real-world driving study identified braking and acceleration events as the leading influences among the behaviours it examined, followed by cornering and speed. The study does not establish a universal percentage saving for any one technique. Treat smooth acceleration as a way to remove avoidable stress, not as a guaranteed emissions reduction of a specific size.
- Feed in power gradually after a junction, roundabout or traffic-light stop.
- Use a lower demand for torque when the road is slippery rather than trying to overcome wheelspin with more throttle.
- Allow the vehicle’s traction-control system to intervene less often by avoiding abrupt throttle changes.
Plan ahead so braking is gentle
Look several vehicles ahead and lift off the accelerator early when traffic is slowing. Maintaining a larger following gap lets you reduce speed with a gradual pedal application instead of repeated hard stops. Smooth braking reduces the high longitudinal forces that accelerate tread loss and also avoids unnecessary heat and energy use.

- Scan beyond the vehicle immediately in front for red lights, queues, crossings, bends and merging traffic.
- Release the accelerator early when a slowdown is predictable.
- Apply the brake progressively, increasing pressure only as needed.
- Reserve firm braking for genuine hazards; do not imitate emergency braking during ordinary traffic.
Leaving more space is not a licence to obstruct traffic. Keep a safe, legal speed and adapt the gap to weather, visibility, road condition and the vehicle behind you.
Take corners without scrubbing the tyres
Sharp steering at high speed makes the front and rear tyres follow different paths while transmitting large lateral forces. That combination can scrub tread across the road. Reduce speed before the bend, steer smoothly and avoid abrupt mid-corner corrections. The aim is not to crawl through every turn; it is to avoid needless sliding or repeated steering corrections.
- Choose a speed that allows the corner to be taken with one smooth steering input.
- Brake before the turn rather than carrying heavy braking deep into it whenever traffic and safety permit.
- Avoid rapid lane changes and high-speed manoeuvres that make the tyres slide across the surface.
This recommendation is a practical inference from the friction mechanism and observed driving-behaviour findings, not a quantified guarantee for every vehicle or route.
Keep speed appropriate to conditions
Higher speed can increase the energy involved in braking and cornering and can magnify the consequences of abrupt inputs. Drive at a legal speed that suits visibility, weather, traffic and the road surface. Avoid treating a higher cruising speed as a way to save tyres; any possible steady-speed benefit can be outweighed by harder acceleration, braking or cornering.
Manage load and towing within the vehicle rating
Vehicle load is one of the factors associated with wear. Carrying more mass increases the forces the tyres must transmit, especially during braking and turns. Follow the vehicle’s stated axle, tyre-load and towing limits. Do not remove safety equipment or reduce a required load rating in an attempt to reduce abrasion.

Set tyre pressure to the vehicle specification
Why the specified value matters
Use the pressure listed in the owner’s handbook, on the vehicle placard or in another manufacturer instruction. The specification is normally given for cold tyres and may list different values for normal and heavily loaded conditions. It is a vehicle-and-tyre fitment requirement, not a generic number printed on a pressure gauge or chosen from a higher value in the hope of reducing pollution.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Too little pressure can make the shoulders or edges wear faster. Too much pressure can concentrate wear in the centre of the tread and can alter handling and ride. Either condition can shorten tyre life and compromise grip. Pressure is only one part of the wear equation, and the available emissions evidence is not strong enough to justify deliberately deviating from the manufacturer’s setting.
How to check and correct pressure
- Find the correct cold-pressure values in the handbook or the placard, including any load-specific setting.
- Check the tyres when they are cold, before a long drive or after the vehicle has been parked long enough to cool.
- Measure each tyre with a suitable gauge, including the spare if the vehicle has one and its pressure is specified.
- Compare each reading with the vehicle’s value, not with the maximum pressure moulded into the tyre sidewall.
- Add or release air to reach the specified setting, then refit valve caps and check for a leaking valve or puncture if pressure falls again.
- Recheck after a significant load change or when a warning system reports a pressure problem.
Buying a gauge is not itself an emissions measure. The benefit comes from checking accurately and adjusting to the correct specification. A tyre shop or qualified technician can check pressure if you cannot do it safely.
What pressure research does and does not show
In a limited UK Department for Transport Phase 2 test, one tyre type on a smooth roller produced higher particle-number and particle-mass emissions when pressure was reduced from 2.9 to 2.0 bar. The report calls for testing with more tyre types and an abrasive road surface. That result cannot be converted into a universal pressure-response curve, and it does not support overinflating tyres beyond the vehicle maker’s recommendation.
Inspect wear before it becomes a pollution or safety problem
Look for patterns, not just remaining tread
When checking tyres, compare the inner edge, centre and outer edge of each tread. A difference between these areas, or a difference between left and right tyres on the same axle, can indicate a pressure, alignment, suspension or other vehicle issue. Feathered or rapidly worsening wear also warrants professional attention. Pressure and alignment affect wear, but a visual inspection alone cannot diagnose the underlying fault.

- Check for a tyre that is losing pressure repeatedly.
- Note uneven shoulder, centre or one-sided wear.
- Pay attention to new vibration, pulling, steering changes or unusual noise.
- Have a qualified service professional inspect alignment, suspension, wheels and tyres when a pattern or handling change appears.
Do not continue driving on a damaged tyre or attempt a home alignment adjustment without the required equipment and specifications. Correcting the cause prevents the same tread area from wearing again; replacing only the visibly worn tyre may not solve the problem.
Choosing replacement tyres without assuming a “green” label is enough
Compare abrasion data only on a like-for-like basis
Terms such as “EV,” “eco” or “low rolling resistance” describe particular design goals, but none proves lower tyre abrasion by itself. Tread compounds and casings are engineered for several competing requirements, including wet grip, dry handling, noise, rolling resistance, durability, winter performance and load capacity.
If abrasion results are published, compare them only when the tyre size, vehicle fitment, load, test method and reporting unit are comparable. A result from one laboratory method or size cannot automatically rank a different tyre used on a different vehicle. UNECE’s harmonized programme exists because robust comparisons need a consistent method.
| Replacement decision | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Abrasion claim | Documented result, test method, tyre size and load basis | Prevents unlike measurements being treated as a ranking |
| Safety performance | Wet and dry grip, braking suitability and weather rating | Lower presumed wear is not worthwhile if control or stopping performance is compromised |
| Vehicle compatibility | Correct size, load index, speed rating and approved fitment | Maintains handling, clearance and structural safety |
| Operating conditions | Climate, seasonal conditions, road types and expected load | A tyre suited to the wrong conditions can wear faster and perform poorly |
No particular tyre model is established here as a universally low-abrasion recommendation. Choose a correctly specified tyre and treat any abrasion figure as meaningful only within a comparable test framework.

| Figure | What it measures | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 77% of PM10 and 60% of PM2.5 | Share of EU-27 road-transport emissions from non-exhaust sources | EEA inventory for 2023; includes brake wear, tyre wear and road abrasion, not tyres alone |
| 110 mg/km per vehicle | Mean passenger-car tyre abrasion | JRC 2023 review estimate based on approximately 300 measurements; not a prediction for every car or tyre |
| 68 mg/km per tonne | Mean abrasion normalized by vehicle mass | Same JRC review; variation with tyre, vehicle, road, environment and driving style remains substantial |
| One-third to one-half | Estimated share of unintentionally released environmental microplastics attributed to tyre abrasion in reviewed literature | JRC literature range with a different scope from the EEA inventory |
| 5% to 30% | Estimated contribution of tyre abrasion to road-transport particulate-matter emissions | JRC literature range; definitions and boundaries differ among studies |
These figures are useful for understanding scale, but none tells you exactly how many particles your own vehicle emits on a particular trip. Your inputs, tyre condition and route remain decisive variables.

What is changing in tyre-abrasion regulation
UNECE’s harmonized test approach
On 8 February 2024, UNECE announced adoption of a harmonized tyre-abrasion measurement approach. It combines road convoy testing over 8,000 kilometres with laboratory drum testing over 5,000 kilometres. Results are expressed as tyre weight loss in milligrams per kilometre per tonne of load. A common method is intended to make future tyre comparisons more reliable than isolated tests using different surfaces, loads or reporting conventions.
Proposed limits for passenger-car tyres
In March 2026, UNECE announced proposed abrasion limits for new C1 passenger-car tyres. The announcement described tyres sold from 30 June 2028 as the intended application date, submission to the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP.29) in June 2026, and entry into force in January 2027 for Contracting Parties if adopted. These are proposed or conditional milestones, not a guarantee that every market will apply them on those dates. Work on C2 and C3 heavier-vehicle tyres was expected to continue during 2026 and 2027.
Check the formal regulatory status for the market and date that concern you before relying on a milestone. Until standardized abrasion limits are in force, consumers should not infer a legal abrasion ranking from marketing language alone.
A practical low-wear driving routine
- Before setting off, confirm that the tyres are correctly inflated for the vehicle and load.
- Scan ahead and leave enough space to slow without repeated hard braking.
- Accelerate progressively, particularly on low-grip surfaces.
- Reduce speed before bends and steer through them smoothly.
- Avoid unnecessary lane-change swerves, wheelspin and high-speed manoeuvres.
- At routine checks, compare tread wear across each tyre and watch for pressure loss, vibration or pulling.
- Arrange qualified inspection when wear is uneven or handling changes.
- When replacing tyres, verify the complete fitment and compare any abrasion data only on a standardized, like-for-like basis.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Overinflating to “save” rubber: excessive pressure can wear the tread centre and change handling. Use the manufacturer’s setting.
- Assuming all particle figures are tyre figures: check whether a statistic includes brakes and road abrasion.
- Buying a label instead of checking evidence: “eco,” “EV” or “low rolling resistance” does not establish abrasion performance.
- Waiting for visible damage: uneven wear can signal an alignment, suspension or pressure problem before the tyre looks obviously worn.
- Expecting one test to predict every vehicle: abrasion measurements depend on tyre size, load, surface, method and driving conditions.
Bottom line
Drive with anticipation: build speed gradually, brake early and smoothly, and take corners without scrubbing the tyres. Check cold pressure against the vehicle maker’s specification rather than adding or removing air to chase an unproven emissions benefit. Treat uneven wear or handling changes as reasons for qualified inspection, and evaluate replacement tyres using comparable abrasion measurements while protecting grip, weather suitability, load capacity and vehicle compatibility. These steps reduce avoidable wear without pretending that tyre particles are the whole of road-transport pollution.
