You can often reduce traffic noise without removing your existing windows, but the effective fix depends on the path the sound takes. Start by finding whether noise leaks through a window seal, frame-to-wall joint, vent, door, or another part of the façade. Repair only confirmed gaps, keep required ventilation operating, and consider professionally designed secondary glazing if the existing frame is sound but the closed window still transmits road noise.

Start with the sound path, not a product

Traffic noise reaches a room through the weakest part of the outside envelope. The glass may be the problem, but so may a worn perimeter gasket, an opening around the frame, a trickle vent, a door, a service penetration, or a different section of wall. Treating the wrong element can make an expensive change with little audible benefit.

YourHome’s noise-control guidance distinguishes between stopping sound from entering and reducing reflections after it is inside. Acoustic panels, rugs, bookcases, and other absorptive materials can make a room less reverberant, but they generally do not prevent road noise entering through a façade opening. Use them for room comfort only after you have dealt with the transmission path.

Map when and where the noise is strongest

  • Stand at each window, external door, vent and service opening while traffic passes. Note whether the sound is noticeably louder at one location.
  • Compare the room with the window fully shut, partially open and open. A large change when the sash is closed points toward an opening, seal or ventilation path; little change suggests that sound may be travelling through the glazing, frame or another façade element.
  • Listen at the frame perimeter and at the wall junction. A localised hiss or change in level near one edge is more consistent with an air leak than with sound passing uniformly through the pane.
  • Check rooms on the same façade and rooms on quieter sides of the home. This helps separate a window problem from noise entering through a door, roof, wall or shared building element.

These checks are a way to prioritise an inspection, not a substitute for an acoustic survey. If the source is unclear or the disturbance is severe, ask an acoustic professional for a site-specific assessment.

Inspect the existing window before sealing anything

A closed window should make a continuous, reasonably tight contact around its perimeter. The South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport explains that acoustic perimeter seals can reduce noise by making a closed window tight. That advice applies when the seal is the actual weak point; it cannot compensate for sound travelling through the pane or entering elsewhere.

Look for a failed or incompatible seal

  • Inspect the gasket, brush seal or compression seal for splits, flattening, gaps at corners, detachment and areas that no longer contact the sash.
  • Check that the sash closes squarely and that latches or handles pull it firmly into the frame. A misaligned sash can leave a continuous leak even when the seal itself appears intact.
  • Identify the window type and the existing seal profile before ordering a replacement. Sliding, hinged, tilt-and-turn and older timber windows use different profiles and closing actions.
  • Confirm that any replacement remains durable and allows the window to operate, lock and drain as designed.

Do not cover drainage slots, weep holes, pressure-equalisation paths or intentional ventilation openings with sealant or tape. Those openings are part of the window’s water-management or air-supply design.

Check the frame-to-wall junction

Noise can enter around the installed frame rather than through the window unit. Inspect the interior and exterior junction for cracked or missing sealant, movement, loose trim or a visible air path. Concealed gaps and substantial defects should be assessed by a qualified building professional, because the correct repair depends on the wall construction, moisture control and drainage details.

Use a building sealant compatible with the frame and surrounding materials when a confirmed joint is the problem. A generic strip applied over an unclean or moving joint may fail quickly, trap moisture or interfere with drainage. The objective is an airtight, weather-appropriate connection, not simply adding material wherever a line is visible.

Repair confirmed gaps in a controlled sequence

  1. Document the location. Photograph the gap, record whether the window is open or closed during the noise, and note any effect when the sash is pressed or latched.
  2. Identify the component. Determine whether the defect is a perimeter seal, frame joint, vent, door seal or another penetration. Do not assume every leak belongs to the window.
  3. Choose a compatible repair. Match the replacement seal or sealant to the window material, profile, movement and exposure. Follow the manufacturer’s preparation and curing instructions.
  4. Preserve designed openings. Keep drainage paths and required background ventilation clear. If an opening is intended to ventilate the room, sealing it is not an acoustic solution.
  5. Retest after curing or adjustment. Close and latch the window, listen during comparable traffic and check that operation, locking and water shedding still work.

If the noise level barely changes after a confirmed gap is repaired, stop adding sealant. The remaining transmission path is probably elsewhere or through the glazing itself.

Secondary glazing: the main retrofit when the frame can stay

Secondary glazing adds a separate glazed panel in its own frame on the room side of the existing window. The original window remains in place. The inner panel can generally be opened for cleaning or controlled ventilation, subject to the system design.

Why the cavity and complete assembly matter

The air space between the original window and the secondary panel, the pane type, frame airtightness and installation quality all affect the result. Australian government-supported glazing guidance notes that thicker or laminated glass and a larger air gap can help with lower-frequency noise such as traffic. It does not establish one universal arrangement or a guaranteed decibel reduction for every home.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask for performance information for the complete installed assembly rather than for a glass sample alone. A sample pane does not represent leakage at the frame, the cavity, the existing window, the wall junction or any ventilation opening. Request details of the tested or modelled system, the pane construction, the cavity dimension, seals, opening method and installation assumptions.

Questions to put in a secondary-glazing quotation

  • What existing window condition and frame type is the system designed to suit?
  • What pane construction is proposed, and why is it appropriate for traffic’s lower-frequency content?
  • What cavity or spacing is provided, and how is it maintained around the entire opening?
  • How is airtightness achieved at corners, handles, meeting rails and the perimeter?
  • Can the inner panel be opened for cleaning or ventilation, and how is it secured when closed?
  • How will condensation risk be assessed in the cavity and on the room-side surfaces?
  • What installation tolerances, wall conditions and access requirements could affect the result?
  • Is the stated acoustic performance for the complete window arrangement, or only for a laboratory component?

Secondary glazing is most attractive when the existing frame is serviceable, replacement would be disruptive, or the building’s appearance must be retained. It still requires careful detailing around reveals, handles, blinds and emergency egress where relevant.

Ventilation must remain part of the solution

Closing a noisy façade can reduce incoming sound, but removing necessary ventilation can create a different health and building problem. UK government guidance explains that ventilation dilutes pollutants generated indoors and that poorly ventilated homes face a high risk of mould. Moisture from bathing, cooking, drying clothes and occupants can condense on cold surfaces when air change is inadequate.

Do not seal a required vent casually

Background ventilators, air inlets, extract-air routes and other openings may be required by the dwelling’s design or local rules. Blocking one can reduce intended airflow, disrupt extract performance or increase condensation. Before altering a vent, establish what it serves and whether the room has a compliant alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use noise-attenuating ventilation where appropriate

UK Approved Document F guidance recommends noise-attenuating background ventilators for noisy façades when windows need to remain closed. A qualified ventilation professional can assess airflow, acoustic attenuation, indoor-air quality and local code requirements together. The exact approach is jurisdiction-specific; a solution suitable for one country or dwelling type may not meet another’s rules.

Depending on the home’s layout and ventilation design, supplying air from a quieter side may be possible. That is a design decision, not a reason to close a façade vent without checking the complete airflow path. Ask the professional to explain how replacement air enters, where stale air is extracted and how the system behaves with doors closed.

What curtains and blinds can—and cannot—do

Close-fitting lined curtains or blinds with pelmets can improve thermal comfort, light control and privacy. Australian government energy guidance recommends them for reducing unwanted heat transfer. They may make a room feel calmer by reducing light and visual exposure, but the available guidance does not substantiate a strong, stand-alone traffic-noise reduction claim.

Use window coverings as a complementary measure after addressing leaks and glazing. Fit them close to the opening, avoid gaps that defeat their thermal purpose, and make sure they do not obstruct required vents, drainage or the operation of a secondary-glazing panel. Treat any audible improvement as a comfort benefit rather than a guaranteed acoustic rating.

Compare retrofit options by the diagnosed problem

Option Best fit What to verify Important limitation
Compatible perimeter-seal repair A shut window has a visible or detectable leak around its edge. Correct seal profile, compression, durability, operation and clear drainage or ventilation paths. Does not stop sound through the glass or through an unrelated façade path.
Frame-to-wall joint repair Inspection identifies an air path around the installed frame. Sealant compatibility, substrate movement, weather exposure and preservation of drainage. Concealed or substantial defects may require a building professional.
Secondary glazing The existing window can remain and a more substantial retrofit is required. Complete-system performance, pane type, cavity, airtightness, condensation, access and ventilation. Results depend on the installed assembly; a glass-only rating is not enough.
Lined curtains, blinds and pelmets You also need privacy, light control or thermal comfort. Close fit, safe operation and clearance from vents or secondary glazing. Available guidance does not support promising a major road-noise reduction.
Noise-attenuating ventilation Windows must stay closed while rooms still need background air. Airflow, attenuation, indoor-air quality and local compliance. Design is jurisdiction- and dwelling-specific.
Door or other façade sealing The inspection identifies a door, vent, penetration, roof or wall as the weak path. Repair the actual element without disabling required airflow or drainage. Window products will not fix noise entering elsewhere.

Compare proposals on the diagnosed path, expected performance of the complete installed system, ventilation needs, reversibility, compatibility with the existing frame and building constraints. The available official guidance does not provide a universal price comparison or guaranteed reduction for a particular home, so a site-specific proposal is more meaningful than a generic product claim.

How to request a useful assessment or quote

  1. Describe the exposure. Give the assessor the road direction, traffic pattern, affected rooms and times when the noise is most disruptive.
  2. Share your observations. Identify locations where the sound is louder, whether closing the sash changes it, and any visible seal or junction defects.
  3. State non-negotiables. Explain whether the original frame must remain, whether appearance matters, whether the window is an escape route and which vents must remain active.
  4. Request assembly-level evidence. For secondary glazing, ask for the complete arrangement’s acoustic information and the assumptions behind it, not a pane-only figure.
  5. Ask about moisture and air. Require an explanation of condensation risk, background ventilation, extract operation and how the retrofit interacts with existing openings.
  6. Separate repair from enhancement. The quote should identify the cost and purpose of correcting a leak versus adding secondary glazing or a ventilation system.
  7. Confirm maintenance and access. Check how seals, hinges, latches, vents and inner panels will be cleaned, adjusted and replaced.

Common mistakes that waste money

Sealing every opening with tape or foam

Unselective sealing can block drainage or required ventilation while leaving the real transmission path untouched. Repair a confirmed defect with a compatible material and leave designed openings functional.

Buying curtains as the primary acoustic fix

Curtains can improve thermal and visual comfort, but they are not established here as a reliable stand-alone treatment for traffic noise. Do not use their presence to justify ignoring a failed seal or open vent.

Choosing a product from a glass specification alone

Pane thickness or lamination is only one part of the assembly. Frame leakage, cavity design, the original window and the wall junction can dominate the outcome. Evaluate the complete installed arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expecting room absorption to block outside sound

Absorptive finishes reduce reflections inside the room. They do not close an air path through a window, door or vent.

Ignoring low-frequency traffic components

Road noise includes lower-frequency content that can be harder to control. Guidance indicates that thicker or laminated glass and a larger air gap may help, but the appropriate combination depends on the existing window and the whole façade. Avoid universal performance promises.

Troubleshooting after a repair or retrofit

The room is still loud after a new window seal

Recheck the latch and corners, then inspect the frame-to-wall joint, vents, doors and other façade penetrations. If the remaining sound is uniform across the pane, the glazing or another element may be the dominant path.

Noise improved only when a vent is closed

Do not leave the vent permanently blocked. Have a ventilation professional assess a noise-attenuating replacement or a compliant quieter-side arrangement while maintaining required airflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Secondary glazing reduces some noise but not all

Confirm that the inner panel closes continuously, the cavity is unobstructed and the original window is also shut and sealed. Ask whether another façade element or a low-frequency component is limiting the result. A professional assessment may be needed before further work.

Condensation appears after the retrofit

Increase compliant ventilation and seek an assessment of airflow, surface temperatures and moisture sources. Do not simply seal more openings; poorly ventilated rooms have a higher mould risk.

The proposed system interferes with cleaning or escape

Raise access and egress requirements before installation. An inner panel that cannot be safely opened, maintained or used as required is not an acceptable fit even if its acoustic specification looks attractive.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Inspect and map. Locate the loudest path while the window, vents and doors are in their normal closed positions.
  2. Repair only confirmed defects. Replace compatible seals or repair a documented frame joint, preserving drainage and ventilation.
  3. Retest under comparable traffic. If the problem persists, identify whether sound is through the glass or another façade element.
  4. Evaluate secondary glazing. Obtain a complete-system proposal that addresses pane type, cavity, airtightness, condensation and access.
  5. Design ventilation with the acoustic work. Keep required air paths functioning and investigate noise-attenuating background ventilation where needed.
  6. Add comfort measures last. Use close-fitting lined coverings for privacy, light and thermal comfort, without treating them as a guaranteed traffic-noise barrier.

This sequence keeps spending aligned with the actual transmission path and avoids exchanging traffic noise for damp, poor indoor air or an inoperable window.
