Use your phone’s built-in privacy controls to decide which apps may track activity across other companies’ services, access your location, read sensitive data, use the camera or microphone, and receive an advertising identifier. On iPhone, start with Settings > Privacy & Security; on Android, use Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions or Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager. Review permissions app by app, choose the narrowest access that still works, and remember that these controls reduce specific kinds of access—they do not stop every form of data collection or advertising.
What you can—and cannot—turn off
Phone privacy settings control separate channels of access. An app’s permission to use location is different from permission to read contacts, and both are different from cross-app advertising tracking or an advertising ID. Changing one setting does not automatically change the others.
- Cross-app tracking permission: controls whether an app may link activity from other companies’ apps, websites or locations for advertising, measurement or sharing with data brokers.
- Location permission: controls whether an app can obtain your device’s location, and often lets you limit access to use-time, one session or approximate location.
- Sensitive-data permissions: govern access to categories such as contacts, photos, Bluetooth, camera and microphone.
- Advertising ID controls: reset or restrict an identifier used for ad personalization; they do not guarantee that all ads or other tracking stop.
- Privacy reports: show access patterns after you enable reporting, but they are audit tools rather than blocking switches.
Menu names and exact paths vary by iOS or Android release and, on Android, by phone manufacturer. If a path does not match your screen, open Settings and search for terms such as Tracking, Location, Permission manager, Advertising ID or Privacy Report.
Reduce tracking on an iPhone
Block cross-app tracking requests
Apple requires apps to ask before tracking you or your iPhone across websites or apps owned by other companies, for example for advertising or sharing information with data brokers. Tracking in this context means linking identifying information from your device or activity with information from third-party apps, websites or locations.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security, then Tracking.
- Review the list of apps and turn off an individual app’s permission when you do not want to allow it.
- For a blanket choice, turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track. Apps will not receive permission to ask for this cross-app tracking.
Denying the request blocks access to Apple’s advertising identifier (IDFA). Apple says developers may not replace that identifier with another identifying method to track you. This setting addresses cross-company activity linking; it does not prevent an app from collecting information inside its own service, nor does it change data you have separately shared with an account or website.
Limit location access and precision
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Leave Location Services on if you need location-aware features, then select each app to review its permission.
- Choose the least access that supports the feature. Prefer While Using the App when continuous background access is unnecessary. If your iOS version offers a one-time option for that request, use it for a single task.
- Turn off Precise Location when an approximate area is sufficient. A weather, shopping or local-news app may work with an area-level location, while turn-by-turn navigation generally needs greater precision.
- Return to the Location Services screen and open System Services. Review those device-level services separately; several can use location even though they are not ordinary third-party apps.
Turning off Location Services entirely can disable useful features. Apple also warns that emergency location may still be used to aid response efforts. Before revoking access, consider what the app actually does: removing location from a ride, navigation, delivery or safety app can prevent it from providing its main function. You can restore access later if a feature stops working.
Audit activity with App Privacy Report
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Tap App Privacy Report and choose Turn On App Privacy Report.
The report begins collecting only after you enable it. It shows how often and when apps accessed sensitive data and device sensors during the previous seven days, along with network activity. Use it to spot an app that repeatedly accesses a microphone, camera, location or other category when you do not expect it to.
Recommended Free Tools
App Privacy Report does not block access. To change what an app can use, return to the relevant category under Privacy & Security—for example, Microphone, Camera, Photos, Contacts or Bluetooth—and change that app’s permission. Apple says report data is encrypted and stored on the device. Because the window is limited to seven days and starts at activation, an empty report does not prove that an app has never accessed anything.

Review every sensitive-data category
In Settings > Privacy & Security, open each category and remove access an app does not need:
- Contacts: deny access unless the app genuinely needs address-book matching or sharing.
- Photos: select limited photos, when that option is available, instead of the entire library.
- Bluetooth: allow it only for features that discover or communicate with nearby accessories.
- Microphone and Camera: leave access off for apps that never record audio or video.
These device permissions govern the app’s access to that category. They do not change data you already supplied to a separate account, nor do they control a company’s independent collection practices outside the permissioned feature.
Reduce tracking on an Android phone
Review permissions from an individual app
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the app you want to check.
- Tap Permissions.
- Open each sensitive category and choose the narrowest option that still supports the feature.
Google’s documented location choices include All the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time and Don’t allow. The exact choices depend on the Android release and the permission. Use Ask every time for an occasional task, Allow only while using the app for foreground features, and Don’t allow when location is not part of the app’s purpose. Keep All the time for a clear background need such as a safety or automation feature, and reassess that decision periodically.
Some Android versions let you grant one-time access from the permission prompt. If you see that option, it is useful for a single search, photo or nearby-place lookup without leaving standing access.

Review by permission category
- Open Settings.
- Tap Security & Privacy, then Privacy.
- Open Permission manager.
- Select a category such as Location, Camera, Microphone, Contacts or Photos to see every app with that access.
- Open each app and downgrade or remove access that is not necessary.
This category view is useful for finding forgotten grants. A single app-by-app review can miss an old utility or game; sorting by category exposes all apps that can reach the same type of data. If your manufacturer uses different labels, search Settings for Permission manager or permissions.
Pause activity for apps you rarely use
For an app you open only occasionally, open its Unused app settings and enable Pause app activity if unused where available. Android can then reduce background activity and handle unused permissions for that app. The feature is not present or labeled identically on every device, so check the app’s settings page and your phone’s Settings search.
Do not apply this blindly to apps that must deliver alerts, synchronize information or provide safety functions in the background. If notifications or automation stop, revisit the unused-app setting and the app’s permissions.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use device-wide camera and microphone switches
Android documents device-wide camera and microphone access controls under its privacy controls. When you need a quick hardware-level pause, open Settings > Security & Privacy > Privacy and look for the camera or microphone controls. Turning a switch off can stop every app from using that sensor until you turn it back on; this is broader than revoking one app’s permission and may interrupt calls, voice assistants, scanning or video features.

Control the advertising identifier
What the Android Advertising ID setting changes
Google Play Help documents two related actions: reset the Advertising ID and opt out of Ads Personalization in Google or Ads settings. The Advertising ID is an identifier that can be used for ad personalization. Resetting it gives you a new identifier; opting out limits personalization associated with that identifier.
These choices do not erase information an app already holds, stop contextual advertising, or prevent every network from personalizing ads. Google cautions that some ad networks may continue personalized advertising if they have not transitioned to the relevant opt-out. The documented path can differ on newer Android releases, so use Settings search for Advertising ID, Ads or Ads personalization.
How this differs from iPhone tracking permission
On iPhone, Tracking governs an app’s request to link activity across other companies’ apps and websites and blocks IDFA access when denied. On Android, Advertising ID controls address an advertising identifier and personalization. Neither setting is a universal “stop tracking” button: apps can still operate their own accounts, collect information needed for their service and receive other data for which you granted permission.

| Question | iPhone | Android |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you start? | Settings > Privacy & Security; Tracking, Location Services and individual data categories are separate screens. | Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions, or Security & Privacy > Privacy > Permission manager; labels vary by release and manufacturer. |
| Can access be limited to foreground use? | Often: choose While Using the App for location. Some requests may offer one-time access. | Yes: location commonly offers Allow only while using the app; some releases also offer Ask every time or one-time access. |
| Is approximate location available? | Yes: turn off Precise Location for an app. | Availability and wording depend on Android release and manufacturer; inspect the location permission screen for an approximate option. |
| What activity or identifier is addressed? | Tracking permission addresses cross-company activity linking and IDFA access; separate permissions address location and sensitive data. | Permissions address app access to data and sensors; Advertising ID settings address identifier-based ad personalization. |
| What may stop when access is denied? | Location-aware, navigation, delivery, safety or nearby-device features may lose functionality; disabling all Location Services can affect important features, while emergency location may still be used. | Features that need the denied permission—such as navigation, scanning, calls, recording, nearby-device connections or background alerts—may stop or ask again. |
A practical privacy review routine
Start with apps that have the most access
Open your permission list by category and begin with apps you no longer recognize, rarely use or did not expect to need a sensor. Then check apps with background location, camera, microphone, contacts or full photo-library access. Ask what task requires each permission, not whether the app is popular or familiar.

Use the minimum access that still works
- Choose foreground or one-time location for a one-off task.
- Use approximate location when an exact position is unnecessary.
- Grant selected photos instead of an entire library when the phone offers that choice.
- Keep camera, microphone, contacts and Bluetooth off until a feature requests them.
- Revisit permissions after an app update or when its purpose changes.
Check what changed after revoking access
Open the app and test the feature you care about. If it fails, restore only the specific permission required rather than granting every category. For example, a navigation app may need location while in use but not contacts; a photo editor may need selected photos but not continuous location. This approach preserves the function while avoiding unrelated access.
Use reports as evidence, not proof of safety
On iPhone, App Privacy Report can reveal access frequency and network activity after activation. Treat unusual activity as a prompt to inspect permissions and the app’s privacy policy, not as proof that a company violated a rule. A report covers only the recent collection window, and no report can show data an app collected before you enabled it or information handled outside the device.
What these settings do not stop
- Data you already submitted: revoking Contacts or Photos access does not delete copies previously uploaded to an account.
- In-app collection: an app can still collect information you provide while using its service, subject to its own policies and applicable law.
- Server-side or account linking: device permissions do not change sharing configured in a separate account, browser or website.
- All advertising: turning off an advertising identifier or cross-app tracking does not remove ads; it mainly limits particular personalization mechanisms.
- Network visibility: these controls do not make your internet connection anonymous or prevent every form of network metadata collection.
For those issues, review the app’s account privacy controls, delete data you no longer want stored where the service allows it, and consider what information you choose to enter. Do not assume a permission change retroactively removes existing records.
Troubleshooting when a setting or feature is missing
The menu path is different
Use Settings search rather than following an exact path from another phone. Search for the feature name, then check whether your operating-system version or manufacturer has placed it under a different heading. Android documentation explicitly notes that some steps work only on certain releases.
An app keeps asking for access
Choose the limited option or deny the request. If the app cannot perform a function without access, decide whether that function is worth the data exposure. You can grant access temporarily, complete the task, and revoke it again. Repeated prompts do not mean the app should receive permanent access.
A feature stopped working
- Identify the exact feature that failed.
- Open the app’s permission screen.
- Restore only the related permission, preferably while-in-use or one-time access.
- Test the feature and leave unrelated categories disabled.
If the issue persists, check whether the app requires a separate account setting or background permission. A permission toggle cannot substitute for an app’s own configuration.
You expected the advertising setting to remove all personalized ads
Confirm that you changed the advertising identifier or cross-app tracking control, then remember its scope. Contextual ads and personalization based on other signals may remain, and some networks may not honor an opt-out immediately. The setting reduces one identifier-based pathway; it is not a guarantee that every ad becomes non-personalized.

A concise checklist
- Open your phone’s privacy settings and search if the documented path differs.
- Review cross-app tracking on iPhone and deny requests you do not want to allow.
- Check location app by app; prefer while-in-use, one-time or approximate access where suitable.
- Inspect system-level location services separately on iPhone.
- Review camera, microphone, contacts, photos and Bluetooth permissions.
- Enable iPhone App Privacy Report if you want a seven-day access and network-activity audit.
- On Android, check unused-app settings for software you rarely open.
- Use Android’s Advertising ID reset and Ads Personalization controls with realistic expectations.
- Test important features after each change and restore only the permission they require.
- Remember that these controls limit access going forward; they do not erase data already shared or stop every kind of tracking.
