The fastest way to stop an AI coding assistant from burning through tokens is to control what it sees and how long it works: give it one narrowly defined task, point to specific files and symbols instead of pasting whole files, route routine work to a less expensive model, keep instruction files short, enable only relevant tools, preserve prompt-cache reuse, and set a session budget with usage monitoring.
These changes reduce waste without forcing you to accept lower-quality code. They target the four biggest controllable causes of overuse: repeated context, long mixed-topic sessions, unnecessarily costly models, and tool definitions that are loaded even when they are not used.
Why coding assistants use more tokens than expected
A coding assistant consumes tokens in both the instructions it receives and the answer it generates. The input can include your latest request, earlier conversation turns, repository instructions, selected source files, command output, and the names and schemas of enabled tools. A short-looking question can therefore trigger a large bill when the surrounding context is large.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Driver | What happens | First remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Repeated context | Earlier messages, pasted code, logs, and instructions are sent again on later turns. | Start a focused session, reference paths, and remove stale material. |
| Mixed-topic sessions | A thread that moves from a build failure to documentation, then to an unrelated feature carries all three problems forward. | Use a new session for each phase or unrelated problem. |
| Model over-selection | A high-reasoning model spends more tokens on easy edits than the task requires. | Use a lightweight or mid-tier model for routine work. |
| Tool-definition overhead | Every enabled extension or MCP tool contributes a name, description, and parameter schema to the context. | Enable only task-relevant tools or use on-demand tool search. |
Anthropic explains the repeated-context effect plainly: “Every previous message is resent on every turn, so a session that has wandered through three unrelated problems pays for all three on each new message.” Anything pasted also remains in the session in full. Read the current Claude Code usage and limits guidance for product-specific behavior.

Cache behavior changes the economics. Visual Studio Code reports that, for most OpenAI models supporting cached-input pricing, uncached input tokens cost 10 times as much as cached input tokens. A stable, reusable prompt prefix can therefore matter almost as much as making the prompt shorter. The exact prices and cache rules depend on the model and service; treat the 10-times figure as the comparison published by Visual Studio Code, not a universal rate.
1. Start with a small, explicit task
Do not begin with “understand this repository and fix anything that is wrong.” Give the assistant a bounded contract that can finish in one pass or a small number of deliberate turns.
- State one outcome. Example: “Add validation for duplicate email addresses in the registration endpoint.”
- Define success. Specify the expected behavior, error shape, tests, and compatibility constraints.
- Name the scope. List the files, directories, classes, or functions the assistant may inspect or change.
- Set exclusions. Say which generated files, migrations, unrelated modules, or formatting changes must not be touched.
- Choose the response format. Ask for a plan first, a patch, test commands, or a concise explanation rather than all of them by default.
Separate research, planning, and implementation. GitHub recommends distinct phases and starting a new session between phases so irrelevant context does not carry forward. A practical sequence is:
- Use a short discovery session to identify the relevant symbols and constraints.
- Open a fresh planning session containing only that map and the acceptance criteria.
- Start implementation in a new thread with the approved plan and the exact files in scope.
- Run tests and review in a final, focused session if the tool or model tends to retain a long implementation history.
This structure also makes failures easier to diagnose: if the implementation is wrong, you can distinguish a bad plan from a bad edit instead of asking one ever-growing thread to repair itself.
2. Send less context without hiding necessary facts
Point to paths and symbols
Tell the assistant where the relevant code lives: “Inspect src/auth/register.ts, function createUser, and the test file test/auth/register.test.ts.” Let it retrieve those targeted sections when the environment supports file access. Referring to a path and function is cheaper and easier to update than pasting an entire file into the conversation.

Trim logs and stack traces
Keep the 20–30 lines around the first meaningful error, including the command and the exit status. Remove repeated framework banners, successful test output, timestamps, and duplicated stack frames. If the complete dump is needed for later inspection, save it on disk and provide its path rather than pasting it; ask the assistant to search that file for the first cause and relevant call sites.
Use a project map instead of a repository-wide scan
A small map can list the application entry point, package manager, test command, major directories, and ownership boundaries. It gives the assistant orientation without forcing it to read every file. Ask for targeted searches such as a symbol name, route, configuration key, or error code. Broad scans are appropriate only when the question itself is about repository-wide usage, such as finding every caller of a deprecated API.
Do not paste context that the tool can fetch
Copying a file into a prompt and then asking the assistant to open the same file duplicates the input. Pick one method. When a tool cannot access a private or generated file, paste only the smallest excerpt that proves the behavior and label omitted sections clearly.
3. Match model effort to the job
Model choice is a routing decision, not a permanent preference. Use the least expensive model that can meet the task’s risk and reasoning requirements.
| Work type | Suitable tier | Examples | Quality safeguard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mechanical | Lightweight | Renames, boilerplate, straightforward log changes, simple explanations, formatting fixes. | Run the formatter and a focused test. |
| Routine engineering | Mid-tier | Most features, known bugs, ordinary refactors, test additions, API wiring. | Require a patch plus deterministic tests. |
| High-risk reasoning | Most capable reasoning model | Architecture decisions, cross-cutting refactors, ambiguous failures, concurrency or security debugging. | Ask for assumptions, a plan, and reviewable evidence before editing. |
Choose the model before a long session when cache reuse matters. GitHub notes that switching models during a session can invalidate the cache; model switches, reasoning changes, context-size changes, and tool changes are all potential invalidators. If a routine edit follows a difficult design discussion, opening a new session with a compact specification can cost less than changing models inside the old thread.
4. Keep repository instruction files lean
Files such as AGENTS.md, .github/copilot-instructions.md, and CLAUDE.md are useful because they prevent the assistant from rediscovering conventions. They are expensive when they contain generic advice, obsolete commands, or a full style manual that applies to only one directory.

What to keep
- Required build, test, lint, and formatting commands.
- Language and framework versions that affect generated code.
- Directory ownership and the location of important configuration.
- Non-obvious conventions, compatibility rules, and recurring review corrections.
- Explicit prohibitions, such as generated files that must never be edited.
What to remove
- Advice the model already follows reliably.
- Long tutorials, duplicated README content, and historical explanations.
- Rules for technologies no longer in the repository.
- Examples that are much longer than the rule they illustrate.
Anthropic recommends keeping CLAUDE.md under roughly 200 lines because it is prepended to every turn. The same principle applies to other instruction files: put broad policy in a human-maintained document, and keep the always-loaded file to the small set of facts an agent needs on every task. Place directory-specific rules in the narrowest applicable file so unrelated work does not inherit them.
5. Reduce tool-definition overhead
Enabled tools consume context before the assistant performs any work. An MCP server or extension contributes its tool names, descriptions, and parameter schemas; a large collection can crowd out source code and the actual request.
- List the tools needed for the current task: for example, a source-control tool and a test runner for a code change.
- Disable unrelated browser, ticketing, deployment, or data tools for that session.
- Prefer on-demand tool search when the client supports it, so heavy schemas load only when selected.
- Review duplicate tools that expose the same operation with different names.
- Keep tool descriptions precise. A short description reduces ambiguity and helps the assistant choose the right operation on the first attempt.
Visual Studio Code describes the benefit of tool search as “a leaner context window”: the model spends fewer tokens on tools it never uses, leaving more room and budget for the coding task. Tool search does not make an unsafe tool safe; retain approval gates for commands that can delete data, publish code, or change infrastructure.
6. Preserve cache reuse and reset stale threads
Keep the repeated prefix stable
Put stable instructions first: repository rules, the task contract, and a short project map. Append changing details such as a new error excerpt after that prefix. Avoid rewriting the same instructions in slightly different words on every turn; a stable prefix is more likely to be reusable by the service’s cache.
Know what can invalidate a cache
- Switching models or reasoning settings.
- Changing the context-size setting.
- Adding, removing, or reconfiguring tools.
- Editing the instruction prefix.
- Long inactivity, depending on the service’s retention policy.
Cache retention and invalidation rules vary by provider and model. Do not assume that a cached token is free or that it remains cached indefinitely; check the current pricing and usage documentation for the model you use.

Compact or clear at the right time
When a Copilot CLI thread must continue but has grown large, run /compact to summarize the history and shrink the context window, as documented by GitHub. Use compaction when the current task still needs decisions made earlier in the thread.
Use /clear for an unrelated Claude Code task so old context is removed. Use /compact instead when a concise summary is still necessary. In either case, verify the summary: a missing constraint can cause more tokens later when the assistant has to undo an incorrect edit.
7. Add guardrails and measure actual use
Set a session limit before an agent run
Configure the client or account’s per-session AI-credit or usage limit before starting an autonomous task. A limit turns a runaway loop into a visible stop. Leave enough allowance for tests and one repair pass, but do not grant an unlimited budget by default.
Recommended Free Tools
Watch the usage indicators
- In Copilot, use
/contextto inspect context and/chroniclecost tips where those commands are available in your client. - In Codex, check the usage dashboard or
/statusfor allowance and reset information. - Record which model, tools, and session length were used when a task is unusually expensive.
Usage dashboards are diagnostic, not just billing screens. A sudden increase after adding an MCP server points to tool-schema overhead; a steady increase each turn points to repeated context; a single expensive run may indicate that the model tier was too high for the task.
Make correctness cheap
Add deterministic tests, linters, and formatters to the normal workflow. They prevent the assistant from spending additional turns repairing avoidable syntax and style errors. Ask for the smallest test command that covers the changed code, then run the full suite only when the change warrants it.

Vendor-specific controls and where to verify them
GitHub Copilot
GitHub’s usage-optimization guidance recommends focused prompts, separate phases, and cache-conscious model selection. Use a session limit before an agent task, inspect context and cost tips where supported, and use /compact in Copilot CLI when you need to continue a large thread. Credit definitions and plan allowances are documented in the individual usage-based billing page and can change.
Claude Code
Keep CLAUDE.md short because it is loaded on every turn. Start a new session for an unrelated problem, use /clear when no prior context is needed, and use /compact when a verified summary is useful. The Claude Code models, usage, and limits article describes current model and limit behavior.

What current Copilot credit figures mean
GitHub’s individual-plan information accessed on October 16, 2026 lists one AI credit as $0.01 USD. The same table lists these monthly allowances and prices:
| Plan | Monthly price shown | Total monthly AI credits shown | Approximate face value at $0.01 per credit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $10 per month | 1,500 | $15 |
| Pro+ | $39 per month | 7,000 | $70 |
| Max | $100 per month | 20,000 | $200 |
These are volatile published plan values, not a promise of future pricing or of how many tokens a particular task will consume. Verify the current figures and regional terms on GitHub’s billing page before budgeting. A credit allowance also does not mean every model or request has the same credit multiplier.
How to choose a low-token workflow
When comparing assistants or configuring one for a team, evaluate the workflow rather than the brand name. The important axes are:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Axis | Questions to ask | Why it affects usage |
|---|---|---|
| Context selection | Can you specify files, symbols, line ranges, or a project map? | Fine-grained selection prevents irrelevant code from entering every turn. |
| Model routing | Can routine edits use a cheaper model while difficult debugging uses a stronger one? | Effort matches risk instead of charging maximum reasoning for every task. |
| Cache behavior | What is cached, for how long, and what invalidates it? | Stable prefixes can reduce repeated input cost; changes may remove that benefit. |
| Tool loading | Are tools disabled by default or searched on demand? | Unused schemas consume context and can distract the model. |
| Compaction and reset | Are there commands to summarize or clear a thread? | You can preserve needed decisions without carrying every old message. |
| Usage visibility | Can you inspect context size, allowance, and reset time? | Measurement reveals which workflow change actually helped. |
| Budget controls | Can you set a per-session or account limit? | A runaway loop stops before exhausting the allowance. |
| Quality safeguards | Can tests, linters, approvals, and review remain in the loop? | Lower token use is not a saving if it creates expensive rework. |
Troubleshooting: symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Usage rises on every short follow-up | The thread is resending a large history or pasted file. | Compact or clear the thread; restart with a path, symbol, and a short verified summary. |
| The assistant spends many turns searching | The task scope is vague or the repository lacks a map. | Name the target directory and symbols, then ask for a bounded plan before edits. |
| Costs jump after enabling an extension | Tool names and schemas are now included in context. | Disable unrelated tools or switch to on-demand search. |
| A simple rename uses a costly model | Model tier is set globally rather than per task. | Route mechanical work to a lightweight model and run tests. |
| Compaction produces incorrect edits | The summary omitted a constraint or decision. | Review and correct the summary before allowing further changes; include acceptance criteria explicitly. |
| Cache savings disappear mid-task | A model, reasoning, context-size, or tool setting changed, or the cache expired. | Keep the prefix and settings stable, or begin a fresh session with a concise specification. |
| The agent loops until the allowance is gone | No session budget or stopping condition was set. | Add a session limit, require a plan and test command, and stop after a defined number of repair attempts. |
A practical operating checklist
- Write one sentence describing the outcome and list measurable acceptance criteria.
- Name the files, symbols, and command the assistant should use; exclude unrelated areas.
- Provide only the relevant log excerpt or a path to the full log.
- Choose a lightweight, mid-tier, or reasoning model based on task risk.
- Load only the tools required for that task.
- Keep the instruction prefix stable and avoid changing settings mid-session.
- Set a session budget and identify the stop condition before execution.
- Run the narrowest deterministic test, lint, or formatter command after the edit.
- Compact a still-relevant long thread; clear it when the next task is unrelated.
- Inspect usage and record the cause whenever a run is unexpectedly expensive.
There is no evidence for a universal percentage reduction that applies to every assistant. The reliable gains come from controlling context, model effort, tool schemas, cache stability, and stopping conditions—and then verifying the result in the service’s own usage view.
