To reduce the spread of flu or COVID at home, keep the sick person apart from others as much as household circumstances allow, improve indoor air, wear a well-fitting mask when sharing space, and keep up basic hygiene. Once symptoms are improving overall and any fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine, a person can return to normal activities under CDC’s general guidance—but should use added precautions for five more days. These steps lower risk; they cannot guarantee that nobody else in the household will get sick.
What to do first when someone at home gets sick
Start with the measures that reduce exposure while the person is ill: spend less time close together, bring in outdoor air where feasible and safe, and use a well-fitting mask if people must share indoor space. Add hand hygiene, cough etiquette, and routine cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. No single measure is a guarantee, and CDC does not give one room-by-room isolation plan or a universally safe distance for every home.
Flu and COVID-19 can both spread through the air, particularly indoors and in crowded spaces. Their prevention guidance therefore has important overlap. CDC also notes that flu can spread when someone touches a contaminated surface and then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth, although this is less common than person-to-person spread. That is a reason to keep up basic hygiene, not to treat surface disinfection as the main household control.

A useful order is to make the biggest feasible changes first: limit unnecessary close contact, improve the air in shared rooms, and mask when contact cannot be avoided. Then keep up with cough etiquette, hand hygiene, and cleaning of frequently touched surfaces. These layers can be used together; you do not need to wait until one is perfect before starting another.

Use a practical sequence while the person is sick
1. Create as much separation as your household can manage
Have the person who is sick stay home and away from household members who are not sick as much as circumstances allow. Reduce time spent close together and increase the space between people when they are in the same area. More space can reduce exposure, but CDC does not identify a distance that makes contact risk-free.
There is no single CDC room assignment that works for every home. Use the space and caregiving arrangements available to your household rather than treating a particular bedroom, bathroom, or floor plan as a universal requirement. If separation is not practical—for example, because someone needs care—use the other layers together: cleaner air, a well-fitting mask while sharing indoor space, and basic hygiene.
Think of separation as reducing avoidable time together, rather than as an all-or-nothing test. If household members can spend less time in the same room, or leave more space between them when together, those changes can reduce exposure. If care or the home layout means that people must be close, focus on the precautions that can still be used during those interactions. No particular arrangement makes a home automatically safe.
2. Improve the air in rooms people share
Bring in outdoor air by opening doors or windows when feasible and safe. Run kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans to help move indoor air out. If you have a portable HEPA air cleaner, use it as directed for the space. For a central HVAC system with a filter, CDC advises using pleated filters and setting the fan to “on” rather than “auto” when visitors are present; follow the system and filter manufacturer’s instructions.
These steps improve indoor air and lower exposure risk, but they do not make a room infection-proof. Choose changes that are workable in your home: a window may not be appropriate in every weather or security situation, and HVAC settings or filters should be handled according to the equipment instructions. CDC’s cleaner-air guidance describes approaches, not a claim that a specific appliance or setting will prevent transmission.
Start with the options already available. A window or door can bring in outdoor air when opening it is safe and practical. Exhaust fans in a kitchen or bathroom are another way to move air out. If there is central HVAC, check the equipment guidance before changing settings or filters. A portable cleaner is an additional option, not a prerequisite for taking other steps.
3. Mask when indoor contact cannot be avoided
When the sick person and other household members need to share indoor space, consider a well-fitting mask. CDC says masks can reduce spread from an infected person and protect the wearer from infectious particles. Fit matters: choose the most protective mask you can comfortably wear for extended periods, and make sure it fits over both your nose and mouth. Different masks provide different levels of protection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA mask is one layer, not a substitute for separation or cleaner air. A mask that is uncomfortable to keep on or does not fit well may be harder to use consistently, so comfort and fit are practical parts of the choice. CDC does not endorse a particular brand or model in the guidance cited here.
When comparing masks, consider whether the design fits closely over the nose and mouth and whether the wearer can keep it on comfortably for extended periods. The most protective option is not useful in practice if it cannot be worn as intended. The goal is a mask that fits well and can be used consistently during shared indoor contact, alongside other steps where possible.

4. Keep up with cough etiquette and hand hygiene
- Cover coughs and sneezes.
- Wash hands regularly. If soap and water are unavailable, use hand sanitizer containing at least 60% alcohol.
- Clean frequently touched surfaces with household soap- or detergent-based cleaners.
These measures address everyday routes of spread without shifting the focus away from cleaner air and reducing close contact. For flu, contaminated surfaces can be a route of infection, but CDC describes this as less common than person-to-person spread. A cleaning routine does not replace ventilation, masking, or staying apart when possible.
Keep the hygiene steps simple and repeatable: cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands regularly, and clean frequently touched surfaces. Sanitizer is an alternative when soap and water are not available, not a reason to skip handwashing when you can wash. Use a product with at least 60% alcohol. These actions fit alongside the air and contact measures rather than replacing them.

5. Take extra care when someone is at higher risk
A household member at greater risk of severe illness should be especially careful with added protections. If that person becomes ill, seek health care promptly: CDC notes that treatments for both flu and COVID-19 are available for people at higher risk. The steps in this guide are household prevention measures, not a substitute for medical care or clinician-specific instructions.
Where possible, make the precautions that reduce shared exposure a priority around that person: spend less time close together, improve air in shared rooms, and use a well-fitting mask when indoor contact is necessary. Continue hygiene measures as well. If the person becomes ill, prompt contact with a health care professional matters because treatments are available for people at higher risk. Follow advice specific to that person rather than relying on household precautions as treatment.
When to return to normal activities—and what to do for five more days
CDC’s general public guidance uses symptoms, not a fixed number of days from the start of illness. Both conditions must be true for at least 24 hours before returning to normal activities: symptoms are improving overall, and any fever has been absent without using fever-reducing medicine. This is not a promise that the person can no longer spread a virus.
In practical terms, do not use a certain illness day or a single better hour as the threshold. Look for overall improvement in symptoms and a full 24 hours without fever while not using fever-reducing medicine. If there was no fever, the fever condition is satisfied when there has been no fever; the overall-improvement condition still applies. The return point is based on both conditions, not on one alone.
For the five days after returning to normal activities, CDC advises added precautions when around other people. Examples include cleaner air, hygiene, a well-fitting mask, physical distance, and testing. For a household, these precautions can continue to matter when people are together indoors, especially if someone in the home is more vulnerable to severe illness.
Use whichever combination is workable in the situation. For example, people may improve the air and mask while sharing a room, while also reducing time spent close together. Testing is another CDC-listed option when around others. The five-day period is an added-precaution window; it is not a guarantee that risk has ended when it is over.
If fever returns or symptoms worsen after normal activities resume, stay home and away from others again. Return to normal activities only after the same conditions are met: symptoms are improving overall and any fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine. Then use added precautions for five days after that return.

This is CDC guidance for the general public. Healthcare settings have separate guidance, and a clinician’s instructions or locally applicable requirements may differ. Follow those instructions where they apply.
How to choose and use cleaner-air options at home
Start with what the home already has
Opening doors or windows, running kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans, and using an existing central HVAC system appropriately are practical ways to improve air without assuming that a new product is necessary. Make changes only when feasible and safe, and follow equipment instructions. For central HVAC with a filter, CDC recommends pleated filters and the fan setting “on” rather than “auto” when visitors are present.
For HVAC filters, use pleated filters according to the directions for the system and filter. Do not assume a filter can be replaced with any option or that equipment settings should be changed without regard to manufacturer instructions. The point is to use the system appropriately to support cleaner air, not to make a modification that the equipment guidance does not support.
Consider a portable HEPA air cleaner for the space
A portable HEPA air cleaner is an option CDC includes in its cleaner-air guidance. If you are comparing units, check whether the model is suited to the room size, whether replacement filters are available and affordable, how much noise it makes, and whether its operating instructions are easy to follow. Those are useful decision factors, not evidence that one model has been tested or endorsed by CDC.
Compare the total practical burden, not just the purchase decision. A cleaner needs to suit the room where it will be used, and replacement filters need to be both obtainable and affordable over time. Noise may affect whether people are willing to run it, while clear operating instructions make it easier to use as directed. No price range or named model is established by CDC’s guidance, so compare current product details rather than assuming that a higher price guarantees a better result.

The evidence cited here supports the product category as one way to improve air; it does not establish a particular model’s performance in your home or quantify how much a specific unit will reduce household transmission. A purifier should complement—not replace—separation, ventilation, masking when sharing space, and hygiene.
Other relevant purchases may include a well-fitting mask, a replacement pleated HVAC filter appropriate for the system, or hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol for times when soap and water are unavailable. These are supporting tools. A product by itself does not prevent infection, and the basic household steps do not depend on buying a new appliance.

Combining several layers is more useful than relying on a single action, but the CDC guidance cited here does not give a numerical estimate of how much a particular combination reduces household flu or COVID-19 transmission. There is no justified percentage to promise, and no method in this guide guarantees that other household members will avoid infection.
The timing recommendations are actionable thresholds rather than efficacy statistics: wait until symptoms are improving overall and any fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine before returning to normal activities, then take added precautions for five days. The best practical plan is the one your household can apply consistently while maintaining separation and cleaner air as circumstances allow.

Likewise, a cleaner, mask, or cleaning routine should not be described as a complete solution. Each is one part of a broader approach. CDC’s guidance supports improving air, using masks, maintaining hygiene, and reducing exposure; it does not assign a specific percentage of protection to a particular device, mask, or household combination.
Which guidance applies
The CDC public guidance summarized here includes pages dated August 18, 2025, for staying home, cleaner air, masks, and hygiene; a flu prevention page reviewed September 3, 2025; and a COVID-19 prevention page updated March 10, 2025. Public-health recommendations can change, so check current CDC guidance and follow any applicable local or clinician instructions.
Frequently Asked Questions
When can I go back to normal activities after a respiratory illness?
CDC’s general public guidance says to wait until symptoms are improving overall and any fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine. After returning, take added precautions for five days, such as cleaner air, hygiene, a well-fitting mask, physical distance, or testing when around other people. If fever returns or symptoms worsen, stay home again and resume activities only after the same conditions are met.
How can I improve the air in my home when someone is sick?
When feasible and safe, open doors or windows to bring in outdoor air, run kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans, and use a portable HEPA air cleaner according to its instructions. If you have central HVAC with a filter, CDC advises using pleated filters and setting the fan to “on” rather than “auto” when visitors are present. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the system and filter.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is there a safe distance to keep from someone with flu or COVID at home?
CDC does not specify one universally safe distance for every home. More space and less time spent close together can reduce exposure, but do not make contact risk-free. If you cannot avoid close contact, combine other measures such as improving air, wearing a well-fitting mask, and keeping up with hygiene.
Do I need to buy an air purifier to reduce spread at home?
No. A portable HEPA air cleaner is one option, but CDC also recommends bringing in outdoor air when feasible and safe, using exhaust fans, and using central HVAC appropriately. If comparing cleaners, consider room-size suitability, noise, replacement-filter availability and cost, and whether the operating instructions are easy to follow. No single product guarantees prevention.
Does cleaning surfaces stop flu and COVID from spreading?
Cleaning frequently touched surfaces with household soap- or detergent-based cleaners is part of basic hygiene. CDC notes that flu can spread through contaminated surfaces, though this is less common than person-to-person spread. Surface cleaning should complement—not replace—cleaner air, reduced close contact, masking when sharing space, and hand hygiene.
What if someone at higher risk of severe illness gets sick?
CDC advises people at greater risk to take particular care with added protections. If they become ill, seek health care promptly, because treatments for flu and COVID-19 are available for people at higher risk. Follow any clinician-specific instructions.

The Bottom Line
While someone is sick, reduce close contact as much as your household can, improve the air in shared spaces, mask when indoor contact is necessary, and keep up with cough etiquette and hand hygiene. Return to normal activities only after symptoms are improving overall and any fever has been absent for 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine; continue added precautions for five days. These steps lower risk but cannot guarantee that others at home will avoid infection.
