To reduce the risk of stings at home, keep food and rubbish covered, stay calm around a lone flying insect, and judge a nest by how close it is to places people use. A nest in a quiet, out-of-the-way spot may be left alone; one beside a doorway or walkway may need control. The treatment guidance below applies to yellowjackets and paper wasps—not every insect people call a bee.
Make food and rubbish less attractive to stinging insects
Some yellowjackets become aggressive scavengers around human food and drinks in late summer and fall, according to University of Minnesota Extension. Put food away promptly when you finish eating outdoors, and discard leftovers and scraps in a garbage container with a tight-fitting lid. These steps are especially useful around patios and other gathering areas.
NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, also advises keeping work areas clean because discarded food can attract stinging insects. Its workplace guidance suggests covering more of the body with clothing, avoiding perfumed toiletries, and wearing light-colored, smooth-finished clothing. These are practical precautions, not a guarantee against stings or a substitute for advice about insects in your area.

What to do when an insect is flying nearby
If one insect is circling
Remain calm and still if a single stinging insect flies around you, NIOSH advises. Swatting may provoke a sting. Give it space and let it move away rather than striking at it.

If several insects attack
Run to get away and go indoors, following NIOSH guidance. Do not jump into water. Bees release a chemical when they sting that can attract other bees, so moving away from the area is more useful than trying to fend off a group.
Decide what to do about a nest based on its location
First consider where the nest is, how visible it is, and whether you can identify the insect. University of Minnesota Extension says an out-of-the-way yellowjacket or paper wasp nest can be ignored. A nest in a high-traffic spot—such as beside a walkway or near a doorway—may warrant control. The extension notes that suitable options depend on the nest’s location and the time of year.

| Situation | Reasonable response |
|---|---|
| Yellowjacket or paper wasp nest away from places people use | Leaving it alone is an option, according to University of Minnesota Extension. |
| Visible yellowjacket or paper wasp nest near a walkway, doorway, or other active area | Control may be warranted. Extension guidance describes an aerosol labeled for wasps and hornets as one treatment option for some visible nests; follow the product label and its protective directions. |
| Nest is concealed, hard to reach, or close to people using the area | Consider professional pest-control help rather than attempting a treatment that you cannot carry out safely. |
Do not treat the extension’s wasp-nest instructions as guidance for every bee species or every nest. If you cannot identify the insect or nest, or cannot follow the treatment label and protective directions, avoid disturbing it and seek qualified help. The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology advises trained-professional removal of known or suspected nests near the home in the patient context it addresses; this is not a universal household pest-control rule.

NIOSH’s guidance is written for workers and addresses general exposure precautions. University of Minnesota Extension provides the detailed household guidance here for yellowjackets and paper wasps. Neither source establishes a complete, species-specific guide for every region, so local identification matters when deciding how to handle a nest.
