Choose the least energy-intensive AI capability that can do the job. If a text answer is enough, use text rather than generating video or invoking intensive reasoning or an agent-like workflow without a clear benefit. The International Energy Agency (IEA) says these task types can have very different electricity demands per query, but its comparisons do not calculate the savings from any one person’s choices.
How can I reduce the energy footprint of my AI use?
Match the tool and mode to the task. For a short explanation, draft, summary, or simple question, ordinary text interaction may be all you need. Reserve video generation, reasoning-heavy modes, and agentic workflows—where an AI carries out a sequence of steps—for jobs that benefit from those capabilities.
This is a practical way to avoid unnecessary energy-intensive work, not a promise of a specific reduction. The IEA’s 2026 Key Questions on Energy and AI executive summary says: “Simple text queries now typically consume less electricity than running a television over the same period of time.” It also says video generation, reasoning, and agentic tasks can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. Those comparisons describe broad task categories, not a measured footprint for every service or prompt.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the simplest mode that can produce a useful result
- For a straightforward factual question or a short piece of writing, start with a text interaction rather than a media-generation feature.
- Use video generation when the requested result genuinely needs moving images; do not create a video merely because the option is available.
- Choose a reasoning-heavy mode when the job needs more involved analysis, rather than assuming it is necessary for every request.
- Use agent-like workflows when delegating a sequence of tasks is useful. A single response may be enough for a one-step job.
The goal is not to avoid useful AI features. It is to avoid escalating a task into a more intensive category without a reason. A text answer that fails to meet the need may lead to more work; the appropriate choice depends on the job, and the available evidence does not establish a universal energy-optimal setting for each task.

Keep repeated and multi-step work purposeful
Before starting another generation or a multi-step workflow, decide what still needs to change or be completed. If the first result is close, a focused follow-up may be more useful than restarting a broader workflow. That is common-sense task management, not evidence that a particular number of turns or a shorter prompt saves a known amount of electricity.
Do not treat brevity as a verified energy-saving formula. The reviewed sources do not establish a percentage saving from shortening prompts, limiting the number of turns, or changing a device setting. A concise prompt may help clarify the task, but no personal electricity reduction can be assigned to that choice from these sources.
A practical decision before you start
It can help to name the output before opening a tool: “I need a paragraph,” “I need moving images,” “I need a careful comparison,” or “I need several steps completed.” A paragraph or simple explanation points toward text. Moving images may justify a video feature. A complex analysis may justify a reasoning-heavy mode, and a sequence of actions may justify an agentic workflow. This is not a precise energy calculator; it is a way to avoid choosing a more intensive capability before you know you need it.

If the explanation is not enough, identify what is missing and then decide whether a follow-up or a different modality is actually needed. The IEA’s comparison supports distinguishing these task categories, but it does not establish that every text answer will satisfy every request or that a particular sequence of prompts has a known electricity cost.
Does AI video use more energy than a text prompt?
The IEA’s 2026 comparison identifies video generation as a substantially more energy-intensive task category than simple text generation. It groups video generation, reasoning, and agentic tasks among uses that can consume hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. This is a category-level comparison, not a fixed multiplier that applies to every video request, model, or provider.
Individual results can depend on the service, model, task, and how the provider runs it. The cited comparison does not give a standardized per-prompt energy figure for consumer services. It therefore supports a directional choice—avoid generating video when text can do the job—but not a precise calculation of how much electricity a particular user saves by doing so.
How the task categories compare
| Task type | What the IEA comparison establishes | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Simple text query | Typically uses less electricity than running a television over the same period, according to the IEA’s 2026 executive summary. | Use text for jobs that need a text answer. |
| Video generation | Can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation, within the IEA’s broad task-category comparison. | Generate video when moving images are actually needed. |
| Reasoning-heavy task | Included among categories that can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. | Choose intensive reasoning for work that benefits from it, not by default. |
| Agentic workflow | Included among categories that can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. | Use multi-step delegation when the sequence of work is useful. |
The table is not a ranking of providers or a guarantee about each interaction. “Can use” and “typically” matter: the IEA’s summary describes differences among task types, not an exact energy reading attached to a specific request.

The television comparison also needs to be read narrowly. It gives readers a familiar way to understand the scale of a typical simple text query over a comparable period of time. It does not say that every query uses the same amount as a specific television, identify an exact number of watt-hours per prompt, or make television electricity a proxy for a video or reasoning task. The separate comparison between simple text and more intensive categories is likewise directional at the category level.
“Hundreds or thousands of times” is striking, but it should not be turned into a universal multiplier for personal calculations. A particular task may differ from the broad category; providers may use different models and infrastructure; and the IEA comparison is not a standardized product-by-product test. It is enough to support a sensible choice about whether the more intensive category is needed, not enough to calculate an exact bill or carbon footprint for an individual interaction.
Can I tell how much electricity one AI prompt uses?
Not from the cited IEA figures. They describe comparisons among tasks and electricity use at data-centre, regional, or global scales. They do not assign a measured amount of cloud inference electricity to an individual consumer prompt.
A local device power meter does not solve that attribution problem. It can report electricity used by the device it measures, but the cited sources do not provide a method for translating that reading into the electricity used by a remote data centre to process a particular AI request. A prompt’s apparent simplicity also does not reveal the service’s model, hardware, workload, or facility conditions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What a credible provider-specific number would need to explain
A provider figure is more useful when it states what was measured and where the measurement boundary lies. For example, a figure could refer to a single task, a model run, a facility, or a broader service total; these are not interchangeable. It should also explain the task or modality and the method used to attribute electricity to the result.
- Is the number per task, per request, per facility, or for a larger group of workloads?
- Does it cover text, image, video, reasoning, or an agentic workflow?
- What electricity use is included, and what is outside the measurement boundary?
- Is the methodology sufficiently clear to compare it with another provider’s figure?
The reviewed IEA sources do not provide a standardized table comparing consumer AI services on these terms. Without comparable provider-specific measurements, a precise claim about which service or prompt uses less electricity is not established.
What not to infer from a prompt or a device reading
A short prompt is not automatically a low-energy request, and a long prompt is not automatically a high-energy one. The visible text does not disclose how a service processes the request. Likewise, a phone or computer’s power draw is not a meter for electricity consumed by remote servers. A device reading and a data-centre total have different measurement boundaries, so one cannot be used to calculate the other without an attribution method.

These limits matter when comparing tools, too. A product that advertises an energy figure may be measuring a different task, system boundary, or aggregation level than another product. Unless the providers disclose compatible task definitions and methods, comparing the figures as though they were measurements of the same thing can be misleading. The IEA material reviewed here does not supply a standardized consumer-service leaderboard.
What do data-centre electricity figures tell us?
They show why AI-related electricity demand matters at infrastructure scale, but they cannot be divided into a personal prompt footprint. The IEA reported that data centres consumed about 415 terawatt-hours (TWh), or 1.5% of global electricity, in 2024. In its 2026 analysis, it reported that data-centre electricity use grew 17% in 2025 and electricity use at AI-focused data centres grew 50% that year. It projects total data-centre electricity consumption to rise from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030.
| Measure | IEA figure | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Data-centre electricity consumption, 2024 | About 415 TWh, or 1.5% of global electricity | Global data-centre use in the IEA’s 2025 report. |
| Growth in data-centre electricity use, 2025 | 17% | Aggregate growth reported by the IEA in 2026. |
| Growth at AI-focused data centres, 2025 | 50% | Growth reported by the IEA in 2026 for AI-focused data centres. |
| Projected data-centre electricity consumption, 2025 to 2030 | 485 TWh to 950 TWh | IEA projection reported in 2026. |
The 2024 consumption figure and the 2025 figure used as the starting point for the projection come from different reporting years and should not be treated as one directly interchangeable measurement series without the underlying definitions. In either case, these are infrastructure totals, not the electricity cost of an average AI query. They cannot tell an individual user how much electricity a particular interaction consumed.
Why efficiency does not settle the demand question
More efficient systems can reduce the electricity needed for a given task, while wider adoption and new energy-intensive applications can increase total demand. The IEA describes efficiency, adoption, and expanding capabilities as interacting trends; a gain in per-task efficiency does not by itself show that overall data-centre electricity use will fall.
Facility composition also matters. The IEA’s 2025 report says servers account for around 60% of electricity demand in modern data centres on average, while noting that shares vary by facility type. That figure describes an average infrastructure component share—not the portion of electricity attributable to a particular AI request.

How to read the scale figures
A terawatt-hour is a unit for large amounts of electricity, useful for describing national or industry-scale consumption. The IEA’s 415 TWh figure refers to all data centres in 2024, while the later growth rates and projection describe aggregate data-centre use and AI-focused facilities at a different scale. They are context for infrastructure demand, not a conversion table for prompts.
The 50% growth figure specifically concerns electricity use at AI-focused data centres; it is not a claim that every AI request used 50% more electricity, nor that an individual user’s footprint rose by that amount. Similarly, the projection from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030 concerns total data-centre electricity consumption. It is a forward-looking infrastructure projection, not a forecast for any one service or user.

These totals also do not show that AI alone accounts for all data-centre use. The figures are presented as data-centre totals or AI-focused data-centre figures as labeled. Their proper value is to show the scale and direction of electricity demand across infrastructure, not to assign a personal share without more detailed and comparable measurements.
How to choose an AI mode without overusing intensive features
- Define the result. Decide whether you need text, an image, video, a considered analysis, or a sequence of actions. Do not choose a mode before identifying the output the job requires.
- Start with the least intensive plausible option. If a text response could meet the need, begin there. The IEA comparison makes task category relevant, but does not provide a personal savings calculator.
- Escalate only when the result calls for it. Move to video generation, more intensive reasoning, or agent-like execution when the task needs that capability—not simply because it is available.
- Review before repeating. Identify what is missing from the current result and request a targeted change if one is needed. There is no established per-turn energy figure in the cited sources, so avoid treating a specific turn limit as a proven electricity threshold.
- Check what a provider’s energy claim actually measures. Look for its task, scope, boundary, and method before comparing numbers. A facility or global total cannot be read as a per-prompt figure.
Compare claims on like terms
If two services publish energy information, compare the underlying categories before comparing the numbers. First check whether both figures refer to the same modality: simple text generation is not the same task as video generation. Then check whether reasoning or agent-like behavior is involved, whether the value is per task or for a larger collection of work, and how the provider defines the measurement boundary.
A facility-wide measure may be useful for understanding infrastructure performance, but it cannot be fairly compared with a per-request measure without a clear method that links the two. The same applies to a regional or global total: it describes an aggregate, not an individual transaction. The IEA identifies meaningful variation by task and by data-centre type, but the material cited here does not provide standardized rankings of consumer AI providers.
Look for definitions and method, rather than relying on a standalone number. If the task, scope, or boundary is unclear, the figure may still communicate something about the provider’s own system, but it cannot support a like-for-like claim that one consumer service is more efficient than another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this guidance can—and cannot—promise
Choosing text rather than unneeded video, and avoiding a more intensive mode when the task does not call for it, follows from the IEA’s evidence that electricity use varies substantially by task category. It is a reasonable personal rule for proportionate use.
It is not a quantified savings guarantee. The cited evidence does not establish a fixed amount of electricity per prompt, a percentage saving from shorter prompts or fewer turns, or an energy ranking of consumer AI providers. Exact individual estimates would require provider-specific measurements and a clear, comparable methodology.
That distinction is useful when deciding what action to take. A reader can make a qualitative choice—such as using text for a text-only need—without claiming to know the number of watt-hours saved. A reader cannot use the IEA’s global totals to calculate personal electricity use, nor assume that a change in prompt length, device setting, or turn count has a measured percentage effect.

Frequently asked questions
Is a simple AI text prompt energy-intensive?
The IEA’s 2026 executive summary says simple text queries typically consume less electricity than running a television over the same period. It does not provide a fixed electricity figure for every prompt or service, so the comparison should not be treated as a per-query measurement.
Should I avoid using AI video altogether?
Not necessarily. The practical distinction is whether the task needs moving images. The IEA places video generation among the task categories that can consume hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. That supports avoiding unnecessary video generation, not avoiding a feature that is genuinely needed.
Does writing a shorter prompt save electricity?
The cited sources do not establish a quantified saving from shorter prompts, fewer turns, or a particular prompt length. Write clearly enough to get a useful result, but do not treat brevity as a verified electricity-saving formula.
Can my phone or computer tell me the energy used by a cloud AI request?
No. A local meter can measure electricity used by the device it monitors, but it does not attribute electricity used by remote data centres to an individual request. The IEA figures cited here are task-category comparisons and infrastructure totals, not a method for measuring one prompt.
Can I calculate my prompt’s cost from data-centre electricity totals?
No. Figures such as 415 TWh for data centres in 2024 or the projection from 485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030 describe infrastructure at an aggregate scale. They are not per-prompt estimates and cannot be divided into an individual user’s electricity use without provider-specific measurement and a clear attribution method.
How do I compare energy claims from different AI providers?
Check whether the figures describe the same task and modality, whether reasoning or agent-like behavior is included, and whether each number is per task, per facility, or an aggregate. Then look for the measurement boundary and methodology. The IEA material cited here does not provide a standardized comparison table for consumer AI services.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI video use more energy than a text prompt?
The IEA’s 2026 comparison places video generation among task categories that can use hundreds or thousands of times more energy per query than simple text generation. It is a broad category-level comparison, not a fixed multiplier for every request or provider.

Can I tell how much electricity one AI prompt uses?
Not from the IEA figures cited here. They describe task categories and data-centre or global totals, not electricity attributed to an individual consumer prompt. A provider-specific figure would need a clear task definition, measurement boundary, and methodology.
Does writing a shorter prompt save electricity?
The cited sources do not establish a percentage saving from shorter prompts, fewer turns, or a particular device setting. Clear prompts can help specify the task, but no personal electricity reduction can be calculated from these sources.
The Bottom Line
Use the simplest AI mode that can meet the need: text for text, and more intensive reasoning, agentic workflows, or video when their capabilities are genuinely useful. The IEA finds large differences among task categories, but its infrastructure statistics and broad comparisons do not reveal the electricity used by an individual prompt or guarantee a specific personal saving.
