You generally can’t flatten an existing crease safely at home. A centre line or slight waviness can be a normal feature of a foldable display, and the manufacturer guidance cited here does not identify an at-home treatment that removes it. Avoid pressing, heating, rubbing, weighting or applying an unapproved film to the fold. You can reduce the risk of damage by keeping the display and hinge clear before closing the phone and following the care instructions for your exact model.
What you can—and cannot—do about a foldable-screen crease
A foldable screen bends along a designed fold area, so a visible centre line, shallow indentation or slight unevenness may be part of its normal appearance. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold5 guide describes a centre crease as a normal characteristic of that device. Motorola’s regional India care page for Razr says slight waviness where the display folds is normal. These examples do not establish that every crease on every foldable is harmless; they show why a crease alone is not enough to diagnose a fault.
There is an important distinction between reducing the chance of damage and making an existing crease less visible. Careful handling can help protect the flexible display, but the cited manufacturer instructions do not show that any user-applied method will remove an established crease. No independently measured figure in the cited material says how much a person can reduce one.

Is the crease normal or a sign of damage?
The most useful first question is whether the line is the expected fold feature or a sudden change accompanied by another symptom. A centre crease that has looked broadly the same since you opened the phone may be a normal characteristic, particularly on models whose care guide explicitly says so. A slight waviness or uneven surface at the bend can likewise be expected on some Razr models.
There is no single cross-brand measurement that tells an owner where a normal crease ends and a defect begins. Display construction, protective layers, hinge design and regional service policies differ. Do not compare your phone with a photograph of a different model and assume that the darker, deeper or more visible line proves damage.
Instead, note changes that are clearly new: a crease that appears suddenly, a lifted or bubbling layer, cracking, a black line, a dead touch region, flickering or another area that no longer responds. Those signs warrant an assessment, especially if the image or touch response is affected. They are not symptoms to correct by pushing the fold flat.

How to care for the screen without worsening the problem
- Check the inner display and hinge area before folding. Look for crumbs, sand, grit or anything else that could be trapped between the halves. Google warns that particles can damage a flexible screen or hinge, and Motorola also advises checking for debris before closing. Follow your own phone maker’s cleaning directions to remove anything loose; do not push particles toward or into the hinge.
- Keep objects away from the inner screen when closing. Do not fold the phone with a key, card, pen, coin, crumb or other object between the screens. Samsung warns against closing its device with objects between the screens. Even a small particle can create a pressure point when the phone is shut, so check both halves rather than looking only at the centre line.
- Leave the fold alone. Use the phone normally rather than pressing, scraping or rubbing along the crease. Keep sharp objects and fingernails away from the flexible display. If you are inspecting the line, do so under good light without running a fingernail over it or trying to push one side level with the other.
- Keep the factory-installed inner film intact. A supplied film is part of the phone maker’s specified display assembly on some models. Do not peel it off, trim it, tape it down or add another layer unless the manufacturer or an authorized service provider directs you to. If the film bubbles, lifts or becomes damaged, stop experimenting and check the instructions for that exact model.
- Use model-specific cleaning guidance. Cleaning recommendations are not universal. Motorola’s cited Razr page describes gentle wiping with a pre-moistened screen wipe or a lint-free cloth. Google gives Pixel Fold-specific handling and cleaning instructions and warns against picking at or removing its protective film. Check the current guide for your own model before cleaning the inner display, and use only the method that guide permits.
- Close the phone normally. Do not slam the two halves together or add force at the centre to make them meet. The purpose of checking for debris is to prevent an object from being trapped, not to make the fold look flatter. If the hinge does not move as it normally does, ask support for guidance rather than forcing it.
Methods that should not be treated as crease fixes
Online advice often suggests a physical or thermal trick. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish any of these as effective, and several create a direct risk to a flexible display:
- Pressing or pinching the crease: Samsung warns that excessive pressure where the screen folds can damage it.
- Using a fingernail, pen, card edge or tool: Samsung specifically warns against hard or sharp objects. Scraping can damage a surface layer even if the line initially appears unchanged.
- Heating the phone: No cited care instruction identifies heat as a way to reshape a crease. Do not use a hair dryer, heating pad or other heat source as an experiment.
- Massaging or rubbing the line: Repeated rubbing is still pressure on the flexible assembly and has no established crease-removal benefit in the cited guidance.
- Placing a book, weight or clamp on the open phone: A load can stress the display and hinge. There is no supported time or weight that makes this safe.
- Leaving the phone open for a set number of hours: Keeping it open may be convenient while you use it, but no manufacturer instruction here says that an open position removes an existing crease. Do not promise this as a treatment.
- Installing a generic inner-screen film: Protector rules differ by model, and an unapproved film may conflict with the display design or warranty instructions.
These cautions are about preventing additional damage, not about proving that every visible line is defective. If the crease has changed or a layer is lifting, document the condition and contact support instead of trying one of these methods.

Why a screen protector is not a crease fix
A protector should not be treated as a way to flatten or hide the fold. Guidance varies by phone: Google says not to remove the Pixel Fold’s pre-installed protector or apply a third-party protector; Motorola’s cited Razr instructions say not to use a protector on its internal display; and Samsung warns against films or stickers it has not approved. These directions apply to the respective devices and should not be generalized into one rule for every foldable.
A film that is not approved for the model may conflict with its display construction or care instructions. It may also introduce a new edge or bubble at the fold, but the cited guidance does not provide a universal diagnosis or repair method for that condition. If an inner-screen film is lifting or damaged, ask the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider what to do for that model. Do not press it down or remove it as a crease-reduction experiment.

The Samsung document is for the Galaxy Z Fold5, Google’s page is for Pixel Fold, and Motorola’s cited page is regional India guidance. Screen construction, protector policy and care directions can differ by model and market. If your phone is not one of these, use its current support page and warranty terms rather than assuming one of these examples applies.
A simple check before you contact support
- Record the baseline. In normal room light, note where the crease is and whether the image and touch response work across it. Avoid pressing the line while checking.
- Look for a change in the surface layer. Bubbling, lifting, cracking or a new edge at the fold is different from a stable centre line. Do not pick at the layer to see how far it lifts.
- Check function, not just appearance. Open a familiar app and gently tap across the area. A dead touch region, persistent line in the image or flicker is a reason to request service.
- Review the exact model guide. Use the phone’s support page, not a generic foldable-phone video. Confirm what it says about cleaning, the supplied film and authorized service.
- Contact the maker or an authorized provider. Describe when the change began, whether the phone was folded with debris or an object between the screens, and whether touch or display output changed. Do not claim a cause you cannot verify.
The cited manufacturer material does not provide a cross-brand diagnostic test, repair price list or guarantee that service will make a crease disappear. Ask the provider to explain inspection, warranty coverage and any repair or replacement estimate for your exact model before authorizing work. Terms can depend on the device, country and condition.
Will leaving the phone open make the crease go away?
There is no supported schedule for this. Leaving a phone unfolded can keep the display from being folded while you use it, but the cited care pages do not say that an open position reverses the fold geometry or removes a visible line. Treat it as a use preference, not a repair technique. Do not leave the phone open in a place where the inner display can collect grit or be struck by objects, and do not use the open position as a reason to skip the normal debris check before the next closure.

When to contact support instead of treating it as a normal crease
A visible fold line may be expected, but a crease is not a catch-all explanation for a new display problem. The manufacturer sources cited here do not provide one cross-brand test for distinguishing ordinary wear from a fault. Contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider for model-specific assessment if the screen changes suddenly or develops a functional or visible symptom such as a black line, a dead touch area, cracking or a lifted layer.

Can newer foldables have less-visible creases?
Manufacturers have described display changes intended to reduce crease visibility in particular generations. In a 2024 developer interview, Samsung said the Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 received a revised Protect Layer structure intended to reduce crease visibility compared with their predecessors. That is a manufacturer description of a design change, not evidence that an existing phone can be retrofitted or that the crease is eliminated. Samsung’s developer interview
On July 14, 2026, Samsung announced Flex Titanium, describing a titanium-alloy film below the OLED panel and a titanium plate beneath the display module as part of a next-generation display structure intended to reduce crease visibility. Samsung also reported that the alloy film provides 20 times greater mechanical stiffness than polymer film. That figure is a manufacturer-reported material specification, not a measurement of crease visibility and not a promise about an existing screen. If crease visibility is a priority when choosing a replacement, treat those statements as design claims tied to specific generations—not proof of a crease-free screen. Check current model and regional availability, then consult independent hands-on reviews for how a display looks under different lighting and viewing angles. Also compare the exact model’s warranty, service availability, durability information and inner-screen protector rules.

Questions to ask before buying a replacement
If the crease bothers you enough to consider another phone, compare the actual display rather than relying on a product slogan. Ask whether the manufacturer describes a revised protective layer or internal support structure, whether that claim applies to the precise model number sold in your market, and whether the inner screen arrives with a film that owners must not remove. Look at the display in bright light, dim light and at an angle, because visibility can change with viewing conditions.
Also compare practical ownership details: the published warranty and exclusions, where authorized service is available, how the maker handles a lifted or damaged factory film, and whether the support page gives model-specific cleaning instructions. A newer structure may be intended to make a crease less visible, but it does not establish that the phone is crease-free or that it will remain visually unchanged throughout ownership. Independent hands-on impressions can supplement, but not replace, the manufacturer’s care and warranty terms.
Bottom line for an existing foldable phone
Assume that a stable centre crease or slight fold waviness may be normal unless your model’s support guidance says otherwise. Protect the phone by checking for grit and objects before closing, keeping sharp items away, preserving the approved inner film and using the exact cleaning method recommended for that model. Do not press, heat, massage, weigh down, scrape or cover the crease with an unapproved protector. A sudden change, bubbling, cracking, lines or touch failure deserves manufacturer or authorized-service assessment rather than a home flattening attempt.

Will leaving my foldable phone open make the crease disappear?
