You usually cannot make a connected car invisible, but you can reduce optional location and driving-data sharing. Start in the vehicle’s privacy or data-sharing menu, then check the manufacturer’s app and account separately. Finally, use the manufacturer’s privacy-request process for access, deletion, restriction, or opt-out requests that are available in your market. Before selling or transferring the car, remove profiles and paired phones, perform the model-specific factory reset, and tell the manufacturer that ownership changed.
The exact controls depend on the make, model, model year, country, connected-service package, and software version. Disabling sharing can also stop remote-app functions, roadside assistance, navigation-related services, or other connected features, so read each warning before confirming a change.
What location data a connected car can reveal
A modern vehicle may generate location-related information through several systems at once. The navigation unit can record destinations, routes, and map searches. A telematics module can send coordinates, vehicle status, mileage, diagnostic events, and driving events to the manufacturer or a service provider. A manufacturer app can show the parked-car location and use account permissions to request vehicle data. Connected phones, roadside services, in-car Wi-Fi, and vehicle sensors can add more information.
Those flows are often controlled independently. A dashboard switch may govern vehicle-to-manufacturer data while an app account controls remote services, and a privacy portal may handle requests for historical records. Turning off location permission for a phone app does not necessarily turn off the vehicle’s own modem or every service that receives data. Check the car, the account, and the manufacturer’s privacy process as separate layers.

Location can also be inferred from information that does not look like a map coordinate. A sequence of charging events, service visits, geofences, trip timestamps, or roadside-assistance calls can reveal where a vehicle regularly goes. Whether a company collects or retains those categories depends on the service and its privacy notice. The practical goal is therefore to review every location-related category, not just a button labeled “GPS.”
Identify your car’s data connections before changing anything
Write down the make, model, model year, market, and connected services installed in the vehicle. Include emergency calling, roadside assistance, remote lock or start, theft recovery, navigation subscriptions, in-car Wi-Fi, and any third-party service that has been paired with the car. The same model name can have different menus and legal options in different countries or model years.
Find the current owner’s manual and the manufacturer’s privacy notice for your region. Search the manual for terms such as Privacy, Data Sharing, Connected Vehicle, Location, Telematics, and Reset. Save the manual’s instructions before changing settings; some vehicles show a warning only once, and a reset procedure can differ between trim levels.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Make a short inventory before you switch anything off. Note which phone is the primary account, which people have shared access, whether a digital key is active, and which subscriptions you actually use. This gives you a baseline if a feature stops working and helps distinguish a privacy setting from an expired subscription or a network problem.
Turn off optional sharing in the dashboard
Find the privacy menu
- Park safely and open the vehicle’s settings screen.
- Look under Settings, Privacy, Data Sharing, Connectivity, or a similarly named menu.
- Read every category rather than assuming one master switch controls everything. Look for separate choices for vehicle data, vehicle location, driving behavior, diagnostics, and personalized services.
- Disable the optional categories you do not want to share, then read the confirmation warning and record which features the vehicle says will change.
- Repeat the review after a software update, service visit, or subscription change because menu labels and available options can change.
Ford example: separate controls
Ford’s 2026 owner manual illustrates why a category-by-category review matters. Its path is Settings → Privacy and Data Sharing, where the manual lists separate controls for Share vehicle data, Share vehicle location, and Share driving data. Availability depends on the vehicle, so these labels are an example rather than a universal menu path.
The same manual warns that changing connectivity settings can make some functions stop working or operate incorrectly. It also notes that some driver-assistance features use map data. If a warning says a safety, navigation, assistance, or subscription feature depends on connectivity, decide whether reducing that data flow is worth losing the feature before you confirm.
Do not assume that a setting called “location” covers navigation history stored locally in the head unit. If the manual offers separate controls for destinations, personal data, or user profiles, review those as well. Some controls may stop future transmission without deleting information already stored in the vehicle or account.
Review the manufacturer app and online account
Open the official app and web account associated with the vehicle after changing dashboard settings. Look for connected-services management, vehicle sharing, authorized users, location history, remote commands, and data-sharing preferences.

- Remove people who no longer need access to the vehicle.
- Revoke invitations or shared-vehicle permissions that you do not recognize.
- Cancel or disable optional connected services that require location or driving data.
- Review app privacy permissions, but do not treat a phone-level location switch as a substitute for disabling the vehicle’s own data connection.
- Check whether the account stores trip history, destination history, geofences, or a parked-car location and use the available delete controls.
- Review any third-party integrations, such as fleet, insurance, navigation, or smart-home services, and disconnect those you no longer use.
Some remote functions may stop when sharing is restricted. Reports describe possible effects on roadside assistance and remote app functions. Your vehicle’s warning message and service terms are the authority for the specific feature, not a generic expectation about all cars.
App-level controls can also be narrower than account-level controls. A phone may stop displaying the vehicle’s location while the vehicle remains enrolled in a connected-service plan. Conversely, removing the vehicle from an account may disable remote commands but leave emergency connectivity active. Check the status of both the account and the car’s dashboard after every change.
Use the manufacturer’s privacy-request process
Dashboard controls generally affect future collection or sharing. They may not erase records already held by the manufacturer or its service providers. Look in the privacy notice, account settings, or a regional privacy portal for a process to request a copy of your data, deletion, restriction, or an opt-out where the applicable law and company process provide one.
What to include in a request
- Identify yourself using the account details or verification method the manufacturer requires.
- Identify the vehicle by the information requested in the portal, such as the account-linked vehicle or vehicle identification number.
- Specify whether you want access, deletion, restriction, or an opt-out; do not assume one request performs all four actions.
- Ask which categories are covered, including precise location, driving behavior, vehicle diagnostics, trip history, and data shared with service providers.
- Save the confirmation, date, and scope of the request. A deletion request can have legal, safety, warranty, fraud-prevention, or emergency exceptions.
Availability and response requirements vary by jurisdiction. If a portal offers a choice to disable precise location, read whether the setting applies to the vehicle, the account, or a particular service. If it applies only to supported vehicles, confirm that your model is included.
Keep copies of submitted forms and the company’s response. If the portal separates requests by vehicle, account, or service, submit the request for each relevant record. A deletion confirmation may cover only the manufacturer’s systems and not an independent roadside, insurance, or navigation provider, so check those providers’ notices separately.
Compare the privacy choices before you commit
When a vehicle offers several switches, compare them on five questions: Can precise location be disabled? Are location, driving, and general vehicle-data settings separate? Which services stop when sharing is disabled? Does the manufacturer offer access, deletion, and opt-out processes? Does the setting apply to the dashboard, the app account, or both?
| Choice to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle-location control | Whether it disables precise coordinates, a location history, or only one connected service. | A “location” label may not cover navigation records or another service using the telematics connection. |
| Driving-data control | Whether behavior, mileage, events, or usage-based data are separate categories. | You may be able to keep necessary connectivity while declining optional driving analytics. |
| General vehicle-data control | Whether diagnostics, status, and service data are included. | Turning it off can affect support, maintenance alerts, or remote troubleshooting. |
| Account-level service control | Whether the app, shared users, and subscriptions remain linked. | Dashboard privacy and account access are different layers; both need review. |
| Privacy-request process | Whether access, deletion, restriction, and opt-out are offered separately. | A setting change may not remove historical records already held by the company. |
Understand the trade-offs before disabling connectivity
Reducing data sharing is not the same as removing every connected capability. A vehicle may need a network connection for emergency assistance, remote commands, live traffic, theft recovery, navigation updates, or a service technician’s diagnostic session. The manufacturer may also use map data for certain driver-assistance functions.

| Privacy choice | Potential benefit | Possible effect to check |
|---|---|---|
| Turn off vehicle-location sharing | Reduces optional transmission of the car’s precise location to the manufacturer or connected service. | Parked-car location, geofencing, theft-recovery, navigation, or location-based app functions may change. |
| Turn off driving-data sharing | Limits optional sharing of driving events or behavior categories. | Usage-based services, coaching, diagnostics, or features that depend on driving data may stop or work differently. |
| Disable broader vehicle-data sharing | Reduces transmission of general vehicle and diagnostic information. | Remote support, roadside assistance, service alerts, or other connected functions may be impaired. |
| Disable or cancel connected services in the account | Removes an account-level path for remote access and related data collection. | Remote lock, start, status checks, subscriptions, or app controls may no longer work. |
These effects are not identical across makes or markets. Keep a written note of the features you rely on, especially emergency or roadside functions, before changing a setting.
There is no universal “privacy mode” that guarantees zero transmission. Emergency communications and other legally or contractually permitted exceptions may continue, and a vehicle can still process information locally. The safest approach is to read the exact warning, retain only the services you need, and verify the result afterward.
What a recent U.S. enforcement order means
In January 2026, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced a final order involving General Motors and OnStar. The order requires affirmative express consent before most collection, use, or sharing of connected-vehicle data, subject to exceptions that include emergency first responders. It also requires a consumer process to request data copies and deletion, a way to disable precise-geolocation collection where the vehicle supports it, and an opt-out for geolocation and driver-behavior data with limited exceptions.
The order places a five-year restriction on disclosure of covered data to consumer reporting agencies and includes obligations lasting 20 years. This is a specific U.S. order concerning General Motors and OnStar. It is not a universal rule for every automaker, every vehicle, or every country; use your own manufacturer’s notice and the law in your jurisdiction to determine what process is available.
Prepare the vehicle before sale or transfer
Location records and account access can remain associated with a car after it changes hands unless you remove them deliberately. Perform these steps while you still have access to the vehicle and its account:
- Delete driver profiles, saved destinations, navigation history, garage-door entries, and other personal records shown in the vehicle.
- Remove every paired phone, Bluetooth device, digital key, Wi-Fi credential, and user profile.
- Use the exact factory-reset procedure in the owner’s manual. A simple deletion of one phone is not a substitute for the model-specific reset.
- Remove the vehicle from your manufacturer account and revoke shared-user access in the app.
- Notify the manufacturer that ownership changed, following its transfer or account-support process.
- Confirm with the buyer or dealer which connected services, subscriptions, and emergency features will be activated for the next owner.
Do not rely on a factory reset alone if the manufacturer account still lists the vehicle. Account removal and vehicle reset address different layers of stored information. If you trade the car in, complete the account removal yourself rather than assuming the dealer’s intake process will do it.
Check whether the change worked
After saving settings, reopen the privacy menu and verify the selected state. Check the app and web account separately; a dashboard change should not be assumed to have changed account permissions. Review the privacy notice for the service name attached to each setting and note any exceptions, such as emergency communications or legally required retention.

A VIN-based privacy report, such as the type described by the Associated Press, can summarize a manufacturer’s stated data practices. Treat such a report as a lead rather than proof that it measured every transmission from your particular vehicle. Compare its findings with the current owner’s manual, privacy notice, dashboard settings, and account controls.

Troubleshoot common surprises
The car still appears on the app
Check whether you disabled only location sharing while leaving the vehicle linked to the account. Remove the vehicle or connected service from the account if you no longer want remote access, then verify that shared users were removed. Some account changes require verification or support assistance.
Remote features stopped working
Review the warning shown when you changed connectivity settings. Remote commands, status checks, roadside assistance, and other services may depend on the connection you disabled. Re-enable only the specific category needed, if the vehicle permits separate controls, rather than restoring every sharing option automatically.
A phone permission change made no difference
Phone permissions govern the phone app’s access to the phone’s location. They do not necessarily disable the vehicle’s telematics modem or data sent directly from the car. Recheck the dashboard privacy menu and the manufacturer account.

Availability can depend on model year, trim, market, software, subscription, and connected-service configuration. Consult the correct regional manual and ask the manufacturer which controls apply to your vehicle. Do not infer that an absent switch means no location data is collected.
A deletion request was only partly completed
Read the response for the categories and exceptions covered. Safety, emergency, legal, warranty, fraud-prevention, or service records may be retained under the applicable process. Submit a separate access, restriction, or opt-out request if the portal treats those as different actions.
A practical privacy checklist
- Record the vehicle make, model, model year, market, software version, and connected services.
- Read the current owner’s manual and regional privacy notice.
- Open the dashboard’s Privacy or Data Sharing menu.
- Review vehicle data, vehicle location, driving data, diagnostics, and personalized-service choices separately.
- Read and save each warning before disabling a setting.
- Review the manufacturer app, account users, vehicle sharing, connected services, and stored trip information.
- Use the manufacturer privacy portal for access, deletion, restriction, or opt-out requests that apply to you.
- Recheck settings after updates, service visits, or subscription changes.
- Before transfer, delete profiles and paired devices, factory-reset the car, remove it from your account, and notify the manufacturer.
Bottom line
The most effective sequence is layered: turn off optional sharing in the vehicle, review the manufacturer app and account, use the available privacy-request process, and reset both the car and account before ownership changes. Because every make, model year, market, and service package differs, keep the features you need only after reading the specific warning about what data and connectivity that feature requires.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop my car from tracking my location?
Open the vehicle’s Privacy or Data Sharing menu and disable optional vehicle-location sharing. Then review the manufacturer app, account permissions, and connected services separately. Use the maker’s privacy portal for deletion, restriction, or opt-out requests where available. Emergency or other permitted communications may still operate.
Does turning off my phone’s location permission stop the car modem?
No. A phone permission controls the app’s access to the phone’s location. It does not necessarily disable the vehicle’s telematics modem or data sent directly from the car. Change the dashboard setting and account permissions too.

Will disabling connected services disable roadside assistance?
It may. Manufacturers warn that connectivity changes can impair roadside assistance, remote commands, navigation, diagnostics, or other features. Read the warning for your exact vehicle before confirming and keep a record of what changes.
Can I delete location data the manufacturer already has?
Look for the manufacturer’s access, deletion, restriction, and opt-out process. These are often separate requests, and legal, safety, emergency, warranty, fraud-prevention, or service-record exceptions may apply.
Are Ford’s privacy-menu labels universal?
No. Ford’s 2026 manual shows Settings → Privacy and Data Sharing with separate vehicle-data, vehicle-location, and driving-data controls, but availability depends on the vehicle. Other makes, model years, markets, and software versions can use different menus.

Does a factory reset remove the car from my manufacturer account?
Not necessarily. The vehicle reset and account removal address different layers. Complete both steps and confirm that the car no longer appears in the app or web account.
Is a VIN privacy report proof that my car sends no location data?
No. A VIN-based report can summarize stated manufacturer practices, but it does not establish that every transmission from a particular vehicle was measured. Verify it against the current manual, privacy notice, dashboard settings, and account controls.
The Bottom Line
Reduce exposure in layers: disable optional location and data sharing in the dashboard, review the manufacturer app and account, submit available privacy requests, and factory-reset plus unlink the car before transfer. Always check the vehicle-specific warning because privacy changes can disable convenience, assistance, or navigation features.
