If you want to reduce your intake of the sweetener discussed in recent DNA-damage headlines, look for sucralose on ingredient lists and choose a comparable product that does not contain it. You do not need a testing device, supplement, or special diet plan. The important qualification is that the widely cited 2023 finding involved sucralose-6-acetate in laboratory assays. It did not show that ordinary dietary sucralose consumption damages human DNA. In 2026, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) concluded that sucralose, when used as the authorized food additive E 955, does not raise a genotoxicity concern. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to describe sucralose as approved for food use in the United States.
What the headline means—and what it does not
The sweetener at the center of the discussion is sucralose, an intense sweetener used in many reduced-sugar foods and drinks. The headline is based on a 2023 laboratory study that tested both sucralose and a compound called sucralose-6-acetate. The strongest reported signal concerned sucralose-6-acetate, not a clinical observation in people eating ordinary products.
In the study by Schiffman and colleagues, a MultiFlow assay and a micronucleus test indicated genotoxicity for sucralose-6-acetate. The MultiFlow result classified the mechanism as clastogenic, meaning the assay pattern was consistent with chromosome damage. The corresponding author, Susan Schiffman, was quoted in the study release as saying, “Our new work establishes that sucralose-6-acetate is genotoxic.” That statement describes the laboratory finding. It is not evidence that routine dietary sucralose intake has been proven to damage DNA in humans.

It is also important to keep the two names separate. Sucralose is the food additive listed on a package. Sucralose-6-acetate was the compound that produced the prominent signal in the 2023 assays. A headline that shortens both names to “sucralose damages DNA” leaves out the laboratory setting, the specific compound, and the difference between a hazard signal and demonstrated human risk.
EFSA’s 2026 re-evaluation considered older and newer evidence. It described some positive in-vitro DNA-damage findings as limited in relevance and noted negative results in relevant bacterial mutation and micronucleus assays, as well as in-vivo mutagenicity endpoints. EFSA concluded that sucralose does not raise a genotoxicity concern when used as food additive E 955. That is a regulatory conclusion for authorized food-additive use, not a claim that every conceivable exposure is risk-free.
FDA’s U.S. food-additive information says sucralose is approved for use in foods including baked goods, beverages, chewing gum, gelatins, and frozen dairy desserts. FDA says it reviewed more than 110 studies designed to identify possible toxic effects. That number describes the agency’s stated evaluation; it should not be read as proof that every later publication was part of that historical review.
What the evidence actually shows
| Evidence or assessment | What was examined | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Schiffman and colleagues, 2023 | Sucralose-6-acetate and sucralose in in-vitro screening assays | MultiFlow and micronucleus assays indicated genotoxicity for sucralose-6-acetate; the MultiFlow result received a clastogenic mechanism classification | A laboratory signal that does not establish DNA damage in people consuming ordinary dietary sucralose |
| EFSA re-evaluation, 2026 | Older and newer evidence for sucralose used as authorized food additive E 955 | No concern for sucralose genotoxicity at authorized food-additive use | A regulator’s conclusion within the stated use and evidence scope |
| FDA food-additive information | U.S. food use and toxicology review | Sucralose is described as approved for food use; FDA says it reviewed more than 110 studies | The agency’s stated U.S. regulatory position and historical review |
The practical implication is balanced: reducing sucralose is a reasonable personal choice if you prefer to limit it, but the 2023 result should not be presented as proof that ordinary intake causes DNA damage. The available regulatory conclusion from EFSA points in the opposite direction for authorized use.
Where sucralose can appear
The fastest way to find sucralose is to read the ingredient list. FDA identifies several categories in which it may be used:
- Baked goods
- Beverages
- Chewing gum
- Gelatins
- Frozen dairy desserts
“Sugar-free” and “diet” labels are useful places to start, but they are not complete search terms. A product can be marketed with other claims and still contain sucralose, so check the actual ingredients rather than relying on the front of the package.
Look for the word sucralose in the ingredient panel. If it is present, the product contains the sweetener. If it is absent, that specific ingredient is not listed. Ingredient lists are the direct consumer tool; no scanner, home test, supplement, or tracking device is required.

Check more than one format of a familiar food. A regular flavor, seasonal flavor, multipack, and single-serve version can have different formulations. The same is true when a manufacturer changes a recipe or when you buy an imported product. The package in your hand, rather than a remembered ingredient list, is the relevant one.

A step-by-step way to reduce your intake
- Choose the products that matter most to you. Start with items you consume frequently, such as a daily drink, repeated snack, or routinely purchased dessert. Changing a few high-frequency choices usually has more practical effect than searching every occasional food at once.
- Read the entire ingredient list. Do not stop at “sugar-free,” “diet,” “light,” or calorie information. Find the ingredient panel and search for the exact word “sucralose.”
- Compare like with like. Place the usual product beside similar options and check which ingredient lists contain sucralose. Compare serving size, taste, storage, and how well the alternative fits your routine; the goal is a workable substitution, not a theoretical one.
- Try an unsweetened version where it is acceptable. For drinks, water or an unsweetened version is a straightforward option. For foods, choose a comparable product whose ingredient list does not include sucralose if the taste and texture work for you.
- Change one category at a time. Replace a regular beverage or snack first, then reassess. This makes it easier to identify which swaps are sustainable and avoids assuming that every “free-from” product will suit you.
- Recheck labels when you switch products. Formulas can differ between brands, flavors, package sizes, and regions. Treat each new product as a fresh ingredient-list check.
- Stop at the level of reduction you want. If your aim is simply to lower exposure, you do not have to eliminate every product immediately. A gradual reduction is a valid consumer choice.
For a household, it can help to identify the products that are shared most often and agree on one or two replacements. That keeps the task focused on repeat exposures rather than turning every grocery trip into a search exercise. If a replacement is rejected because of taste, texture, convenience, or price, try another comparable option or keep the original product and focus on a different category.
How to compare alternatives without overclaiming safety
The evidence summarized here does not establish that another non-sugar sweetener is universally safer or medically preferable. Switching away from sucralose can reduce your sucralose intake, but it is not proof that the replacement has a better health profile in every circumstance.
Use a practical comparison instead of a safety ranking:

- Acceptability: Will you actually use it, or will the change lead you back to the original product?
- Overall formulation: Does the replacement add other ingredients you are trying to limit?
- Cost and availability: Does the alternative fit your normal shopping budget and remain easy to find?
An unsweetened product or water may be the simplest choice for a beverage. For packaged foods, a similar product without sucralose can work if its taste, texture, and price fit your needs. No particular substitute is required by the evidence described above.
What the acceptable daily intake numbers mean
A 2023 Nature paper reported the then-established acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) as 15 milligrams per kilogram of body weight for EFSA and 5 milligrams per kilogram for FDA. Those figures were regulatory values cited in that paper, not targets for consumption. Regulatory assessments can change, so they should be checked against current agency material before being used as current numbers.
An ADI is not a recommendation to consume that amount, a personal “safe allowance” you need to reach, or a threshold at which harm suddenly begins. It is a risk-management value set by a regulator for a defined substance and use pattern. People who are pregnant, managing a medical condition, or following a clinician-directed diet should discuss individual questions with their healthcare professional rather than calculating an ADI as a personal goal.
Do not try to estimate your intake by multiplying the ADI by your body weight and then treating the result as a daily allowance. Product concentrations, serving sizes, and eating patterns vary, and the figures above were reported in a 2023 paper rather than presented here as current agency limits. If you need an individualized assessment, a clinician or registered dietitian can review the actual products you use.

Common mistakes when trying to avoid sucralose
Assuming “sugar-free” always means sucralose-free
“Sugar-free” describes the product’s sugar claim, not a guaranteed ingredient profile. Some sugar-free products use sucralose, while others use different sweeteners or no intense sweetener. Read the list every time.

Checking only drinks
Beverages are a visible source, but FDA also lists baked goods, chewing gum, gelatins, and frozen dairy desserts. If you are trying to reduce intake, check the categories you eat repeatedly rather than focusing on one aisle.
Treating a laboratory result as a human diagnosis
The 2023 assays tested sucralose-6-acetate and sucralose under laboratory conditions. They did not measure DNA damage in people after ordinary dietary consumption. Presenting the result as a proven human effect goes beyond the study.
Assuming every replacement is safer
The evidence here does not compare all alternative sweeteners well enough to produce a universal safety ranking. Choose based on your own preferences and dietary needs rather than a blanket claim.

There is no need for a special device or supplement to identify or remove sucralose. Ingredient-list reading and ordinary product choices are the direct steps supported by this guidance.
Using an old regulatory number as a personal limit
The ADI figures cited in the 2023 paper may not represent the latest agency presentation, and an ADI is not a goal. Avoid turning either number into a daily target or a promise of individual protection.
Assuming a brand name answers the ingredient question
People often ask whether a familiar branded sweetener is linked to the headline. Brand names can cover different products and formulations. Check the ingredient panel for the word “sucralose” rather than relying on the brand name alone.
A practical label-reading routine
Use this short routine whenever you buy a packaged product:
- Find the ingredient panel, usually near the nutrition information.
- Scan for “sucralose.”
- If it appears, decide whether an unsweetened or sucralose-free comparable product is acceptable.
- If it does not appear, check the serving pattern and the rest of the formulation before deciding whether it fits your needs.
- Repeat the check for a new flavor, size, or reformulated package.
Keeping a simple note of the products you replace can help you avoid accidental reintroduction, but tracking is optional. The key action is the label check itself.

When shopping online, open the product’s current ingredient image or manufacturer listing instead of trusting a search-result description. At home, place the replacement next to the old product and compare labels before discarding packaging. These habits reduce mistakes without requiring a paid app or specialized equipment.
How much reduction is reasonable?
There is no single evidence-based reduction target in the information summarized here. Your goal might be to remove sucralose from one daily drink, reduce the number of products that contain it, or avoid it entirely. Set the target that matches your reason for changing and your ability to maintain the substitutions.
If you consume a product occasionally, replacing it may make little practical difference compared with changing a product you use several times a day. Conversely, if a particular alternative is unpleasant or conflicts with a medically prescribed diet, forcing the swap may not be worthwhile. A sustainable choice is more useful than an all-or-nothing rule.
Reducing one item does not require declaring every other food unsafe. The aim is to make an informed ingredient choice while keeping the rest of your eating pattern workable. If you later decide to reduce more, repeat the same label-checking process with the next frequently used category.

What is sucralose-6-acetate?
It is the compound tested alongside sucralose in the 2023 Schiffman study. MultiFlow and micronucleus assays indicated genotoxicity for that compound. Those results came from laboratory screening and do not establish the same effect in people consuming ordinary dietary amounts of sucralose.
Does EFSA say sucralose is dangerous?
EFSA’s 2026 re-evaluation concluded that sucralose, when used as authorized food additive E 955, does not raise a genotoxicity concern. That conclusion applies to the stated food-additive use and evidence scope.
Do I need a test kit or supplement to remove sucralose?
No. Reading ingredient lists and choosing products without sucralose are the direct steps. A special device, supplement, or detox product is not needed.
