To reduce stuttering, first identify when it happens, then compare the same scene or route after changing one thing at a time. A high average FPS does not rule out brief hitches: average frame rate describes overall throughput, while stuttering is about uneven delivery. Driver updates, shader compilation, background work, graphics settings, and heat can all contribute, so there is no single graphics preset or hardware purchase that fixes every PC.
Start by identifying the pattern
Before changing settings, work out whether the problem is a brief hitch, consistently low frame rate, or performance that declines during a longer session. Note whether it happens in one game or several, after a driver or game update, when entering an area for the first time, during combat, or only after the PC has been playing for a while.
For a useful comparison, repeat the same route or scene under similar conditions. Record the game version, operating system, graphics driver, CPU and GPU, memory, resolution, and whether the game is running on a laptop or a system with switchable graphics. Intel recommends documenting reproducible symptoms and checking game or OEM reports and updates when troubleshooting common game issues (Intel Support).

- Low frame rate that persists: check configuration and test graphics settings against the same scene.
- Performance that worsens over time: check temperatures, clocks, cooling, and power behavior.
- One game affected: look for game-specific updates, known issues, and developer guidance.
- Several games affected: use monitoring and configuration checks to narrow down a system-wide limit.
Why stuttering can follow a driver update
Games may need to compile shaders the first time they are used, or after a change that invalidates previously compiled data. Just-in-time shader compilation can cause in-game stutter, as Microsoft explains in its Advanced Shader Delivery overview. Intel says Arc players should allow shader processing to finish after installing a graphics driver; its guidance is to let shaders reach 100% completion before fully starting the game (Intel Support, reviewed May 13, 2026).

This is a plausible explanation, not a diagnosis for every hitch. NVIDIA’s Control Panel Help says a driver installation deletes the shader cache and that players may experience gameplay stutters the first time they run a game afterward. It also warns that an undersized shader-cache limit can evict useful shaders (NVIDIA Manage 3D Settings reference). Repeatedly clearing the cache is therefore not a routine fix: it removes data intended to be reused.
Give shader work time before measuring
If the game has just been patched or the graphics driver has changed, play long enough for any shader work to finish before deciding that a change helped or hurt. On titles covered by AMD’s Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 background-shader advisory, AMD recommends approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before capturing performance and excluding the first benchmark run of a new session. That guidance applies to the affected titles described in AMD’s advisory, not every game or graphics card (AMD support advisory).

Rule out configuration and background work
Check basic setup before buying parts or making several changes at once. Install the current game update and a graphics driver appropriate for the PC; for laptops, follow the computer maker’s guidance where applicable. On a hybrid-graphics laptop, confirm the game is using the intended high-performance GPU and that the system is on an appropriate power setting while gaming.

As a reversible test, turn off background game capture and close nonessential CPU-heavy utilities, then replay the same scene. Intel lists background recording and power-plan checks among its game troubleshooting steps, while AMD notes that other processes can use CPU resources. Change one item at a time so the comparison shows what mattered.

Reduce demanding graphics settings in controlled steps
Use the game’s graphics menu to lower one demanding setting or reduce resolution by a small step, then repeat the same scene. The settings that matter most vary by game, hardware, and resolution, so a vendor preset is not a universal answer. If a setting makes no meaningful difference to the problem, restore it rather than sacrificing image quality unnecessarily. Consult the game’s developer guidance for title-specific recommendations where available.
AMD Software supports per-application profiles and graphics controls, and NVIDIA documents per-program settings and a maximum frame-rate control. These are options to test, not guarantees of a particular result (AMD graphics settings guide, updated March 3, 2025; NVIDIA reference).

When to try a frame-rate cap
If the frame rate fluctuates sharply, test an in-game or driver frame-rate cap and compare how the same scene feels on your display. Keep the cap only if delivery feels steadier; there is no one ideal cap established for every display, game, or PC. Avoid changing the cap and several graphics options together, or you will not know which change affected the result.

Check for heat or power-related slowdowns
If a game starts smoothly and slows after sustained play, monitor CPU and GPU temperatures and clocks during the slowdown. Compare readings with the published operating limits for the exact components, and inspect fans, case airflow, and cooler installation. AMD notes that temperature, power, cooling, and workload can affect CPU performance and recommends checking cooler fit and airflow when investigating temperature problems (AMD troubleshooting guidance).

A generic temperature number alone does not prove throttling. Limits differ by processor and graphics card, so use the specifications for the installed model and look for a repeatable relationship between rising temperature, falling clocks, and declining performance.
Decide whether the next step is game-specific support or hardware diagnosis
If only one game remains affected after configuration and settings checks, consult its current support page and patch notes. Drivers and game updates can include title-specific fixes or known issues; Intel also advises checking developer and OEM reports when troubleshooting graphics problems (Intel Support).
If multiple games show sustained low performance, use monitoring to establish whether the CPU, GPU, memory, storage, temperature, or power behavior is limiting performance before considering a purchase. A new GPU, cooling component, SSD, or RAM may be relevant in different diagnosed cases, but no component can be recommended from the game title alone. Any hardware choice should match the exact PC, measured bottleneck, power and cooling requirements, and the affected game’s workload.
