If your PS5 character moves while the stick is untouched, or your camera slowly pans on its own, first determine whether the cause is a game setting, dirt, a temporary software fault, or a worn joystick. Restart and reset the controller, install available updates, and test more than one game before changing a dead zone or opening the controller. A larger dead zone can hide minor center movement, but it cannot repair a worn stick and makes fine inputs less responsive.
This guide applies to both the standard DualSense and DualSense Edge, but their controls and repair options differ. Edge profiles include system-level stick sensitivity and dead-zone controls, while the standard DualSense does not have a documented universal PS5 dead-zone menu. The standard controller’s joystick is soldered to the circuit board; Edge uses a separately replaceable stick module.
What stick drift and a dead zone mean
An analog stick reports a position on two axes. When the stick is centered, the controller should report values close to the center point. Stick drift is unwanted input while the stick is resting: a character walks, a camera turns, a menu selection moves, or an aim reticle creeps without an intentional command. Drift can affect the left stick, the right stick, or both, and it may be constant or intermittent.
A dead zone is the area around the center that software ignores. A small dead zone filters tiny electrical variations; a larger one ignores more off-center movement. Dead-zone adjustment is therefore a response setting, not a mechanical repair. It can suppress mild drift while sacrificing precision near the center. For example, a game may stop reacting to a barely off-center stick, but a slow, deliberate camera adjustment may also require more physical movement.

Drift can be caused by an incorrect game setting, debris around the stick, grime inside the sensing mechanism, or wear to the joystick’s resistive track. The correct remedy depends on which of those is happening. A setting problem generally follows one title or profile; a controller fault usually follows the same stick into several games and sometimes appears in menus.
Confirm the symptom before changing anything
Check whether it is game-specific
Launch a second game that uses the same stick. If the problem appears in only one title, inspect that game’s controller, aim, camera, or dead-zone settings before assuming the DualSense is defective. Also note whether the left stick, right stick, or both are affected and whether the unwanted movement occurs in menus as well as gameplay.
Write down the exact behavior before adjusting anything: which direction the character or camera moves, whether it starts immediately or after play, and whether releasing the stick stops it. This gives you a useful comparison after each change. Make one change at a time so you know whether a restart, update, setting, or cleaning step made a difference.
Observe the controller at rest
If you have access to a compatible computer or browser-based controller tester, leave the stick untouched and observe whether it reports movement. This is a diagnostic observation, not an official PlayStation calibration procedure. A tester can help separate a game-specific configuration from an input that is already being reported by the controller. Test with the stick centered naturally; do not hold it against an edge or press the dome while checking.
A tester is also useful for comparing the two sticks and for seeing whether the reading jumps around or stays at a stable offset. It does not repair, calibrate, or certify the controller, and a browser result should not be treated as a substitute for PlayStation service instructions.
Look for intermittent behavior
Drift that changes when you press, rotate, or release the stick can point to contamination or a worn component. A steady, repeatable offset may be easier to mask with a dead zone, while a rapidly changing signal is less likely to be solved by a setting alone. If the symptom disappears when the stick is moved and returns when it is released, record that pattern rather than repeatedly forcing the stick, which can add stress without identifying the cause.
Follow the reversible software checks first
1. Restart the PS5
Save your game, turn the console off completely, wait for it to finish shutting down, and start it again. Test the controller before changing other settings. A restart removes a temporary software state without altering the controller. Test the same title and one other title after the console comes back up.
2. Reset the DualSense
Use the small reset button on the rear of the controller when the symptom remains:

- Turn off the PS5.
- Find the small reset opening on the back of the DualSense.
- Press the button inside with a pin or another similar tool.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button and test the stick.
PlayStation’s support instructions describe this as a controller reset that does not reconfigure the controller or change its pairing settings. The USB reconnection is part of the prescribed sequence. Do not substitute a random button combination for the rear reset button; the physical reset is the relevant procedure.
Resetting is worth trying even when drift seems mechanical because it is quick and reversible. It cannot replace a worn joystick, however, so persistent movement after the reset needs the next diagnostic steps rather than repeated resets.
3. Install available controller software updates
On the PS5, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) and use the available controller-software update option. Also install any pending PS5 system update. Test again after the update has completed. Updating is worth doing before hardware work because it is reversible and can remove software-related behavior.

Keep the controller connected as directed by the console while an update runs, and do not judge the result until the process finishes. If the same stick still reports movement in several games afterward, software is less likely to be the only cause.
Use the right dead-zone control for your controller
DualSense Edge
DualSense Edge custom profiles include Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone controls. Open the profile you use for the affected game, increase the dead zone gradually, and stop as soon as the unwanted center movement disappears. Make the smallest change that works: every increase discards more small, deliberate movement and can make slow camera adjustments or careful aiming feel less responsive.
Check the profile that is actually active for the game. Changing a different profile will not alter the controls you feel during play. After changing the value, test walking, aiming, and menu navigation, not just whether the original drift stopped. A setting that removes a menu movement but makes aiming unusable is too large.
Dead-zone adjustment is useful when the stick has a small, stable center offset and you need a practical workaround. It does not restore a worn resistive track, and drift may worsen until the setting no longer hides it. If the Edge module is failing, a replacement module is the hardware solution rather than an indefinitely increasing dead zone.

Do not assume that the standard DualSense has a universal PS5 system menu for stick dead-zone calibration. The documented system-level stick sensitivity and dead-zone controls apply to DualSense Edge profiles. For a standard DualSense, look in the affected game’s controller or accessibility settings for a dead-zone option. If the game has no such control, the console does not provide a documented universal replacement setting for it.

Game settings can use different names, such as inner dead zone, stick dead zone, aim dead zone, or center dead zone. Adjust the control for the specific stick that drifts, and change it in small increments. If only one game offers the setting, the workaround applies there and does not alter the controller’s underlying signal for other games.
Clean the stick without making the problem worse
External cleaning
Surface debris can interfere with the stick’s movement. Turn the controller off and disconnect it. Remove visible dust or grime around the stick dome and its circular opening. A cotton swab lightly dampened with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol can be used around the stick, following the cleaning approach described by iFixit. Use only a small amount and keep liquid from running into the controller.
- Do not flood the opening or spray liquid directly into the controller.
- Do not force the stick against its stops while cleaning.
- Allow the alcohol to evaporate fully before reconnecting or powering the controller.
- Test the same game and a second game after cleaning.
External cleaning is most plausible when the drift began after visible dirt, a spill residue, or heavy use. It will not reverse a worn sensing track. If the controller has been exposed to a liquid spill, do not assume that more liquid cleaner will remove the problem; service may be safer than continued experimentation.

Internal cleaning: only for the right model and skill level
iFixit’s DualSense V2 guide describes opening the controller and cleaning inside potentiometer slots for drift attributed to grime or grease. That is a model-specific procedure, not a universal instruction for every DualSense revision. Opening the controller introduces small parts, connectors, and the possibility of damaging the shell or electronics. If you cannot identify your controller revision and safely work on delicate electronics, stop at external cleaning and use a qualified repair route.
Internal cleaning should be considered only after the reversible checks and only when the symptom fits contamination. It is not a guaranteed fix for a worn resistive track. Do not buy a replacement part or follow an internal guide solely because two controllers look similar; revision-specific instructions and parts matter.
Recognize when the joystick is worn
Each stick uses sensing components that can wear. iFixit describes wear to the resistive track as a source of erroneous readings; once the track or related joystick component is worn, cleaning and dead-zone changes cannot restore the original electrical surface. Persistent drift after a reset, update, appropriate game settings, and careful cleaning makes a hardware fault more plausible.
There is no reliable universal percentage for how often DualSense drift occurs or a guaranteed lifespan to use as a benchmark. Treat the behavior of your controller as the evidence: if it reports movement at rest across games and survives the reversible checks, plan for repair or replacement of the relevant part. A controller that works normally in one title but not another still needs a settings diagnosis before hardware replacement.
Choose a repair path
Repair a standard DualSense joystick
Replacing the joystick in a standard DualSense requires desoldering the existing component and soldering a replacement. This is board-level work, not a simple plug-in swap. A replacement joystick and suitable repair tools are appropriate only after you have chosen a DIY repair and can match the part to your controller revision. A part intended for one revision or controller family should not be assumed compatible with every DualSense.

If you do not already have the soldering equipment and experience to remove through-hole components without lifting pads or damaging the board, a qualified repair provider is usually the safer choice. A failed DIY attempt can turn a replaceable joystick into a larger electronics repair. Before ordering, confirm that the joystick, tools, and instructions are intended for your exact controller; the general appearance of a replacement is not proof of compatibility.
DIY can make sense for someone who already performs board-level repairs and accepts the risk. For everyone else, compare the cost and turnaround of professional service with a replacement controller, taking warranty status into account. No single price applies across regions or controller revisions, so obtain a current quote rather than relying on an online estimate.
Replace a DualSense Edge stick module
DualSense Edge uses a separately sold, replaceable stick module. PlayStation’s Edge documentation describes removing the module and installing a replacement module made for the Edge. This module is not a standard DualSense replacement part. Confirm that the part is specifically for DualSense Edge before ordering or attempting installation.

Follow the Edge instructions for releasing and securing the module, and do not force a part that does not fit. The Edge controller itself may appeal to buyers who value adjustable dead zones and replaceable modules, but purchasing an Edge is not necessary to solve every standard-DualSense drift problem.
After replacing an Edge module, select the appropriate custom profile and check its Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone setting again. A setting that was compensating for the old module may be unnecessarily large with the replacement.
Use PlayStation Repairs or a qualified provider
Use the official PlayStation Repairs route when the controller is still covered by a warranty or service program, when the fault remains unresolved, or when soldering is outside your experience. Service availability, eligibility, and any charge depend on your region and circumstances, so check the current support page for your location. A reputable independent repair provider is another option when you want board-level work performed without doing it yourself.
Have the controller model, the affected stick, and the troubleshooting steps you already tried ready when contacting a provider. Describe whether the drift occurs across games and whether the reset, update, and cleaning changed it. Ask what part will be used and whether the work is covered by a service warranty. Prices, eligibility, and turnaround are case-specific; PlayStation’s support page is the appropriate place to check current official options.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the scope: test the same stick in another game and check whether menus also move.
- Record the symptom: note the direction, timing, and whether the signal is steady or intermittent.
- Restart: power the PS5 off and back on.
- Reset: press the rear DualSense reset button, reconnect by USB, and press PS.
- Update: use Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) to install controller software updates and install any pending PS5 update.
- Adjust the matching setting: use the affected game’s dead-zone control for a standard DualSense, or the Edge profile’s Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone control for DualSense Edge.
- Clean cautiously: remove surface grime and, if appropriate, use a lightly dampened cotton swab with high-concentration isopropyl alcohol around the stick.
- Re-test at rest: check whether the same unwanted input appears across games, and use a compatible tester only as an observation tool.
- Escalate: choose a standard-DualSense joystick repair, an Edge module replacement, PlayStation Repairs, or a qualified repair provider based on the controller and your skills.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Raising the dead zone too far: this can hide drift while making precise movement feel sluggish. Increase it in small steps rather than selecting the largest value.
- Applying Edge instructions to a standard DualSense: the Edge’s profile controls and replaceable module are model-specific.
- Calling every drift problem dirt: cleaning cannot restore a worn resistive track.
- Spraying cleaner into the controller: excess liquid can reach the board and other components.
- Opening the controller before checking software: reset, updates, and game settings are safer first tests.
- Buying an unverified replacement part: standard-DualSense revisions and Edge modules are not interchangeable by assumption.
- Treating a browser tester as calibration: it can show reported movement, but it does not replace an official repair or calibration procedure.
- Testing only one game: a title-specific setting can look like hardware drift if you never compare another game.
- Repeating a failed workaround: continually increasing a dead zone can reduce control precision without stopping a worsening hardware fault.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop experimenting with settings when the stick still moves at rest in multiple games after the reset, update, and careful cleaning. At that point, a dead zone is only concealing the symptom, and continued adjustment can degrade control precision. Use PlayStation Repairs if you want the official service path, or have a qualified technician replace the worn standard-DualSense joystick or Edge module. The appropriate fix is determined by the controller model: standard DualSense joystick replacement is soldered board work, while DualSense Edge uses a separately replaceable module.

If the controller is under warranty or a service program, check that route before opening it. If you choose independent repair, ask for a model-appropriate part and a written price. There is no universal repair price or guaranteed lifespan to quote, so make the decision using the controller’s symptoms, warranty status, and the provider’s current terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a dead-zone setting permanently fix PS5 stick drift?
No. A larger dead zone can hide a small, stable center offset, but it does not repair a worn resistive track or other damaged joystick component. It also makes small deliberate movements less responsive.
Does the PS5 have a universal dead-zone setting for every DualSense?
PlayStation documents stick sensitivity and dead-zone controls for DualSense Edge custom profiles. A standard DualSense does not have a documented universal PS5 system dead-zone menu, so look for the setting inside the affected game.
Recommended Free Tools
Will resetting a DualSense erase its pairing or configuration?
PlayStation’s reset instructions describe the rear-button reset as not reconfiguring the controller or changing its pairing settings. Turn off the PS5, press the rear reset button with a pin or similar tool, reconnect by USB, and press PS.
Can cleaning stop stick drift?
Cleaning may help when surface debris or grime interferes with movement. Use only a small amount of high-concentration isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab around the stick, keep liquid out of the controller, and let it evaporate. Cleaning will not restore a worn sensing track.
Is internal DualSense cleaning safe for every controller revision?
No. iFixit’s internal procedure is model-specific and addresses grime or grease-related faults. Opening the controller adds connector, shell, and electronics risks, so use a qualified technician if you cannot identify the revision and work safely on delicate hardware.
Can I replace a standard DualSense joystick without soldering?
Generally no. Replacing the standard DualSense joystick requires desoldering the existing component and soldering a replacement to the board. Choose professional service unless you already have the necessary equipment and board-level experience.
Can I use a DualSense Edge stick module in a standard DualSense?
No. The Edge module is a separately sold part made for DualSense Edge and is not a standard DualSense replacement component. Confirm the controller model before ordering.
When should I use PlayStation Repairs?
Use PlayStation Repairs for persistent drift after reset, updates, appropriate settings, and careful cleaning; for warranty or service-program questions; or whenever soldering and disassembly are outside your experience. Eligibility, pricing, and turnaround depend on your region and circumstances.
The Bottom Line
Start with the least risky checks: compare games, restart the PS5, reset the DualSense, update software, and clean the exterior carefully. Use only the dead-zone control that matches your controller and accept the precision trade-off. If drift persists across games, treat it as likely hardware: a standard DualSense needs soldered joystick replacement, while DualSense Edge uses a separately sold Edge module. Check PlayStation Repairs or a qualified provider before taking on work you cannot safely perform.
