The safest approach is layered: use AirNow and local alerts to decide when to stay indoors, make one room as clean as practical, prevent new particles from entering, and use a properly fitted respirator only when outdoor exposure cannot be avoided. Children, adults generally 65 and older, and people with asthma or other lung disease need especially conservative decisions because smoke can worsen breathing problems quickly.

Why wildfire smoke requires extra caution for these groups

Wildfire smoke contains fine particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs. Children breathe more air relative to their body size and their lungs are still developing. Older adults, particularly those with heart or lung disease, may have less respiratory reserve. Asthma and other lung conditions can make airways react strongly to irritants. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and AirNow identify children, older adults (generally age 65 and over), and people with asthma or lung disease as higher-risk groups.

Risk is not limited to visible smoke or strong odor. Fine particles can enter a building through leaks and mechanical ventilation, and indoor concentrations can rise when windows, doors, or fresh-air intakes remain open. A practical plan therefore combines exposure information, building controls, filtration, and symptom monitoring rather than relying on one product.

Let AirNow and local alerts set the day’s plan

Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local public-health or emergency-management alerts before planning outdoor activities, school drop-offs, exercise, or errands. Conditions can change as winds shift, so check again during a prolonged smoke event. Use the current alert to decide whether an activity should be postponed, shortened, moved indoors, or done in a cleaner location. Do not use yesterday’s air-quality reading as a guarantee for today.

When an alert indicates unhealthy smoke, keep outdoor time and exertion as low as practical for high-risk people. Running, sports, brisk walking, and physically demanding work increase the amount of polluted air inhaled. If an essential trip cannot be postponed, plan the shortest route, avoid peak-smoke periods shown on local alerts, and use the protective measures described below.

Prepare before smoke arrives

  1. Choose a cleaner-air room. Select an interior room large enough for the household, with few windows and doors. Everyone should know where it is and how to keep it closed during the event.
  2. Get a correctly sized portable air cleaner. Use the manufacturer’s room-size or clean-air-delivery rating rather than choosing by appearance alone. Prefer particle filtration and a model certified as low- or no-ozone. Obtain spare filters before smoke season if replacements may be difficult to find.
  3. Check central HVAC compatibility. Determine whether the system can safely use a MERV 13 filter, or the highest-rated filter the equipment can handle. A filter that is too restrictive can reduce airflow or strain a system; ask an HVAC professional if the rating or fit is uncertain.
  4. Stock health essentials. Keep prescribed medicines available, along with several days of food and water. Note evacuation routes, shelter locations, cooling centers, and local transportation information before an emergency makes travel difficult.
  5. Plan for children and caregivers. Arrange indoor activities, identify who will supervise children, and decide how older relatives or people with asthma will reach a cleaner location if the home becomes too hot or smoky.

Set up and operate a cleaner-air room

Close the room’s windows and door, then close other windows and exterior doors in the home. Run the portable cleaner continuously while smoke is present, preferably at the highest fan speed that household members can tolerate. Keep the intake and exhaust unobstructed and place the unit where air can circulate around it. A cleaner sized for a small bedroom may not adequately serve a large living area.

Portable cleaners and HVAC filtration can reduce indoor smoke particles, but there is no single guaranteed percentage reduction for every home. Results depend on the cleaner’s size and operation, building leakage, how often doors open, and filter condition. Replace a loaded or damaged filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions; a clogged filter can reduce airflow and performance.

An air cleaner and a respirator solve different problems. The cleaner treats the air in a room over time, while a respirator protects the wearer during unavoidable exposure outside or around ash. A cleaner cannot make an outdoor task safe, and a mask cannot clean the air for other household members.

Use HVAC filtration without damaging the system

Install a properly fitting MERV 13 furnace filter when the HVAC manufacturer or a qualified professional confirms compatibility. If MERV 13 is not supported, use the highest compatible MERV rating rather than forcing a filter that causes excessive pressure. The filter must sit flush in its slot; gaps around the frame allow smoke to bypass it.

During smoke, set the system to recirculate indoor air and close the outdoor-air or fresh-air intake when that can be done safely and the equipment provides such a control. Do not disable required ventilation in a way that creates another hazard, and seek professional advice when the controls are unclear. Continue checking the filter because heavy smoke can load it faster than normal household dust.

Stop making indoor air worse

While outdoor smoke is present, avoid activities that add fine particles or irritants indoors:

  • Do not smoke or vape indoors.
  • Avoid candles, incense, fireplaces, wood stoves, and propane stoves unless their safe operation is essential.
  • Skip aerosol sprays and other products that create airborne particles.
  • Do not vacuum unless the vacuum has effective HEPA filtration; ordinary vacuums can redistribute fine dust.
  • Keep windows and doors closed as much as practical, opening them only when conditions clearly improve or safety requires it.

If the home cannot remain both reasonably cool and clean, move to a cleaner location such as a relative’s home, public building, or designated cooling center. Heat stress and smoke exposure can compound each other, especially for older adults and people with chronic disease.

What to wear when going outside is unavoidable

A NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator can reduce exposure to fine smoke particles when it seals snugly to the face. EPA guidance specifically notes that an N95 helps in smoky conditions when it fits tightly and leaves no gaps. Choose a genuine NIOSH approval marking and a two-strap design, and follow the manufacturer’s sizing and donning instructions.

Fit matters more than the label alone. Facial hair, glasses that interfere with the seal, damaged straps, or a mask that is too large can allow contaminated air around the edges. Perform the model’s user seal check every time it is put on. Replace a respirator that is dirty, damaged, difficult to breathe through, or no longer seals.

Dust masks, bandanas, cloth face coverings, and ordinary surgical masks are not equivalent substitutes for a properly fitted NIOSH-approved respirator against fine smoke particles. A respirator also does not protect against gases, heat, or every chemical in smoke, so reducing time outdoors remains the primary control.

Children under 2 should not wear respirators. For older children, a respirator may not seal correctly or may be too uncomfortable to wear consistently; never force a poor fit. Adults who are older or who have breathing disease should ask a clinician whether they can safely tolerate a respirator, particularly if breathing feels restricted while wearing it.

Tailor the plan to each high-risk group

Children

Keep children indoors when alerts indicate unhealthy smoke, and replace outdoor play or sports with indoor activities that do not generate particles. Check that the cleaner-air room is comfortable and that a portable unit cannot be tipped over or accessed by a small child. Infants and toddlers need close observation because they cannot reliably describe breathing difficulty. Do not put a respirator on a child younger than 2, and do not assume an older child is protected if the mask gaps, slips, or is removed repeatedly.

Older adults

Older adults may have heart or lung conditions, reduced mobility, or difficulty recognizing that smoke is worsening an existing problem. Arrange medication, food, water, and check-ins before conditions deteriorate. Limit exertion even for short outdoor tasks, and use a cleaner location if indoor temperature rises or the building cannot be kept closed. Anyone who finds a respirator hard to tolerate should consult a healthcare professional rather than improvising a looser mask.

People with asthma or other lung disease

Follow the individual asthma action plan and the healthcare provider’s instructions. Keep prescribed rescue and controller medicines accessible, including during travel or evacuation. Do not wait for severe symptoms before reducing exposure. Contact a clinician for worsening symptoms, breathing difficulty, shortness of breath, a cough that will not stop, or symptoms that do not improve with the person’s prescribed plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce exposure in cars and during travel

In a vehicle, close the windows and use the air-conditioning system’s recirculate setting. Avoid drawing smoky outside air into the cabin. Keep trips brief, postpone nonessential travel during the worst conditions shown by local alerts, and do not leave children, older adults, or anyone with asthma in a parked vehicle while waiting for air quality to improve.

If evacuation is necessary, take medicines, masks for eligible household members, food, water, chargers, and medical information. A vehicle’s recirculated air is not a substitute for a clean building; once at the destination, establish a closed room and use available filtration.

Recognize symptoms and know when to get help

Smoke exposure can cause eye and throat irritation, coughing, wheezing, chest discomfort, fatigue, or shortness of breath. For someone with asthma, follow the action plan at the first sign of worsening control. Seek medical advice when breathing becomes difficult, a cough will not stop, symptoms keep worsening, or prescribed treatment is not providing the expected relief. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, inability to speak normally because of breathlessness, bluish lips or face, confusion, fainting, or any other emergency sign.

Do not attribute serious symptoms to smoke alone. Heart attacks, infections, and other emergencies can occur during smoke events, and high-risk people may have atypical symptoms. When in doubt, obtain urgent medical guidance.

Compare the main protective options

Option Best use What to verify Important limits
Portable particle air cleaner Continuous reduction of fine particles in a selected indoor room Room-size or CADR rating, particle filtration, low- or no-ozone design, noise level, unobstructed airflow, replacement-filter cost Only treats the space where it operates; performance falls with open doors, leaks, undersizing, or a loaded filter
Central HVAC filter Whole-home circulation when the system is running MERV 13 if compatible, otherwise the highest compatible rating; correct dimensions and a tight fit Some systems cannot handle higher resistance; it does not stop smoke entering through open windows or doors
NIOSH-approved N95 Short, unavoidable outdoor or ash exposure NIOSH approval, two straps, correct size, intact seal, user seal check Requires a close fit and consistent wear; not for children under 2; uncomfortable or unsuitable for some people with breathing disease
NIOSH-approved P100 Respiratory protection when a suitable P100 is available and tolerated Approval, fit, straps, breathing resistance, and user instructions Usually bulkier and potentially harder to tolerate; it does not make prolonged outdoor activity safe
Dust mask, bandana, cloth covering, or surgical mask General face covering for other purposes There is no smoke-particle equivalence to an approved respirator Not a substitute for a properly fitted N95 or P100 against fine smoke particles

Troubleshoot common failures

The room still smells smoky

Check that every window and exterior door is closed, the HVAC fresh-air intake is not drawing smoke indoors, and the cleaner matches the room size. Move the unit away from curtains or furniture, run it at a higher tolerable speed, and inspect the filter. If smoke persists, the building may be leaking heavily or the room may be too large; relocate to a better-sealed, smaller space or another building.

The HVAC system seems weak after installing a filter

Turn the system off and confirm the filter dimensions, airflow direction, and seating. If airflow remains poor or the equipment makes unusual noise, reinstall the previously approved rating and ask an HVAC professional which higher-efficiency filter the system can safely use. Never tape over a bypass gap or force a filter that does not fit.

The respirator fogs glasses or feels loose

Try the correct size and adjust both straps according to the manufacturer’s directions. Mold the nose area when the model provides a nose clip and perform a seal check. Facial hair in the sealing area can prevent a reliable fit. If a seal cannot be achieved, leave the smoky area rather than relying on a loose covering.

Someone cannot stay cool indoors

Contact local emergency services or public-health authorities for cooling-center information, and move to a cleaner, cooler building if possible. Keep the person hydrated as medically appropriate, avoid exertion, and monitor for heat illness as well as respiratory symptoms.

A practical decision sequence during a smoke event

  1. Check AirNow and local alerts before leaving home.
  2. Postpone outdoor activity or move it indoors when conditions are unhealthy, especially for high-risk people.
  3. Close windows, doors, and appropriate fresh-air intakes; set HVAC to recirculate.
  4. Run the correctly sized portable cleaner continuously in the selected room.
  5. Remove indoor particle sources such as smoking, candles, incense, aerosol sprays, and unfiltered vacuuming.
  6. If going outside cannot be avoided, minimize time and exertion and use a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 for people old enough and medically able to wear one.
  7. Follow the asthma action plan, keep medicines available, and seek medical help when symptoms worsen or fail to improve.
