To reduce slippage and failed transactions during congestion, check the quoted output, pool liquidity and price impact before signing; set slippage tolerance only as wide as the loss you can accept; keep a large trade from overwhelming a shallow pool; and use a current network-fee estimate without cutting the gas limit below what execution needs. If conditions are unusually volatile, waiting or using a compatible Layer 2 may be safer than forcing the transaction.
The mechanics below are clearest on Ethereum and Uniswap, where the cited documentation describes the controls. Other wallets, chains and decentralized exchanges may label or expose these settings differently.
What slippage is—and why congestion makes it harder
Slippage is the difference between the price shown when you prepare a swap and the price at which it actually executes. A quote is not locked while a transaction waits for inclusion. If other trades move the pool before your transaction is processed, your final amount can be lower than the quote.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTwo conditions amplify that movement: shallow liquidity and a large order relative to the pool. A pool with little depth can move substantially when one trade consumes a meaningful share of its available reserves. A busy network adds another variable because a transaction may wait longer while the market changes.

Slippage is separate from the network fee. Slippage changes the exchange rate; gas is the cost of asking the blockchain to process the transaction. Congestion can affect both at once, but they are not interchangeable losses.
Slippage tolerance is the maximum price difference you permit between submission and execution. If the market moves beyond that boundary, the swap should not execute. A tolerance that is too tight can make a legitimate trade revert; one that is too wide protects execution at the cost of accepting a materially worse fill. Uniswap’s explanations and examples are documented at What is Slippage? and How to Minimize Slippage on Your Swaps.
Inspect the trade before you sign
Do not start by changing the tolerance or fee. First establish what the interface is offering and what outcome you would reject.
- Read the quoted output. Record the amount you expect to receive and the asset you will receive. Confirm that the input and output tokens are the intended pair.
- Find the minimum output. This is the lowest amount the transaction is allowed to deliver after applying your slippage tolerance. If that amount would make the trade unacceptable, cancel rather than widening the setting.
- Check price impact. Price impact estimates how much your own order moves the pool price. A high value is a warning that the trade is large for the available liquidity, even if the displayed quote looks attractive.
- Review liquidity or pool depth. Shallow depth means ordinary-sized orders can move the price more. The exact display differs by interface, so treat the value as a condition to evaluate, not as a universal safety score.
- Check the network fee estimate and the likely confirmation time. During congestion, a quote can change while the transaction waits. Make sure the fee is affordable before submitting.
Uniswap says its app and wallet estimate slippage for each swap and let users set a maximum. Those are provider-described features, not a guarantee that any trade will execute at the displayed rate.

Choose a slippage tolerance deliberately
Set the boundary to the greatest price movement you are genuinely willing to accept, not to a number chosen simply because an earlier transaction failed. A lower value gives stronger price protection but leaves less room for movement during confirmation. A higher value improves the chance of execution while allowing a worse fill.
| Choice | What it protects | What it risks | When it can make sense |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tighter tolerance | Limits the maximum price deterioration | A small market move can cause a revert or leave the swap pending | When protecting price matters more than immediate execution and the pair is liquid enough to support the narrow boundary |
| Wider tolerance | Leaves more room for a moving market to execute | The final fill can be substantially worse than the quote | Only when you have explicitly accepted that worst-case price and understand the pair’s volatility and liquidity |
There is no fixed percentage that is appropriate for every token, pool or market condition. Uniswap’s guide uses a low-liquidity example with 1% or more and a deep stablecoin-pool example with 0.05%; those figures illustrate different situations, not recommendations for your trade.
If the interface shows a minimum output that you would not accept, stop. Increasing tolerance to force the transaction through turns a visible failure into a potentially expensive execution.
Match trade size to pool depth
Compare the size of your swap with the pool’s available liquidity. If your order is large relative to a shallow pool, the trade itself can create a large price impact. Reducing the amount may improve the quoted rate. Splitting a large order into smaller chunks may also reduce the impact on a pool, but it does not guarantee a better aggregate result: each chunk can face a new quote, a new fee and new market movement.

When splitting can help
- The interface reports substantial price impact for the full amount.
- The pool is visibly shallow compared with the order.
- You can tolerate multiple transactions and their separate network costs.
- The pair remains liquid enough that later chunks will not be disadvantaged by the first chunk.
When splitting may not help
- Each additional transaction adds a fee that outweighs the possible price improvement.
- The market is moving quickly and later chunks could receive worse prices.
- The interface or wallet imposes limits that make repeated submissions unreliable.
For a supported pair, a limit order can specify an acceptable price instead of accepting a continuously moving quote. Availability depends on the pair and interface; it is not a feature every wallet or decentralized exchange provides.
Understand Ethereum fees during congestion
On Ethereum, the transaction fee is the gas used multiplied by the cost per unit of gas. The cost includes a base fee and a priority fee. The base fee reflects network demand; the priority fee is an incentive for validators to prioritize the transaction. Ethereum’s technical documentation explains the model at Ethereum gas and fees: technical overview and describes Type 2 (EIP-1559) transactions, with base- and priority-fee fields, at Transactions.
A fee that is too low can delay inclusion or leave the transaction out of a block while the market keeps moving. Offering more than necessary can waste ETH. A failed transaction can still consume gas; Ethereum’s gas documentation states that “The gas fee is the amount of gas used to do some operation, multiplied by the cost per unit gas. The fee is paid regardless of whether a transaction succeeds or fails.” See Ethereum fees: what is gas and how to pay less?.
The following figures are illustrative gas-unit amounts published by Ethereum.org, accessed in 2026. They are not current fee quotes and are not universal requirements for every wallet, contract or network.

| Operation | Illustrative gas units | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Send ETH | 21,000 | Example published by Ethereum.org; the total cost still depends on the unit gas price |
| Send an ERC-20 token | 65,000 | Illustrative value, not a guarantee for every token contract |
| Transfer an NFT | 84,904 | Illustrative value; contract behavior can differ |
| Swap on Uniswap | 184,523 | Illustrative value, not a universal requirement for every route or pool |
Do not infer a success rate or a particular dollar cost from these examples. A transaction using the same operation can consume a different amount of gas depending on the contract path and execution conditions.
Use fee controls without making execution less reliable
Start with the wallet’s current automatic estimate unless you have a specific reason to adjust it. During congestion, indiscriminately lowering a fee can delay or prevent inclusion. Also avoid lowering the gas limit below what the transaction needs: the call can fail after consuming the gas spent up to that point.
Uniswap Wallet’s support documentation describes three adjustable controls: maximum base fee, priority fee and gas limit. These labels and behaviors apply to that wallet’s documented interface, not to every wallet or chain:
Recommended Free Tools
- Maximum base fee: If the ceiling is below the network’s base fee, the transaction cannot go through. Raising it allows inclusion when the base fee is higher, but may increase the fee you authorize.
- Priority fee: A higher tip can make a transaction more attractive for prioritization on EIP-1559 networks. It does not prevent slippage while the transaction waits.
- Gas limit: This caps the gas available to execution. Setting it too low can cause failure; setting it higher than needed does not by itself make the swap safer.
The wallet guide’s exact controls and explanations are at How to customize network costs in the Uniswap Wallet. Recheck the labels in your own wallet before signing because interfaces change.

A practical submission sequence
- Confirm the network. Verify that the wallet and application are connected to the intended chain and that the assets exist on that network. A transaction sent on the wrong network is not repaired by changing slippage.
- Open the swap details. Note the quote, minimum output, price impact, liquidity information and estimated fee.
- Set the tolerance from your loss limit. Ask, “What is the worst execution price I will accept?” Enter a boundary consistent with that answer. Never widen it merely because a prior attempt reverted.
- Reduce or split the trade if impact is high. Compare the possible price improvement with the cost and risk of multiple transactions.
- Check for a limit-order option. If the pair and interface support one, use it when you prefer a specified price to a moving market order.
- Review fee settings. Use the current estimate or a defensible manual setting. Do not set the maximum base fee below the network’s current base fee, and do not reduce the gas limit below the wallet’s execution estimate.
- Submit once and monitor. Repeated retries during congestion can charge gas repeatedly. Wait for a clear status before deciding whether another action is necessary.
- Verify the result on the correct network. Check the transaction status and the resulting balance before attempting another swap.
What to do when a transaction is pending or fails
The swap reverts because of slippage
A revert means the market moved beyond the permitted boundary or execution could not meet the transaction’s conditions. Recheck volatility, pool depth and price impact. If the minimum output is no longer acceptable, abandon the trade. If you still want to proceed, reassess the amount, timing and tolerance together rather than changing only the tolerance.
The transaction remains pending
A low fee can leave a transaction waiting while the base fee changes. A pending swap is exposed to further market movement. Compare the wallet’s fee estimate with current network conditions and follow the wallet’s documented replacement or cancellation process, if available. Do not submit an unrelated retry until you understand the original transaction’s status.
The wallet says the fee is too low
On a wallet with a maximum-base-fee control, a ceiling below the network base fee prevents inclusion. Raise the ceiling only to a level you can afford, or wait for demand to fall. A higher priority fee may improve prioritization on EIP-1559 networks, but it cannot compensate for an unacceptable quote or shallow liquidity.

Execution fails after consuming gas
A gas limit that is too low can stop contract execution after gas has been spent. Restore the wallet’s estimated limit rather than guessing a smaller number. Because failed transactions can still incur gas costs, avoid repeated attempts without correcting the cause.
Trade now, wait, or use another network?
| Decision | Advantage | Cost or risk | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trade immediately | You get exposure without waiting | The quote, gas price and confirmation time may change during congestion | The minimum output and fee are acceptable and the opportunity matters more than waiting |
| Wait for calmer conditions | Prices, liquidity or fees may become more favorable | The market can move against you while you wait; lower costs are not guaranteed | The trade is not time-sensitive and the current price impact or fee is unacceptable |
| Use a compatible Layer 2 | Off-chain batching and higher throughput can reduce Mainnet congestion and user gas fees | Network designs differ, and the application, wallet and assets must all support the chosen network | You have confirmed compatibility and understand the network’s operating and execution model |
| Use a limit order, where available | Defines an acceptable price instead of accepting a moving quote | Availability is pair- and interface-dependent, and the order may not fill | Price protection matters more than immediate execution |
Ethereum.org explains that Layer 2 networks handle transactions away from Mainnet and that rollups can lower user gas fees, while implementations differ in operation, batching and security. Its overview is at Scaling. A Layer 2 does not remove market, bridge or execution risk, and moving assets between networks can involve additional steps.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using one tolerance for every token. Volatility, liquidity and trade size vary; a number suitable for a deep stablecoin pool may be inappropriate for a thin, volatile pair.
- Confusing a failed swap with a fee problem. A swap can fail because of slippage or contract execution even when the fee was adequate. Diagnose the status message and trade details separately.
- Lowering the gas limit to save money. A limit below the execution requirement can cause failure while still consuming gas.
- Retrying immediately. Each submission can incur another network cost, and congestion may still be causing the original problem.
- Assuming a Layer 2 is automatically compatible. Confirm support in the wallet, application and asset contracts before transferring funds.
- Treating example percentages as rules. The 0.05% and 1% examples in Uniswap’s educational material describe hypothetical pool conditions, not a universal setting.
Final pre-sign checklist
- The network shown in the wallet is the one the application and assets support.
- The quoted output and minimum output are both acceptable.
- Price impact and pool depth are reasonable for the trade size.
- Slippage tolerance matches the maximum loss you consciously accept.
- The fee estimate reflects current conditions and is affordable.
- The gas limit has not been reduced below the wallet’s required estimate.
- You understand that a failed transaction may still consume gas.
- You have considered waiting, reducing the amount, splitting the trade or using a supported limit order.
No setting makes a congested transaction failure-proof. The safest approach is to make the price boundary, pool impact and network cost explicit before signing, then submit only when all three remain acceptable.
