Reduce semiconductor risk systematically rather than selling everything in one day: inventory direct and hidden chip holdings, set a written exposure target, redirect new contributions, and sell only as much as needed after reviewing taxes, fees, spreads, and account rules. Semiconductor concentration is a form of market-segment concentration risk, so the remedy is broader diversification across asset categories and industry sectors—not simply swapping one chip stock for another technology fund.
What semiconductor concentration means for your portfolio
Semiconductor exposure is the share of your portfolio whose returns depend materially on chip manufacturers, chip-design firms, equipment suppliers, foundries, or businesses whose valuations are driven by semiconductor demand. The exposure may be direct, such as an individual stock or a semiconductor exchange-traded fund (ETF), or indirect, through technology funds and broad-market indexes that own the same companies.
FINRA describes concentration risk as the possibility of amplified losses when a large portion of holdings sits in one investment, asset class, or market segment. It specifically warns that owning individual technology companies alongside technology funds and index funds can create overlapping exposure that is easy to miss (FINRA, 2022). A portfolio can therefore look diversified by account or fund count while remaining concentrated in the same underlying chip companies.

It is whether the amount of risk tied to that segment is consistent with your time horizon, risk tolerance, financial goals, and ability to withstand a prolonged drawdown. The SEC investor guidance says diversification should occur both between asset categories and within them, including across industry sectors. Investor.gov defines rebalancing as restoring a portfolio to its original target mix after some holdings grow faster than others.

Start with an exposure inventory, not a trade
Before deciding what to sell, create one list containing every account and position. Include taxable brokerage accounts, individual retirement accounts, workplace plans, health savings accounts, employer stock, and any options or other derivatives. Record the current market value, cost basis where available, account type, and whether the position is restricted or subject to a plan rule.
List direct semiconductor holdings
- Individual chip manufacturers, designers, foundries, and equipment companies.
- Semiconductor-sector mutual funds and ETFs.
- Options, restricted stock, or employee awards whose value is linked to a semiconductor company.
For an option, do not count only the cash premium. Consider the economic exposure created by the contract’s notional value and sensitivity to the underlying share price. If you cannot calculate that exposure confidently, ask a qualified tax or investment professional before treating the position as diversified.
Inspect technology and broad-market funds
Open each fund’s current holdings page or shareholder report and identify duplicated chip companies. A technology fund may hold many semiconductor names, while a broad-market index fund may own those same companies because they are large constituents of the overall market. Count the underlying companies rather than assuming each fund is an independent source of risk.

Divide the market value of each holding by the total portfolio value. Then add the weights of duplicated semiconductor companies across all funds. If a fund reports only its top holdings, treat the resulting figure as a minimum rather than a complete exposure estimate; document the date and coverage of your data.
Use two separate totals:
- Semiconductor exposure: direct holdings plus the look-through value of chip-related companies in funds and employer stock.
- Broader technology exposure: semiconductor exposure plus other technology companies and technology-sector funds.
Keeping both totals prevents a partial solution. Selling a standalone chip stock may lower direct exposure while leaving a large indirect position inside a technology fund.
Set targets that fit your situation
There is no universal percentage at which semiconductor exposure becomes excessive. An appropriate allocation depends on how soon you need the money, how much loss you can tolerate without abandoning your plan, the stability of your income, emergency reserves, debt, and other assets such as a business or employer stock. The SEC notes that choosing an appropriate allocation is a complicated task tied to the risk level an investor can live with.
Write three targets
- Semiconductor ceiling: the maximum share of the total portfolio you are willing to link to the segment.
- Technology ceiling: the maximum share for technology as a broader sector, including chips.
- Rest-of-portfolio mix: the intended allocation among other equity sectors, bonds, and cash.
Write the targets as ranges or a target plus an allowed band. A range can reduce unnecessary trading when prices move slightly, while a target-and-band rule gives you a clear trigger. The targets should cover all accounts where you can make changes; otherwise an apparently balanced brokerage account can be offset by concentrated employer shares in a workplace plan.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse an illustrative allocation only as a planning tool
For example, an investor might decide that chips should remain a small satellite position, technology should stay below a broader sector limit, and the remainder should be distributed among diversified nontechnology equities, high-quality bonds, and cash reserves. Those percentages are hypothetical planning illustrations, not a recommendation or a benchmark. Your written policy should explain why the limits fit your goals and what you will do when they are breached.

Choose a rebalancing rule before markets move
Investor.gov says rebalancing can be done on a calendar, such as every six or twelve months, or when an allocation moves beyond a preset percentage. Either approach can work, and rebalancing tends to work best when it is relatively infrequent. A written rule reduces the temptation to trade in response to headlines.
Calendar rule
Choose one or two review dates each year. On each date, calculate current weights and trade only when a position is outside the permitted band. A calendar review is easy to remember and can be coordinated with tax planning, workplace-plan enrollment, or an annual financial checkup.
Threshold rule
Set a trigger for each target. For instance, a semiconductor ceiling could have a defined percentage-point band, with action required only when the weight exceeds the upper boundary. The exact band is a personal design choice; make it wide enough to avoid constant turnover and narrow enough to prevent the concentration from becoming materially different from your plan.
Hybrid rule
Review on a fixed schedule and also act when a major deposit, withdrawal, vesting event, or market move pushes an allocation beyond its band. Record the review date, calculated weights, decision, and next scheduled check.
Reduce exposure with the least disruptive method first
Investor.gov identifies three broad rebalancing methods: changing contributions, directing dividends or interest, and selling or buying holdings. Use them in an order that addresses the concentration while limiting avoidable taxes and turnover.
1. Redirect new contributions
Send new money to underweight categories instead of adding to semiconductor or technology funds. In a workplace plan, change future payroll allocations if the plan menu allows it. In an individual account, direct deposits and reinvested distributions toward the categories below their targets.
This method can lower the semiconductor percentage without creating a taxable sale. It is slower when the portfolio is severely concentrated or when contributions are small relative to the existing balance, so measure the projected weight after each planned contribution.

3. Trim in stages
If contributions and distributions cannot bring the allocation within range, sell a portion of the most concentrated positions. A staged trim can spread realized gains across tax years and reduce the risk of making one large timing decision. It also leaves residual exposure, so recalculate after every trade rather than assuming a fixed dollar sale solved the problem.
4. Make a larger reset when the policy requires it
A larger sale may be appropriate when the position threatens a financial goal, represents an employer-stock risk, or exceeds your written ceiling by a wide margin. Compare the benefits of faster concentration reduction with the tax bill, transaction costs, spread, and behavioral impact before submitting the order.
Compare the trade-offs of each approach
| Approach | How quickly concentration falls | Tax and cost considerations | Residual overlap to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redirect contributions | Gradual; depends on contribution size | Usually avoids selling an appreciated position; normal fund expenses still apply | Existing chip holdings in funds and employer stock remain |
| Redirect distributions | Gradual and tied to dividend or interest payments | May avoid a sale; confirm account and reinvestment settings | Fund distributions can still be reinvested automatically if settings are unchanged |
| Partial trim | Moderate; lowers the largest positions while preserving some exposure | Realized gains, transaction fees, bid-ask spreads, and possible tax withholding | Technology and broad-market funds may still own the same companies |
| Large reset | Fastest | Potentially larger realized gains, spreads, and turnover in a short period | Replacement funds can recreate technology concentration if holdings are not inspected |
Decide what to add instead of semiconductors
The goal is not to exchange one concentrated theme for another. The SEC’s diversification guidance points to both asset-category and industry-sector diversification. A replacement should therefore be evaluated for how it changes the portfolio’s total risk, not merely for whether it carries a different label.
Broaden equity exposure across sectors
Use diversified equity funds or holdings that add sectors with different business drivers from chip demand. Inspect their constituent companies so that a fund marketed as broad does not simply reproduce the same large technology positions. Consider whether your existing broad-market index already supplies enough exposure before adding another overlapping fund.
Add bonds for a different return driver
Bonds can reduce reliance on equity-sector valuations and provide assets that may be available for planned spending without selling a volatile technology position. Match bond duration and credit risk to your time horizon and cash-flow needs; a bond fund is not automatically low risk, and its value can decline when interest rates rise.
Hold an intentional cash reserve
Cash can cover near-term expenses and reduce the need to sell concentrated equities during a downturn. Keep the reserve sized to your actual emergency and spending needs rather than treating cash as a permanent substitute for a long-term allocation.
Use account location thoughtfully
Some investors place higher-turnover or income-producing assets in tax-advantaged accounts and keep tax-efficient broad funds in taxable accounts. Account rules differ, and changing the location of an asset may create fees, restrictions, or tax consequences. Treat location as a secondary optimization after setting the overall exposure target.

Handle taxes, fees, and trading mechanics before selling

Taxable accounts
Identify each tax lot’s purchase date, cost basis, and unrealized gain or loss. Selling lots with losses may offset gains under applicable tax rules, while selling appreciated lots can create a taxable gain. Wash-sale rules can affect the treatment of losses when you repurchase substantially identical securities; obtain current tax advice for your jurisdiction before relying on a loss-harvesting plan.
Tax-advantaged accounts
Rebalancing inside a retirement account may avoid an immediate capital-gains event, but withdrawals, contribution limits, required distributions, and plan restrictions still matter. Workplace plans may offer only a limited menu or impose transfer rules. Confirm the specific account terms rather than assuming every account is interchangeable.
Order execution
Review the bid-ask spread and liquidity of thinly traded securities. A market order prioritizes execution but not price; a limit order controls the worst acceptable price but may not fill. Avoid placing a complex set of trades until you know how each order type works and how your custodian handles partial fills.

Recheck overlap after every change
After trades settle, repeat the inventory. Update each holding’s market value, recalculate direct and look-through semiconductor weights, and verify that the technology ceiling has not been breached by the replacement assets. Record the next review date and the rule that will trigger action.
Fund holdings change over time. A fund that is diversified today can become more technology-heavy after index reconstitution or market appreciation. Schedule a holdings review at the same frequency as your rebalancing policy and whenever a fund changes its strategy, benchmark, or prospectus.

Trading on a headline
Symptom: You change the allocation after a price surge or a negative news cycle.
Fix: Apply the written calendar or threshold rule and document why an exception is justified.
Ignoring taxes until after the order
Symptom: A seemingly small trim produces an unexpectedly large tax bill.
Fix: Review tax lots, estimated gains, account type, and available loss offsets before selecting the shares to sell.
Replacing one theme with another
Symptom: A new fund has a different name but still holds many of the same companies or a similarly narrow industry group.

Never updating the policy
Symptom: The original targets no longer fit a changed job, time horizon, spending need, or risk tolerance.
Fix: Revisit the targets after major life changes, not only after market moves.
A practical rebalance checklist
- List every account, security, option, employer share, and cash balance.
- Collect current values, tax lots, account rules, and fund holdings dates.
- Add duplicated semiconductor companies across funds to estimate look-through exposure.
- Calculate separate semiconductor and broader technology weights.
- Write target ceilings, acceptable bands, and the intended mix for other sectors, bonds, and cash.
- Choose a calendar, threshold, or hybrid review rule.
- Redirect contributions and distributions to underweight categories.
- Estimate taxes, fees, spreads, and turnover before any sale.
- Select the smallest trim that brings the portfolio toward policy, unless a larger reset is necessary for a defined goal.
- Recalculate exposure after settlement and record the next review date.
When professional help is warranted
Consider qualified, jurisdiction-appropriate advice when concentrated shares are tied to employment, options have complex tax treatment, a sale could create a large gain, your accounts span multiple countries, or you cannot obtain reliable look-through holdings. Ask how the adviser is paid, what fiduciary obligations apply, which accounts they can manage, and how they handle taxes and rebalancing. A professional can help implement your policy, but you still need to understand the target and approve the risk you are taking.
The decision in one sentence
Reduce semiconductor exposure by measuring the risk that exists across every account, setting a written ceiling and drift rule, using new money first, and selling deliberately only after accounting for taxes, fees, spreads, and the overlap that remains in technology and broad-market funds.
