Start by setting MSI Afterburner’s Power Limit to 80%, then compare the same game scene with stock settings. In Tom’s Hardware’s eight-test RTX 4090 Founders Edition suite, that setting reduced average measured board power from 402.3 W to 353.8 W while lowering the geometric-mean frame rate by 2.3%. Your result can differ by game, card model, firmware and workload, so treat 80% as a reversible starting experiment—not a guaranteed optimum.
What you can realistically save
An RTX 4090 is designed for very high performance, and its power draw changes with the workload. NVIDIA’s reference specifications list 450 W total graphics power and 315 W average gaming power. The 315 W figure is an average across 22 games at 4K, 1440p and 1080p; it is not a cap and it is not a promise that every partner card behaves the same way. Factory-overclocked models can have different stock limits and responses.
Lowering the power limit does not force the card to consume a fixed percentage of its stock wattage. It sets a ceiling that the GPU may reach during demanding work. A lightly loaded or CPU-limited game may draw far below that ceiling, while a ray-traced scene can run into it quickly. A frame-rate cap, adaptive sync limit or menu screen can also reduce power without any tuning, because the GPU is not rendering as many frames.
Tom’s Hardware tested an NVIDIA RTX 4090 Founders Edition at power-limit settings from 50% to 120% in eight demanding tests. Its article, published October 29, 2022, used a Core i9-12900K test system and FrameView to collect frame rate, clock, temperature and power data. Relative to stock, its geometric-mean frame-rate changes were:

| Power-limit setting | Geometric-mean frame-rate change | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 80% | −2.3% | Small average performance loss in this test suite |
| 70% | −5% | More efficiency, with a noticeable but moderate loss |
| 60% | −10% | Substantial performance trade-off |
| 50% | −23% | Large performance reduction |
Average measured power in that same suite fell from 402.3 W at stock to 353.8 W at 80%. Tom’s Hardware described 80% as an efficiency sweet spot for its Founders Edition sample. The review’s software readings were within about 10 W of its Powenetics measurements. These figures are useful evidence, not a guarantee for a current system, newer game versions or an add-in-board card.
The review also found roughly 20–30% better overall efficiency at 60–70% limits, but the larger frame-rate penalty makes those settings a different choice. They may suit a quiet, low-heat system where maximum performance is less important; they are not automatically better for gaming.
Check your exact card before changing anything
Find the manufacturer and complete model name on the card, its box or the label in your system. Open the manufacturer’s specifications page and note the stated power limit, boost clock and any utility restrictions. NVIDIA explicitly notes that add-in-card specifications vary. A partner card with a factory overclock may start at a different limit than the 450 W reference design, and its slider range may not match the Founders Edition. Do not convert the 450 W reference figure into a promised wattage for every RTX 4090.
- Install the current graphics driver recommended for your card.
- Install MSI Afterburner from a trustworthy source. The utility can monitor clocks, voltage, temperature, frame rate and power, save profiles, and restore defaults.
- Close other GPU-intensive programs while testing. Browser video, recording software and background renderers can change the result.
- Make sure the card and power connectors are fully seated and that the case has normal airflow. A power reduction cannot fix a loose connector or severe thermal problem.
Record a stock baseline
Do not tune from memory. Choose one repeatable benchmark or a gameplay route that represents how you use the card. A built-in benchmark is ideal; otherwise record the same 60–120-second section of a game. Keep resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing options, upscaling mode, frame-rate cap and driver settings unchanged. If a game compiles shaders during the first run, let that finish before comparing results.
In Afterburner’s monitoring panel, enable or record at least:
- Average frame rate and, where available, 1% low frame rate
- GPU power or power percentage
- GPU clock and memory clock
- GPU voltage
- GPU temperature and fan speed
Run the test at least twice at stock and use the second run if the first was affected by loading or shader compilation. Save screenshots or a small log. If two stock runs vary significantly, find the cause before tuning: background activity, thermal saturation or a changing benchmark path can hide a small 2–3% difference.

Power readings should be compared consistently. A card’s sensor reading is not the same as a wall-meter reading for the whole PC. Use the same sensor and logging method for stock and tuned runs, and report whether you are discussing GPU board power or complete-system consumption.
Method 1: lower the Power Limit first
Set an 80% starting point
- Open MSI Afterburner.
- Leave core clock, memory clock and voltage controls at their stock values for this first test.
- Move the Power Limit (%) slider to 80%. If the control is locked, use the unlock or settings options only if your card and firmware support it; some models expose a narrower range.
- Click Apply (the check-mark button).
- Run the identical benchmark or gameplay segment and record the same readings.
The percentage is a limit relative to the card’s configured board-power target. It is not a watt meter, and measured draw will not necessarily equal 80% of stock draw. Tom’s Hardware’s 80% result was 353.8 W versus 402.3 W at stock, not exactly 80% of 402.3 W. Actual draw depends on clocks, voltage, utilization, temperature and the game engine.
A CPU-limited game may show almost no frame-rate change because the GPU was not using its full allowance in the first place. Conversely, a heavily ray-traced, GPU-bound scene can lose more than the geometric mean if it repeatedly reaches the ceiling.
Try smaller steps when 80% is not ideal
MSI’s undervolting guide recommends testing power limits in 5% increments across roughly the 70–90% range. Try 85%, 80%, 75% and 70% (or use a narrower range around the best result) and test each setting separately. Keep the setting that meets your noise, temperature or energy target with an acceptable frame-rate change.
A lower limit can improve efficiency, but the performance curve is not linear. Tom’s Hardware found about 20–30% better overall efficiency at 60–70% limits, accompanied by larger performance losses than at 80%. Moving from 80% to 75% may be worthwhile for a particular title, while another game may show a disproportionate drop. Your preferred point is the one measured in your games, not the lowest available slider value.
What the benchmark results mean in individual games
The geometric means hide meaningful game-to-game differences. In Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, the 80% setting cut measured power by 18% and performance by 5%; at 70%, the test retained 92% of its base frame rate. In Cyberpunk 2077, 80% delivered 96% of stock performance while using 85% of the power, and 70% delivered 94% of performance while using 75% of the power.

| Example from Tom’s Hardware’s 2022 suite | 80% limit | 70% limit |
|---|---|---|
| Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition | 18% lower measured power; 5% lower performance | 92% of base frame rate |
| Cyberpunk 2077 | 96% of stock performance at 85% of stock power | 94% of performance at 75% of stock power |
These are results from one Founders Edition card and that review’s settings. Ray-traced, GPU-bound scenes are more likely to hit the limit than a game waiting on the CPU. Test the games and resolutions you actually play rather than relying on one synthetic benchmark. A 4K ultra benchmark may justify a different setting from a 1440p esports title.
Method 2: undervolt with the voltage-frequency curve
A curve undervolt lets you target a particular clock at a lower voltage instead of simply imposing a board-power ceiling. When it works, the GPU can retain useful clocks while producing less heat and using less power. MSI describes the possible benefits as lower power consumption, reduced heat generation, decreased fan noise and, in some cases, a few extra frames per second. Those benefits depend on the individual GPU and settings.
Open and edit the curve
- Open Afterburner and press Ctrl+F to open the Voltage/Frequency Curve Editor.
- Choose a voltage point to investigate and note the frequency shown for that point. MSI’s example discusses approximately 950 mV as a common point to examine; it is not a guaranteed RTX 4090 setting.
- Adjust the selected point to a clock that your baseline and early tests suggest is realistic.
- Flatten the points to the right of the selected point so the curve does not request a higher voltage and clock under load. The exact mouse and keyboard actions can vary with Afterburner versions.
- Close the curve editor, click Apply, and run a short benchmark.
Do not copy a millivolt-and-clock pair from another 4090 and assume it is safe. Silicon quality, cooling, BIOS limits, memory settings, driver versions and game engines all affect stability. Some 4090 firmware also restricts how far the curve can be adjusted. A lower voltage is not automatically more efficient if it causes repeated clock changes or frame-time spikes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsValidate the curve, then tune gradually
If the short test passes, run a longer benchmark and several real games. Change one variable at a time. If a setting crashes, produces visual corruption or lowers performance, return to the previous profile and reduce the target clock or choose a higher voltage at the same clock. A curve that survives one game can still fail in another, especially after a long session or a scene with heavy ray tracing.
Use profiles and keep a fallback
Afterburner can save multiple profiles. Save the untouched stock state before applying any change, then save a known-good 80% limit and each stable curve you want to compare. To recover from a bad profile, start Afterburner with tuning disabled or use its reset-to-default control, apply stock settings, and reboot if the driver remains unstable. Do not enable “apply at startup” until a profile has passed your full validation routine.
Record the profile’s power limit, curve target, core and memory offsets, driver version and test results. This makes it possible to identify which change caused a problem after a driver update or game patch. Keep one clearly labeled stock profile so troubleshooting does not require remembering several slider positions.

Recognize instability and diagnose it
- Driver reset or black screen: the voltage-frequency target is too aggressive, or the power limit is too low for that workload. Reset to stock, then retest with a less ambitious curve or higher limit.
- Colored speckles, flashes or geometry errors: treat artifacts as instability. Restore the last stable profile; do not continue gaming through visible corruption.
- Stutter or worse 1% lows: average FPS may look acceptable while the GPU repeatedly hits the limit or changes states. Compare frame-time behavior and try a slightly higher limit.
- Performance lower than expected without a crash: check that the GPU clock is not being held down by temperature, CPU limitation, a frame cap or background load. A lower power limit is not the only possible cause.
- Only one game fails: keep the profile only if the game is stable across the titles you care about. Otherwise back off the curve or create a game-specific profile.
Monitor the result during normal play
After synthetic testing, play for at least one long session in your most demanding title. Watch power, clock, temperature, fan speed and frame-time consistency with Afterburner’s on-screen display or logging. Compare the same settings at stock and tuned values. Lower average power is useful only if the resulting frame rate and frame pacing remain acceptable.
Recommended Free Tools
Expect power to vary with resolution and settings. Lowering resolution can move a game toward a CPU limit, while enabling ray tracing or raising image quality can make the GPU power limit more influential. A capped game may also consume less power simply because the GPU is not rendering additional frames. Test at the refresh rate and cap you actually use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Power reduction does not change the whole-PC PSU requirement
NVIDIA recommends an 850 W system power supply for its reference RTX 4090 configuration paired with a Ryzen 9 5900X, and says requirements vary by system configuration. That is a recommendation for the complete PC, not a statement that the card always draws 850 W or that setting an 80% limit makes any PSU automatically adequate. Account for the CPU, drives, fans, transient behavior, connector requirements and the exact partner-card specification when selecting or evaluating a power supply. Tuning should not be used to justify an undersized or unsuitable supply.
A practical decision path
- If you want the simplest reversible change, test an 80% power limit against stock.
- If the performance loss is larger than you accept, move upward in 5% steps or return to stock.
- If you want lower temperatures or noise while retaining a specific clock, investigate a voltage-frequency curve.
- Validate every profile in the games you actually use, including long sessions and demanding ray-traced scenes.
- Keep the stock profile available and disable automatic application until the tuned profile is proven stable.
The evidence supports an 80% limit as a sensible first experiment, not as a universal answer. Your measured baseline and repeatable tests are what determine whether the saving is worthwhile on your particular RTX 4090.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 80% power limit safe for an RTX 4090?
A lower power limit is a reversible software setting that caps the board-power target; it does not force a fixed wattage. Test the same workload after applying it, and restore stock settings if you see crashes, artifacts, stutter or unacceptable frame-time changes. The exact range depends on your card and firmware.

How many watts does an RTX 4090 use at an 80% limit?
There is no universal watt figure. In Tom’s Hardware’s Founders Edition test, average measured power was 353.8 W at 80%, compared with 402.3 W at stock. Your model and workload can produce different readings.

Should I use a power limit or undervolt first?
Use the power-limit slider first because it is simpler to compare and reset. If you want more control over clocks and voltage, try a voltage-frequency curve afterward, changing one variable at a time and validating it in real games.
Can undervolting increase FPS?
It can in some situations if lower heat and power allow the card to sustain useful clocks, but MSI describes extra FPS only as a possible outcome. There is no single voltage-and-clock pair proven for every RTX 4090.
Why did my FPS barely change after lowering the limit?
The game may be CPU-limited, frame-rate capped or otherwise not using the GPU’s full allowance at stock. Check GPU utilization, clock and power during the same scene. A demanding ray-traced, GPU-bound scene is more likely to show the effect.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does an 80% limit mean I can use a smaller PSU?
Not automatically. NVIDIA’s 850 W recommendation applies to a complete reference configuration with a Ryzen 9 5900X, and requirements vary by system. Evaluate the CPU, drives, fans, transients, connectors and exact card model rather than relying on the slider setting.
The Bottom Line
Measure stock performance first, then try an 80% power limit in MSI Afterburner. Tom’s Hardware saw a 2.3% average frame-rate loss and a drop from 402.3 W to 353.8 W on its Founders Edition sample. For further savings, tune the voltage-frequency curve gradually and validate every profile in the games you actually play.
