A PS5 fan that gets louder during some games can be operating normally; an on-screen high-temperature warning is different and calls for an immediate shutdown and cooldown. Stuttering alone does not prove the console is overheating. Start by checking placement and vents, then follow the troubleshooting path that matches the symptom.
First, identify what the PS5 is doing
“Overheating,” “loud fan,” “stuttering,” and “turning off” are often used to describe the same frustrating session, but they are not interchangeable diagnoses. A louder fan may be the console responding to a demanding game. A temperature warning is an explicit alert that the console is too hot. A performance drop or a crash can have a software, game-specific, connection, or console-related cause; the symptom alone does not establish which one.
Sony says temporary faster fan operation during some games and applications is normal and helps cool the system. That reassurance applies to fan noise by itself, not to a temperature warning or repeated shutdowns. If a warning appears, stop playing and use the heat-warning steps below rather than waiting to see whether the message clears. Why is my PS5 overheating or getting loud?

There is no need to diagnose a temperature from the sound alone. The official guidance does not set a decibel threshold or say that every fan speed change signals overheating. Step 1: Give the console room to breathe

Step 2: Clean the vents safely
If dust has built up, turn off the console and disconnect the AC cable at the rear before cleaning. This is an important safety step: do not vacuum around a powered console or leave it plugged in while you clean. Sony recommends using a low-powered vacuum to remove dust accumulated in and around the air vents. Keep the cleaning to that external area and follow the safety guidance for your model.
- Turn the PS5 off. Do not clean it while it is running.
- Disconnect the AC cable at the rear. Make sure the console is unplugged before using a vacuum.
- Use a low-powered vacuum around and in the air vents. The recommendation is for removing dust buildup, not for opening or dismantling the console.
- Check the surrounding area. Clear objects and dust that could block the vents or restrict the recommended 10 cm of clearance.
- Reconnect and use the console normally. If a high-temperature warning or persistent shutdown continues, move on to the warning and escalation steps instead of repeatedly cleaning or testing under load.
Sony’s guidance supports a low-powered vacuum for vent dust. It does not establish compressed air, internal disassembly, replacement thermal material, or a third-party cooling fan as recommended routine remedies. Avoid treating those methods as necessary steps or opening the console to reach internal components. Step 3: What to do when a high-temperature warning appears
A high-temperature message is different from ordinary fan noise. Sony’s CFI-21XX instruction manual states that the console displays a notification if it becomes too hot. Its instruction is to turn off the console and let it cool, move it to a well-ventilated place away from high temperatures, and check for blocked vents. Do not continue playing while the message remains on screen. Sony warns that continued use while the warning displays may make the console non-operational.
- Turn off the console. Do not keep playing to see whether the warning goes away on its own.
- Let it cool. Wait until the console has cooled before using it again; Sony’s guidance does not specify an exact number of minutes.
- Improve ventilation. Place it somewhere well ventilated, away from high temperatures, and leave the recommended clearance around it.
- Inspect the vents. Check that they are clear and not blocked by a wall, object, dust, or a cramped cabinet.
- If an M.2 SSD is installed, check its heat-dissipation parts. Sony advises checking that those parts have not detached. If you cannot safely check the installation, use the appropriate PlayStation support route rather than continuing to run the console with the warning.
If the warning returns after the console has cooled and you have corrected airflow, treat that as a persistent issue. Repeatedly restarting or continuing a gaming session is not the recommended response. Use the regional PlayStation Repairs or Support route for diagnostic help, especially if the console also shuts down or loses power.
Step 4: Troubleshoot stuttering without assuming heat
If the PS5 stutters or performance drops without a temperature warning, diagnose the performance problem on its own merits. First check for updates to both the game and the PS5 system software. A game that is freezing or crashing may have different troubleshooting steps depending on whether it is a disc or digital copy, so follow Sony’s applicable game-specific guidance rather than treating every crash as a cooling fault.

Next, determine whether the issue appears in one game or several. If only one game is affected, check that game’s update status and look for a game-specific problem; the publisher may know about an issue with that title. If more than one game is affected, Sony says the console may have an issue. This simple comparison can help you decide whether to continue with a game-specific fix or contact PlayStation support.

These options are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed ways to raise frame rates or cure thermal throttling. Sony does not promise that clearing the cache or rebuilding the database will resolve overheating, improve performance in every game, or fix a hardware fault. Use the Safe Mode guidance carefully, read the option descriptions on the official PlayStation page, and choose the option that matches the issue you are trying to address.
