The most reliable way to reduce damage from a technology-stock decline is to control concentration before the decline, set a stock-bond-cash allocation that matches your goal and loss capacity, diversify across different economic drivers, and rebalance according to a written rule. Selling everything after prices fall is not a risk-management plan: it can lock in losses, create taxes, and leave you without a strategy for getting back in.
There is no universal “safe” percentage for technology holdings or guaranteed hedge. The right mix depends on when you need the money, how much loss you can financially and emotionally withstand, and what you already own indirectly through funds, employer shares, options, and retirement plans.
Why a portfolio can be technology-heavy without looking like one
Technology exposure is often duplicated across several investments. A direct holding in a large technology company may sit beside a capitalization-weighted index fund, a growth fund, a target-date fund, and an employer-stock plan. Each position can appear diversified on its own while the combined portfolio depends on the same companies and the same growth assumptions.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission defines diversification as spreading money among different investments to reduce risk. Its asset-allocation guide explains that stocks have historically offered the greatest risk and return potential, bonds generally have lower volatility and more modest returns, and cash equivalents usually have the lowest risk and return. Because asset classes and sectors do not always move together, combining them can smooth the portfolio’s overall path. Diversification reduces concentration risk; it cannot eliminate losses in a broad market decline.

Market-cap weighting can hide concentration
A broad index fund can hold hundreds or thousands of companies but still assign a large share to the biggest technology businesses because the fund weights companies by market value. “Broad” therefore describes the number of holdings, not necessarily the independence of their risks. Read the fund’s current sector percentages and top holdings rather than relying on its name.
Measure the exposure you actually own
Count economic exposure, not account labels. Include taxable accounts, retirement plans, education accounts, employer stock, restricted stock units, employee purchase plans, options, and any fund whose holdings overlap with your individual shares. A technology company can also appear in a communication-services or consumer fund, so use the fund’s actual holdings and sector classification.
Step 1: Build a complete technology-exposure inventory
Make one worksheet for every account. Record the market value, percentage of the total portfolio, account type, tax basis where relevant, and the fund’s latest sector and top-holding information. For an option, use the position’s economic exposure and expiration details rather than treating it as a small cash outlay.
Use a look-through calculation
For each fund, multiply your position value by the fund’s technology percentage. Add that result to the value of direct technology shares and technology exposure embedded in other funds. The following table shows the calculation method; the figures are illustrative, not a recommended portfolio.
| Holding | Position value | Technology share or exposure | Look-through technology value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct technology shares | $20,000 | 100% | $20,000 |
| Capitalization-weighted index fund | $50,000 | 30% | $15,000 |
| Dividend-oriented fund | $20,000 | 10% | $2,000 |
| Government-bond fund | $10,000 | 0% | $0 |
| Total portfolio | $100,000 | $37,000, or 37% |
In this example, the investor may think the direct $20,000 position is the main risk, but the index fund adds another $15,000 of similar exposure. Repeat the exercise for each major company, not only for the technology sector.
Check concentration by company, sector, size, and country
Schwab’s concentration guidance recommends checking four dimensions: sector, individual company, company size, and country. Set a warning level for any one company and for the combined value of closely related companies. Also check whether a U.S.-only portfolio leaves you dependent on one market, currency, and regulatory environment.

Include human-capital concentration
If your salary, bonus, pension, or future job prospects depend on the technology industry, your financial life already has technology exposure. An employee with a large technology-stock position faces a double concentration: the shares may fall at the same time that hiring, compensation, or job security weakens. Treat that dependence as a reason to be more conservative with investable assets, even though it is not shown on a brokerage statement.

Step 2: Set a strategic allocation before a selloff
Choose target percentages for stocks, bonds, and cash before markets become stressful. The SEC’s framework uses three questions: your time horizon, risk tolerance, and ability to take risk. Risk tolerance is your willingness to endure a decline; risk capacity is whether your income, savings, and goal date allow you to endure it. A person may be emotionally comfortable with volatility but still need more bonds because a tuition payment or home purchase is approaching.
Match the mix to the goal date
Money needed soon generally belongs in cash or high-quality short-term instruments rather than assets that could be down when the bill arrives. Long-term retirement money can usually tolerate a larger stock allocation, but “long term” does not make a concentrated technology position automatically suitable. Revisit the allocation when the goal date, income, debt, family obligations, or emergency reserve changes.
| Situation | Allocation question | Typical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Near-term spending or withdrawals | Could a market loss force a sale within the next few years? | Hold a larger cash and high-quality short-duration reserve for those withdrawals. |
| Intermediate goal | Can the portfolio recover before the money is needed? | Use a balanced stock-bond mix and limit concentrated sector exposure. |
| Decades-long accumulation | Can income and contributions cover a prolonged decline? | A higher stock allocation may be reasonable, but diversify companies, sectors, countries, and sizes. |
These are decision frameworks, not prescribed percentages. No authoritative source establishes one universally safe technology allocation or a guaranteed hedge ratio.
Write ranges, not a perfect point estimate
A target range gives you room to make a rule-based change without reacting to every price move. For example, you might specify a total stock range, a bond range, a cash minimum, and a maximum for any one sector or company. The figures should be chosen from your plan, not copied from a market forecast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStep 3: Diversify the risks that drive returns
Add genuinely different equity exposures
Direct new contributions toward sectors and companies that are underrepresented in your inventory. Non-technology sectors can include health care, consumer staples, utilities, industrials, energy, materials, financials, and real estate. They are not guaranteed to rise when technology falls; each has its own economic and valuation risks. The purpose is to avoid having one industry determine the result of the entire portfolio.

International developed and emerging-market equities add companies, currencies, monetary policies, and economic cycles that differ from those in the United States. They can also decline together during a global shock, and currency movements can either help or hurt a U.S.-based investor. Diversification by country is a risk spread, not a promise of better returns.
Review company size as well as sector. A portfolio made entirely of large companies can behave differently from one that also owns established midsize and smaller companies. Smaller-company shares can be more volatile and less liquid, so size diversification must fit your risk capacity.
Use fixed income for a defined defensive job
High-quality U.S. Treasury securities are generally regarded as among the safer fixed-income investments because they are backed by the U.S. government. Investment-grade corporate bonds can add income and issuer diversification but introduce credit-spread and default risk. A bond fund is not a bank deposit: its share price changes with interest rates, duration, credit conditions, trading liquidity, and market prices.
Duration is a practical measure of interest-rate sensitivity. Longer-duration bonds usually move more when rates change; shorter-duration holdings generally fluctuate less but may provide less income and require reinvestment sooner. Match duration to the period for which you need stability rather than reaching for yield without considering the date of the liability.
Schwab Asset Management’s analysis using data through September 30, 2024, compared hypothetical allocations over the 10-year period ending on that date. It found that adding fixed income reduced volatility and the dispersion of returns in those comparisons, while emphasizing that fixed-income exchange-traded funds are not risk-free. Vanguard similarly notes that bonds have historically acted as a stabilizer because fixed income usually has less volatility than equities, while warning that recent periods have challenged the traditional stock-bond relationship.
Keep cash for near-term spending, not as a market forecast
A cash reserve prevents you from selling stocks to pay an imminent bill. Keep the reserve sized to expected withdrawals and your income reliability. Cash can lose purchasing power to inflation and may earn less than longer-term assets, so its role is liquidity and spending stability, not a prediction that stocks will fall.

Step 4: Reduce overlap with the least disruptive change
After setting targets, decide how to move toward them. In a taxable account, first direct dividends and new contributions to underweight sectors, international holdings, bonds, or cash. This can lower concentration without immediately realizing gains. In retirement accounts, exchanges may be simpler, but check plan rules, trading windows, and any restrictions.
- List every holding. Capture account value, sector, top-company exposure, country, company size, stock-bond-cash classification, tax basis, and liquidity.
- Calculate totals. Add look-through technology exposure and the weight of each major company across all accounts.
- Define targets and guardrails. Write stock, bond, and cash ranges, a sector or company maximum, and the date or threshold that will trigger review.
- Redirect new money. Use payroll contributions, dividends, and scheduled deposits to fill underrepresented categories before selling appreciated positions.
- Choose defensive holdings deliberately. For the bond allocation, specify Treasury versus investment-grade exposure, maturity or duration, credit quality, and the amount needed for near-term spending.
- Sell only what the plan requires. Compare expected taxes, bid-ask spreads, fund fees, and transaction costs with the benefit of reducing concentration.
- Document the decision. Save the allocation, rationale, tax estimates, and next review date so a future market drop does not rewrite the plan.
Step 5: Rebalance by calendar or threshold
Rebalancing restores the risk level you selected; it is not a method for forecasting the next market move. Vanguard illustrates a 70% stock and 30% bond portfolio that is rebalanced when either allocation drifts by 5 percentage points or more. In that example, stocks at 75% or bonds at 25% would trigger a review and a move back toward the target.
Calendar method
Review at a fixed interval, such as quarterly or annually, and trade only when the portfolio is outside your written ranges. A calendar is easy to automate and prevents constant monitoring, but it may allow a large drift between reviews.
Threshold method
Check periodically and act when an asset class or concentration exceeds its band. Thresholds keep the risk profile closer to target but require accurate records and discipline. Use the same test in every account, or document why a tax-deferred account is being rebalanced differently from a taxable one.
Use cash flows first
Directing contributions, withdrawals, and dividends toward the underweight category can reduce trading. When a sale is necessary, use tax lots and account locations that meet the plan with the smallest avoidable tax cost. Do not let a tax bill justify retaining a concentration that threatens a near-term goal; estimate both costs instead.
Taxes, fees, and behavior can defeat a sound allocation
Estimate the tax result before selling
Selling appreciated technology shares in a taxable account can create capital gains. Separate short-term and long-term lots, check your applicable tax rates, and account for state taxes where relevant. Harvesting a loss may offset gains, but wash-sale rules and substantially identical replacement securities require careful handling. A qualified tax professional can evaluate details that depend on your jurisdiction and filing situation.

Compare total costs, not just expense ratios
Include fund expense ratios, trading commissions if any, bid-ask spreads, custody charges, tax drag, and the cost of holding cash. A low-cost fund can still be a poor fit if it duplicates your existing technology exposure or has a duration that conflicts with your spending date.
Prevent panic decisions
Writing the rule in advance is a behavioral tool. Decide what evidence would change the plan, how often you will look at the account, and who can approve an exception. Selling after a fall converts an unrealized loss into a realized one and creates the separate challenge of deciding when to reinvest. A diversified allocation can still lose money; its purpose is to make the loss more manageable and the recovery plan more durable.
How to compare funds and other implementation choices
Use the same checklist for a broad index fund, a sector fund, an international fund, a bond fund, or individual securities. A fund’s label is not enough; inspect its current prospectus, holdings, benchmark, and risk measures.

Applying the framework to common situations
You are approaching a major withdrawal
Identify the exact amount and date, place that amount in an appropriate cash or high-quality short-term reserve, and avoid relying on a technology-heavy stock allocation for a known payment. Keep the remainder invested according to its longer-term purpose. Recalculate the reserve after the withdrawal rather than assuming the old allocation still fits.
Your horizon is measured in decades
A long horizon can support meaningful equity exposure, but it does not require a single sector to dominate. Keep contributing through downturns if your plan and cash flow allow, diversify across sectors, countries, and company sizes, and rebalance at the written threshold instead of changing the plan because of headlines.
Your employer stock is a large part of net worth
Map vesting dates, blackout periods, tax withholding, and the income risk associated with your employer. Build a sale schedule that respects those constraints and directs new retirement contributions away from the same company or sector. An individualized tax and financial plan is especially valuable when restricted shares or options are involved.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting funds instead of exposures: owning five funds does not prove diversification if they share the same largest companies.
- Using a sector fund as a hedge: moving from one technology fund to another technology fund changes the label, not the core risk.
- Assuming bonds cannot fall: bond funds can lose value when rates rise, and credit losses can affect corporate holdings.
- Holding too little liquidity: a portfolio can be well diversified and still fail if a near-term bill forces a sale during a drawdown.
- Rebalancing by headlines: forecasts are uncertain; a rule based on targets is more repeatable than reacting to a news cycle.
- Ignoring taxes and trading frictions: the gross improvement in allocation may be smaller than the tax and transaction costs.
- Confusing diversification with a guarantee: different assets can decline together during severe economic or market shocks.
When to seek individualized advice
Consider a qualified investment and tax professional when you have concentrated employer equity, options, a large unrealized gain, a trust or business interest, multiple countries of residence, or withdrawals that must begin soon. Ask the professional to show the proposed look-through exposure, target ranges, expected taxes, liquidity schedule, bond duration and credit quality, and the exact rebalancing trigger. You should be able to explain what the plan is designed to protect and what risks it deliberately accepts.

The practical outcome is a portfolio whose risk is chosen in advance rather than discovered during a technology selloff. Measure the concentration, set an allocation that fits the goal, diversify the underlying drivers, preserve near-term liquidity, and rebalance with a rule you can follow in both rising and falling markets.
