You do not have to liquidate your entire portfolio to repay a margin loan. The usual choices are to deposit outside cash, ask whether your broker automatically offsets available cash against the debit, or sell a selected portion of your holdings and direct the proceeds to the loan. Which route works depends on the debit, accrued interest, account rules, tax lots, and whether a margin call is already active.
First establish the exact amount needed and whether the firm has issued a call. A broker can liquidate securities without waiting for your instructions, can choose which positions to sell, and can change its house maintenance requirements. If a call or deficiency exists, contact the firm immediately rather than assuming a notice gives you a guaranteed grace period.
What a margin balance is—and what must be repaid
A margin debit is money borrowed from your brokerage firm and secured by securities in the account. Interest accrues according to the margin agreement. The amount shown as the debit may not be the total needed to close the loan because interest can continue to accrue until a payment or sale proceeds are credited under the firm’s procedures.
Numbers to identify before choosing a remedy
- Debit balance: the principal borrowed, before any additional interest that has not yet posted.
- Accrued interest: financing cost calculated under your agreement and the broker’s rate schedule.
- Available cash: cash that can be deposited or, if the firm permits it, applied against the debit.
- Maintenance excess or deficiency: the amount by which the account is above or below the broker’s required equity level.
- Call type and amount: a written notice may identify a maintenance, house, or other deficiency with a firm-specific amount and deadline.
Ask customer service for the payoff figure as of a stated date, the amount required to cure any call, and the time at which a deposit or sale proceeds are considered credited for margin purposes. Do not calculate the required payment from a generic maintenance-margin percentage; firms can impose higher house requirements and can change them.

The three practical ways to reduce the debit
| Method | How the debit falls | Portfolio exposure | Tax considerations | Can it address an active call? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deposit outside cash | The cash payment reduces the financed amount after the broker credits it under its procedures. | Holdings remain in place. | No security sale, so no gain or loss from that transaction; other tax rules can still apply to interest and the source of the cash. | Often the most direct remedy, but only the broker can confirm the amount and crediting time needed. |
| Broker cash netting | The firm offsets an eligible cash balance against the margin debit. | Holdings remain in place. | No sale-related gain or loss. | Only if the firm’s policy applies to your account and the resulting credit is sufficient. |
| Sell selected holdings | Sale proceeds are applied to the debit after the firm’s settlement and posting process. | Exposure to the sold position decreases; other investments remain. | A realized gain or loss depends on the lot’s basis, holding period, and your tax situation. | It may help, but do not assume a sale amount satisfies a call without confirmation. |
There is no universal best option. Available cash, the urgency and size of a call, the positions in the account, broker rules, and your tax position determine the sensible sequence.
Step 1: establish the account’s current status
- Open the margin section of your statement or online account and record the debit, accrued interest, available cash, maintenance excess, and any call or deficiency notice.
- Call the brokerage and request the exact amount required to bring the account current as of a specific date. Ask whether the figure includes interest through the day a payment posts.
- Ask which payment methods are accepted, whether a bank transfer must be initiated from a particular link or form, and how long each method takes to receive margin credit.
- Ask whether the call has a deadline, whether the firm may liquidate before that time, and what positions would be subject to special margin requirements.
- Write down the representative’s instructions and obtain updated figures after any transaction. An initiated transfer or order is not proof that the debit has been reduced.
Step 2: use outside cash when available
A deposit into the margin account reduces the amount financed once the firm credits it. The practical question is not only whether you have cash, but when the broker recognizes it for the debit and for a margin call.
Questions to ask about a cash deposit
- Does the firm accept an electronic bank transfer, wire, check, or another method for margin repayment?
- When does the deposit become available for margin purposes, and is that different from the date it appears as settled cash?
- Does interest continue to accrue until the deposit is posted, settled, or processed by a back-office team?
- Will the firm automatically use the deposit to reduce the margin debit, or must you send a written instruction?
- After posting, what new debit and maintenance figures should you expect to see?
Do not send money to a separate cash account assuming the broker will move it automatically. Confirm the destination and the application instruction first.
Step 3: check whether the broker nets cash against the debit
Cash netting is not a standard practice at every firm. The SEC’s investor guidance explains that some broker-dealers offset cash held in a related account against a margin loan, while others do not. Ask whether the policy applies to your account type, which cash balances qualify, and whether the offset happens automatically or only after a request.
Netting can lower the interest-bearing amount without selling an investment, but the effect depends on the broker’s calculation and posting rules. A cash balance that is visible on the screen may not be eligible, may be reserved for another transaction, or may not be credited until a processing date. Request the firm’s written explanation and the resulting debit before relying on the interest savings.

Step 4: sell a deliberate portion of the portfolio if cash is insufficient
You can reduce a margin loan by selling one or more positions instead of liquidating everything. The key is to choose the sale based on the amount that must be repaid and the consequences of giving up that exposure—not simply on which position is easiest to sell.
Decide how much debt reduction is needed
Ask the broker for two figures: the amount that would fully close the debit and the smaller amount that would restore the required maintenance level, if a call is active. Include a cushion for interest and market movement only if the broker tells you how it calculates that cushion. A sale that looks sufficient at the current price can produce less cash if the market moves or the final credited amount differs from the order value.

Reducing an oversized or highly volatile position can lower the account’s vulnerability to another deficiency while leaving diversified holdings intact. Conversely, selling a low-volatility holding may preserve a concentrated position that carries greater risk. Consider your investment objective, the role of each position, liquidity, and whether the broker assigns that security a special house requirement.
Choose tax lots deliberately
Different lots of the same security can have different cost bases and holding periods. Ask how your order ticket selects lots—such as specific identification, first-in-first-out, or the broker’s default—and review the confirmation. Realizing a gain or loss can affect your federal and state tax returns; the result depends on your basis, holding period, other gains and losses, and personal circumstances.
Confirm that the position can be sold and credited
Some securities may be illiquid, restricted, or subject to special margin rules. Ask whether the expected proceeds will be available for repayment at settlement and whether the firm will apply them automatically to the debit. If the broker has already taken control under a margin call, you may no longer control which securities it sells.

Step 5: verify that money actually reduced principal
- After a deposit or sale, check the trade confirmation or cash ledger for the amount and processing date.
- Ask whether the proceeds are applied to principal immediately, at settlement, or at another internal posting point.
- Confirm whether interest continues to accrue until that point and whether any residual interest will create a small remaining debit.
- Request the updated debit, accrued interest, maintenance excess, and call status from the broker.
- Keep the confirmation and the representative’s instructions with your account records.
A sale order, pending bank transfer, or displayed cash balance does not by itself prove that the loan has been paid down.
If a margin call is active, treat it as an emergency
FINRA warns that a firm can sell securities to cover a margin deficiency without contacting you, can decide which securities to sell, and can raise its house maintenance requirements. FINRA’s investor alert states: “If you receive a margin call, act promptly to satisfy the margin call.” Investors are not entitled to an extension, and a broker may sell even after it has communicated a date for meeting the call.
Call the firm as soon as you see the notice and ask for the exact cure amount, accepted payment route, crediting deadline, and whether liquidation has already been authorized. Do not wait for the market to recover or assume that a posted date guarantees that positions will remain untouched. If the firm liquidates, it may choose positions you would have preferred to keep, and the sale can create taxable gains or losses.
What a brokerage transfer can—and cannot—do
Moving securities to another brokerage is not a way to erase a margin debt. The SEC says many firms will not allow securities to be transferred out of a margin account while an outstanding margin loan remains. Ask the current firm whether the debit must be paid, whether a specific transfer arrangement is available, and whether any assets are ineligible to move.
Do not initiate an account transfer until you understand how the loan will be handled. A transfer request can be rejected or delayed, while interest and market risk continue. Converting an account to cash status or removing margin privileges may prevent future borrowing if the firm approves it, but that change does not repay an existing debit; obtain the firm’s procedure before relying on it.

Interest: what changes when the balance falls
Margin interest is governed by the account agreement, including the rate schedule, calculation method, and billing or posting cycle. Reducing principal generally reduces the amount on which interest is calculated, but the timing of that reduction matters. Ask whether the firm calculates interest through settlement, through the day a cash payment posts, or through another cutoff.
The SEC’s investor guidance on margin interest emphasizes that cash-netting practices differ among firms. It also illustrates why two accounts with the same displayed cash and debit can incur different interest if one firm offsets the cash and another does not. Treat that illustration as an explanation of the mechanism, not as a current market rate or a promise about your broker.

Sales can create gains or losses
Selling part of a position is a taxable disposition in many circumstances. The tax result depends on the specific lot’s basis, holding period, sale proceeds, wash-sale considerations where applicable, and your complete tax picture. A sale made to meet a margin call is not automatically tax-free or tax-deferred.
Interest deductibility is limited
IRS Publication 550 (2025) says: “If you are a cash method taxpayer, you can deduct interest on margin accounts to buy taxable securities as investment interest in the year you paid it.” That statement is limited: the use of the loan proceeds, investment-income rules, deduction limits, filing status, and other current-year requirements matter. Interest used for a different purpose may receive different treatment.

A decision framework for common situations
You have enough outside cash and no active call
Request a payoff amount, confirm the accepted deposit method and crediting time, then deposit the cash and verify the new debit. Ask whether any separate cash balance will be netted automatically so you do not leave an avoidable interest-bearing amount outstanding.
You have some cash but not enough to close the loan
Use the cash amount the broker confirms, then calculate the remaining reduction needed. For the balance, compare a partial sale of a high-concentration or tax-efficient lot with retaining that exposure and accepting a larger debit. Have the broker confirm that the combined payment and sale proceeds meet the account requirement.
You receive a call and cannot fund it entirely
Contact the firm immediately, state how much cash you can provide, and ask which portion of the portfolio would need to be sold to cure the deficiency. Do not assume you can choose the final positions or obtain extra time. Ask for written confirmation of the cure amount and the posting deadline.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You want to move the account to another firm
Ask the current firm whether an outstanding debit blocks an in-kind transfer and what payoff or special documentation is required. Treat the transfer as an administrative move only; it is not repayment.
Questions to put to your broker
- What is my current principal debit, accrued interest, and exact payoff amount today?
- Is there an active call or deficiency, and what amount and time will cure it?
- Which deposit methods are accepted, and when does each receive margin credit?
- Does my account automatically net eligible cash against the debit?
- When are sale proceeds applied to principal, and does interest accrue until settlement or another posting time?
- Can any position in my account have a special house-margin requirement?
- If I sell, how are tax lots selected and can I specify lots?
- Can I transfer securities while the debit is outstanding, and what must happen first?
- After payment or sale, when will you provide the updated debit and maintenance figures?
Bottom line for keeping investments in place
Start with the least disruptive route that the broker confirms: an outside-cash payment or an eligible cash offset. If that is insufficient, sell only the amount and positions needed to reduce the debit, while considering concentration, liquidity, tax lots, and the account’s margin rules. Verify the posting and new balance rather than relying on an order or transfer in progress. An active margin call changes the priority: contact the firm immediately because liquidation can occur without your approval and without a guaranteed extension.
