The most reliable way to reduce OLED flicker is to use the control supplied for your exact phone model, then test it at the brightness level where you notice the problem. OLED phones often regulate brightness with pulse-width modulation (PWM), which rapidly alternates the display’s output. Some people notice that modulation as flicker, particularly when the screen is dim. Menu names, supported models, behavior at different brightness levels, and availability by software version or region all vary.
Start by recording your phone’s make, model, operating-system version, and region. Check Accessibility and Display settings for an explicitly named anti-flicker, DC dimming, PWM smoothing, or sensitive eyes option. Enable only the setting documented for your model, compare the result at several brightness levels, and turn it off if its low-brightness trade-offs are worse for you. No manufacturer documentation cited here guarantees that a setting will eliminate flicker or symptoms.
Why an OLED phone can look as if it is flickering
OLED pixels emit their own light, so the phone must regulate that output as you change brightness. A common method is pulse-width modulation (PWM): the display switches on and off rapidly, and the proportion of each cycle that is on determines perceived brightness. The exact frequency, waveform, and transition points are implementation details of the panel and its software.

At some brightness levels, a person may perceive the modulation directly or experience discomfort while another person sees no problem. A phone can also change dimming methods as brightness changes. For example, Xiaomi describes the Xiaomi 14T as using DC dimming at high brightness and high-frequency PWM at low brightness. That means a setting that helps at one slider position may have little effect at another.

There is no universal Android or iPhone menu path for flicker control. Manufacturers expose different controls, limit them to particular models, or omit them entirely. A setting called “anti-flicker,” “DC dimming,” or “PWM smoothing” is meaningful only in the context of the phone’s own documentation.
Identify the exact phone before changing anything
Use the model shown in Settings > About phone (or the equivalent page), not just the product family name on the box. Record the following:
- Full model name and, if shown, model or carrier code.
- Operating-system version and the phone’s display or firmware update status.
- Country or region in which the phone was sold and is currently configured.
- The brightness range at which you notice flicker, such as below 30% or only at the minimum setting.
- Whether the effect is visible to your eyes, visible only through a camera, or both.
Regional firmware can expose different menus. A support page for one model is not evidence that the same menu exists on another model from the same manufacturer.

- Reproduce the effect. In the lighting where you normally notice it, slowly move the brightness slider from high to low and note the range that feels or looks different. Keep adaptive brightness off temporarily if it prevents a consistent comparison.
- Search the display and accessibility menus. Look for an option whose name explicitly refers to flicker, PWM, DC dimming, anti-flicker, or sensitive eyes. Do not assume that a blue-light, color-temperature, Reading, or Night mode changes the panel’s dimming method.
- Enable one documented control at a time. Apply the model-specific instructions below, then leave other display changes unchanged so you can tell which option affected the result.
- Test several brightness levels. Compare the original and changed settings at the level where you noticed flicker, at the minimum brightness, around the middle, and at a higher level. A control may change low-brightness behavior without changing high-brightness behavior.
- Check practical trade-offs. Look for changes in minimum brightness, shadow detail, color appearance, battery behavior, or readability in a dark room. Apple warns that disabling PWM can affect low-brightness display performance under certain conditions.
- Keep or revert based on your experience. Manufacturer wording such as “may help” describes a possible benefit, not a guaranteed personal result. If the screen looks worse or the setting is unavailable, return to the previous configuration.

Supported iPhone models: Display Pulse Smoothing (PWM)
On an iPhone that supports the feature, open Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Display Pulse Smoothing (PWM). Apple documents this as a way to create a smoother dimming experience at low brightness because iPhone brightness uses PWM. The option may not appear on every iPhone, so its absence does not indicate that your phone is faulty.
After changing it, test at the lowest level at which you normally use the phone and then at a slightly higher level. Apple’s warning is specific: “Disabling PWM may affect low brightness display performance under certain conditions.” If fine details, uniformity, or readability become unacceptable, switch the option back.

Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold
On the specified Pixel models, open Settings > Accessibility > Adjust brightness for sensitive eyes. Google says this customization may help with the viewing experience for people sensitive to OLED display emission frequency. The wording does not promise that it removes modulation, and the setting is not presented as a diagnosis or treatment for a health condition.
Compare the setting with the same brightness, text size, refresh-rate choice, and room lighting. If the option is missing, verify the model and software version; do not assume that another Pixel model has the same control.

For the Xiaomi 14, Xiaomi UK documents Settings > Display & brightness > Anti-flicker mode. The page says that enabling the mode reduces flicker through DC dimming. Follow that exact path on the Xiaomi 14 rather than searching for a generic Android setting.
Test both the brightness range where flicker appears and the range where you normally read. DC dimming can produce a different low-light appearance, so retain the mode only if the resulting image remains comfortable and usable.
POCO X7 Pro: do not confuse Reading mode with PWM control
Xiaomi’s POCO X7 Pro support information says the phone uses DC dimming at high brightness and PWM dimming at low brightness, and specifies 1920 Hz PWM for this device. It suggests Settings > Display & brightness > Reading mode as an eye-protection adjustment.

That page does not state that Reading mode turns PWM off. Reading mode can alter the screen’s color appearance, but the available documentation does not establish it as a panel-level PWM fix. Try it for comfort if you like the result, while judging it separately from flicker behavior.

Xiaomi 14T: brightness-dependent dimming
Xiaomi describes the Xiaomi 14T as using DC dimming at high brightness and high-frequency PWM at low brightness. This is a useful example of why “does this phone flicker?” has no single answer without a brightness level. If your software exposes an anti-flicker control, follow the 14T’s own current instructions; otherwise, testing a somewhat higher brightness may change the dimming method, though it is not a guarantee and may be impractical in a dark room.
What color filters, Night mode, and Reading mode can—and cannot—prove
Color-temperature filters, Night mode, and Reading mode change the image’s color balance or tone. They may make a display feel more comfortable because the image looks warmer or less harsh, but the cited manufacturer pages do not establish that these modes disable PWM. The POCO X7 Pro documentation is explicit enough to illustrate the distinction: it suggests Reading mode while separately describing PWM at low brightness.
Use a filter if its color and contrast are preferable, not as evidence that the underlying dimming waveform has changed. An option should be described as a flicker control only when the phone maker specifically documents that relationship.
How to test a change without fooling yourself
Use repeatable conditions
- Keep room lighting, screen content, font size, refresh-rate setting, and viewing distance constant.
- Compare the same white page, dark page, and moving content at identical slider positions.
- Give your eyes a short break between comparisons instead of switching rapidly while staring continuously.
- Record which setting was active and the brightness percentage so you can restore the preferred combination.
Separate visible flicker from discomfort
You may see bands or shimmer, feel strain, or notice nothing visually while still preferring one setting. These observations are personal responses, not measurements of a phone’s PWM frequency. The manufacturer statements cited here provide device guidance, not clinical evidence, and they do not establish that a headache or eye discomfort has one specific cause.

Check more than one brightness point
Because a phone can use DC dimming at high brightness and PWM at low brightness, test the low, middle, and high portions of the slider. A change that helps at 10% may do nothing at 50%. If you use automatic brightness, repeat the test after re-enabling it because the phone may move through different ranges during normal use.

A camera can record stripes or ripples even when the panel looks normal to your eyes. Huawei explains that a PWM-driven OLED alternates between bright and dark periods, while a camera’s rolling shutter or exposure timing captures only part of that cycle. The result can be bands in a viewfinder or photograph.
For a cleaner photograph of a display, Huawei suggests setting the screen to maximum brightness or taking a screenshot instead. These stripes are a camera-capture artifact; they do not by themselves prove a defective panel and do not diagnose another person’s symptoms. See Huawei’s explanation of screen stripes in photos.
If your phone has no documented flicker option
First, install the latest official system update available for your exact model and region, then check the display and accessibility menus again. Manufacturers sometimes rename or relocate controls, but a missing option may simply mean that the model does not provide one.
Next, test whether a modestly higher brightness avoids the range that bothers you. This is a practical experiment, not proof that PWM has been eliminated. You can also reduce reflections, use consistent room lighting, and choose a color mode you find comfortable; those changes affect viewing conditions rather than establishing a different dimming method.

A generic dimmer application cannot be assumed to change panel-level PWM. An app normally changes the software brightness value or overlays the image, while the panel’s own dimming circuit remains a device-specific implementation. The documented sources here do not establish any generic app as a PWM remedy.
When replacing the phone becomes a reasonable question
Consider a different phone only after you have identified the exact model, tested its documented controls, and decided that the remaining behavior is unacceptable. A meaningful comparison requires the candidate model’s measured flicker or dimming behavior across brightness levels, whether it offers a model-specific control, how that control affects color and low-light performance, regional availability, and current software support.
The information here does not identify a universally flicker-free replacement. “OLED” alone is not enough to predict comfort: two phones can use different panels, frequencies, dimming transitions, and software controls. Treat claims such as “flicker-free” as model- and brightness-specific, and look for measurements that describe test conditions rather than relying on the display technology name.

Safety and support boundaries
Manufacturer settings are customization tools, not medical advice. If screen use repeatedly causes significant pain, persistent visual changes, or other concerning symptoms, stop the activity and seek appropriate professional advice rather than assuming PWM is the only explanation. If the problem is a new hardware artifact—such as persistent lines visible to your eyes at all brightness levels—contact the phone maker or seller for model-specific troubleshooting.
For ordinary flicker concerns, the settings-first sequence is the safest practical approach: identify the model, use only its documented control, test at the relevant brightness levels, and keep the setting only when the real-world trade-off works for you.
